<strong>Psalm</strong> <strong>of</strong> pra<strong>is</strong>e: 103:2<br />
Prayer<br />
<strong>Psalm</strong> 25:9<br />
Scripture read<strong>in</strong>g: John 13<br />
Scripture text: John 13:1, 15; Catech<strong>is</strong>m <strong>Lord</strong>’s Day 51<br />
It was just before <strong>the</strong> Passover Feast. Jesus knew that <strong>the</strong> time had come<br />
for him to leave th<strong>is</strong> world and go to <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r. Hav<strong>in</strong>g loved h<strong>is</strong> own <strong>who</strong><br />
were <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, he now showed <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> full extent <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> love. (John<br />
13:1 NIV-UK)<br />
I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. (John<br />
13:15 NIV-UK)<br />
Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t’s d<strong>is</strong>ciples were people just like us – with <strong>the</strong> same k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> weaknesses:<br />
• Arrogance<br />
• Malice<br />
• Quarrelsome<br />
Hence <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t delivered a touch<strong>in</strong>g sermon to <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
• Not <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> sermon we are used to.<br />
• In th<strong>is</strong> sermon <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t also demonstrated how <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> sermon<br />
should be put <strong>in</strong>to practice.<br />
The <strong>the</strong>me <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> sermon: You must love your neighbour and make sacrifices reflect<strong>in</strong>g your love.<br />
It was <strong>the</strong> night before <strong>the</strong> crucifixion.<br />
• Tension prevailed – <strong>the</strong> charged atmosphere was becom<strong>in</strong>g more and more <strong>in</strong>tense, because<br />
it was a time <strong>of</strong> severe tension for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t.<br />
• But <strong>the</strong>re was also tension <strong>in</strong> <strong>heaven</strong>.<br />
• And also <strong>in</strong> hell.<br />
For Satan <strong>the</strong> tension was surely <strong>the</strong> worst.<br />
• Th<strong>is</strong> was go<strong>in</strong>g to be h<strong>is</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al effort to annihilate <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t’s aton<strong>in</strong>g sacrifice.<br />
• He had already planned <strong>the</strong> arrest and crucifixion <strong>of</strong> Jesus.<br />
• To make sure that he succeeded <strong>in</strong> destroy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus and that <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ciples would not<br />
be able to spread <strong>the</strong> gospel, he also tried <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se f<strong>in</strong>al moments to annihilate <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Lord</strong> Jesus.<br />
• He wanted to util<strong>is</strong>e <strong>the</strong> human weaknesses and s<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ciples to annihilate <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong>’s<br />
work and h<strong>is</strong> legacy.<br />
Judas was also among <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ciples.<br />
• The devil had already persuaded him to hand Jesus over to <strong>the</strong> Sanhedr<strong>in</strong>.<br />
• The <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t knew all th<strong>is</strong>.<br />
o He also knew that He was go<strong>in</strong>g to die.<br />
1
o And He knew that it was go<strong>in</strong>g to be terrible – so much so that He would cry out that<br />
even God had forsaken Him.<br />
In th<strong>is</strong> passage <strong>the</strong> apostle John emphas<strong>is</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> fact that Jesus had foreknowledge <strong>of</strong> everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that was go<strong>in</strong>g to happen to Him.<br />
• He did it with a reason, because he wants us to understand that whatever Jesus did dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that particular night had been planned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>est detail.<br />
• Noth<strong>in</strong>g happened by chance.<br />
o Everyth<strong>in</strong>g was designed <strong>in</strong> detail.<br />
o The <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus could go through <strong>the</strong> entire process <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> crucifixion <strong>in</strong> one way only,<br />
as well as confirm<strong>in</strong>g h<strong>is</strong> legacy, because He knew beforehand what was com<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> where our Scripture text comes up. If we had foreknowledge <strong>of</strong> all th<strong>is</strong> we would certa<strong>in</strong>ly<br />
have tried to escape from it.<br />
• But <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus approached it differently.<br />
• He loves us – and because <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> love He wanted to free us from Satan and h<strong>is</strong> power over<br />
us.<br />
Hence He bore <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> love for us.<br />
• Out <strong>of</strong> love for us He died.<br />
• On th<strong>is</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g He was mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al preparations.<br />
Look at th<strong>is</strong> love <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t.<br />
• Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> not passive love.<br />
• In <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> love <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus <strong>is</strong> at work.<br />
• He went to <strong>the</strong> cross because h<strong>is</strong> love for us had driven Him <strong>the</strong>re.<br />
