There seems to be very few singers who 

posses a distinctive voice that separates them 

from any other entertainer. For example, 

Michael Jackson was the "Smooth Criminal" 

among all vocalists back in the 80's, but has 

deteriorated since then. He has become 

freakier than ever, his later songs haven't 

been too exhilarating and he's accumulated 

more tabloid gossip than any kindergarten 

boy should have to go through. When the 

"Prince of Pop" left the Neverland Ranch for 

the Himalayas (or whatever Middle Eastern 

country he lives on now), he left his crown in 

the sandbox. Fortunately for every gangsta 

rapper, Akon has picked it up and filled the 

void. 

Akon wisely started his effort off on a high 

note with the powerful “Ghetto Soldier” 

featuring Papoose. Over a sombre beat 

supported with militaristi-style drum patterns, 

Papoose cleverly compares his harsh streetupbringing 

with troops who experience war. 


 

 

 

Meanwhile, Akon stands his ground by singing, 

“I don’t like to fuss or fight/Just trying to live life 

right/Don’t take my kindness for weakness 

cause I will take your life.” 

A Konvict's Song is well orchestrated and quite 

arguably, Akon’s best effort to date. It's going to 

be hard for him to top this one.

Gnarls Barkley has quickly become the most 

colorful rap outfit in recent memory. The funloving 

Atlanta duo, comprised of 

producer/deejay Danger Mouse and 

rapper/singer Cee-Lo Green, are all about 

making vibrant music and performing on stage 

in funky costumes worn by characters in movies 

like Austin Powers and The Wizard of Oz. Aside 

from playing the role of international men of 

mystery and walking on the yellow brick road, 

they bumped into the Aphilliates as they 

traveled their journey to happy-go lucky, musical 

dominance. So, they toasted some 

marshmallows over an open fire and decided to 

put down a mixtape for a collaborative effort, 

thus making heads take A Trip to St. Elsewhere. 

Cee-Lo Green and Danger Mouse serve as 

excellent tour guides for St. Elsewhere and by 

the end of the trip, it's easy to understand why 

St. Elsewhere is perhaps the most 

underappreciated island within the Hip-Hop 

community. Unlike most rappers who spit about 

guns and drugs over the same recycled street 

beats, Gnarls Barkley goes outside of bubble 

and allows every song to have its own identity. 

From the urban gospel "Go to Church" to the 

emotional soul searching in "What It Is" featuring 

Scar, the gentleman of Gnarls consistently deliver 

quality music with versatile messages. 

The collaborations are just as terrific. The boys out 

Outkast join them on soulful "In Due Time" and the 

upbeat "Git Up Git Out." "Timbaland, the producer 

who helped bring sexy back, adds some heat to 

"I'll Be Around," while Jazze Pha and T.I. team up 

with the boys for a love song all club goers will 

enjoy, entitled "The One." Even when working with 

friends, Gnarls Barkley keeps their edge. 

What a wild, strange trip it has been to St. 

Elsewhere and what a great one at that. Other 

artists should use this mixtape as a guide on how 

to make their next projects more original.

There are several negative stereotypes 

floating around the world and it’s difficult 

erasing them. In the case of The (White) 

Rapper Show, Egotrip and VH1 aimed to 

portray Caucasian Hip-Hop artists in a 

positive light, but they fell short of the 

target. 

Instead of showcasing the lyrical ability of 

aspiring white emcees, viewer’s will 

probably only remember segments 

where contestants were cleaning dirty 

laundry and smacking each other around 

with sexual objects. 

Evidently, the show has angered several 

popular [real] white rappers. Since VH1 

lacked showing the talent of true 

Caucasian emcees, Bay Area’s Dutch 

the Great decided to recruit several other 

artists – Bubba Sparxxx, Haystak, Grant 

Rice and Obnoxious among others – to 

record a special compilation entitles The 

[real] White Rapper Album, Volume 1 to 

show how talented white emcees are.

With Palestinian and North African Roots, Patriarch 

embraces the struggles of the world through his 

music - depicting his intimate experiences with 

poverty, racism, corruption and heart-felt stories

Growing up in a predominantly African-American 

and Latino community, Patriarch was immersed in 

West Hayward bred rap artists such as Spice 1 and 

influenced by other local artists such as Tupac 

Shakur, Digital Underground, Richie Rich, E-40, 

Dru Down, The Luniz, Too Short and many more. 

Living only a block away from Spice 1 in Patriarch’s 

West Hayward neighborhood, Patriarch would see 

a lot of the artists he grew up listening to visiting the 

East Bay Legend Spice 1, and would only inspire 

him to pursue music even more. 

It is the dichotomy of the struggle of the African in 

America and the plight of the Palestinian that 

makes Patriarch’s choice to rap a natural one. With 

a determination to change the world through his art, 

this Son of a Refugee is destined to touch the lives 

of true hip hop fans, make a difference and

The Mellowmen – from Sweden – traffic 

in a slightly different type of Rainbow 

Quartz-esque pop and rock. The album 

is more piano-based than your typical 

RQ band – but with gorgeous vocals and

cover both pop and rock, this band and 

album are going to be a wonderful

mod, very psychedelic pop/rock band

melodic mega-riff sound. POWND formed in 1996, 

self released two previous fan based underground 

albums, that were sold faster than the band could 

burn them, during their relentless touring of almost 

every state in America. Dispite their goals to take 

their music to a higher level, POWND never 

compromised their music by jumping on the latest 

trends. POWND has toured with ICED EARTH, 

ROB HALFORD, OPETH, NEVERMORE, 

CHILDEREN OF BODOM. In their passion for 

bringing their music to the masses, POWND’s 

music will be featured in the upcoming horror movie 

"STASH", and they will tour extensively in 2007 in
