Can Do Cubes for Synthetic Phonics School Edition by
Debbie Hepplewhite - Stage One: the simple alphabetic code
Synthetic Phonics is the UK Government’s
prime approach in teaching all children
to read.
One of the most accessible and effective
synthetic phonics available today; can
be uses as a stand-alone programme or
as a multisensory complement to other
programmes (e.g. Jolly Phonics)
A set of 144 hardwood cubes, each cube
being laser engraved with six letters, or
combination of letters, representing different
sounds of speech (phonemes). There are eight
different combinations of letters and eighteen
cubes of each combination. The order in
which these should be introduced is shown on
the bags which contain them and explained in
the accompanying book and DVD.
INCLUDES DVD
The DVD features Debbie Hepplewhite discussing the theory and teaching of Synthetic
Phonics, and ‘sounding out’ (interactive) the 42+ phonemes which make up the simple
alphabetic code.
Two ‘at-a-glance’ word charts list some words that can be formed as the letters on the
eight different cubes are taught.
Stage Two: the complex alphabetic code
These hardwood cubes feature different spellings (graphemes) for individual, identifiable,
sounds of English speech. For example, the cube for the sound /ai/ features ai, ay, a, ey,
eigh and ea. The set also contains uniquely linked cubes for split vowel digraphs (a-e,
e-e, i-e, o-e, u-e including the use of ‘i’ in words such as ‘making’). Cubes displaying
capital letters, for shape/sound recognition and matching with lower case, and basic
punctuation are also included.
The DVD, 150 hardwood cubes, an activities and instruction book, a ‘word bag’ and a
wall chart showing Debbie’s unique ‘simple and complex alphabetic codes overview’
complete this set.
Can be enjoyed by all. No prior knowledge of synthetic phonics is necessary.