Let’s now have a look at <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ciples.<br />
• They could also sense that someth<strong>in</strong>g important was go<strong>in</strong>g to happen.<br />
• They must have real<strong>is</strong>ed that th<strong>in</strong>gs were mov<strong>in</strong>g towards a culm<strong>in</strong>ation-po<strong>in</strong>t.<br />
• But how did <strong>the</strong>y respond?<br />
They m<strong>is</strong>understood it all, and everyth<strong>in</strong>g that happened <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y also handled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wrong way.<br />
• Apparently <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same op<strong>in</strong>ion as <strong>the</strong> Jews <strong>in</strong> general, namely that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus<br />
would be a Messiah <strong>who</strong> would free <strong>the</strong>m from <strong>the</strong> Romans and make <strong>the</strong>m world rulers.<br />
Hence <strong>the</strong>y were expect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus to establ<strong>is</strong>h h<strong>is</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom right <strong>the</strong>re.<br />
• Everyone already env<strong>is</strong>aged a certa<strong>in</strong> position for himself.<br />
• Inevitably it resulted <strong>in</strong> a d<strong>is</strong>pute as to <strong>who</strong> was considered to be <strong>the</strong> greatest.<br />
• We read about it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel accord<strong>in</strong>g to Luke (Luke 22:24):<br />
Also a d<strong>is</strong>pute arose among <strong>the</strong>m as to which <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m was considered to be greatest.<br />
The <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus did not take part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> conversation.<br />
• He did not partake <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>pute.<br />
• Then, suddenly, He wanted to teach <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> answer to th<strong>is</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> d<strong>is</strong>pute.<br />
• He responded by wash<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir feet.<br />
Let’s look at <strong>the</strong> background <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> act. In those days people wore sandals.<br />
• They had to walk to reach <strong>the</strong>ir dest<strong>in</strong>ation – no o<strong>the</strong>r means <strong>of</strong> transport unless <strong>the</strong>y had a<br />
donkey.<br />
2
• Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> why <strong>the</strong>ir feet were always quite dirty from sweat and dust.<br />
• Also, <strong>the</strong>ir feet hurt after hav<strong>in</strong>g walked some d<strong>is</strong>tance.<br />
o Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> probably why <strong>the</strong>ir host arranged to have <strong>the</strong>ir feet washed when <strong>the</strong>y came to<br />
v<strong>is</strong>it.<br />
o The host had a slave <strong>who</strong> was responsible for wash<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> guests’ feet.<br />
Ano<strong>the</strong>r reason for th<strong>is</strong> custom was that people did not sit down at a table to eat.<br />
• The “table” was set on a carpet or on a table with very short legs so that everyth<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong><br />
table was with<strong>in</strong> easy reach for <strong>the</strong> people ly<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong>ir sides next to <strong>the</strong> table.<br />
• It would <strong>the</strong>refore be quite unpleasant to have your fellow guest’s dirty feet close to your face<br />
while you were eat<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Now back to <strong>the</strong> night before <strong>the</strong> crucifixion.<br />
• The <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t was <strong>the</strong> Host at th<strong>is</strong> meal – <strong>the</strong> last Passover that became <strong>the</strong> first Holy<br />
Communion (<strong>Lord</strong>’s Supper).<br />
• But He had no slave to wash <strong>the</strong> feet <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> guests.<br />
It was not a matter <strong>of</strong> course that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus Himself had to wash <strong>the</strong> feet <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> guests.<br />
• The custom was that, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> a slave to do <strong>the</strong> job, <strong>the</strong> least among <strong>the</strong> guests had<br />
to wash <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs’ feet.<br />
Let us aga<strong>in</strong> look at <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ciples.<br />
• None <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m even considered to take <strong>the</strong> bas<strong>in</strong> and wash <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r d<strong>is</strong>ciples’ feet – not even<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus’ feet.<br />
• Their po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> d<strong>is</strong>pute <strong>is</strong> also significant.<br />
o It was about <strong>who</strong> was considered <strong>the</strong> greatest/most important/highest <strong>in</strong> rank among<br />
<strong>the</strong>m.<br />
o It was not about <strong>who</strong> was <strong>the</strong> least or <strong>the</strong> most humble.<br />
In th<strong>is</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t, <strong>the</strong> Host <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> meal, got up from <strong>the</strong> meal. Obviously <strong>the</strong>y had already<br />
started eat<strong>in</strong>g without hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir feet washed!<br />
• The <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus started wash<strong>in</strong>g everyone’s feet.<br />
