We were fortunate to have had the Brass Ensemble and the Woodwind Quintet from the Colorado Honor Band Association, as well as the Littleton Academy Choir perform at the receptions. Join us this month to view these outstanding works. MAYOR’S AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS Each year the Mayor and the Greenwood Village Arts and Humanities Council acknowledge those individuals and organizations that have made a significant and lasting contribution to the arts in Greenwood Village. NEW — INTRODUCTION TO PASTEL Instructor: Diane Fechenbach Dates: Monday, May 9, 16, 23 Time: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Price: $55 This class is a fun way to learn about painting in pastels. We will talk about types of pastel, from hard to ultra soft, have an overview of equipment and materials needed, and create a painting from beginning to end: planning the painting, selecting materials and generating the first sketches, blocking in; mixing pastels, and finishing the painting. The emphasis will be on learning the tips and tricks of using pastels (without the mess) and on developing and creating paintings. Supplies: Small sketch book or several sheets of drawing paper, preferably white, charcoal or soft (2H or softer) pencil; kneaded eraser; two or three 8x12” or 11x14” papers or prepared boards — any brand , any color; board to mount papers; tape. Please call for complete list of pastels. WHAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW AND WERE AFRAID TO ASK A new painting class at the Curtis Center can give you the answers. Instructor Kevin Weckbach is leading a six month class which meets every Thursday for six hours. Kevin offers this class using the guidelines of his book “A Visual Palette: A Philosophy of the Natural Principles of Painting.” He engages the artist of all levels and style in painting because the principles are foundational and key to the quality of painting. The next offering begins in July for 144 hours. The price is $1,152. You are invited to drop in to observe the dynamics of the current class. Call 303-708-6110 for complete information. “Elegant” was the word many viewers chose to describe the “Greenwood… and Beyond Photography” exhibit. Those who attended the lecture given by jurors Skip Kohloff and Lisbeth Neegaard Kohloff were given some sage advice. • Consider a photograph a marriage between the composition and the presentation. • As to giving the edition number, it varies, but their opinion was, sometimes the fifth copy is better than the first, so the numbers may not have accountability. • Save your prints because there may be a time when you are required to exhibit a body of work. Jurors and the audience were of a single mind as to the delivery of the work. The Curtis Center requires that artists deliver work framed and ready for presentation before the jurying process. This was appreciated and valued by those in attendance. The current jurying by JPEG, which many organizations are requiring, does not give a true reflection of photography.
