Community A Pure choice Pure Taqueria restaurant arrives in downtown Matthews by Kara Lopp kara@matthewsminthillweekly.com Jay O’ Brian knows Mexican food. With a sister who lives in Arizona, visits there include trips to “real” Mexican eateries, he said. In Matthews on business this week, the New Hampshire resident said his meal at Pure Taqueria was “on par” with the best Mexican cuisine he’s tasted out west, he said. O’Brian was among dozens of diners sampling the lunchtime fare at downtown Matthews’ newest eatery Wednesday, Oct. 14. It was the restaurant’s third day of business and though staff admit they’re still fine-tuning the operation, customers didn’t seem to notice. The restaurant’s arrival has been almost two years in the making, after owners fought off a competitor to purchase the lot and wrestled with town commissioners on the design of the building, aimed to mimic Pure Taqueria, 111 Matthews Station St., opened Monday, Oct. 18 in downtown Matthews. The Mexican restaurant, built to mimic yesteryear’s Pure Oil gas stations, is open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. a Pure Oil gas station that once sat in uptown Charlotte. “It’s well-prepared, has good flavor, sauces and salsa,” O’Brian said during lunch Wednesday. “Sometimes Mexican food can be as boring as can be, and this isn’t.” That’s music to Michael Ott’s ears. Coowner of the restaurant, Ott said staff members are eager to hear comments – good and bad. Ott, a Charlotte attorney who lives in Fort Mill, is in business with his fishing buddy and brother-in-law, James Hipp, of Atlanta. They have put the restaurant’s day-to-day operation in the hands of Mint Hill resident John Sarkis, who serves as director of operations. Sarkis has a long history with Showmars restaurants and opened the Mint Hill location almost a decade ago. “We ask people for feedback, negative and positive, because we want to be able to improve,” Ott said. Though the restaurant gleans its name from Pure Oil, pure is the mantra of the food here, Ott said. The restaurant isn’t serving crab now because they won’t use pasteurized crab meat. The Gulf oil spill has hurt the supply of fresh crab.
