Foreword @ Countdown We put the customer first. We work together to safely do a great job and feel valued. We are passionate about who we are, where we live and are active in the community. Note 1 FY 2012.
Grocery retailing in New Zealand has changed significantly since the first Foodtown supermarket opened its doors in 1958. Today we are a commercially successful enterprise with growing earnings and market share. But this is no longer enough. We are also a responsible retailer, taking leadership positions on issues such as ethical and sustainable food sourcing, environmental sustainability, and health and safety in the workplace. Since announcing our plans to invest $1 billion in our stores in 2009, we have significantly grown our network and reach. With new stores and the consolidation of our former Foodtown and Woolworths stores under the Countdown banner, New Zealanders now have 159 Countdown supermarkets nationwide – offering a great range, low prices and an enjoyable shopping experience. With all the new stores and refurbishment, we have brought next-generation supermarket design to New Zealand. New features include wider aisles, expansive fresh food departments and a wide range of environmental initiatives to help reduce the carbon footprint of our stores. We expect to open eight new Countdown stores and refurbish 13 this year 1 . That will help us to serve our customers even better and cater for growing communities. This is an exciting time for our business, and we are committed to keep setting new standards for supermarket retailing in this country. Dave Chambers Managing Director Countdown
