In our Centennial Year, the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce is proud to present 

the 2011-2012 Community Guide, one of many services offered by your Chamber of 

Commerce. We hope that it will be a valuable reference tool and resource for residents 

and visitors looking for goods and services, important community information, and

As we researched the Chamber’s history in preparation for our Centennial Year, we found

Twenty-three miles north of Chicago’s Loop, the 

city of Highland Park tightly hugs beautiful Lake 

Michigan for nearly five miles. West from the lake, 

the city limits stretch to Deerfield, with Glencoe to 

the south and Lake Bluff, Bannockburn, Highwood 

and Lake Forest to the north. 

Highland Park, approximately 12.5 square miles in 

area, is a lakefront community on the North Shore 

with many natural amenities, including ravines, 

lakeshore and trees, as well as lovely homes with 

distinct architectural and historic character. 

Highland Park is home for more than 30,000 

residents, diverse in its population and abundant 

in its education. One of the many qualities that 

make Highland Park unique is its diversity. It has 

affordable housing initiatives and an ample supply 

of both single-family and multi-family residences. 

At the southern end of the city, on more than 36 

acres of beautifully landscaped and wooded land, 

lies Ravinia Festival. This world-class, summer 

venue for the performing arts has been attracting 

music-lovers from throughout Chicagoland and 

around the world since 1899. It is the summer 

home to the world-renowned Chicago 

Symphony Orchestra. 

This progressive community has more than 850

With apologies to Bachman-Turner Overdrive, 

Highland Park entrepreneurs know all about 

“taking care of business every day . . . and 

working overtime.” And the Highland Park 

Chamber of Commerce is there to take care of 

the people who take care of business, just as it 

has for the past 100 years. 

Since its founding a century ago, the Chamber 

has evolved in innumerable ways, but what 

has remained constant are its commitments to 

building a strong community and to promoting 

existing and new businesses. The group’s 

members work to strengthen the local economy, 

foster an environment of entrepreneurship, 

plan for a sustainable tomorrow, and offer 

networking opportunities that can blur the lines 

between business relationships and friendship. 

“Cha-cha-changes” 

It is astounding to consider the changes that 

have taken place in our city in just over 100 years. 

In the first decades of the 1900s, the Highland 

Park East Park District was established, Ravinia 

Park changed from an amusement park to a 

music venue, Highland Park 

Hospital opened to serve a 

capacity of 20 patients, the 

public library began allowing 

patrons access to the shelves 

so they could select their own 

books, and there was a town 

blacksmith. 

Today, Highland Park boasts 

a park district that operates 

and manages over 650 acres 

of land in 44 park areas, a 

performing arts venue with 

an international reputation, 

a hospital that is part of 

the Chicago metropolitan 

integrated healthcare delivery 

system known as NorthShore 

University HealthSystem, a 

library whose over 23,000 registered cardholders 

can access more than 600,000 circulating items, 

and multiple car dealerships and auto repair 

shops (but sorry Mr. Ed, no blacksmith). 

The Chamber began a century ago as The 

Highland Park Businessmen’s Association to 

promote “home trade” and to foster an attractive 

business district. As business ownership and 

management changed, so did the makeup of 

the Association, and the group was reorganized 

in 1925 as the Chamber of Commerce. Yet its 

new name and management did not dismiss 

the importance 

of the “home 

trade” concept 

stressed by the 

group’s 25 male 

founders. In 

fact the chant 

for home trade 

has remained 

a Chamber cry 

throughout the 

years. 

“It’s smart to 

‘shop local’, and 

now, more than ever, it’s green to shop local too.” 

“If you trade locally, you save valuable resources 

while supporting neighborhood merchants,” 

said Chamber Executive Director Ginny Glasner. 

“Shopping locally not only builds business, it 

builds community. Good citizenry and a good 

business area go hand-in-hand.” 

Entrepreneurs who see Highland Park as a 

thriving, competitive, desirable place to conduct 

business help ensure that the business area 

remains a vibrant part of out community. 

