Step back in time
Tees Valley’s people are rightly proud of the area’s rich and
exciting past. Why not make the time to explore our long
history of naval endeavour, pioneering railway-building
successes and strong mining heritage?
Captain James Cook is probably Tees Valley’s most
famous son. Born in 1728, in Marton, Middlesbrough
to a Scottish farm labourer and a local mother,
the young Cook showed early signs of the
intrepid explorer he would one day
become when he took off on
solo expeditions to Roseberry
Topping. Having served
in both the Merchant
Navy and the Royal Navy, Cook became the first
person to map Newfoundland during the 1760s
and in 1770 became the first European to make
contact with Australia’s eastern coast. The
Captain Cook Birthplace Museum in Marton
is housed in a purpose-built structure close
to a granite urn marking the spot where
Cook’s first home stood. The museum
holds a number of collections related to
Cook’s life and work. Visitors can view
displays documenting Cook’s natural
history discoveries, personal possessions
and memorabilia from his numerous
voyages, as well as maps, prints and
published accounts of each adventure.

steam locomotive railway had opened
in Stockton in 1825. Now, growing
on this success, Tees Valley rail
companies created a thriving network
of tracks, carrying both passengers
and freight.
Tees Valley’s nautical connections don’t end
with Captain Cook. Visitors at Hartlepool’s
Maritime Experience can wander through a
lifelike reconstruction of an 18th century seaport.
Attractions include the Museum of Hartlepool, the
historic Quayside itself and the intriguing HMS
Trincomalee. This mighty warship is the oldest
afloat in the UK and was Nelson’s last frigate.
Since arriving in Hartlepool in 1987, she has been
painstakingly restored to her 1817 glory when she
was prepared in Bombay for her first voyage.
To learn more about the North East’s
railway history visitors should drop
in on Head of Steam - Darlington
Railway Museum. This 1842
station has recently undergone
major redevelopment and, as well
as interactive audio, visual and
sensory displays, the museum
houses George Stephenson’s Locomotion, which
was built for the opening of the Stockton and
Darlington Railway.
The heritage highlights outlined here can’t tell all
of Tees Valley’s many stories. From the Transporter
Bridge and Yarm Viaduct to Piercebridge Roman Fort
and Medieval Ulnaby, Tees Valley has a history that
gets better every day.
Cleveland’s ironstone was first discovered in 1847
in Skinningrove. Three years later, John Vaughan of
leading ironstone company Bolckow and Vaughan
discovered the rock in the Eston Hills. It was a find
that was to revitalise the area, as Vaughan had
located its richest ironstone source. Eventually,
there were over 80 mines in East Cleveland and
strong communities quickly built up around these
industrial sites. Cleveland Ironstone Mining
Museum in Skinningrove is a great place to learn
more about the importance of ironstone to Tees
Valley’s heritage. As well as giving visitors the
chance to experience life down a mine first-hand,
the museum documents daily life in a pit village.
As the mines became the area’s lifeblood, houses,
schools, chapels, hospitals and working men’s clubs
were built for the miners and their families. With
the mining villages came a more complex network
of railway lines connecting communities to
Saltburn. The world’s first permanent passenger
Kidding about
Tees Valley is a great place for kids. We’ve selected
some special days out, rainy day distractions and
high-octane venues designed for running off excess
energy and having fun.
Whatever your kids are into, they’ll find it
right here. Action-packed days out, chilled
trips to the countryside and beach,
fascinating journeys back in time, handson
creative sessions- all you need to keep
them smiling. First up is Adventure Point
in Darlington, which offers an array of
indoor and outdoor activities to get your
little ones excited. Bigger kids can get
moving on the sports courts or bumper
cars, while younger children will love the
sand and water play areas, climbing frames
and animal petting zone. This venue also
caters for kids’ parties, so it’s ideal for those
taking out bigger broods.
