BVEF HOSTS 16th ANNUAL COMMUNITY BREAKFAST

The Blue Valley Educational Foundation held its
16th annual Community Breakfast at the Sheraton
Overland Park hotel.
John Holt from Fox 4 News hosted the event. The
breakfast opened with the Pledge of Allegiance
led by Massoud Yeganeh-Kazemi, custodian from
Lakewood Middle School, who became a United
States citizen in 2005.
A video showcasing last year’s BVEF grants
was shown as the guests enjoyed breakfast.
Seven sponsors were recognized by BVEF for
donating at the $5,000 underwriter level: The
Administrative Assistants, Ltd., Bank of Blue Valley,
Capitol Federal Savings, First National Bank, Laidlaw
Education Service, Shawnee Mission Medical Center
and Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP.
Also recognized were the thirty parent organizations
that sponsored the breakfast, an unprecedented
commitment by Blue Valley parent groups.
The highlight of the breakfast was the “State of the
District” address given by Superintendent Tom Trigg
to the nearly 700 attendees. Dr. Trigg highlighted
some of the district’s accomplishments and success
stories, including the Parents As Teachers program,

Colletti from Blue Valley Northwest who aced the
ACT and Sasha Mushegian from Blue Valley North
who received a perfect score on the SAT.
Dr. Trigg also recognized Oshwaryia Pastaper, a ten
year old Morse Elementary student who competed
in the 2006 National Spelling Bee and Krista Spendler
from Mission Trail who was recognized on Capitol
Hill for her winning essay “Together We Can Make a
Difference.”
Dr. Trigg closed with the success story of Blue Valley
Academy graduate Desiree Valerio who could not be
at the breakfast because she is attending college in South
Carolina.
The breakfast concluded with a presentation from three
Blue Valley Northwest seniors who later hosted the
National Association of Student Councils Conference in
Blue Valley in June 2007. BVEF surprised the students with
a check for $5,000 for the grant they submitted earlier
that year. This district-wide event brought more than
2,000 students to Blue Valley from around the world.
This year’s breakfast raised more than $127,000, a 52
percent increase over the previous year and a recordbreaking
amount for the foundation.

BVEF Virtue Vans took off throughout April, proclaimed BVEF Month
by the Board of Education. The BVEF Virtue Vans visited all Blue Valley
schools to announce the staff and student Sunfl ower Ambassadors.
Ambassadors are nominated by their peers and selected based on how
they demonstrate or “live” the seven Blue Valley Virtues: compassion,
courage, honesty, perseverance, respect, responsibility and self-discipline.
A panel of more than 20 community leaders and educators read the
fi nalists’ essays and selected the ambassadors. This is the ninth year for
the ambassador program that focuses on character education.

BVEF MONTH - A HUGE SUCCESS
Surprise Squad, Ambassadors, parents, families and friends
supported BVEF Month in April by visiting sponsor
restaurants: Beach Bums Island, Will Jenny’s, Trolleys and
Atlanta Bread Company. BVEF raised more than $2,000
in donations from the participating restaurants.
The Charitable Chicks boutique raised more than $3,300
for the foundation. The winner of the $250 grant with
the most shoppers was Blue River Elementary. Oak Hill
Elementary won cookies for their school with the most
visitors to Atlanta Bread Company.
CRATE & BARREL HOSTS BVEF
The new Crate and Barrel in Leawood hosted a
private holiday shopping event for the Blue Valley
Educational Foundation in November, 2006. More
than 1,000 BVEF patrons enjoyed appetizers, wine
and desserts as they shopped. Crate and Barrel
donated the $10 reservation as well as 10 percent of
the evening’s sales to BVEF totaling nearly $15,000.

materials for recreational reading.
Newcomer/Beginner ESOL Classroom Resource Kits
Sunset Ridge Elementary $4,635.07

This program will improve student learning through the creation and use
of ESOL classroom resource kits for classroom teachers working with
newcomer/beginner ESOL students.

BVEF GRANTS OF EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE
Academic Reinforcement Program
Sunset Ridge Elementary $4,000
Authors: Tresa Schmitz and Mandy Shoemaker
This grant impacts grades 1-5 in the subject areas of mathematics and
language arts. This grant will allow funding to create additional handson
activities that reinforce skills and concepts taught in the curriculum.
Through developing a database organizing those activities by skill
addressed, teachers can select the best activity to achieve SMART goals.
Funded by Ricoh Business Systems.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
Sensory Stimulation for Students with Disabilities
Leawood Middle School $4,200.00
Authors: Debbie Matthews and Mary Yakle
The program is to enhance the sensory systems of students with severe
disabilities. When the visual, auditory and tactile systems are stimulated, these
students are better able to move and attend to a wider variety of tasks. This
sensory stimulation equipment enhances their positions to improve their
self-esteem, their ability to function, and their ability to make progress in the
educational setting.

Shout Out: Celebrating Our Voices!
Pleasant Ridge Middle School $2,400.00

Although all writing processes mention the role of publishing, students
are rarely given the opportunity to share their work with the community.
Our goal is to enrich student creativity, promote writing skills, increase
self-awareness and enhance self-esteem by providing PRMS students an
opportunity to share their creative writing and artwork in a school-wide
magazine. Students interested in the publishing process will also have an
opportunity to work on the magazine design and layout monthly.

This project will purchase extra books and materials to enrich this new course
being offered. Reference texts, DVDs and novels will help the student to further
understand the textbook and bring the artwork being studied to life.

This project will provide supplies to support the summit and forum activities
that are intregal parts of the NASC Conference being hosted by BVNW in
June 2007.

This annual award honors BVSD’s elementary and secondary Kansas
Teacher of the Year nominees with a $2,500 award to be spent on a
project or program in the recipient’s school. This award was established as
a tribute to Dr. David Benson who served as superintendent of Blue Valley
Schools from 1994 to 2004.

BVEF ANNOUNCES TWO NEW MAJOR GIFTS PROGRAMS
The Blue Valley Educational Foundation has announced two new Major
Gifts Programs: The Silver Society and The Legacy Society.
The Silver Society allows donors to create and name an award or
scholarship designed with their interests and criteria. Upon receipt of
a $25,000 gift to the BVEF Endowment Fund, BVEF commits to give a
$1,000 annual award in perpetuity to a BVSD student, staff member,
school or program of the donor’s choosing.
Dave and Megan Leathers are recognized as charter members of The
Silver Society. The Leathers have named a journalism scholarship at Blue
Valley North High School after Dave’s father, Tom Leathers.
The Legacy Society honors those who remember BVEF in their estate
plan. The Foundation accepts gifts through various planned giving vehicles,
such as wills, trusts, life insurance, and other life income agreements.
BVEF recognized Dr. Randall Oestreicher as a charter member of BVEF’s
Legacy Society. Dr. Oestreicher has made a planned gift in the memory of
his wife Susan Oestreicher, a teacher at Blue Valley West.