Businesses that thrive take the best of past- 

-such as the feel of a small town and the 

outreach of a service-oriented community--and 

they make it work in a quickly changing, rapidpaced, 

demanding, tech-driven world. This is 

true not only of new businesses, but also of longstanding 

companies that have evolved to meet 

the current business climate and to anticipate 

future challenges. 

The spirit of entrepreneurship transcends time 

and knows no boundaries. New channels for 

distribution have altered the landscape of 

selling for businesses new and old. Today such 

local businesses as jewelry salon Jill Alberts 

Jewelry (469 Roger Williams Ave.), fine crafts 

boutique and gallery Citywoods (651 Central 

Ave.), and Carol’s Cookies (sold locally at a variety 

of groceries and specialty stores) are among 

those that compete on an international level by 

“selling” 24/7, thanks to online visibility. Retailers 

today know that website design is just as 

important as store window design. 

“You’ve Got a Friend in Me” 

The Chamber brings a sense of community to 

business. When Chamber members network, 

they connect as business allies. To that point, 

in 2005 the Chamber formed the Women in 

Business networking group, which meets the 

third Thursday morning of each month. In 2006, 

Chamber networking went co-ed with the start 

of the First Wednesday Networking Group. 

“Chamber networking groups offer attendees 

an opportunity to generate leads, reach new 

customers, exchange information, and build a 

circle of strong relationships with other area 

professionals in an informal setting,” said 

Chamber Membership Development Manager 

Kim Loprest. She added that these networking 

opportunities can “lead to referrals, marketing 

ideas, business development skills, and a common 

voice on City Commissions and committees.”

Some things never change, and they shouldn’t. 

“People always like to do business with those 

they have met face to face, pure and simple,” 

said Chamber President Adam Kaplan. “A little 

handshaking and trading of business cards once or 

twice a month at a networking event can only help.” 

“Keep on Keepin’ on” 

In addition to being adaptable to change, many 

of the community’s oldest and most successful 

businesses have not just retained, but expanded 

on the practices that made them winners in the 

first place. 

High on the list of venerable city businesses is 

BAHR’s Flowers, Inc. (1911 Ridge Road). Tom Bahr, 

Jr., is now in charge of the business that was 

started by his family in 1894. Just as the business 

was passed on to him, so was the emphasis 

on offering customers only quality plants and 

gardening items. A company mantra is, “If you 

wouldn’t buy it yourself, don’t sell it.” 

The way BAHR’s treats a customer hasn’t 

changed over the years, Bahr said. “We want to 

know about a customer’s home, garden, plant 

preferences, dog—we get personal with our 

customers so we know what they like, what 

works for them, and how best to help them.” 

Mark Williams, owner of Williams Ski and Patio 

(1672 Old Skokie Road), also said twin secrets 

to the success of his business are excellent 

customer service and a knowledgeable sales 

staff who help customers zero in on what works 

best for them. Williams has operated a Highland 

Park store with a ski and patio specialty focus 

since 1969, but the family-owned business 

started in Chicago in 1875 selling buggy tops, 

awnings, and other canvas items.

Kathryn and Thomas Bahr, Jr. 

Like Williams and Bahr’s, First Bank of Highland 

Park (1835 First Street), established in 1955, is also 

known for its personalized service. “The reason the 

bank has done well over the years is quite simple,” 

said bank President and C.E.O. Randy Green. “We 

remain focused on providing competitive products, 

which we combine with superior customer service. 

We also believe in the importance of communityminded 

corporate citizenship.” 

Another mainstay in the community is Country 

Kitchen (446 Central Avenue). Peter Dimitriou 

started the restaurant 33 years ago. His 

daughter Ruby Dimitriou literally grew up in the 

restaurant, and she started working there on 

weekends when she was 13. Five years ago, she 

became the owner, but her dad still opens the 

restaurant every day. 

“We offer good food, and we offer good service,” 

Dimitriou said. Over the years, the personal 

connections with customers have grown 

stronger, but very little else has changed in the 

restaurant (“same portions, same quality”). 

Dimitriou explained Country Kitchen’s business 

theory, “If it works, don’t change it.” 