Children who enjoy making art will adore mima’s
(Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art) ongoing
programme of hands-on arts sessions. Also in
Middlesbrough is the recently redeveloped
Dorman Museum, a venue with loads going
on to inspire young minds. Take your kids
on an amazing journey to explore life
in a bomb shelter, local history,
the natural world, ancient
civilizations and Victorian arts
and crafts.

Kids with stars in their eyes will want to return
to Wynyard Woodland Park Planetarium and
Observatory again and again. From a 72-seater
auditorium, visitors can observe the wonder of
events happening light years away in the night
sky. For slightly more recent history, parents and
kids alike always find loads to do at Hartlepool’s
Maritime Experience. Make time for Hartlepool
Museum and living re-enactments of life in Nelson’s
navy and climb aboard HMS Trincomalee, the oldest
ship afloat in the UK. Built in 1817, Trincomalee
allows visitors to experience how seafarers lived
almost 200 years ago. Or, if your kids like to be
outdoors, why not hop on your bikes and take
Hartlepool Marina as your starting point for a ride to
Seaton Carew along the dedicated cycle route? The
ride is easy, short and flat and takes in the coastline
all the way to Seaton Carew.
Kids and animals are always a recipe for fun and in
Tees Valley you’re never far from the natural world.
RSPB Saltholme, a groundbreaking new attraction,
is the area’s most recent wildlife attraction and its
feathered inhabitants have already made it a top
destination for youngsters and adults alike (see
page 26 for a full overview of this new attraction).
Newham Grange Leisure Farm, in Coulby Newham,
gives kids the chance to meet an altogether
different set of creatures. This unique facility gets
children involved in caring for cows, sheep, pigs and
donkeys. They’re also given the opportunity to pet
rabbits, chicks and guinea pigs, as well as some rare
breed creatures. If your children like to get grubby
and find out fascinating facts about the natural
world then Summerhill Visitor Centre’s Nature
Detectives sessions are for them. These brilliant
events are run by Countryside Wardens, who lead
kids on fact-finding missions tracking deers, hares,
foxes and rabbits. Those with strong tummies can
also investigate owl pellets - regurgitated balls of
fur and bones – to find out what our wise friends
have for dinner. Yuk. As well as being a nature
reserve and conservation centre, Summerhill caters
for kids with energy to burn off with BMXing, a
high-level ropes course, boulder climbing and more.
You’ll find full details of kids’ activities and venues
What’s the Yarm in buying?
Yarm, an elegant Georgian town nestled in the heart of Tees Valley, has of late
undergone a retail renaissance. There are delights to discover for every type of
shopper and anyone with a taste for striking architecture and rich history is sure
to find something to catch their eye.
IT’S HAPPENING GUIDE
Yarm Town Centre
12

Enclosed by a horseshoe meander on the River
Tees, Yarm was the region’s most significant
port during medieval times. For centuries it
was the wealthiest town in the area - a fact
its stunning buildings and pretty centre pay
testament to today. Yarm now boasts a mix
of designer boutiques, trendy delicatessens
and family run stores, making it the perfect
destination for a day or two of mellow
browsing.
Yarm’s first stop for shoppers looking for
gorgeous design is The House. Originally built
as a 17th century residence, this handsome
building is now home to designer gear for men
and women from names like Versace, Hugo
Boss, Ralph Lauren, Armani, D&G and Vivienne
Westwood. Those looking for luxury worn
closer to the skin should take a lazy walk along
quaint Danby Wynd to Bizou, a boutique where
intimate indulgence is sold in the form of
beautifully crafted lingerie. Yarm High Street is
packed with independent fashion stores like men’s
clothing emporium McNeil’s, which offers an
old-fashioned personal service.
Ladies boutique Attitudes stocks casual wear,
evening wear, shoes, bags and accessories for
women on the hunt for one-off pieces. Dedicated
shoe shops include Rubie Heels where Milansourced
footwear by Pura Lopez is sold along with
top British names like Audley.
