Decorated Gourd
At the January meeting of the ALL
Garden Club, we participated in a lively
and fascinating slide show and presentation
led by Larry Ragle, president of the
California Bonsai Society. In addition to
a demonstration of the creation and care
of Bonsai, Mr. Ragle offered several suggestions
as to the display of Bonsai. He is
also involved in Suiseki, the art of arranging
stones to suggest landscapes such
as mountains and islands. Mr. Ragle’s
presentation was preceded by a short business
meeting and lunch at the Yacht Club
followed.
The February excursion will be our
exciting Third Annual Diva Luncheon.
In the regal manner of all true Divas, will
eschew any and all business and meeting
trivia and, instead, don our tiaras (everyone
will be provided one) and assemble in
our private dining room at Mc Kenna’s
Creek in Long Beach. There, we will
enjoy the food, company, and ambiance
in a regal manner!
The March meeting will feature Eric
Olsen. His topic will be “What’s New
in Gardening”, speaking especially to
Sea-Crop, an organic fertilizers that feeds
more plants with less product. He plans to
present an easy-to-follow “show and tell”
that will include a bonus use: what can it
do for pets?
At the ALL Garden Club, we have a
short, informational meeting, followed by
a presentation by a local expert in some
form of gardening. Every other month,
we plan an excursion to a near-by garden,
shop, park, or museum that features some
aspect of gardening. Our next excursion
will be in April, the Getty Villa in Malibu.
Of course, in the world of gardening,
there’s no end to the many, many
topics and special interests available. In
upcoming months, we’ll spend some time
discovering new ways to display our love
for all things growing with lectures and
visits to local gardens and the myriad
of beautifully landscaped sites which
Southern California is so famous for.
Our membership chair and VP,
Linda Axel, is continuing a lovely, new
practice initiated by Sally Cohen last
year. Linda will present a rose (our club
flower) to each new member as well as
to the member who introduces someone
to ALL. At the November meeting, we
welcomed Linda Sackin to the group. She
was sponsored by Marsha Hendler.
As usual, we extend a warm invitation
to any who would like to join us in
these kinds of activities, or might just like
to visit once to check us out. Linda Axel is
membership chair; she can be reached at
714-840-1940. Come on over!
Sea Isle Garden Club
Sea Isle Garden Club members at the Holiday Luncheon at SeaCliff Country Club on December 12th: Anne Blayden, Lucille Mascoli, Dorothy Ralphs, Loel
Mount, Diane Casey, and Marta O’Rourke.
Wow! The Holidays were fi lled with
fun times for Sea Isle Garden Club members.
We celebrated the successes of our
Edinger Parkway, a great accomplishment
after the founding of our club ten years
ago. On Wednesday, December 12th,
members met at the SeaCliff Country
Club for a brief meeting where President
Mary Ann Brinket thanked Hospitality
Chair Lucille Mascoli and her friend,
Diane Casey, for organizing the use of
the beautifully decorated Club and the
wonderful Christmas luncheon. We all
complimented Carolyn Lloyd for her
adorable snowman favors and thanked
Mary Ann for the angel bookmark she
gave to each guest. Members enjoyed our
Traditional SIGC Holiday Program with
an exciting mystery gift exchange. Both
glittery and glamorous treasures were
unwrapped, including a Santa Hat with a
bright red scarf which was “stolen” a few
times! We also had a yummy home-made
cookie exchange.
were fascinated by guest speaker Nancy
Hunyadi, who has created a Culinary
Academy, was a Chef instructor, a caterer,
and a National Certified Teacher of
Culinary Arts. Nancy showed us ways
to cook with herbs, beautify our table
settings, and shared entertaining tips.
Carolyn Platt, our program chair, was
fore thoughtful in December by asking
us about topics we were most interested,
and Nancy came through splendidly with
a program just for us.
After speaking with Carolyn, Nancy
planned something that she had never
done for a club presentation. She would
usually talk, demonstrate something, and
answer questions but since we are a smaller
club, she felt she would like to cater our
lunch while demonstrating and incorporating
tips on entertaining, garnishing
purchased foods and using special herbs.
So she prepared an appetizer, a salad, and
a dessert for us to enjoy. As promised it
was fun and delicious, as well as informative.
Each of us went home enthused to
begin the 2013 entertainment year.
Please be sure to mark your calendars
for our upcoming Wednesday February
13th meeting at the SeaGate Clubhouse.
Launa Gould, Orange County District
Director of the California Garden Clubs,
Inc. will speak about how important each
Garden Club is to the District, State and
National Garden Clubs. She will also
instruct us on how to make a succulent
wreath arrangement, now that so many
of us are incorporating cactus in our
gardens.
Please contact VP of Membership,
Cindy Allen, at 310-245-8702 for information
on becoming a member of the Sea
Isle Garden Club.

FINS
by Barbara Devlin
December 6th marked our annual
gift exchange among about twenty five
members at Bill and Rita Collin’s house.
Bill played the part of “Jeeves” and carried
appetizers, desserts, presents, coats etc.
for all the ladies. Placed at the door were
boxes to fi ll with unwrapped gifts for the
children at Interval House. There was no
problem in fi lling the boxes by the end of
the evening. Appetizers and desserts were
brought by members, as well as unlabeled,
wrapped gifts to exchange with two steals
allowed. Pat Johnson stole a musical hat
from Maggie Flavia, then Maggie picked
a new wrapped gift that had the same hat
in it! Another popular gift that exchanged
hands were the Santa Morrocas, stolen
twice. One of the most unusual gifts
brought was a glass ornament with a live
succulent within, personally made by
Barbara Simone. We are all looking forward
to more times together in the new
year.
