Methods: A total ong>ofong> 48 subjects ong>ofong> both sexes who were nondrinkers or rare drinkers ong>ofong> ong>moderateong> ong>redong> ong>wineong> were selected and randomly subdivided into two groups assigned to receive with a crossover design a ong>Sicilianong> ong>redong> ong>wineong> (Nero d’Avola or Etna Torrepalino) during meals: Group A (n ¼ 24), in whom the diet was supplemented for 4 weeks with 250 ml/day ong>ofong> ong>redong> ong>wineong>, followed by 4 weeks when they returned to their usual ong>wineong> intake; and Group B (n ¼ 24), in whom the usual ong>wineong> intake was maintained for 4 weeks, followed by 4 weeks when the diet was supplemented with 250 ml/day ong>ofong> ong>redong> ong>wineong>. The following were values measuong>redong> in all tests: blood glucose, total and HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, LDL/HDL ratio, apolipoproteins A1 and B, Lp(a), plasma C-reactive protein, TGFb1, D-Dimer, Factor VII , PAI Ag, t-PA Ag, fibrinogen, oxidized LDL Ab, total plasma antioxidant capacity. Results: At the end ong>ofong> the ong>redong> ong>wineong> intake period, LDL/HDL, fibrinogen, factor VII, plasma C-reactive protein and oxidized LDL Ab were significantly decreased, while HDL-C, Apo A1,TGFb1, t-PA, PAI and total plasma antioxidant capacity were significantly increased. Conclusions: Our results show a positive effect ong>ofong> two ong>Sicilianong> ong>redong> ong>wineong>s on many risk factors and on some inflammatory biomarkers, suggesting that a ong>moderateong> ong>consumptionong> ong>ofong> ong>redong> ong>wineong> in the adult population is a positive component ong>ofong> the Mediterranean diet. The complex relationship between alcohol ong>consumptionong> and human health has been widely studied in recent years. Recent studies, while confirming the adverse effects ong>ofong> excessive alcohol ong>consumptionong>, have demonstrated that ong>moderateong> Correspondence: G Avellone, Via De Gasperi 203, 90146 Palermo, Italy; E-mail: ginoavellone@libero.it Guarantor: G Avellone. One ong>ofong> the greatest stimuli for the scientific study ong>ofong> ong>wineong> ong>consumptionong> has been the discovery ong>ofong> the so-called ‘French paradox’. Clinical evidence originating from epidemiological studies on cardiovascular diseases and food habits indicates a linear correlation between saturated fatty acid dietary intake and the incidence ong>ofong> CAD, with a decreasing trend from countries in northern Europe to the Mediterranean area (Renaud and de Lorgeril, 1994). However, an anomaly has been pointed out in this trend, because in France, despite the high saturated fat dietary intake, there is a lower incidence ong>ofong> CAD, which appears to be related to alcohol intake and in particular to ong>redong> ong>wineong> intake (Artaud-Wild et al., 1993; Kondo et al., 1994). Among ong>wineong>s, ong>redong> ong>wineong> appears to have a more protective effect, as it contains antioxidant substances liberated from the grape skin and seeds.