She said being a Chamber member keeps her 

“in touch with what’s going on in town.” She 

also said, “it’s nice to be a part of a group that 

supports Highland Park.”

Cortesi brothers started the business in 1937. 

Today, Sunset annually supports nearly 300 local 

organizations by taking part in fund-raising 

activities, sponsoring events, and donating money.

In 2010, one of the seventy businesses that 

opened in Highland Park was SoShee Boutique 

(599 Roger Williams Avenue). “I’m not stressed 

about having a new business, I’m excited,” said 

SoShee’s co-owner Michelle Burden. She believes 

in her new venture, plus she said “it’s fun to learn 

something new.” 

Burden thought Ravinia would be the perfect 

location for a “neighborhood store where 

women could come and get a present for a 

friend or something cute for themselves.” So 

last November, she decided the time was right to 

“step out of the box” and open the business with 

Texas-based partner Wendy Banks. 

Also new to the Ravinia business district

Williams Ave.). Owner Bill Tobias said, “One of 

the unique things we do is to take old sideboards 

and turn them into ‘one-of-kinds’ by putting 

granite tops on them. People don’t want to go to 

their neighbors and see everything they have in 

their own home—they want their home to have 

unique kitchens and bath (furnishings), and we 

are able to offer them that.” 

Tobias previously had his business in Logan 

Square, but he said the timing was right to 

relocate to Highland Park because most of his 

clients were from the North Shore. 

Likewise, Jeff Shapiro, owner of Real Urban 

Barbeque (610 Central Avenue), said it was 

the right time last November to open his first 

restaurant after a lifetime in the business. The 

entrepreneur said that Real Urban Barbeque 

hit the ground running in large part because 

the barbeque had been introduced at Taste 

of Highland Park a few months before the 

restaurant opened.

“We were welcomed by the Chamber of 

Commerce and the Downtown Highland Park 

Business Alliance into the Taste of Highland 

Park, and it really paid off for us. It gave us great 

exposure,” he said. “When we finally did open, 

we had people come in our doors for the first 

time saying, ‘We’ve been waiting for you!’” 

“The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta 

Wear Shades” 

In his foreword to the 1968 Highland Park 

Community Handbook and Business Directory, 

then Chamber President Hal A. Petit wrote: 

“Can you picture Highland Park five, ten, or 

twenty years from now? Its future depends in

a large degree on the cooperative effort of all 

segments of the population working together. 

In some communities there has been a lack of 

cooperation, and these cities have deteriorated. 

That will not happen in Highland Park, because 

we all recognize the importance of both a fine 

residential community and a strong commercial 

structure.” 

Petit would be pleased over 40 years later to 

see how the Chamber has flourished and how 

the efforts of entrepreneurs have contributed 

to the high quality of life in Highland Park. The 

entrepreneurial spirit is alive, well, indomitable, 

and growing in our community. Businesses that 

are about to, or have just put out the welcome

(1823 St. Johns Avenue), Benjamin Restaurant 

(1849 Second St.), Fresh Skin Aesthetic Medicine

To celebrate 100 years of business growth and 

economic vitality in Highland Park, the Highland Park 

Chamber of Commerce hosted a Centennial Gala 

on Sunday, November 14, 2010 at the Highland Park 

Community House. The evening highlighted Highland 

Park’s business history and how the community has 

grown into the appealing and energetic business 

environment it is today. Guests enjoyed cocktails, 

food stations, raffles and prizes. The Centennial 

Gala also served as the Chamber’s Annual Meeting 

to induct its new officers. A Chamber Awards 

Presentation for Business Excellence honored 

businesses for their commitment to the Chamber and 

community in several categories, including: retail, 

service, dining, nonprofit, entertainment and “still 

missed, still loved.”

Fourth of July parade in Highland Park

of Commerce’s Dixieland Band and the 

Bike and Pet Parade. More than 300 

children, dressed in patriotic colors come 

downtown for this fun event to ride 

and walk in the parade with decorated 

bikes and pets. The theme for this year’s 

parade is “The Highland Park Chamber of 

Commerce celebrates 100 years!”