• He had taken <strong>of</strong>f h<strong>is</strong> outer cloth<strong>in</strong>g and wrapped a towel round h<strong>is</strong> wa<strong>is</strong>t.<br />
So <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t <strong>made</strong> Himself a slave.<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g a slave means two th<strong>in</strong>gs to us.<br />
• First it shows where we stand <strong>in</strong> relation to God.<br />
• By h<strong>is</strong> example <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g a slave <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t requires you and me to love our<br />
neighbour with a sacrificial love.<br />
Do not, however, judge <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ciples too harshly.<br />
• They were just like we are – it could just as well have been you or me be<strong>in</strong>g present that<br />
even<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
• That even<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>y – just like us so <strong>of</strong>ten – did not quite understand why <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t<br />
had come to <strong>the</strong> earth and what exactly h<strong>is</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom implied.<br />
When <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus got up, poured water <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bas<strong>in</strong> and washed <strong>the</strong>ir feet, He <strong>made</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<br />
understand that He loved h<strong>is</strong> own so much that He Himself wanted to cleanse <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
• So clean that <strong>the</strong>y could stop hat<strong>in</strong>g, be<strong>in</strong>g arrogant and stop quarrell<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
• So clean that <strong>the</strong>y could jo<strong>in</strong> Him at h<strong>is</strong> Holy Supper.<br />
3
• So clean that <strong>the</strong>y would eventually jo<strong>in</strong> Him at h<strong>is</strong> eternal banquet <strong>in</strong> <strong>heaven</strong>.<br />
Hence <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ciples received a place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>of</strong> <strong>heaven</strong>.<br />
• However, not because <strong>the</strong>y achieved it through <strong>the</strong>ir d<strong>is</strong>pute,<br />
• but because <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t had secured it for <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
• The place <strong>the</strong>y received <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>of</strong> God <strong>is</strong> not where <strong>the</strong>y thought it would be.<br />
The d<strong>is</strong>ciples did not understand it and th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> why Peter said,<br />
No, said Peter, you shall never wash my feet. (John 13:8 NIV-UK)<br />
Then <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus answered Peter:<br />
Jesus answered, Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.<br />
(John 13:8 NIV-UK)<br />
The <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus wanted <strong>the</strong>m to th<strong>in</strong>k vertically.<br />
• It’s not about your feet – it’s about <strong>heaven</strong>.<br />
• It’s all about your d<strong>is</strong>position – <strong>the</strong> condition <strong>of</strong> your soul.<br />
• Unless <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t cleans us, we can never enter <strong>heaven</strong>.<br />
In fact, God’s love reaches us through th<strong>is</strong> Jesus <strong>who</strong> went down on h<strong>is</strong> knees before Peter.<br />
• Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> John 3:16:<br />
For God so loved <strong>the</strong> world that he gave h<strong>is</strong> one and only Son, that <strong>who</strong>ever believes <strong>in</strong><br />
him shall not per<strong>is</strong>h but have eternal life.<br />
• And John 14:6:<br />
Jesus answered, I am <strong>the</strong> way and <strong>the</strong> truth and <strong>the</strong> life. No-one comes to <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />
except through me.<br />
• It all means that Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t had to die to restore <strong>the</strong> bond <strong>of</strong> love between God and man.<br />
• Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> possible only because <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus first loved us (1 John 4:19):<br />
We love because he first loved us.<br />
and also our Scripture text (John 13:1b):<br />
Hav<strong>in</strong>g loved h<strong>is</strong> own <strong>who</strong> were <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, he now showed <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> full extent <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong><br />
love.<br />
• Th<strong>is</strong> love <strong>is</strong> not like our love – we are still able to forsake ano<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
Noth<strong>in</strong>g can change <strong>the</strong> love <strong>of</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t, because h<strong>is</strong> love for us <strong>is</strong> everlast<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
• H<strong>is</strong> love for us has never stopped. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> why He was crucified toge<strong>the</strong>r with two murderers.<br />
• Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> why He had to be buried and why He later also rose from <strong>the</strong> dead.<br />
• Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> why He ascended to <strong>heaven</strong> so that, because <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> love for us, He can prepare a<br />
place for us <strong>in</strong> <strong>heaven</strong> where we can live <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hereafter.<br />
