Kyrene schools rated high in quality, performance 

Survey results bode well for efforts to meet fiscal challenges

Kyrene schools have garnered overall approval 

of the way their teachers are educating district 

kids. 

Results of a recent survey were generally positive, 

with many of those responding expressing their 

approval of the district’s quality and performance. 

It was the district’s first survey since 2005. 

Of those surveyed, 88 percent gave Kyrene a grade 

of A or B for overall school performance and quality. 

This was only one percent less than the 2005 results, 

and was much better than the average grade for 

schools in metro Phoenix (53 percent A or B). 

WestGroup, an independent research company that 

works with school districts around the Valley, as well 

as with SRP and the Arizona Lottery, performed the 

research by telephone survey. Overall, 609 surveys 

were completed, with about two-thirds of the total 

coming from current Kyrene parents and one-third 

from non-parents. 

Survey respondents thought that teachers/staff and 

quality of curriculum were the top strengths of the 

district. However, many thought that lack of proper 

financial support was the biggest challenge the 

district faces, with 31 percent of the audience saying 

so. 

Others noted that they thought overcrowded 

classes and lack of parent support were areas where 

Kyrene could improve. 

Results also showed that parents were pleased with 

fine arts and elective offerings, school cleanliness and 

the district’s emphasis on foreign language courses. 

“Overall perceptions of the district and its schools 

are very strong; the ratings and perceptions are very 

similar, if not higher, than what I’ve seen in a lot of 

other districts, especially during these challenging 

times,” said Kathy DeBoer, vice president of 

WestGroup Research, in a presentation at the board’s 

Sept. 11 meeting. 

“Support for the district in general seems to be 

stronger than in other cities, so from our perspective 

it is a very strong report card for the district.” 

Views toward the current temporary 1 percent sales 

tax for education were also positive: 73 percent were 

in favor of continuing the tax, with three out of five 

saying they were “strongly in favor.” 

Of those who opposed, some felt that the money is 

not going to education; others said the tax was 

supposed to be temporary but seems to continue. 

When asked about potential new learning 

opportunities, results were polarized, according to the 

survey presentation. 

Results were mixed on increasing the number of 

school days from 180 to 200 (53 percent approval); 

extending the length of the school day (31 percent); 

and introducing a new year-round school calendar 

(40 percent). 

On the question “Have you ever had a reason to be 

concerned about your (children’s) safety at school?” 

23 percent answered “yes.” Of those, 39 percent said 

that their children had been threatened or bullied. 

Board member Ross Robb said those results were 

“disturbing, but not super surprising,” and that with 

the help of business partners, Kyrene hopes to 

develop a program in the coming months to deal with 

bullying in middle schools. 

“We are going to be proactive through our civic and 

charitable partners in trying to address that issue; 

that’s an issue we take very seriously,” he said. 

The survey will be used as data when the district 

explores options for possible initiatives, said Kelly 

Alexander, the district’s director of community 

education and outreach services. 

She also said that the district hopes to do surveys 

more often because it of its desire to better 

understand “what the community wants” when 

making important decisions. The full survey results

Plenty to G.A.I.N. at annual observance 

Involvement key to crime prevention 

Chandler police are seeking 

neighborhood groups interested in 

this year’s effort that focuses on 

Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods, 

known more commonly as G.A.I.N. 

Kickoff for this year’s G.A.I.N. 

observance is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, 

Sept. 22, featuring a lottery followed 

by neighborhood registration. The 

lottery is being implemented this 

year to ensure all groups are 

afforded an opportunity to request 

police specialty units they’d like to have 

visit their block party, according to 

Chandler PD spokesman Joe Favazzo. 

G.A.I.N. events represent a day to 

celebrate the success of crime prevention 

through community involvement, said 

Favazzo. 

This year’s citywide G.A.I.N. event is 

scheduled 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20. 

Police in Chandler and statewide use the 

weeks before the event to encourage 

neighborhood groups to participate. 

