Vybz Kartel & Akon
There seems to be very few singers who
posses a distinctive voice that separates them
from any other entertainer. For example,
Michael Jackson was the "Smooth Criminal"
among all vocalists back in the 80's, but has
deteriorated since then. He has become
freakier than ever, his later songs haven't
been too exhilarating and he's accumulated
more tabloid gossip than any kindergarten
boy should have to go through. When the
"Prince of Pop" left the Neverland Ranch for
the Himalayas (or whatever Middle Eastern
country he lives on now), he left his crown in
the sandbox. Fortunately for every gangsta
rapper, Akon has picked it up and filled the
void.
Akon wisely started his effort off on a high
note with the powerful “Ghetto Soldier”
featuring Papoose. Over a sombre beat
supported with militaristi-style drum patterns,
Papoose cleverly compares his harsh streetupbringing
with troops who experience war.
KEY SELLING POINTS:

Meanwhile, Akon stands his ground by singing,
“I don’t like to fuss or fight/Just trying to live life
right/Don’t take my kindness for weakness
cause I will take your life.”
A Konvict's Song is well orchestrated and quite
arguably, Akon’s best effort to date. It's going to
be hard for him to top this one.
Akon’s debut album ‘Trouble’ went triple platinum
Akon has been so busy recording with the hottest rappers and he’s made so much
music, he was able to compile a collection of songs that haven’t been released for
one reason or another. He made these gems available via his street effort A
15. Bonus Track
Gnarls Barkley has quickly become the most
colorful rap outfit in recent memory. The funloving
Atlanta duo, comprised of
producer/deejay Danger Mouse and
rapper/singer Cee-Lo Green, are all about
making vibrant music and performing on stage
in funky costumes worn by characters in movies
like Austin Powers and The Wizard of Oz. Aside
from playing the role of international men of
mystery and walking on the yellow brick road,
they bumped into the Aphilliates as they
traveled their journey to happy-go lucky, musical
dominance. So, they toasted some
marshmallows over an open fire and decided to
put down a mixtape for a collaborative effort,
thus making heads take A Trip to St. Elsewhere.
Cee-Lo Green and Danger Mouse serve as
excellent tour guides for St. Elsewhere and by
the end of the trip, it's easy to understand why
St. Elsewhere is perhaps the most
underappreciated island within the Hip-Hop
community. Unlike most rappers who spit about
guns and drugs over the same recycled street
beats, Gnarls Barkley goes outside of bubble
and allows every song to have its own identity.
From the urban gospel "Go to Church" to the
emotional soul searching in "What It Is" featuring
Scar, the gentleman of Gnarls consistently deliver
quality music with versatile messages.
The collaborations are just as terrific. The boys out
Outkast join them on soulful "In Due Time" and the
upbeat "Git Up Git Out." "Timbaland, the producer
who helped bring sexy back, adds some heat to
"I'll Be Around," while Jazze Pha and T.I. team up
with the boys for a love song all club goers will
enjoy, entitled "The One." Even when working with
friends, Gnarls Barkley keeps their edge.
What a wild, strange trip it has been to St.
Elsewhere and what a great one at that. Other
artists should use this mixtape as a guide on how
to make their next projects more original.
KEY SELLING POINTS:

Featuring the smash single Crazy
Gnarls Barkley remixes "Feel Good Inc." by the Gorillaz and while most remixes are
played-out and poorly executed, they successfully pull this one off. They keep the
original beat, hook and background vocals the Gorillaz record, and integrate their
verses into the track
There are several negative stereotypes
floating around the world and it’s difficult
erasing them. In the case of The (White)
Rapper Show, Egotrip and VH1 aimed to
portray Caucasian Hip-Hop artists in a
positive light, but they fell short of the
target.
Instead of showcasing the lyrical ability of
aspiring white emcees, viewer’s will
probably only remember segments
where contestants were cleaning dirty
laundry and smacking each other around
with sexual objects.
Evidently, the show has angered several
popular [real] white rappers. Since VH1
lacked showing the talent of true
Caucasian emcees, Bay Area’s Dutch
the Great decided to recruit several other
artists – Bubba Sparxxx, Haystak, Grant
Rice and Obnoxious among others – to
record a special compilation entitles The
[real] White Rapper Album, Volume 1 to
show how talented white emcees are.
Packed with other energetic records and
diss tracks, it’s blatantly obvious that white
boys can rap and make good music too.
music - depicting his intimate experiences with
poverty, racism, corruption and heart-felt stories
that expose the truth behind newspaper headlines.
Growing up in a predominantly African-American
influenced by other local artists such as Tupac
Shakur, Digital Underground, Richie Rich, E-40,
Dru Down, The Luniz, Too Short and many more.
Living only a block away from Spice 1 in Patriarch’s
West Hayward neighborhood, Patriarch would see
a lot of the artists he grew up listening to visiting the
East Bay Legend Spice 1, and would only inspire
him to pursue music even more.
It is the dichotomy of the struggle of the African in
America and the plight of the Palestinian that
makes Patriarch’s choice to rap a natural one. With
a determination to change the world through his art,
this Son of a Refugee is destined to touch the lives
Mellowmen
Tomorrow’s Sound Today
The Mellowmen – from Sweden – traffic
in a slightly different type of Rainbow
Quartz-esque pop and rock. The album
is more piano-based than your typical
RQ band – but with gorgeous vocals and
beautiful, pristine songs that truly do
cover both pop and rock, this band and
album are going to be a wonderful
surprise for our fans. Think 10cc and
Paul McCartney meets The Beach Boys
or the Moody Blues. Jim McGarry, label
owner, likes to compare the band’s
sound to 1990s indie darlings The
Sneetches.