Daytime Gourmet’s Christmas
Luncheon was held at the home of
Barbara Devlin with Mary Berge as
Hostess of the day. Mary Berge prepared a
wonderful menu for members to cook and
enjoy starting with Champagne Peach
Bellini which was thoroughly enjoyed
even by those members who usually don’t
like Champagne. Appetizers were Cheese
Fondue prepared by Loretta Maiorana
and Gloria Beckstrom and “Stuffed Pigs
in Blankets” rolled and prepared by
Marian Galanis . While Marian was preparing
the appetizers Mary Johnson was
with her at the table making the salad of
the day “Bibb Lettuce with Persimmons
and candied pecans.” The salad was a bit
hit with members as no one had ever had
persimmons in a salad and they were delicious.
The main entrée was Rack of Lamb
prepared by June Ascolesi and Betty
McCarthy.
Pearl Holmes made the Gratin
Potatoes and the Peas and Carrots.
Dessert was a beautiful Yule Log with
Ice Cream. (The Yule Log was made by
Mary Berge at her home in Pescadero
and she transported the entire grocery
list when she came down to present her
menu to the other members of Daytime
Gourmet!) After lunch members enjoyed
the Christmas Exchange in Barbara’s
living room. Members bring food gifts to
this exchange (many of them handmade,
like cookies and Jams.)
Wanderlust
by Leigh Ross
From left: Anja Garwick, Frank Buccella and Virginia Buccella.
Our Christmas Dinner Meeting
was held at the lovely, spacious home of
Virginia and Frank Buccella which was
very well attended by our club. President
George Graham thanked everyone
for bringing the great food and our
Hospitality Hosts, Barbara Hollaway and
Delores Movius for the great job they did.
Phil Lupton was a guest of Leigh
Ross and his name was put forward to
becoming a member of the Club.
Our first trip of the season is to
Mammoth Mt. 1/6/13 to 1/11/13 which
is expertly planned by Anja Garwick and
her able assistant, Dan (Husband) She
spends much time every year putting this
trip together for our club. Thanks to her.
The second trip is to Beaver Creek
Colorado, 2/3/13 to 2/10/13. George
Graham trip chair has done a marvelous
job of getting us into great accommodations
at the Osprey Hotel. George
reported he has 40+ skiers signed up for
this beautiful trip.
Our third trip has been planned by
June and Paul Lange to Banff/Lake louise,
3/2/13 to 3/9/13. More than twenty have
signed up for this exciting trip to Canada,
The Langes are great contributors of time
and energy to our Ski Club.

Patch, activity book and certifi cate for the Coastal Wetlander program.
As the Amigos de Bolsa Chica enters
its 37th year of existence, the organization
looks forward to continuing its long tradition
of making visits to the Bolsa Chica
Wetland informative and rewarding experiences
for young and old. Following that
line, the organization launched a number
of new projects in 2012. It designed and
had built two new bulletin boards to greet
visitors arriving at the north and south
parking lots. The structures feature a large,
colorful trail map that details many of the
points of interest of the wetland. The map
takes the place of the long outdated and
faded maps on the original kiosks that are
destined for removal in the near future.
To make visits more meaningful to
youngsters, the Amigos have developed
a new educational program with the
theme, “It’s All Connected”. Based on
the well-known ecological principle that
every ecosystem is connected to every
other ecosystem, the program is devised
to demonstrate to young visitors that
the wetland is not an isolated place but
is interconnected with what happens in
every other adjacent place, like the ocean.
Nutrients that are released when wetland
plants and animals die and disintegrate,
besides feeding wetland plants and animals,
are washed out to sea to nourish
other life. In exchange, many fi sh species
that are found in the ocean turn to
wetlands for a variety of necessities such
as spawning grounds, nurseries for their
young, feeding and escaping predators. In
our new program, young visitors will be
conducting hands-on studies of the wetland,
including surveys of water quality
and the wetland’s plankton communities.
Another project that is aimed primarily
at young visitors to Bolsa Chica,
although adults can participate as well,
is the Bolsa Chica Coastal Wetlander
program. The Amigos have published
a richly illustrated activity book that is
crammed full of puzzles, quizzes, stories
and interesting facts about Bolsa Chica.
Anyone who turns in a book with completed
questions will be designated an
official Bolsa Chica Coastal Wetlander
and presented with a certificate and colorful
jacket patch.
Fund raising is a full time activity
with all non-profits and the Amigos is
no exception. Besides the highly successful
luncheon at Seacliff Country Club
earlier in the year, the organization held
special nights at a number of restaurants
throughout Huntington Beach. But the
idea that attracted the most attention was
succulent-decorated pumpkins. Similar
popular holiday pieces were seen at Rogers
Gardens and other upscale stores. A team
of dedicated Amigos volunteers produced
over 160 decorated pumpkins between
Halloween and Christmas, a number that
quickly sold out. With a little TLC, the
pumpkins should last six months or more.
The Bolsa Chica Wetland is a special
place along the Southern California coast.
Its value is incalculable in so many ways.
Let’s protect and preserve it for generations
to come by treating it like one of our
most treasured personal possessions.

Assistant League ® Huntington Beach
by Susan Bjork
From left: Linda Cassidy, Jean Worden, Santa, Maryann Boryszewski, and Lynn Wilhelm.
During the fall, our Operation School
Bell “Target Night” team hosts hundreds
of children at the local Huntington
Beach (Adams & Brookhurst.) and
Westminster Mall Target stores. The
children, who are referred by 57 schools
across the Huntington Beach, Ocean
View, Fountain Valley and Westminster
districts, are given the opportunity to shop
for age appropriate school clothes. During
the months of September, October, and
November, a total of 1,267 elementary,
middle school and homeless high school
children shopped for new clothes and
were given Payless shoe cards. Two more
sessions will be held at the end of January
to reach the goal of clothing 1,600
students this school year. This program
results in hundreds of children with a
greater sense of self-esteem. And, because
they feel better about going to school,
they have a better learning experience.