Yarm’s specialist food stores and farm shops attract
locals and tourists alike. One particular favourite is
Borreli’s Delicatessen. Selling delicious Italian treats
alongside fresh local produce, this is the perfect
stop-off for a cup of coffee before an afternoon
spent antique hunting, walking by the river or
admiring the town’s impressive 43-arch viaduct.
Visitors spending an evening in Yarm can take their
pick from the cosy bistros, exclusive restaurants and
traditional pubs that line the town’s cobbled streets.
Catering for all tastes and with the guarantee of a
warm welcome, Yarm is a real Tees Valley highlight.
The thrilling game
Tees Valley is fully geared up to cater for the toughest
extreme sports fanatics. We’ve picked out a few hotspots to
help true adrenalin junkies reach their natural high.
IT’S HAPPENING GUIDE
Whether you’re here for a short break or you
live in the area, Tees Valley is a top place
to try out all kinds of sports. Why not kick
things off with a jump into the unknown from
the UK’s only bridge bungee venue? The
exhilarating 160ft drop from Middlesbrough’s
Transporter Bridge will leave you raring to
sample the full range of Tees Valley sports.
South Tees Motor Sports Park attracts rally
car teams from around the globe and amateurs
can go full throttle on a professional gravel
track in authentic rally cars. The Chris Birkbeck
International Rally School near Saltburn
meanwhile, boasts on-site accommodation
making it an easy choice for a weekend away.
If you want to feel the wind in your hair and
an even bumpier ride, head to the brilliant
Quads 4 All near Hartlepool. This three-track
venue hires out 50cc and 90cc quads and has
a dedicated adults-only route. Stick around
in Hartlepool for a trip to Summerhill Visitor
Centre where 100 acres of land are the site
for high-octane sports including boulder
climbing, BMXing, high ropes and archery.
For wet and wild thrills, Saltburn Beach’s
brilliant surf is perhaps Tees Valley’s bestknown
fun-soaked destination but there’s also a
fantastic selection of more extreme watersports
on offer. Sporting types with the stomach
for it should go with the (rapid-force) flow at
Tees Valley’s purpose-built white water course in
Stockton. For jet and waterskiing the River Tees
Watersports Centre is first choice and the venue
also runs more gentle activities like dragon boating
and rowing. To make a splash that’s really out of
the ordinary make your way to Hartlepool Marina
where walking on water is the latest craze. Once
ensconced in a transparent 8ft Hydroball, you
will be launched onto the water for a taste of the
miraculous. Perfect for adventurers who’ve got the
balls.
great days out,
naturally.
Escape the hustle and bustle of city life at one of Tees Valley’s
tranquil beauty spots, relaxing rural retreats or seaside towns.
GUISBOROUGH FOREST WALKWAY
Situated in Pinchinthorpe, on the outskirts of
Guisborough, this pretty 2.5 mile route follows part
of the old Guisborough Branch Railway Line. From
the walkway, visitors can view Roseberry Topping,
access Captain Cook’s Monument and make their
way to the North York Moors.
SALTBURN
With its fantastic surf, network of shops and cafés
and traditional seaside town atmosphere, Saltburn
is a great day out. Take a trip to the pier on the
Victorian Cliff Lift, walk along the clifftops and don’t
forget to take your surfboard.
ROSEBERRY TOPPING AND
CLEVELAND HILLS
Iconic Roseberry Topping is a deceptively easy walk.
The area has been inhabited for thousands of years
and the hill’s name translates from the Old Norse
‘Odin’s Rock’. The landmark is one of the majestic
Cleveland Hills, which stretch along the northern
edge of the North York Moors and offer walkers a
new experience each time they return.
CROFT-ON-TEES, NR DARLINGTON
A seven-arched bridge spans the Tees from Croft
to Hurworth. On the south side, picturesque
Croft boasts, among other attractions, an 18th
century spa (the ‘Stinking Pits’) and a handsome
12th century church. The idyllic town is also the
childhood home of Lewis Carroll.