The act <strong>of</strong> Jesus wash<strong>in</strong>g h<strong>is</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ciples’ feet symbol<strong>is</strong>es what <strong>is</strong> said <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> previous paragraph.<br />
As Chr<strong>is</strong>t loved h<strong>is</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ciples up to <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> life on earth, He loves us beyond <strong>the</strong> time on earth –<br />
for eternity.<br />
• The <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus washed <strong>the</strong> only <strong>the</strong> feet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ciples, but <strong>in</strong> so do<strong>in</strong>g He showed that he<br />
washes away <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> everyone <strong>who</strong> belongs to Him so that <strong>the</strong>y will be clean with Him.<br />
• And so Chr<strong>is</strong>t restored <strong>the</strong> relationship between God and us – <strong>the</strong> relationship that was<br />
destroyed because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fall <strong>of</strong> man.<br />
4
The love <strong>of</strong> God expressed by th<strong>is</strong> deed <strong>is</strong> so great that He even washed Judas’s feet before he was<br />
allowed to betray Jesus.<br />
We must also remember that we are under an obligation because <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> love <strong>of</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>t.<br />
• We must serve our neighbour with our love.<br />
• We should <strong>the</strong>refore get rid <strong>of</strong> our arrogance and no longer th<strong>in</strong>k that we are better than<br />
o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />
The <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus <strong>the</strong>n said to <strong>the</strong> arrogant, quarrelsome d<strong>is</strong>ciples at h<strong>is</strong> Holy Supper:<br />
Now that I, your <strong>Lord</strong> and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one<br />
ano<strong>the</strong>r's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. (John<br />
13:14-15 NIV-UK)<br />
Chr<strong>is</strong>t’s message <strong>is</strong> after all so clear.<br />
• We must serve each o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> humility and <strong>in</strong> love.<br />
• If we want to be one with Chr<strong>is</strong>t we must also be one with one ano<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
Have you ever noticed how we love our neighbour?<br />
• We f<strong>in</strong>d it so much easier to speak evil <strong>of</strong> somebody than protect<strong>in</strong>g h<strong>is</strong> reputation.<br />
• Liv<strong>in</strong>g a life <strong>of</strong> love with your neighbour does not mean that you should only keep <strong>the</strong> peace.<br />
• It does not imply that you should not fight or quarrel.<br />
• That <strong>is</strong> not sufficient!<br />
The correct lov<strong>in</strong>g relationship with your neighbour <strong>is</strong> a relationship that requires sacrifice.<br />
• In o<strong>the</strong>r words: wash<strong>in</strong>g feet.<br />
• You must reach out to sat<strong>is</strong>fy <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> your neighbour.<br />
And it’s not up to you to decide <strong>who</strong> <strong>is</strong> good enough to share your love. The <strong>Lord</strong> already decided!<br />
• Just remember that Jesus also washed Judas’s feet – although Judas betrayed Him.<br />
• Jesus also washed <strong>the</strong> feet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r d<strong>is</strong>ciples, although He knew that <strong>the</strong>y were go<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
desert Him that same night.<br />
He wanted to die for h<strong>is</strong> people – th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> true love.<br />
We can only serve <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> if we can follow h<strong>is</strong> example. He said so Himself.<br />
• He renounced h<strong>is</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gship <strong>in</strong> <strong>heaven</strong> to come to <strong>the</strong> earth to wash h<strong>is</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ciples’ feet so that<br />
<strong>the</strong>y could sit down at h<strong>is</strong> first Holy Supper with clean feet.<br />
• He left <strong>heaven</strong> to come and die for every one <strong>of</strong> us so that we can go to <strong>heaven</strong> through h<strong>is</strong><br />
redemptive sacrifice.<br />
Let us <strong>the</strong>n live a life character<strong>is</strong>ed by “wash<strong>in</strong>g feet”. Remember what <strong>the</strong> Scriptures say:<br />
For <strong>who</strong>ever exalts himself will be humbled, and <strong>who</strong>ever humbles himself will be exalted.<br />
(Mat<strong>the</strong>w 23:12 NIV-UK)<br />
Will it be worth while consider<strong>in</strong>g yourself too important to make sacrifices for o<strong>the</strong>rs and eventually<br />
lose eternal life?<br />
Follow <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t <strong>in</strong> your life <strong>of</strong> love.<br />
Let us see what we confess about rem<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Heidelberg Catech<strong>is</strong>m <strong>Lord</strong>’s Day 51.<br />

126. Q. What <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifth petition?<br />
A. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. That <strong>is</strong>: For <strong>the</strong> sake <strong>of</strong><br />
Chr<strong>is</strong>t's blood, do not impute to us, wretched s<strong>in</strong>ners; any <strong>of</strong> our transgressions, nor <strong>the</strong> evil<br />
which still cl<strong>in</strong>gs to us,[1] as we also f<strong>in</strong>d th<strong>is</strong> evidence <strong>of</strong> Thy grace <strong>in</strong> us that we are fully<br />
determ<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>who</strong>leheartedly to forgive our neighbour.[2]<br />