Several Assistance League members
from the Harbour attended the annual
Holiday Party on December 2nd at
Meadowlark Golf Club. Everyone had
a great time with dinner, dancing, and
pictures with Santa among the festivities.
On December 20th, our Assisteens
made many children of single parents very
happy. They helped over 50 children pick
out and wrap presents for their parents.
Over 120 presents were donated for the
party by Assistance League Huntington
Beach chapter members, DreamCatchers
The Flying Dutchman Chapter of
the Segerstrom Center for the Arts held
the November meeting at the Capone’s
Cuchina restaurant in Huntington
Beach. The group was asked to dress in
the attire common in the Capone era.
A judging for the most clever went to
Leigh Ross who came in pistol-packing
gangster style complete with holsters and
cigar (unlit). Dorothy Ralphs claimed the
women’s division with her complete shimmering
flapper outfit. Lots of fun was had
by all and they were entertained with a
charteuse who sang songs of the ‘40’s and
‘50’s. A moment of silence was given to
honor the passing of Jean Evans, one of
the founders of the group.
The membership is full after the
addition of 5 couples. Bobbitt Williams,
chairman, introduced Willie and Judy
Grieg, Adeline and Robert Mah, Eunice
and Gil Fujimoto, Bett and Jim Walton.
John Mitchell and Gail LaCorazza were
unable to attend.
The next meeting was a brunch at
the home of Bobbitt and Bill Williams in
their Pelican Point home January 13. It
was fun to discuss all the events that have
transpired over the holidays and fi nally to
OC Barons’ Ball 2012
Dorothy and Boris Ralphs (left and right) with Weikko and Jacki Wirta (middle back and front).
The OC Barons’ League (formerly
known as the Cattle Baron’s League)
presented the OC Barons’ Ball “Rock ‘n
Roll for the Cure” on Saturday, October
27, at the Santa Ana Country Club. The
$100,000 proceeds will fund the American
Cancer Society’s lifesaving research,
programs, advocacy and services. To date,
the volunteer members of the OC Barons’
League have raised nearly $5 million in
the fight against cancer.
The theme was “Rock ‘n Roll for
the Cure.” Guests dressed in fi fties garb
and danced to Danny Memphis & the
Extraordinaires. They dined on fifties
comfort food, pork chops, macaroni and
cheese and chocolate cake. The event
was co-chaired by Jeanie Gibson and
Karyn Sanderson. Silent and live auction
which included a one week stay in Kauai,
a Montana escape for four nights and
five days, a chocolate tasting and truffle
making event for eight people, special
dinner for 8 with Cathy Thomas of the
OC Register and trips to Palm Desert.
“My father passed away from cancer
at the age of 35, when I was only 7,” said
Jeanie Gibson co-chair of the OC Baron’s
Ball. Cancer not only took away his life,
but also robbed me of my life with him.
International Order of the Blue Gavel
by LaVon Plumlee, District Director
That is why I have been involved with
the OC Baron’s for 14 years and I am
committed to helping to find a cure for
cancer.”
This year, it is estimated that 11,630
people in Orange County will hear the
words: “You have cancer,” nearly 144,035
statewide. Because of breakthroughs in
research and cancer education, more
than 63% of them will live high quality
lives for more than five years past their
diagnosis. But we want to exceed survival
past diagnosis to further support research,
patient services, advocacy and educational
programs for OC families. Last year,
the American Cancer Society, which
funded the research that discovered the
mammogram, Pap smear and Tamoxifin,
helped more than 3,281 local patients with
free transportation for treatments, wigs,
emotional support, resource referrals,
vital information, and other necessities.
Nationally, the Society has invested more
than $3.4 billion in cancer research,
including funding 44 Nobel Laureates
and investing $63.5 million last year in
California-based research programs.
California State Lands Commission’s (CSLC) “New Tax”
by Frank Singer
December was an interesting
month, especially for our friends in
Newport Beach. Their city council saw
the affect SB 152 had on Huntington
Harbour, so they took this as a blueprint
to raise additional revenue. Up till
now Newport Beach was charging each
dock owner $100 per year. Empowered
by SB 152 the council voted to charge
by dock footprint which will increase
annual fees from a few hundred to a few
thousand dollars. There was an uproar
and a “Stop the Dock Tax” group was
formed (sound familiar?). As a starter
many boycotted the Christmas parade.
The council recognized SB 152 didn’t
apply to them but still used it as their
basis. Another contrast with us is all
money collected by Newport Beach gets
spent on harbor improvements unlike
here in Huntington Harbour where our
money goes to the State general fund.
Newport Beach’s attorney Kristine
Thagard is in corroboration with our
attorney Ron Zumbrun.
After our September court appearance
we amended our complaint to
enhance our position against the Lands
Commission as suggested by the judge.
Naturally the Lands Commission
Demurred again requiring another
court date on January 16 by the same
judge who heard our original complaint.
Those of you who would like to
attend the hearing it will be at the Santa
Ana court house, 700 Civic Center
Drive West, Santa Ana, Dept. C-15
before Judge Francisco Firmat at 3:00
pm. I invite all who can to attend. It
should be very informative. Feel free to
contact me for additional information.
And now for a “Commercial”. We
desperately need donations for our legal
fund. Since not only the few hundred
property owners on the main and channels
are being affected by SB 152, all
4000 HH residents will be affected by
lowering property values, so everyone
in the Harbour should donate to our
fund.
Fighting the State costs lots of
money, probably as much as $200,000
over the next couple of years. I’ve
asked everyone to make an ANNUAL
contribution of a few hundred dollars.
So far about 100 of you have donated
around $55,000 and we have spent over
$65,000. It’s a new year so I am pleading
for all of you to make your 2013
contribution. I am particularly asking
the 4,000 property owners in HH to
donate something, even a hundred dollars
or so. Imagine if all 4,000 Harbour
residents made one small $50 donation
we would have all the money we need.
