Conferences<br />
In April 2009 the <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Kurdish</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> hosted its first international conference on the<br />
theme <strong>of</strong> The Kurds <strong>and</strong> Kurdistan: History, Politics, Culture. More than 100 delegates from<br />
Europe, North America <strong>and</strong> the Middle East participated in panels which, befitting the<br />
broad theme <strong>of</strong> the conference, covered topics including gender, religion, contemporary<br />
Iraqi politics, <strong>and</strong> <strong>Kurdish</strong> language <strong>and</strong> literature. Distinguished pioneers in the field <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Kurdish</strong> <strong>Studies</strong>, Amir Hassanpour <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Toronto <strong>and</strong> Hamit Bozarslan <strong>of</strong><br />
the University <strong>of</strong> Paris, were invited keynote speakers. Kurdistan Regional Government<br />
High Representative to the UK, Ms Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, was also in attendance.<br />
Many young scholars, including PhD c<strong>and</strong>idates from the <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Kurdish</strong> <strong>Studies</strong>,<br />
also participated in the event, which was an unparalleled opportunity <strong>for</strong> them to<br />
present their work amongst a group <strong>of</strong> eminent scholars <strong>and</strong> peers.<br />
In a closing keynote address, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Bozarslan emphasised the importance <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Centre</strong> in promoting<br />
innovative scholarship on the Kurds <strong>and</strong> Kurdistan.