The band members are Andreas Nyberg
(vocals & piano), Jonas Lofgren (bass &
vocals), Peter Nyman (drums &
percussion), Anders Lofgren (lead guitar)
and Johan Antonsson (guitar).
They cite some of their influences as The
Who, The Beach Boys, Francis Lai, Air,
Ladytron, Sparks, The Beatles, and the
Rolling Stones, among others.
“The Mellowmen…play a particularly tuneful brand of mid-60s-styled pop albeit with
some modern touches. They can probably be best described as a cross between…The
Winnerys and The Sails and contemporary Swedish pop acts like The Soundtrack of
Our Lives…nicely utilizes piano and a horn section to augment the basic guitar-bassdrums
setup…sounding like something McCartney would have written circa Revolver.” -
absolutepowerpop.blogspot.com
“This is where peace, love and understanding meets sex, drugs and rock-n-roll.”
Hailing from Spain, The Shake are an
extremely cool neo-garage, slightly
mod, very psychedelic pop/rock band
offering up an album of perfectly
sculpted songs dripping with
harmonies with guitars both jangly
and crunchy – it is truly
Revolveresque material – reminding
the label of the glory days of Cotton
Mather. And yes, they sing in
English!
A quick listen will easily convince that
The Shake grew up on a steady diet
of Sonics, Easybeats, Kinks, Who,
and Flaming Groovies – but we at the
label like to think that the band has
very much in common with such 21 st -
century bands as the ablvereferenced
Cotton Mather, the
Greenhornes, Creatures of the
Golden Dawn, and The Hives…and
album track “Stop the Show” even has
the sophisticated feel of Aja-era Steely
Dan.
In 2006 they were invited to the
prestigious IPO festival and played at
the mythic Cavern Club of Liverpool.
[The Shake] make their influences clear from the beginning, so that nobody is
mistaken…think Easybeats and Creation meets Small Faces…Full of riffs and shining
refrains, their excellent sound is muscular and powerful, more in line with The Who
crossed with The Kinks. The Shake convince without effort. Fans of classic guitar pop
will collapse from excitement. – translated from popthing.com
A swinging set of tunes with just an occasional peep out of the ’65-’66 time frame,
though all of them sounding just as contemporary as they are MODern…should make
you not only “shake”, but shout-n-shimmy as well. – Popism-music.com
Asuncion
“There’s a new Spanish word for
floating: Pacifika. Who knew that
Vancouver could be home to a rock
en espanol duo every bit as potent
and progressive as Colombia’s
Aterciapelados” Asuncion, the new
album fro Silvana Kane, Adam
Popowitz and new member, Toby
Peter (formerly of K-Os) breaks away
from the breezy Latin-Pop of their
debut and soars into the mystic.
Authentic and beautifully recorded
percussion, strings and electronics
bubble and roil beneath Silvana’s
emotive and fragile delivery (this time
singing completely in her native
Spanish) while Adam’s guitar
textures ebb and flow from gentle
warm winds to menacing fuzzed-out
thunderheads. Pacifika loosens the
bonds of formal pop structure to allow
these ten gorgeous tracks and the
listener to escape gravity’s pull, if only
until the next play.” Cal Koat (World
Trailer (s)
LYE is LOVE:SEX:DEATH:ROCK. Fans
of NIN, White Zombie, and The
Smashing Pumpkins will fall in love with
this band. The band possesses an
extremely high-energy, in your face rock
show that never disappoints.
“They're glammy, they're gothy, they're
four pretty people playing angst-spiked
doom rock.” – chartattack.com
“The band began playing like banshees
and filled the room with such electricity to
cause another black out. There is
something about watching Lye perform,
the angst, the insecurities, the pain – all
real and evident…Not only is Lye
mesmerizing as a band, but they exude
despair mixed with cautious trust.
Definitely a show worth catching, even if
you don’t think you’ll like a goth/industrial
band – think again.” – torontoindie.com
“Toronto, Canada based band Lye present
a debut that not only combines indie rock,
grunge, industrial, and electronica in a
quite infectious way but also carries away
on a musical maelstrom of emotions.” –
virus magazine
The Hard-Rocking, heavy-hitting metal band
POWND hails from Kentucky, promising to capture
the ears of fans of this genre with their brand of oldstyle
rock armored in metal. The range and subject
matter and diverse stylistic influences is evident in
their 11 song label debut CIRCLE OF POWER.
Continuing in the tradition of some of rock's most
successful bands, POWND was founded by
brothers Michael and Ronnie Duncan.
Vocalist/songwriter Michael boasts formidable
songwriting chops and a virtuostic range, while
guitarist Ronnie’s incredible taste and attention to
tone helps create the grooves that define POWND's
melodic mega-riff sound. POWND formed in 1996,
self released two previous fan based underground
albums, that were sold faster than the band could
burn them, during their relentless touring of almost
every state in America. Dispite their goals to take
their music to a higher level, POWND never
compromised their music by jumping on the latest
trends. POWND has toured with ICED EARTH,
ROB HALFORD, OPETH, NEVERMORE,
CHILDEREN OF BODOM. In their passion for
bringing their music to the masses, POWND’s
music will be featured in the upcoming horror movie
"STASH", and they will tour extensively in 2007 in
support of their new release "CIRCLE OF POWER".