EVERYONE IN HUNTINGTON
HARBOUR IS AFFECTED!
Talk to your neighbors, we need
your support (Read $$$). Please contribute
to our legal fund in one of two
ways. Use our website: www.hbpropertyowners.com
or by check:
Make check payable to: “Zumbrun
Law Firm Client Trust Account” and
mail to: Ron Zumbrun, 47 Robert
Court East, Arcata, CA 95521. In the
memo section add: “Huntington Beach
Property Owners”. All contributions
are confidential. If we win, we get back
legal fees and any of the new fees you
paid the State.
The Bolsa Chica Land Trust
by Kim Kolpin, Executive Director, the Bolsa Chica Land Trust
Bolsa Chica Land Trust docents, picture taken by Mr. Ron Krasnitz.
Ten years ago, the Bolsa Chica Land
Trust organized a program to teach 3rd
grade students about the ecology and history
of Bolsa Chica. In the California 3rd
grade science curriculum children learn
about the different biomes of our planet,
with wetland ecology being one that
here at Bolsa Chica we can experience in
person.
Each year 2,000 students come
through the Miracles of the Marsh program.
As a parent, my two older children
remember their Miracles experience, and
my youngest will participate with his
classmates this January. It is no secret that
our schools need help, and that field trips
are amongst the first things to be cut from
the strained budget. Reading about how
water flows through a wetland, seeing a
picture of a bird, is a one dimensional
classroom experience. Being able to break
away from the books and walk amongst
that which they are learning about, adds
a very special element to a student’s
understanding. Standing on our walk
bridge looking at a flock of white pelicans
and being able to listen to the terns while
watching them dive for fish is a much
deeper experience.
Our educational mission is very
important. The more people understand
why Bolsa Chica and wetlands like it are
crucial, the more likely they will be to help
save these areas. So many children today
do not get out into nature; so many adults
do not either. To assist the schools with
their curriculum, the Land Trust does
not charge for our Miracles program, and
helps Title 1 schools with the costs for the
school buses. Our members and grantors
value both the environment and education
and we aim to give the best program
VIMS (Volunteers in Multiple Sclerosis)
by Mim Strickler
we can to the most students possible.
Boeing and Southern California Edison
are two of our partners in bringing this
program to over 15,000 students over the
past decade, and we are grateful for their
continued support.
The Bolsa Chica Land Trust’s volunteer
docents are an amazing group of
organized and well trained individuals.
They visit the classrooms to give presentations
and workbooks to the classes. They
lead students on a two hour tour of the
Reserve, covering wetland ecology, water
conservation, and the its history.
We always need more docents so that
we never have to turn away a school. If
you are interested, please call me at Bolsa
Chica Land Trust, (714) 846-1001 or
email me at BCLandTrust@verizon.net.
Our focus in 2013 is to improve this
wonderful program by better equipping
our docents so that they can capture the
minds and imaginations of 2000 eager
8 year olds. If you would like to make a
donation towards better equipment for
the Miracles program, you can do so at
our website www.BolsaChicaLandTrust.
org or you can send a check to us at 5200
Warner Avenue, Suite 108, Huntington
Beach, CA 92649. All donations to our
non-profit are tax deductible and greatly
appreciated. Together, we can better
educate the next generation to the significance
of our costal natural resources.
VIMS has had an unusually successful
year just past. Over $20,000 was
raised for the Bob Webster Scholarship
Fund which goes to those students in
our community with MS who need help
in funding their schooling. Beyond the
physical and emotional impact, the cost
of living with MS is estimated at $69,000
per year, per person. Our group is
dedicated to helping curb these costs and
makes dreams possible.
Special thanks go to major donors
Don and Ellen Goodwin, Rob and Julie
Webster and Carol Webster.
Plans are now underway for several
social and fund raising events to be
held this year. If you are willing to host
an event in your home please contact
Charmaine Rood at 714-840-5006. She
would also appreciate having any baskets
you may have received and would like to
return to VIMS.
group or its activities, please phone Carol
Cathy Thomas Cooks – Fancy Salt on Sweets, Oh My
by Cathy Thomas, O.C. Register Food Columnist and Author
Fleur de Sel Caramels
Remember when salt meant plain old
salt, poured from a blue cylindrical clad
with a young girl set against a bright blue
label? Holding an umbrella, that poster
gal promised that when it rained, the salt
would pour. Bless her heart.
Now in the marketplace, there are
so many specialty sea salts, it’s hard to
keep up: there are myriad hues of coarsegrained
salt, sourced around the globe.
Most often these “finishing” salts are
sprinkled on dishes at the last minute,
rather than added during a long cooking
process. Scattered on the surface, the texture
and flavor of these fancy salts dance
on tongue; often they give molars a noisy
treat with a welcoming crunch.
The first time I tasted one of Michael
Recchiuti’s caramels at the Ferry Building
in San Francisco, my perception of what
constitutes great candy hit a new level.
The caramel itself sang of rich cream,
good butter and Tahitian vanilla. Good,
yes, but the velvety chocolate coating was
adorned with fine crystals of fleur de sel
(“flower of salt’’).
The salt gave the treat irresistible
allure. It’s an expensive sea salt that is
hand-harvested from salt ponds on sunny
days in northwestern and southwestern
France. It offered a just- right saltiness,
with a briny, slight mineral-like quality.