A visit to a sandy beach provides a fun day out for
all the family - try your hand at kite flying or have a
Harbouring ambition
Since arriving in the UK, Krimo
Bouabda has opened three
successful restaurants on
Hartlepool Marina. We chatted
to him about food, boats, and
a warm Tees Valley welcome.
As local characters go, Krimo Bouabda is a
Hartlepool favourite. For almost a quarter of a
century the Algerian-born restaurateur has served
up great food to locals and tourists alike. However,
restaurants weren’t Krimo’s first ambition, as he
explains: “I came here to study naval architecture
but didn’t enjoy the subject so I started working in
a pizzeria. My wife, Karen, is from Easington and in
1985 we opened our own restaurant in Tees Valley.”
Named after its owner, Krimo’s started life
in Seaton Carew but when success grew, the
restaurant (and its loyal customers) moved
to Hartlepool Marina – an irony not lost on
Krimo: “I gave up designing boats but now I’m
surrounded by them, they’re everywhere I look!”
The menu, billed as Mediterranean with a North
African slant, appealed to Tees Valley food lovers,
who were keen to support Krimo, as he recalls:
“When we first opened I put an advert in the
local paper asking if anyone sold fresh herbs
to use in the restaurant’s dishes. The response
was amazing – people were growing herbs at
home and I was sent 10 kilos of fresh rosemary!
Tees Valley people aren’t so different from
Algerians – they’re friendly and very helpful.”
Spurred on by the success of their first restaurant,
Krimo and Karen planned to open a familyfocussed
alternative to Krimo’s more formal
eating experience: “We’d built a very good
reputation and Hartlepool was having a marina
built. In 1997 we opened a new restaurant on
the historic quay - Portofino. There was definitely
demand for a more casual place. Our new pizzeria
took off straight away - you can see HMS
Trincomalee from inside Portofino – kids love
it. In 2000 Krimo’s moved to the Marina too.”
IT’S HAPPENING GUIDE
By 2006, Krimo had opened a third restaurant, this
time taking the food in a Spanish direction: “I’ve
always liked tapas and casual eating. My son
Adam looks after Casa del Mar, a place with lots
of tapas dishes, as well as a few steak and fish
mains. We have live music and salsa lessons –
they’re getting quite popular. I’ve even taken up the
acoustic guitar so I can play for our customers.”
And where does Krimo eat out on a rare day off? “If
I’m eating out I often go to Sassari in Middlesbrough
but there are great places to eat out all over
Tees Valley. I wish I had time to try them all!”
A Dunn Deal
When Sunderland girl Laura Lee and boyfriend David Dunn from
West Yorkshire were looking for a wedding venue between their
two family homes, Gisborough Hall delivered on both location
and romance. Laura tells their story.
IT’S HAPPENING GUIDE
24
David and I only met two years ago so
things have moved pretty quickly! We
both work as teachers at Washingwell
Primary School in Gateshead and we
wanted to find a wedding venue that
was easy to get to for both our families. It was pure
practicality that led us to this area but Gisborough
Hall turned out to be the stuff of real romance. We
fell in love with the place straight away.
David had proposed on bended knee one day when
we were out on a picnic. I was half expecting it and
I was worried about the drizzly weather – I didn’t
want to remember being proposed to inside a car!
Originally, we’d planned to get married this year,
but there was a special deal on at Gisborough Hall
for Summer 2008. We were only a few miles down
the road after our first visit when we decided to
just go for it, bring the wedding forward and take
advantage of the venue’s great offer. We were
really excited.
We got married mid-week, on Tuesday 26th
August 2008, just 12 weeks after viewing the
venue. The day was perfect and Gisborough
Hall’s Wedding Co-ordinator Nicola Spacey
was really helpful. She kept in touch lots as
we were making the arrangements and made
me feel confident about how things would
work out. We had 100 guests and around 30
of them stayed at the hotel on the night before
the wedding.