Groups may take part through block parties 

or other types of neighborhood gatherings, 

all of which can be registered for a visit by 

police officers representing various 

functions. Visiting officers include those 

from Patrol, Motorcycle Enforcement, 

K-9s, S.A.U., and Community Services, 

among others.

Tempe G.A.I.N. kickoff activities 

Tempe residents can participate in a 

G.A.I.N. kickoff event at 6:30 p.m.

staff and local police will be on hand to 

provide tips, handouts and information.

Multi-agency ‘Take Back’ event a way to 

dispose of unneeded prescription drugs 

Tempe police are partnering again with 

the Arizona Drug Enforcement Administration 

and more than 50 other law 

enforcement agencies at sites across the 

state for a drug “take back” program 

planned Saturday, Sept. 29. 

Tempe will hold its event at the police 

department’s south substation on the 

southeast corner of Hardy and Carver, 

between Elliot and Warner, in south 

Tempe. 

Police say it’s a way for residents to safely 

dispose of unused, unneeded and expired 

prescription and over-the counter 

medications. Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

Those with unused and expired 

prescription and other medications will be 

placed by the individual into boxes provided 

by the DEA and Tempe police. Law 

enforcement personnel will seal and deliver 

the disposed medications for proper 

destruction. 

The program is unable to safely accept 

glass, syringes, injectables, needles or sharp 

objects, police note. 

There is no need to remove labels with 

personal info; disposables will be 

incinerated by law enforcement. 

Tempe police collaborated with DEA last 

spring, when Arizonans turned in more 

than 6,000 pounds of prescription drugs at 

sites across the state, operated by dozens of 

state and local law enforcement partners. 

According to Tempe police spokeswoman 

Molly Enright, Tempe PD and DEA 

continue to take action on many fronts to 

stop prescription drug abuse, addiction, 

theft and re-sale trafficking. 

“Our goal is to impact accidental 

poisonings and overdoses due to the 

inappropriate use of prescription drugs,” 

said Enright. “Many abused prescription 

drugs are obtained from the home medicine 

cabinet.” 

In addition, Enright noted, flushing 

medications is a health hazard that 

adversely impacts the water supply and the 

environment. 

Police note that the event is designed for 

individuals and families in the community, 

but that it can’t safely accomodate reverse 

shipments from pharmaceutical and 

business distributors.

High schools’ financial 

reporting recognized 

Tempe Union High School District has 

been awarded a certificate of achievement 

for its comprehensive annual financial 

report. 

The designation, from the Government 

Finance Officers Association of the United 

States and Canada, recognizes significant 

accomplishment by a government entity 

and its management. 

Diane Meulemans, the district’s 

assistant superintendent of business 

services, has been primarily responsible for 

preparing the award-winning report. 

In its announcement, the association 

recognized the district’s “constructive spirit 

of full disclosure to clearly communicate its 

financial story and motivate potential users 

and user groups” to read the report’s 

content.

Kyrene taps Valley’s best for its new 

Traditional Academy, a district first

When Wendy Clark’s young 

daughter Caitlyn began facing 

some challenges in school, the 

west Chandler mom was understandably 

concerned. 

“Something was just not clicking 

with her,” Clark said. 

“Caitlyn is very social, and she would 

get distracted easily, and so she was not 

catching on. By first grade, she was 

struggling academically, and by second 

grade she was still having issues.” 

When friends of Clark’s mentioned 

Kyrene Traditional Academy, which 

was scheduled to open for the first time 

in August on the former Sureño 

Elementary campus in west Chandler, 

Clark was initially hesitant. 

“A lot of the parents I knew from our 

neighborhood school, Kyrene del Cielo, 

had looked at Kyrene Traditional 

Academy, but at first I said no to it 

because it is an accelerated program, 

and I didn’t think that would be (good) 

for Caitlyn.” 

A fellow mom encouraged Clark to 

research the school further. The friend, 

who had a background in education, 

told Clark that the Spalding reading 

and Saxon math approaches, planned 

for use by the new academy, are 

outstanding programs that she felt 

would be great for Caitlyn. 