And its subtle crunchy texture added
interest as well. Here’s my version:
Fleur de Sel Caramels
Yield: About 40 caramels
About 1 teaspoon canola oil
1 cup heavy whipping cream
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut
into pieces; see cook’s notes
1 teaspoon fleur de sel
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/4 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup water
14
Optional: Chocolate-nut coating:
8 ounces coating chocolate,
such as Dolci Frutta (sold next
to berries in supermarkets)
1 to 2 teaspoon finely chopped
pistachios or walnuts
Pinch finely ground fleur de sel
Cook’s notes: It’s best to use a
European-style butter that contains less
moisture and higher butterfat. Land
O’Lakes makes one that is sold in most
supermarkets. Fleur de sel is a special sea
salt sold at culinary specialty shops such
as Sur La Table and Williams-Sonoma, as
well as supermarkets that stock specialty
items. If desired, substitute kosher salt.
For wax paper to wrap candies, I use
waxed bakery tissues from Smart & Final.
They are in a pull-out box like facial tissues
and are 10 3/4 by 6 inches. I cut them
in half and place the waxed side next to
candy.
1. Line bottom and sides of 8-inch
square baking dish with parchment paper,
then lightly brush parchment with oil. Set
aside. In small saucepan, combine cream,
butter and fleur de sel. Bring to boil on
medium-high heat. Remove from heat
and set aside.
2. In heavy, 3- to 4-quart saucepan,
combine sugar, corn syrup and water.
Bring to boil on medium-high heat, stirring
until sugar dissolves. Boil, without
stirring but occasionally gently swirling
pan, until mixture is light golden caramel.
4. Carefully stir in cream mixture
(mixture will bubble up) and simmer,
stirring frequently, until caramel registers
248 degrees on candy thermometer, about
10 to 15 minutes. Pour into baking pan
and cool 2 hours. Cut into 1-inch pieces
with sharp knife. Wrap in 4-inch squares
of wax paper, twisting 2 ends to enclose
(see cook’s notes). Or, if desired, coat one
end in melted chocolate and place on wax
paper for chocolate to harden. Sprinkle
with a tiny bit of salt and/or finely
chopped nuts, if desired.
Huntington Harbour Philharmonic Committee
by Eva Kilgore
Chairmen Lolly McHardy and Donna Gray join Mayor Connie Broadman and assemblyman Allan
Mansoor in a ribbon cutting ceremony honoring HHPC’s 50th anniversary
We gave out funds to grateful
principals at Chili Night, received a
proclamation from the County of Orange
for 50 stellar years of the Boat Parade,
and everyone agrees, we’re up for 50 more
years of bringing music to the children of
Orange County!
How exciting! All of Huntington
Harbour came together to celebrate
the 50 year anniversary of the HHPC.
Thousands of volunteer hours, thousands
of lights, throngs of boat parade watchers,
and as many Cruise of Lights passengers
made this celebration one to remember.
We presented reinvestment monies
to local principals at a lovely chili dinner
at the Huntington Harbour Yacht Club,
answered phones, ushered passengers onto
and off boats, loaded and unloaded buses,
took care of traffic at the Huntington
whenever we could. The HHPC is looking
forward to another 50 years of bringing
music to our children. For information:
Please know that each and every one of
our Harbour residents is important in
the continuation of the HHPC’s effort to
raise funds for children’s music programs.
Cardiac robotic surgery. Our specialty.
When it comes to the advantages of robotic heart surgery over
traditional heart surgery, there’s more than meets the eye.
Performed through a few tiny openings instead of the foot-long
incision to open the chest, this revolutionary procedure means
fewer complications, less discomfort, and faster recoveries.* Very
few hospitals have the depth of clinical experience in this advanced
technology. The MemorialCare Heart & Vascular Institute at Long
Beach Memorial and Orange Coast Memorial has one of the nation’s
top cardiac robotic surgeons, Dr. Daniel Bethencourt, leading our
team. If you are considering cardiac surgery, consider the experts.
HHPC: Sandpipers
by Cindy Allen
Sandpiper President Debbie Edwards, our wonderful Sandpiper members and
guests at Herb and Mary Lundin’s home on December 14th.
Our gracious hosts Herb and Mary Lundin at the December 14th annual
Holiday and After Work Party.
December Events
Sandpipers were very busy in the
month of December helping to make the
50th Annual Cruise of Lights a success.
On Friday, December 14th, the annual
Holiday and After Work Party was held
at Mary and Herb Lundin’s beautiful
waterfront home. Despite some drizzle,
the party was very festive.
Our HHPC Sandpipers Cruise
of Lights Work Nights were Saturday,
December 15th and Thursday, December
20th. Sandpipers helped people board
buses and boats for an enjoyable time
viewing the holiday lights.
Being one of the hardest working
groups, we also had a dozen members
volunteer to work an extra night for
the Cruise of Lights Chili Dinner at
the Huntington Harbour Yacht Club
December 17th. Checks were presented
to Orange County educators for music
education programs. It was a rewarding
event as it lets us see firsthand how our
donations are helping the schools.
January 2013 Meeting
The January 17th meeting was at
the Seal Beach home of Nicole Stewart.
HHPC: Admiralty
by Lora Anderson
Julie Metz (second from right) showing members how to properly hold a violin and play.
Admiralty welcomes new member Barbara Alcott.
Happy New Year to everyone! We are
all looking forward to a fabulous 2013.
To recap the last couple of months
of activity I need to start by saying on
behalf of our wonderful president, Susie
Sampson, many thanks to all the Marina
Windjammers for their hard work on
the boat parade and Cruise of Lights®.
Hats off to our own Margie Bogart
for chairing the HHPC Boat Parade
Committee and to Joanne Fernbach, her
assistant. Kathy Bunch was in charge of
home and boat décor for the committee.
Marsha Waldman and Barbara Sentell
coordinated our Marina Windjammers
volunteers for the Cruise of Lights®. We
loved all the support of our family members
and friends who helped volunteer
with us.
A fun time was had by all at our
holiday party hosted by Margie Bogart
who was so gracious to open up her home
so everyone could get a good view of the
boat parade. Thanks to the hospitality
committee including Kathie Saveliev,
Margie Finlay, and Kathy Bunch for their
enthusiasm in putting together such a
wonderful event! The food was spectacular
and everyone enjoyed a fun evening.