I wore an off-the-shoulder champagne coloured
silk dress and in fact, this was one of the few

details that wasn’t organised by
the venue. A delicious wedding
breakfast and three-course
evening meal, gorgeous flowers
and a sophisticated champagne
reception were all part of our
Gisborough Hall wedding package.
My Grandma made the cake though,
and a good friend iced it so some
details were totally personal.
For me, the best parts of the
day were getting ready with my
girlfriends before the ceremony, and
then the ceremony itself. Our registrar
came from Redcar & Cleveland
Council and married us at the hotel.
I’d been really emotional in the morning
but it was David who cried all the way through our
vows. My little brother Thomas got teary too – he
took some stick for that.
Possibly the most magical part of the day was
when we stepped outside for the photographs. The
weather had been a bit overcast but at that moment
the sun shone brilliantly.
I’d definitely recommend Gisborough Hall as a
wedding venue; the setting is so pretty and the
service we received was exceptional. Because of
our jobs we didn’t get a honeymoon – if we can’t
get abroad sometime soon, perhaps
we’ll pop back to Gisborough Hall
for a luxury weekend instead!
IT’S HAPPENING GUIDE
Tees Valley’s cultural calendar is packed with
vibrant festivals, exciting sports events and
brilliant performances so whatever the time
of year, the carnival spirit is always strong.
We’ve picked out a few key highlights to get
you in the fiesta mood.
Spring 2009
Make sure there’s a spring in your step on Sunday
19th April at the Redcar Half Marathon. The flat
course begins and ends in the pretty 18th century
village Kirkleathem and takes runners through
some of the area’s most scenic countryside.
May is positively packed with things to do in Tees
Valley. Your first destination is Stockton for a
celebration of the town’s newest landmark: the
Infinity Bridge. The footbridge spans the Tees
from the North Shore and the grand opening
event takes place on Thursday 14th May. Another
May treat is the Tees Regatta. This year, the race
has attracted over 300 entries eager to show
what they’re made of on the four lane course,
which runs upstream from the Tees Barrage to
the River Tees Watersports Centre. Mark the
regatta in your diary now: Saturday 16th May.
If you’re more culture vulture than sports fanatic
then you’re in luck. The third Saltburn Film Festival
runs from 14th - 16th May and takes its theme
this year as ‘the Best of British’. The programme
features the films of ‘Little Voice’ director
Mark Herman as well as a number of
inventive short films. A totally
different festival, but one just
as exciting is WorldFest 09,
which runs on Friday 22nd
and Saturday 23rd May.
Hosted by a number of
top venues, WorldFest
brings you a cabaret
evening, a dazzling gala
event, poetry readings,
youth events and more,
all showcasing the talents
of performers from Tees
Valley and further afield.
30

Summer 2009
Middlesbrough Music Live kicks off Tees Valley’s
summer in style on Sunday 7th June. This free daylong
festival is a musical Mecca for pop and rock
lovers. The ultimate feel-good summer celebration,
Middlesbrough Music Live attracts top names to
play indoor auditoriums and specially constructed
outdoor rock, world music and soul stages. The
event also offers festival-goers themselves the
chance to perform in the Xbox Rock Band Zone.
Darlington Community Carnival, now in its 27th
year, always brings a vibe of creativity and colour
to the town and takes place this year on Saturday
27th June. From a well-established Tees Valley
event to a sparkling new highlight - Hartlepool
Dockfest. As anticipation grows for the arrival
of the Tall Ships’ Races in 2010, Hartlepool is
getting in the celebratory mood with the very first
Dockfest. With Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience
as a stunning backdrop and a Big Tent to showcase
music and comedy headliners, Hartlepool Dockfest
will completely take over the weekend of Saturday
4th and Sunday 5th July. A few weeks further into
July and 2009’s Middlesbrough Mela will once
again awaken Tees Valley’s party spirit. Set aside
Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th July and enjoy a
Billingham International Folk Festival
weekend of dance, music, food, arts, crafts and
kids’ events at this exciting multi-cultural event.
Throughout the summer, the festival feeling just
keeps growing. Next up is Stockton International
Riverside Festival (SIRF), which runs from the
29th July to 2nd August. As Europe’s largest
free open-air festival, SIRF has been attracting
excited revellers for 22 years. This, plus a sister
fringe festival of comedy and music, make SIRF
shorthand for party spirit. The first week of
August and things are staying hot for Billingham
International Folklore Festival. Since a modest
start in 1965, representatives from over 90
countries have arrived in Billingham to showcase
the best of global folklore dance and song.
To finish off this hot summer, river festival Take to
the Tees, offers a week of river-based sports and
activities. Centred on the Tees Barrage and Stockton
Riverside from the 22nd to the 28th August, there’ll
also be an amazing flotilla of boats plus heritage
trails, wildlife and bridge walks, cycling routes
and educational pursuits to highlight countless
ways of enjoying the fascinating riverbanks.
Autumn 2009
After a hugely popular first event in 2008, Darlington
Food Festival is back for 2009 with a gastronomic
programme to delight true foodies. Pass the time
watching cooking demonstrations, browsing stalls
of fine local produce and rubbing shoulders with
top celebrity chefs from Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th
October.
As the nights draw in and frostiness bites in the
air, wrap up warm and experience Odin’s Glow
at Roseberry Topping. The striking landscape
surrounding the hill will be lit up to dramatic effect
for a series of magical nights from Thursday 22nd to
Sunday 25th October. The hill’s name is a translation
of Odin’s-Beorge (Odin’s Hill) - a title given to the
area by the Vikings, in honour of Norse God Odin.
During the festival, visitors will be led on a mythical
journey, encountering fantastical creatures and
enjoying thrilling entertainment along the way.
The creatures will be a little more scary and there’ll
be a few ghouls too at Halloween this year, as
Spoo-Quay returns to Hartlepool’s Maritime
Experience - get your tickets quick, they always
go fast.
As we approach Christmas, those on the hunt
for a pinch of seasonal luxury will be returning to
The AV Festival

Winter 2009-10
Tees Valley’s cultural calendar has a few more
occasions to get you in the mood for magic
and sparkles as Christmas draws closer. The
Stockton Christmas Market Festival is four days
of dance, music, carnival parades and stalls
selling everything from gorgeous delicacies
to handcrafted games and toys. This year, the
festival runs from 18th -24th December.
Tees Valley Photography Festival welcomes
winter with a series of workshops, artist
talks and exhibitions in exploration of the
photographic image. Venues across Tees Valley
open their doors to the festival for 2009.
other activities to inspire and entertain.
Also scheduled for February 2010, is the return
of the brilliant AV Festival. An audio visual
extravaganza that stretches from Tyneside to Tees
Valley, Durham and beyond, the AV Festival is the
biggest UK event of its kind. An energetic round-up
of new media, art, film, music and games, the
festival is both a showcase and an inspiration.
buying?
Middlesbrough is perhaps Tees Valley’s best-known
shopping destination. Young, on-trend shoppers love
Linthorpe Road, with its mix of unique boutiques and
high-fashion emporiums. Proudly serving Linthorpe
Road’s most style-conscious shoppers for almost
three decades is the iconic Psyche, which sells
designer clothes, accessories and contemporary
homewares. The town’s largest shopping centre
is The Mall, which has recently undergone major
redevelopment and is well equipped with fashion,
beauty and entertainment stores. The awardwinning
Hillstreet shopping centre meanwhile,
has been welcoming shoppers for over 25 years
and runs regular book launches, competitions and
live performances to keep them entertained.
