that support, it is impossible for <strong>the</strong>m to reach <strong>the</strong> upper levels, which leaves <strong>the</strong> next generation<br />

of women professionals similarly adrift. They are caught <strong>in</strong> a vicious cycle.<br />

In our focus groups, <strong>the</strong> yearn<strong>in</strong>g for female role models was palpable. Young female eng<strong>in</strong>eers <strong>in</strong><br />

particular wanted to look up <strong>and</strong> see senior women <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fields cop<strong>in</strong>g with work-family issues<br />

<strong>and</strong> deal<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> scrut<strong>in</strong>y that comes with be<strong>in</strong>g a woman eng<strong>in</strong>eer. As one young woman puts<br />

it, “See<strong>in</strong>g is believ<strong>in</strong>g—right now <strong>the</strong>re is no one out <strong>the</strong>re.”<br />

Quite aside from <strong>the</strong> visuals (just see<strong>in</strong>g a woman <strong>in</strong> a top job), young female eng<strong>in</strong>eers expressed<br />

a strong desire for a mentor—a senior woman who would offer advice <strong>and</strong> guidance. But meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />
