D. THE APPLICATION OF THE<br />

CAROLINA CODE IN THIS TERRITORY<br />

Structure <strong>of</strong> the city <strong>of</strong> Brunswick<br />

--five municipalities/boroughs: ALSTADT, HAGEN, NEUSTADT, SACK and<br />

ALTEWIECK<br />

--each had its own town hall, mayors and town councils, court and its own<br />

district church (except SACK)<br />

-and there were two independent ecclesiastical jurisdictions:<br />

i) the cathedral chapter <strong>of</strong> ST. BLASIUS in the city center<br />

ii) the church and monastery <strong>of</strong> ST. AEGIDIEN in the south<br />

- General Council, called the Gemeine Rat: for BRUNSWICK; handled important<br />

matters (comprised <strong>of</strong> representatives <strong>of</strong> the individual municipal councils)<br />

-which had its Higher Court, that handled the <strong>Tempel</strong> <strong>Anneke</strong> case<br />

-and there were also the villages around BRUNSWICK, such as HARXBUTTEL<br />

and Wenden


Carolina procedure for a witch trial<br />

i) the initiation <strong>of</strong> investigation<br />

ii) collection <strong>of</strong> testimony to determine whether<br />

there is a “legally sufficient indication” to proceed<br />

to torture<br />

iii) <strong>The</strong> final stage <strong>of</strong> the trial: the Urgicht:<br />

recording <strong>of</strong> a formal confession and the<br />

subsequent carrying out <strong>of</strong> the sentence