Clark began to attend meetings about 

the school, and after learning more 

about it and its different approach to 

learning, decided to enroll Caitlyn for 

third grade. 

“It just seemed like the right fit, the 

more I learned about it, so I pulled the 

trigger and decided to send Caitlyn 

there.” 

From the first day of school, Clark 

said, her daughter was a changed 

student. 

“She was beside herself with joy and 

told me ‘I love my new school and I 

love my teacher.’” 

Dr. Marianne Lescher, the school’s 

principal, said there had been a longstanding 

discussion within the district 

about opening a traditional school. 

“We knew a lot of our parents wanted 

it, and we knew it was a popular option 

in other districts, but we were not 

initially sure how to go about it and be 

sure the school would be in concert 

with the Kyrene philosophy,” she said. 

After visiting many traditional 

schools across the Valley to see what 

they offered students in terms of 

academics and structure, Lescher and 

other district employees realized it 

would be possible to create a school 

that would be a combination of the best 

aspects of what they had seen in other 

schools. 

“I really feel that Kyrene Traditional 

Academy offers the best package of the 

traditional model. It takes all of the 

important pieces that parents want in a 

traditional school—from the 

instructional materials and the 

uniforms to the emphasis on 

structure—and combines them with 

opportunities for exploration and 

science and collaborative group work.”

the hearts of 

‘Ambassadors’ to 

a land of contrasts 

Because obtaining water requires Masai villagers 

to travel a long distance, they resort to using the 

milk and blood of goats for hydration. The group 

of visitors got a first-hand view of the process, 

which ended with lunch under a cooling acacia 

tree. 

Elephants by the hundreds inhabit the area 

visited by the group of visitors. The elephant 

population has been on a serious decline in 

recent years.

NAIROBI, Kenya — Back in the 1980s, I remember watching a 

Meryl Streep movie, Out of Africa. Twenty-plus years later, that story 

was my inspiration to join a group of Valley professional women on what 

has become an unofficial but incredibly worthwhile “ambassadorial” trip 

to Kenya. 

Africa has been fascinating. The juxtaposition of calm and chaos 

continues to surprise me. 

Our Nairobi hotel is an oasis of calm in the midst of danger; we are 

advised not to leave the premises after dark. Most buildings in town 

have armed guards and all are protected by some form of very visible 

theft prevention. 

Conversely, the grounds at our hotel provide a beautiful display of 

native plants, attracting many colorful and spectacular birds. The frogs 

sing at night and the birds during the day. The people I have met are 

kind and polite, and despite the report of random street robberies there 

seems to be little violence. 

The group I am traveling with is comprised of successful 

businesswomen from metro Phoenix. Our shared interest in women’s 

issues and lifting others to a higher standard of life brought us together. 

The Foundation for Global Leadership coordinated our travels, with 

J’Lien Liese of Oxford Leadership guiding our excursion. Before 

departing, we were informed that Sen. Jon Kyl had designated our group 

as a diplomatic delegation. 

Our first day we met the internationally acclaimed Mercy Musumi, 

executive director of Girl Child Network. She is recognized for her 

extraordinary work with forced child marriages, sex trafficking, female 

mutilation, HIV, water and sanitation. 

Rooted in a millennium of cultural beliefs, eastern Africa is 

challenged to break away from the unsafe rituals to make life secure and 

healthy for its young daughters. Girl Child Network works with these 

issues for Kenya and eastern Africa. 

On our day of arrival, Mercy took us to a traditional Masai village to 

see the work of her organization firsthand. The Masai people live west of 

the city amid a vista of mountains, brush and the occasional giraffe. We 

were greeted by the women of the community, which numbers about 30 

inhabitants. We were struck by the kind faces, the colorful jewelry and 

dress, and the meager dwellings. This community was one of wealth, 

blessed with many children, goats and cattle. 

The children led us to the menfolk of the village, where they 

honored us by slaughtering a goat for lunch. Our goat was killed, dressed 

out and barbecued in front of us. Because their water sources are often 

far from home, the Masai have learned to survive by drinking goats’ milk 

and blood for hydration. So they suffocated the goat and collected the 

precious liquid into drinking cups, careful to not waste a drop. Once the 

butchering was complete they spread the thin strips of meat on sticks 

around the fire. Lunch was served under a broad acacia tree. 

The women used every spare moment to bead the colorful jewelry 

and belts for which they have gained renown. As a gesture of friendship, 

each of us was given a Masai ceremonial necklace. 

We ended the visit in dance and song led by the village elder, the 

participants jumping high during the ceremony. It is a practice for which 

they have gained considerable acclaim, and their chanting voices and 

smiles will forever be etched in my mind. 

Our second day was filled with two highlights. The Karen Blixon 

Estate, home of the entrepreneur, artist and author who inspired the 

book and movie Out of Africa, has been preserved as a museum. 

Once there, I understood why Africa stole her heart. The grounds 

were landscaped with poinsettia trees and a multitude of plants,


overlooked by mountains in the distance. 

Having never touched or been quite so close 

to an elephant before, my favorite was the stop at 

the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. 

Here we participated in the afternoon 

feeding. We were able to interact with the baby 

elephants during feed and play. So fun, but 

muddy to touch and frolic with these gentle 

giants. 

The orphans have a 50 percent chance of 

survival without their mothers. Elephants cannot 

cough because their lungs are attached to their rib 

ages and they easily succumb to pneumonia. 

Without their mothers, the immunity delivered 

through her milk is missing. These babies are 

cared for 24/7. 

Each one is given its own stall and blanket to 

survive. After five years they are returned back to 

the wild. 

Yes, I adopted one! 

One alarming message we received was that 

the Chinese and Japanese laws that prohibited the 

trade in ivory have ended. One deterrent to 

poaching elephants was getting the ivory to 

market. Unfortunately for the elephants, Kenya 

has a new oil find. The Chinese are building roads 

throughout the country and their laborers have 

become the perfect distribution channel for these 

ill-gotten goods. 

Our third day has forged alliances that will 

change lives. We met members of the local 

government, NGOs (known as non-profit 

organizations) and businesses to share insights on 

entrepreneurialism, good-governance, women’s 

rights, and girl child issues. Ann Njogu, 

chairwoman for Centre for Rights Education and 

Awareness, attorney, constitutional expert, 

activist and former candidate for parliament, 

spoke of the challenges and the progress that has 

occurred in her years of working for the greater 

good. She spoke frankly and graphically of the 

threats imposed on some women and children in 

the country. 

I sat next to and became acquainted with 

Roslyn Grace Osoo, who is running for a 

parliamentary seat in the National Assembly of 

Kenya. If she can endure and elude the violence 

inflicted on women candidates, she has a good 

chance of securing the position. 

The Kenyan constitution is a source of great 

pride to the women we met. The constitution 

mandates that the National Assembly of Kenya 

will contain no less than 30 percent from either 

sex. 

Currently, the parliament is comprised of 

only 2.5 percent women. One of those we met 

from a local NGO carries the Kenyan constitution 

with her in book form, each page containing some 

notation or a line highlighted. We evidenced her 

love and faith in the future by the energy invested 

in her book. 

The highlight to the women of Kenya was a 

presentation by Sharon Lechter, co-author of Rich 

Dad, Poor Dad, who spoke about courage, focus 

and financial responsibility. The members of our 

delegation became endeared to all who joined us. 

That afternoon we met with the bankers who 

work for Opportunity International, which 

provides micro financing at selected third-world 

countries. Phoenix native Cindy Schwab-Salem, 

the Southwest regional director, was in town and 

led a tour of some of the successful businesses 

built on their financing. 

I write this article as I get ready to depart for 

the Kenyan bush, where we will observe the 

wildebeest migration.

Aztecs caught in up-and-down cycle as football season gets under way 

The Aztecs experienced up-and-down 

outcomes on the football field over 

the last two weeks, decisively winning 

their game against Dobson 34-13, then just 

as easily losing one the next week against 

Gilbert Highland 7-35. 

Against the Dobson Mustangs, Coach 

Tom Joseph kept up his creative 

playmaking by calling on Corona’s leading 

rusher, James Contes, to throw a pass to 

leading receiver Tevin Mayfield. 

Mayfield caught the ball for a gain of 26 

yards and set up Contes to rush 35 yards to 

score his first of three touchdowns of the 

night. Isaac Niemtschk’s point-after kick 

had the Aztecs up 7-0. 

The Mustangs were then able to pull 

within one by scoring a touchdown but 

missed on the point-after to pull within 1 at 

7-6. The rest of the game belonged mostly 

to the Aztecs, with the Mustangs managing 

to score a touchdown only in the last few 

seconds of the game. 

In addition to three straight rushing 

touchdowns by Contes, Corona highlights 

included a 2-yard touchdown run by 

quarterback Will Sorensen, who was also 

3 for 3 in passing attempts. 

Sorensen’s passing stats were 

impressive in that the team has not been 

especially successful passing the ball so far 

this season. In the Dobson game, for 

instance, the Aztecs had only 7 receptions. 

In addition to Mayfield’s reception for 26 

yards, the Aztecs’ other significant 

receptions included one by Billy Clemens 

for 15 yards; one by George Wright for 14; 

and one by Carter Colton for 8 yards. 

One of Corona’s three quarterbacks 

who have played so far this season, RJ 

Rhiner, was only 3 for 9 for a total of 38 

yards in the air against the Mustangs but 

was very successful handing off and evading 

sacks. 

Corona’s main yardage all season has 

come on the ground from the likes of 

running backs Contes (183 of the team’s 

309 yards for the game), Wright and Blake 

Jones. Even linebacker Cassius Peat 

picked up yardage on the stat sheet for a 

recovered fumble he ran back 49 yards for a 

touchdown against Dobson. 

Peat recovered a Mustang fumble on a 

fourth down and one yard attempt late in 

the fourth quarter, to score the Aztecs’ fifth 

touchdown and put Corona up 34-6. 

If the offensive team seemed to play 

well against Dobson, Corona’s defense was 

outstanding. Altogether, the team recorded 

130 total tackles, with Niemtschk leading 

the team with 8 solo and 12 tackle assists 

for a total of 20 tackles on the night. 

Although 20 Corona players recorded 

at least one tackle, three had more than 

one-third or 48 of the 130 total tackles. 

Neimstschk had 12, Beau Sitton 15 and 

Maceo Brown 13. 

The Aztecs’ game the following week 

against Highland was just the opposite. The 

exception was it was nice to see senior 

quarterback Evan Kinney back on the 

field after missing the first three games due 

to an injury. 

Kinney was able to help the Aztecs 

sustain a 75-yard drive in the second 

quarter, culminating on a 1-yard rushing 

touchdown after a 38-yard run by Contes. It 

was Corona’s only score in the game. 

After that scoring drive, the Aztecs’ 

offense and defense of the past two games 

had a tough time playing against the 

Hawks, ending with a 7-35 loss. 

The Aztecs were 2-2 as they headed 

into an away game at Desert Vista Sept. 21. 

Playing the Thunder on their home turf is 

expected to be a challenge but one that 

could bring big rewards later in the season

schedule doesn’t get any easier when they 

head off to play Cibola Raiders, in Yuma,

Marcos de Niza Football — The No.

Republic Division II- ranked Padres had 

relatively straightforward wins the last two 

weeks. They easily defeated Maricopa 57-6 

on Sept. 7 and then went on to defeat a 

more competitive opponent in Perry, 21-7, 

Sept. 13. 

Currently the Padres are unbeaten at 4- 

0 and should be able to rely on their 

defensive leader Priest Willis, averaging 

over eight tackles a game, along with 

emerging quarterback star Josh Eckley, 

who appears to be gaining confidence every 

game, to keep them on the straight and 

narrow the rest of the season. 