As always, Lani Martin did a great
job arranging our musical enrichment
by violinist Julie Metz at our November
meeting. Julie showed us all how to properly
hold a violin and play. We all had the
opportunity to practice playing a violin
since Julie brought several with her. Kathy
Bunch hosted the November meeting at
her home which included a delicious
variety of salads and casseroles for lunch.
Our January meeting hosted by
Karen Ridout included a special presentation
by Dean Corey, President and Artistic
Director of the Philharmonic Society.
Dean shared his presentation, “Prelude to
Beethoven, the Late Great” with us. Dean
having a passion for Beethoven and his
music is in the process of writing a book
of essays on the subject. Karen Ridout
told me this is the third year that Dean
has dedicated this program toward the
education of the philharmonic committee
members.
Many of us attended the special pasta
dinner fundraiser at the House of Brews
on January 23rd. Thank you to House of
Brews for supporting HHPC and donating
a percentage of sales that evening to
HHPC!
We are looking forward to our music
mobile presentation dates at local schools
in February. Thanks to Carlone Hermon
for coordinating these dates. We will also
be active in ushering for the 2nd and 5th
grade concerts coming up this month.
A warm welcome to our newest
member, Lisa Weller.
Admiralty had an eventful November
and December. We are delighted to welcome
Barbara Alcott to our association.
Barbara is a music teacher and is pleased
to be with a group that sponsors a variety
of musical education programs that serve
over 200,000 children every year.
The Zamboni’s opened their home
for our November meeting which
included a fantastic catered dinner.
Our group served many hours soliciting
restaurants so that we might advise our
Cruise of Lights patrons where to eat
before the parade.
We also donated our time selling
Cruise of Lights tickets and we met many
charming people while volunteering to
work the Cruise of Lights on Wednesday,
December 19th. The poster was viewed
by our Cruise of Lights patrons and was
a good reminder of where their money
is being used for the benefit of the many
children throughout out Orange County.
Our next meeting will be held on
January 17th, 10:30 am, at the home
of Elaine Montgomery. Please join us!
HHPC: Islanders
by Eva Kilgore
The Nichols family won a “Judge’s Award of Excellence.”
The dynamic, incredible and charismatic
president of Islanders, Cristi
Ulrich, was all smiles this season, as
Islanders stepped up to the plate big time.
Some of our past Grand Marshals, Craig
Ferguson, Cor Claus, Jenny Huntsinger,
Jeff Silver, John Ochs, and Brian Griley
celebrated respective themes and the rest,
as they say, is history.
What a parade! Islanders won prizes
for home and boat decorations. Congrats
to the Willingham family, Faubert family,
Nichols family, and Kubeck for all of
their hard work. And to all the additional
Islanders for decorating their homes.
Kim Willingham was everywhere
making sure the boat parade ran smoothly,
and the trophy brunch was a success.
Mary Busche and Susan Qaqundah (helping
out all season long) were an integral
part of the Chili Night success. Cruise
of Lights was incredible. Thanks to Kim
Weddon, Kim Willingham, Marlene
Nielsen and all the Islanders that
loaded and unloaded buses, worked the
docks, will call, answered phones, and
assisted wherever they were needed.
Thanks to spouses, too! Of course,
we couldn’t do it without the help of
CORE, including Brian Griley, Lynne
Myers, Kathy Andrews, Kim Weddon,
Craig Ferguson, and, again, the
energetic Marlene Nielsen. We are trying
to find a way to bottle that energy.
Many Islanders joined our ribbon
cutting ceremony at the Huntington
Harbour Yacht Club, and had a super
time. They made sure city officials and
members of the Huntington Beach
Chamber of Commerce felt extremely
welcome.
Now, the Grand Marshal Gala Event
is coming up. Kim Sandoval, Susan
Qaqundah and Mary Amen are making
sure everyone will have a fabulous time.
You can be sure Islanders will be there in
droves! We have a lot of fun, and work
hard to bring music programs and education
to our local children.
We’d love to have you join us! For
information, please call 714-625-0228.
Trinidad group “rocks”. We spent
the holidays working for our wonderful
Cruise of Lights, 50 years of this special
event. You could find Trinidad members
working in the Philharmonic office,
“freezing” while loading people on boats
or buses, working “Will Call”, or commentating
for our cruise guests. These
pictures reflect our dedication to the
wonderful cruise of lights.
Trinidad members could also be
found at Chili Night/Reinvestment
Night. This event takes place during
our cruise and we invite the schools
that receive monies from Philharmonic
to attend and tell us about their music
programs and how our monies help their
schools. HHPC Parliamentarian, Linda
Axel and Lyn Senske handed out checks
to the local schools involved in this program.
The local news station was there
fi lming this event as this was our 50th
anniversary year.
As the winter months roll around
you will find us ushering at the concerts
for the children of Orange County and
doing music mobile for our third graders.
Our January meeting was at Linda Axel’s
house and then on January 18th we had a
fun party at Linda and Bob Axel’s home.
This event was catered by Stone Fire Grill.
This event was for new members.
SYC Commodore’s Ball 2012
On November 10, in the Queen
Mary’s beautiful Verandah Grill
Ballroom, 70 members and guests
gathered for the club’s annual black tie
Commodore’s Ball. Everyone looked
great. The 4 bridge officers were rocking
matching white dinner jackets with
full officer regalia. After cocktails and
delicious hors d’oeuvres (mini beef
Wellingtons, crab cakes, spanakopita),
Staff Commodore Jim Woods called us
to dinner and honored the club with an
inspiring invocation.
