Incorrect
translation
lands couple
in court
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
DOHA
AN expatriate couple, who was
dragged to the Criminal Court
on the charges of adultery has
recently been acquitted of the
charge, says an Al Watan
report. The Criminal Court,
pronounced the couple as not
guilty observing that the charge
was framed against them on
the basis of poor and misleading
translation.
The incident took place
when a Romanian woman,
who had converted to Islam a
couple of years ago and married
a prominent Doha-based
Canadian Muslim scholar,
went to the hospital following
labour pain. Since there were
some complications in her
womb, the woman had to
undergo a surgery.
Soon after the surgery the
woman was reportedly sent to
the police for interrogation.
The police accused the woman
of adultery and refused to
acknowledge even the marriage
certificate shown by her.
The police was reportedly
misguided by the translation
provided by the translator, who
with his limited knowledge of
the Romanian language, misunderstood
the version of the
woman and quoted her wrongly.
An attorney Abdullah al
Mutawa defended the accused
arguing that there are no evidences
to prove the couple
guilty of adultery. The accused
were exonerated of the charge
in February this year because
of lack of evidences presented
by Public Persecution.