IT’S HAPPENING GUIDE
Whatever type of shopping you enjoy,
Tees Valley’s got it covered. The sheer
volume and diversity of shopping
opportunities make the area a must-do
for anyone in need of retail distraction.
Beyond Middlesbrough, and the shopping trip
continues. Darlington is a real hub of retail
activity and recently introduced pedestrian
areas and open spaces make shopping in
the town a more relaxing and enjoyable
experience. Over 500 shops are open for
business in Darlington including specialist
retailers, large department stores and all the
most popular high street shops. The town is
also known across the region for its regular
markets. The covered Victorian market opens
daily selling fresh food, a colourful outdoor
market takes place twice weekly and various
speciality markets happen throughout the year.
At the mouth of the River Tees, Hartlepool provides
yet more shopping highlights. As well as having
a gorgeous Marina and fascinating history,
the town is packed with shopping hotspots. A
number of convenient 24-hour supermarkets
serve Hartlepool and on the second Saturday
of every month foodie types can be found at
Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience grazing on
locally produced cheeses, chutneys, meats,
cakes and puddings, among other tasty treats.
Stockton’s vibrant town centre, as well as boasting
the UK’s widest high street, is home to a bustling
mix of independent shops and big retail names.
Also well worth a visit is The Shambles. Built
in 1825 as a food hall, this impressive building
reopened its doors in 2008 to modern-day
34 68 70

gastronomes. The emphasis here is on fresh,
specialist produce so be sure to arrive hungry! For
an even longer shopping history, Guisborough is
the place to be. This 600-year-old market town is
packed with stalls every Thursday and Saturday,
selling both luxury goods and everyday items.
Those who like to be beside the seaside can catch a
breath of invigorating sea air and a few bargains in
Redcar or Saltburn. Redcar’s local businesses and
big brand stores sit happily side-by-side and each
Wednesday a market selling everyday essentials
and a few more unusual items comes to town. A
little further south and pretty Saltburn is the ideal
place to while away an afternoon with its antique
stores, delis and welcoming cafés. Experienced
and amateur surfers alike are to be found at the
famous Saltburn Surf Shop, which doubles up
as a training centre for budding surf dudes.
Wherever you choose to shop in Tees Valley,
you can be sure to go home with an armful of
shopping bags and the intention to return.
ACCOMMODATION
IT’S HAPPENING GUIDE
NEVER HAS QUALITY MEANT SO MUCH
All the accommodation featured in this guide has been quality assessed
by either VisitBritain* or the AA, or has recently applied for a rating and is
awaiting assessment.
Please be aware that ratings may change throughout the year.
To confirm a rating please visit www.enjoyEngland.com or telephone
VisitBritain on 0208 563 3309 or email: feedback@visitbritain.org
For AA ratings, visit www.theAA.com or telephone: 01256 844455 or email:
customer.services@theAA.com
All the national assessing bodies (VisitBritain*, VisitScotland, Visit Wales
and the AA) now assess hotels and guest accommodation (including B&Bs)
to the same criteria and award one to five stars.
The star ratings reflect the overall quality of the experience.
When choosing your accommodation look for the Quality Rose, the
official marque of the Enjoy England national tourist board rating
scheme.
The Enjoy England professional assessors visit every year, carrying out a
routine day visit or an overnight stay in the case of serviced accommodation.
On these occasions, they book in as you would, as a normal guest and test
all the facilities and services.
A quality score is awarded for every aspect of the experience including
the comfort of the bed, the quality of the breakfast and dinner and, most
importantly, the cleanliness. They also score the warmth of welcome.
Places that ‘go the extra mile’ to make your stay a
special one, will be awarded a high star rating and
hotels and guest accommodation may achieve a Gold
or Silver award.
Higher star-rated accommodation tends to have more spacious bedrooms
and bathrooms, and in hotels a higher staff to guest ratio, so service should
be very attentive. At five star, you can really expect to be pampered in
luxurious surroundings!