Dale and first mate Sue recognized the
selfless efforts of those who made 2012
such a success. Event hosts in attendance
were called forward, thanked for their service
and presented with a small token of
appreciation -- a set of stainless steel BBQ
tools in a custom box bearing the club
burgee and event hosts’ names. Dale and
Sue also gave special thanks to the 2012
board members, presenting each with an
Boat Parade entry
Another winner for the planners,
designers and builders of our entry in the
Boat Parade. Our volunteers consistently
create winning entries for this event. As
always our special thanks go to Robin and
Jean Clark for the generous donation of
their boat “Fintastic” for our entry and
the consistent energy and leadership of
Bob McCormick. This year our entry was
awarded the Best Yacht Club. We look
forward to next years design and entry.
Happy New Year from SYC.
The New Year’s Eve Party was a fantastic
finish to another great year. We had
a beautifully decorated clubhouse complete
with all the fi xings even a Rotating
Flashing Disco Ball and a balloon drop as
the clock struck midnight. The DJ along
with his professional singers and Karaoke
rocked the night away. We had a lot of
very talented members whose Karaoke
rivaled even the professionals.
There were almost 100 partiers who
danced well past midnight. And, as we
all watched the ball drop at midnight 240
balloons were released making for a truly
great show. We welcomed our newest
members Gordon Hunt and Barbara Hart
with their new Burgee. To top off our
evening a guest on our waiting list, Wayne
Phillips, proposed to Dianne Kajikawa.
He got a “YES”. This was a great start for
the New Year.
Job well done by hosts Commodore
Commodore Mike Courtway & Sharon,
Christmas Tree Wonderland was
truly that. There were many unusually,
creatively. decorated Christmas trees.
There were beautiful baskets with such a
variety of goodies in them. Many of the
one of a kind donated items were true
treasures. The beautiful black glama mink
and white fox fur blanket caught my eye.
It certainly beat my fuzzy throw. We all
bought raffle tickets, then set out to put
them in the box for the item of our dream.
Some of our winners were Mike Nielsen.
Bobbie Sheldon and Angela Hartfelder
who bought a six month membership
donated by Huntington Harbour Yacht
Club for her brother-in-law. Barbara
Larson bought the other six month membership
to the yacht club and is also going
to join La Familia.
Joyce Brown. Honoree. for all her years of devotion and work for the children of Orangewood.
The highlight of the day was the
Honor paid to our own Joyce Brown
for her many, many years of tireless love
and devotion to Orangewood children.
Without her this wonderful event would
have ended many years ago. Her determination
kept it going and it grew and
grew into a wonder affair with a lovely
luncheon and fashion show at the Hilton
29
in Costa Mesa, with all profits going to
help the children.
We love to welcome new members
and have them join our parties or even
join our board of directors. For more
Huntington Harbour Garden Club
Members of the HHGC got in
the spirit of Christmas by visiting the
Horticulture Department of Orange
Coast College on November 30th.
Marian Galanis was instrumental
in arranging this field trip to learn about
the poinsettia culture of OCC. Professor
Joe Stead managed to squeeze some time
in his busy schedule to lead garden club
members on a tour of the department. The
gardens were full of surprises: rock gardens,
succulents from far away locations
like Madagscar, exotic palm trees. Our
guide was justly proud when he showed us
Compassionate

Resident of Coral Cay
the many plantings he had designed since
joining the OCC faculty. These gardens
are open to the public. The highlight of
the tour was visiting the five large poinsettia
greenhouses.
Professor Stead explained that OCC
started growing poinsettias for the holiday
season 35 years ago. Beginning with a
modest 100 cuttings that first season, the
department’s curriculum now includes a
class in poinsettia culture. This semester,
he and his 18 students nurtured 12,300
cuttings until they were ready for sale to
the public in the beginning of December.
30
Acquiring these beautiful plants has
become somewhat of a holiday tradition
for the OCC community; 85 percent
of the plants are already sold through
pre-orders before the day of the sale.
Compared to poinsettias sold in stores,
the OCC plants are much fresher since
they go directly from the greenhouse to
the buyer.
The Christmas spirit continued when
club members held their annual Christmas
luncheon at the home of Laurie Hill,
mother-in-law of club president Doreen
Hill. At one time Laurie Hill was an active
member of the HHGC, but nowadays she
and her husband shuttle back and forth
between their homes on Catalina Island
and in Huntington Harbour. The luncheon
was a potluck affair with members
bringing their favorite traditional holiday
dishes. Norma Gibbs was in attendance
after having been absent for the past
couple of month. Her health has much
improved and everyone was happy to
hear Norma read her favorite Christmas
poem reminding us of the true meaning
of Christmas.
After a short business meeting
everyone socialized, ate, drank, and
participated in another club tradition:
the judging of original floral centerpieces
submitted by several members.
The centerpieces ranged from elegant
to whimsical. The competition was tough.
Barbara Simone’s arrangement won fi rst
place. Her centerpiece consisted of a ring
of plant cuttings, collected from her beautiful
garden, flanked by two lime green
candles – very elegant indeed. Other winners
were Pearl Holmes, Doreen Hill and
Barbara Devlin. Looking at the arrangements
gave members ideas on making
their own arrangements for the holiday.
Another Christmas tradition was
carried out after the luncheon. Kay
Sullivan and Donna Longman delivered
favors to the Roger’s Senior Center. These
special favors lend a festive note to the
Christmas meal trays. This annual project
is in connection with Meals on Wheels
Senior Outreach of Huntington Beach.
Another gardening year has come
to a close. New and exciting projects are
on the agenda for 2013, with members
already preparing for a Luncheon and
Fashion Show Fundraiser in April.
Anyone interested in finding out what the
HHGC is all about is invited to attend
our next meeting on January 15, 2013.
