Performance <strong>Sport</strong><br />
<strong>Newcastle</strong> is one of the top universities in the UK for competitive<br />
sport. We aim to maximise the performance of <strong>Newcastle</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
represent<strong>at</strong>ive teams, building upon our BUSA ranking and the past<br />
achievements of our Athletic Union clubs.<br />
Athletes representing the <strong>University</strong> in a performance sport receive<br />
preferential support through enhanced team funding, professional<br />
coaching and sports science support. It is our intention th<strong>at</strong> all<br />
performance sports will compete <strong>at</strong> the highest leagues eg BUSA<br />
Premier leagues and N<strong>at</strong>ional Governing Bodies (NGB) leagues.<br />
Individual sports people who show outstanding potential will receive<br />
enhanced privileges in an effort to promote them to n<strong>at</strong>ional and<br />
intern<strong>at</strong>ional represent<strong>at</strong>ive standards.<br />
Elite Athletes Squad<br />
The Elite Athletes Squad is a specific support organis<strong>at</strong>ion for up to<br />
20 high performance <strong>at</strong>hletes. Former squad members have excelled<br />
in a wide range of sports including: archery; lacrosse; skiing; netball;<br />
rugby; rifle shooting; rowing; orienteering; badminton; and <strong>at</strong>hletics.<br />
Squad selection criteria is based on past, current and potential sports<br />
performance as well as <strong>at</strong>titude and determin<strong>at</strong>ion to improve in<br />
your chosen sport, whilst maintaining high academic standards in<br />
your chosen subject.<br />
Squad members <strong>at</strong>tend a tailor-made lecture programme covering<br />
topics such as: sports physiology; sports nutrition; sports psychology;<br />
vision screening; injury prevention and management; strength and<br />
conditioning; and lifestyle management skills. The squad is supported<br />
by a team of personal tutors providing sports science support, fitness<br />
assessments, personal training programmes and pastoral support.<br />
Former elite squad members include: Ed Coode, Olympic gold<br />
medallist (Athens 2004); Tom May, professional rugby player with<br />
<strong>Newcastle</strong> Falcons; Ivy Taylor, GB Snowboarding Team (2007);<br />
Hannah Wootton, GB Senior Ladies Orienteering squad and World<br />
Student Games gold medallist (2002 and 2004).<br />