For serviced accommodation, there are two separate schemes - one
for hotels and one for guest accommodation.
Hotel Categories:
Hotels have a minimum of six bedrooms, but more likely to
have 20+ rooms.
Small Hotels have a maximum of 20 bedrooms and likely to
be more personally run.
Country House Hotels have ample grounds or gardens, in a rural or semirural
location, with emphasis on peace and quiet.
Town House Hotels are in a city/town centre location and are of high
quality with a distinctive style. High ratio of staff to guests.
Metro Hotels are found in city/town centres, offering full hotel services, but
no dinner. Will be within easy walking distance of a range of places to eat.
Budget Hotels are part of a chain of branded hotels offering clean and
comfortable en-suite facilities, 24 hour reservations and a consistent level
of facilities. They are not awarded a star rating.
Hotels have to provide certain additional facilities and services at the
higher star levels. These include:
´ Dinner served five nights a week.
´´ Dinner available every night of the week.
´´´ All bedrooms en-suite (i.e. no private bathrooms).
Room service available.
Permanently staffed reception.
´´´´ 24-hour room service
50% of all en-suites with bath and shower.
´´´´´ Some permanent luxury suites.
Enhanced services such as concierge.
Of course, many lower star-rated hotels may offer some of the above,
but just do not meet all of the expectations for the higher star ratings.
Sometimes a hotel has exceptional bedrooms and bathrooms and offers
its guests a very special welcome, but cannot achieve a higher star rating
because, for example, it does not offer dinner every evening (two star), room
service (three star) or does not have the minimum 50% of bathrooms with
bath and shower (four star).
Guest Accommodation categories:
Guest Accommodation is the category which encompasses
anything from one-room bed and breakfasts to the larger
places found in our coastal resorts, which may offer dinner and
may be licensed.
Bed and Breakfasts generally accommodate no more than six people. It’s
like staying as a special guest in someone’s home.
Farmhouses offer bed and breakfast and sometimes dinner, always on
a farm.
Guest Houses tend to have more than three rooms and may offer dinner to
their guests. Some may be licensed.
Restaurants with Rooms are just that. The restaurant is the main
business and they will be licensed. They generally offer a small number of
bedrooms with all the facilities you would expect and breakfast.
Inns are pubs with rooms which serve food in the evenings, as well as
breakfast. Sometimes access to guest accommodation may
be restricted during the day, but you will be advised on booking.
Guest accommodation tends to be personally run by the owners.
Guest accommodation owners have to provide certain additional
facilities and services at the higher star levels. These include:
- Bathroom/shower rooms cannot be shared with the owners.
- If bedroom not en-suite, then wash basin in bedroom
- At least 50% of bedrooms en-suite or private bathroom
- All bedrooms en-suite or private bathroom
Sometimes a bed and breakfast or guest house has exceptional bedrooms
and bathrooms and offers guests a very special welcome, but cannot
achieve a higher star rating because, for example, they do not have any ensuite
bedrooms, nor can they easily put wash basins in the bedrooms (three
star). This is sometimes the case with period properties. They might not
have the minimum 50% of bathrooms with bath and shower (four star).
Of course, you will find accommodation with 100% en-suite bedrooms at all
the star ratings, so refer to the descriptions in this guide to help you make
your choice.
If you choose to stay in any of Enjoy England’s quality-assessed
accommodation, you can be confident that it has been checked out before
you check in. For more information on the Enjoy England Quality Rose
assessment schemes and the star ratings, go to www.enjoyEngland.com
*VisitBritain is the national tourism agency, marketing Britain worldwide
and England in Britain, France, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands.
Quality is a major element of VisitBritain’s strategy to improve tourism
products and services and the standard of welcome visitors receive.
VisitBritain assesses more than 23,000 accommodation businesses across
nine different Enjoy England schemes. These assessments are provided by
Quality in Tourism on VisitBritain’s behalf.
