W
e are now over half way through the
year into Term 3 and our young women
have already participated in a number
of exciting learning experiences.
The first week back saw our Year 8 girls
participating in an exciting action learning
program with our LOTE Enrichment Day. From
dancing to degustations, calligraphy to paper art,
students experienced first- hand the cultures of the
languages we offer at Randwick Girls, having fun
and learning simultaneously. Special thanks to our
LOTE faculty led by Pauline Christodoulides.
Last week we were treated to the first visit from a
student group from our new Chinese sister school,
Xaioshan No 10 Senior School. The week was a
great success, with our girls acting as buddies as
our Chinese sisters experienced our Australian
education system, while our girls themselves
made friendships across the seas.
This sister school relationship complements our
over ten year relationship with our Japanese sister
school.
Year 12 students making the most of vacation
time – story page 3
This visit could not have taken place without the
enthusiasm and effort of Pauline Christodoulides
and the many teachers who welcomed the visitors
into their classes and activities, providing
enriching learning experiences for all students
acknowledging that for all the world’s cultural and
political differences young people can always
laugh and learn together.
Our Year 9 and Year 11 Parent/Teacher Night was
another very positive evening with a very large
number of Year 9 and Year 11 parents attending
to gain insight into their daughters’ learning.
These nights play an important role in the
education process ensuring that our young women
are supported in their learning both at school and
at home.
Principal’s message continued
Thank you all our Year 9 and Year 11 teachers
and to Jenny Baker for her organisation of the
evening
Our annual NAIDOC assembly was held this
week, celebrating the achievements of our
Aboriginal and Torres Islands Australians. This
year’s moving assembly was organised by
Vivienne Floudas and Annio Xenos and
showcased the talents of our Aboriginal students.
Our Year 12 Music, Drama and Visual Arts
students proudly exhibited their talents with a
presentation of their major works at this year’s
MAD night. The evening was an outstanding
success with our Year 12 students again
impressing us with their talent and originality.
Special thanks to our Year 12 teachers who have
supported and encouraged the students throughout
the year and on the night: Michele Sweeney, Sue
Kennedy, Jenny Robinson, Bruce Cuneo, Mandy
Posener, Robina Day, Genevieve Tyrrell, Sam
Giardina and Nadia Sandona.
10 parents with their daughters getting ready to
embark on the last part of their high school
journey. As I looked across the MPC I recognised
the faces of so many of you who have been with
us for the last four years. Thank you for your
ongoing support of your daughters and our school.
You are indeed our school family.
Thank you Dianne Posener, Lance Raskall and
Bruce Cuneo for their efforts to ensure that our
young women make the best of choices as they
progress to Senior School.
Regards,
Heather Emerson
The sun came out after a truly soggy week for our
Big Sisters, Little Sisters, Peer Support Picnic,
where our Year 7 and Year 10 leaders had a great
day’s fun at Centennial Park. Special thanks to our
Peer Support organisers, Reema Ali and Vivienne
Floudas and all those teachers who worked so
hard to make the day a success.
Year 8 were visited by a knight in shining armour
for their annual Medieval Enrichment Day this
week. It was another one of our exciting programs
which encourage our young women to learn by
doing. Thank you to the History faculty for the
organisation of the day and to Benny Kaplinski
and Shaun Phipps who coordinated and managed
the day.
This week has seen the beginning of our school
planning process for 2013 with a week of
meetings to brief students on subject selections for
next year. These have included meetings for Year
8 into Year 9; Year 9 into Year 10 and Year 11
into Year 12 during school time.
Year 10 has been participating in our Senior
Transition Program since last term which
culminated in our Tuesday night Subject Choice
Evening. It was lovely to see so many of our Year
School Holidays, but
no Break for Year 12
Whilst many Year 12 students spent their vacation
studying at home or at local libraries, many took
the opportunity to spend some of their holidays at
school preparing for Trial HSC Examinations, as
well as HSC Practical Exams and the submission
of HSC Major Works. Students attended classes
in Visual Arts and PDHPE Key Learning Areas.
Other Year 12 students spent their holidays
completing final assessment tasks, course
summaries and numerous practice HSC
Examinations in all subjects. Good luck to all
Year 12 students as they prepare for both their
Trial HSC and final HSC Examinations.
Year 12 student JESSICA represented Randwick Girls High School at the NSW Interschools Snowsports
Championships held at the Thredbo Ski Resort during the July school holidays.
Competing against over 80 other competitors in the Girls Division 1 Competition, Jessica performed well
over two days of intense competition. In her first competition she came a very creditable 16 th in the SkierX
event, whilst on the next day she was unfortunately forced to complete her Alpine ski run in very
unfavourable conditions.
Special thanks to PD/Health/PE teacher, Mr Noreika, who travelled to the Snowy Mountains to act as Team
Manager, as well as Lynne (Jess’s Mum) who assisted with the important organisational factors related to
the competition.
Commiserations to Kate who, although instrumental in the school entering the Snowsports Championships,
was unable to compete due to time pressures related to her involvement in NSW CHS Netball, the Zone
Athletics Carnival and preparing for her HSC Trial Examinations. It is hoped that Randwick Girls High
School will be able to enter a Snowsports team at next year’s championships.