Huntington Harbour Art Association
by Jackie Dvorman
The waterfront home of Mary
Ludin was ablaze with color as the Art
Association displayed its creative works
throughout the rooms of the home. It was
a large show with 117 entries including
Barbara Thorne’s quilt, “Ralph’s World”
showing her husband listening to music
while heading off to Avalon in his little
boat. This quilt won the “Viewer’s Choice
“Being part of a show with such expert
artists makes me feel humble and grateful..”
Pam Smart won first place with
her large felted tote, and Pat McKenna
won first place with her embroidery “Sea
Eileen McCullough, well known local
artist, will judge the entries, and awards
will be given in seven categories at the
champagne reception held on Friday,
March 1 in the Corner Gallery.
An excursion to the Bowers
Museum, organized by Carol Persons and
Barbara Johnson, was followed by lunch
at Tangata Restaurant in the museum.
Members saw a collection of pins from
Madeleine Albright, a display of elaborate
costumes from the fi lms worn by 30 actors
in 25 fi lms, and the Russian collection of
Faberge jewelry and rare objects.
Pam Smart organized a trip to the
extensive California art collection at the
Pacific Club. The members had a rare
opportunity for a tour of the paintings
led by the Director of the Foundation,
Jeffrey Le Plastrier. Luncheon at Bistango
followed the tour.
Huntington Harbour Yacht Club
by Dean Oliver, Vice Commodore
HHYC wins third award in the past four years!
La Traviata
by Lorraine Garafalo
The HHYC team took the
Sweepstakes award again in the annual
boat parade (see cover), this will be the
third Sweepstakes awarded to the club
in the past four years. Hats off to all the
talented and dedicated individuals that
make this happen every year.
The Yacht Club has come a long way
in the past several months, dozens of new
memberships, a total remodel of the interior
of the club house and best of all we
are open every night for beverages. What
is even more exciting is our new Bistro
Menu available in the bar Saturday thru
Thursday to complement our usual Friday
night fare. The dozen or more items are
wonderful, with items for all kinds of
tastes and life styles. Everything is reasonably
priced with weekly specials such as
Taco Tuesdays to spice things up a little.
The Yacht Club has also just acquired
two Cal 20 sailboats, we hope to use these
to expand our youth sailing program and
develop an interest in an adult sailing
program as well. These boats can easily be
made ready to get under the PCH Bridge,
making them perfect for a romantic afternoon
cruise.
The Sea Bells Installation dinner was
incredible; everyone enjoyed a wonderful
meal prepared by our new Chef Steve
Hazelton, while listening to the amazing
sound of the Surf City Singers. Then just
a week later we had our monthly Birthday
Gala, again with fabulous food and live
music by “The Grumps” getting many a
romantic soul on the dance floor.
Club Members got to double the fun
with our “East Coast/West Coast” New
Years Eve party. The fun started early as
we dinned and danced to the East Coast
countdown. Then the fun continued
upstairs in the bar as the ambitious night
owls among us stayed on to ring in the
start of the West Coast New Year.
Reverse Happy Hour on Fridays,
Pool Tournaments, Sunday Brunches,
Sunday Night Football, Taco Tuesdays,
Classic Movie nights, Thursday Night
Football, Smoked BBQ happy Hours,
Burger bashes, Afternoon Cruises to
neighboring Yacht Clubs, Road Trips to
the races and points of interest, Monthly
parties, oh and I almost forgot Cruises to
local ports. We love to keep busy.
We love to see new faces so if love
boating, being around boats, talking
about boats or just plain want to have
fun, while meeting wonderful people, you
need to become an HHYC member. We
would be happy to introduce you to the
Yacht Club as guests at one of our Sunday
brunches and show you how wonderful
our organization is. Or just give the club
a call at 562-592-2186 or contact Vice
Commodore Dean Oliver, in charge of
membership, at 714-858-1444. You may
also visit our website at www.hhyc.org.
Jo Andrews, Chapter President,
invited all active members and their
spouses to a Thank You Party at her lovely
waterfront home. She said: “Although La
Traviata is dissolving, this very good “guild
of friends” will continue to get together
to support local and Center events.” La
Traviata chapter was among those who,
early on, worked so hard in contributing
to the creation of the Segerstrom Center
for the Performing Arts. This party was
not only to honor current members but
those members who pioneered in appreciating
the need for music programs for our
community and schools. We salute them.
Guests enjoyed drinks and snacks
and a fantastic catered buffet. Some congregated
around the piano (with Jackie
Demos playing) to sing-a-long to some
old Broadway favorites.
Little Mermaid Guild of CHOC Children’s
by Marguerite McEntee
The Birthday girl, Lotus Williams, in the middle, surrounded by Little Mermaid Guild members.
The Little Mermaids were delighted
to celebrate Lotus Williams 90th birthday
with her family and friends. Lotus has
been a member of LMG since 1984, and
her granddaughter, Michelle Blake, has
been a major active fund raiser for the
annual CHOC Walk for the last 12 years.
There was a birthday cake in the shape of
“90” and other cakes with Lotus’ picture
on them when she was in her 20’s. Several
large boards covered with family pictures
were on display, among them were pictures
and articles of Lotus receiving the
“Honorary Life Member Award” from
The Little Mermaid Guild in 1997. Five
generations of Lotus’ family were present
in the celebrations! A great time was had
by all.
Our 2012 Christmas Party took
place at the beautiful water front home
of Sandy and Bernie Stinton. Thirty
two Mermaids and Mermen enjoyed the
gourmet cuisine of Chef Jon, a Merman
himself. Hors D’oeuvres and drinks were
served on the deck allowing time to enjoy
the holiday lights decorating the harbor,
followed by a six-course sit down dinner.
Dinner and desert were then followed by
the famous gift exchange when we enjoy
“stealing” each other’s favorite items.
Little Mermaids are looking forward
to another year of fund raising activities
to support Children’s Hospital of Orange
County. For information on our group,