Eckley has completed close to 70 

percent of his passes, averaging over 200 

yards a game in the air, but it may be his 

ability to scramble and make plays on the 

ground that will separate him from the rest 

of the quarterbacks in the Padres’ division. 

As of the Maricopa game, Eckley had 

rushed for over 300 yards, second only to

Mauriece Lee’s 400-plus yardage. Kamron Johnson 

was third, averaging over 35 yards a game on the ground. 

In the air, Paul Elvira is on the receiving end of 

Eckley’s passes, with 22 receptions for 480 yards or over 

120 yards a game as of the Maricopa game. But Jacquese 

Moore has also been on the receiving end as well as Lee. 

The Padres’ offensive line gives Eckley time to throw or 

creates the big holes for rushing yardage, but it’s their 

outstanding defense that stops opponents and gets the ball 

back so the offense can score points and ultimately win 

games. 

The Padres have a number of defensive players who 

have been instrumental in their 4-0 record with a combined 

average of over 75 tackles a game. In addition to Willis, 

seven players average over five tackles a game. 

Derek Craig, who was named defensive player of the 

game, by the Padre’s coaching staff, against both Chaparral 

and Maricopa, averages over nine tackles a game. He is 

followed by Andrew Rodriguez, over eight a game, and 

Richie Becerra with over six per game. 

Becerra was named defensive player of the game 

against Notre Dame Prep on Aug. 24 as was Willis in the 

recent Perry game. 

The Padres have four players who average five tackles a 

game: Jay Mariscal, Anthony Snyder, Logan Palmer 

and Khadeem Stewart. 

In addition, Marcos averages over four sacks a game, 

with Mariscal recorded as having 3½ as of the Maricopa 

game and Palmer and Becerra with 2½ each. 

Up next for the Padres will be another challenging 

game against No. 3 Maxprep.com- and No. 4 Arizona 

Republic-ranked Tucson Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge, who 

are also 4-0 after defeating their last opponents 62-6. 

Both teams average about the same yardage on the 

ground but it’s the passing yardage that may tip the scales 

in Marcos’ way. Marcos averages over 200 yards passing 

while Ironwood Ridge approaches less than 100.

team to victory—the sky would seem to be the limit this 

season for the Padres. 

Tempe Football — Tempe’s football team was able to 

focus its strategy and win the team’s third ballgame of the 

season by defeating visiting Coronado 42-6. 

Sophomore standout quarterback Emanuel Gant 

returned after being injured the week before, completing 9 

of his 12 pass attempts, his longest for 55 yards, and a total 

of 171 yards. Gant also continued his prowess on the ground 

rushing for 49 yards and two touchdowns. 

Massiah Smith also returned after being injured the 

previous week to catch five balls for 105 yards. His longest 

was a 55-yard catch that he ran into the end zone for a score 

in the first quarter. 

Other standout performances included Raija Holt’s 

131 yards in 7 carries rushing which included two 

touchdowns. Holt’s longest run was an 87-yard running 

touchdown on the Buffalo’s first play of the second quarter. 

He also caught the ball two times for 42 yards. 

Johnathan Caraway, used one of his 16 carries for 

67 yards to run into the end zone for one of the Buffalos six 

touchdowns. Victor Perez-Rodriguez was 6 for 6 in 

point-after-kicks. 

On defense, Nojeem Adedule, Oscar Carrizosa 

and Talib Id-Deen all had outstanding games with over 11 

total tackles. Id-Deen had one sack. 

Up next, the Buffalos (3-1) hoped to get another 2- 

game winning streak going when they were due to face off 

against Washington Sept. 21 and then Apache Junction 

Sept. 28. 

Corona Swim and Dive — Corona’s swim and dive 

teams, only two weeks into the season, have already 

provisionally qualified more swimmers for the state meet 

than this time last year, according to coach Ron 

Musgrave. 

“We just competed in our first invitational meet where 

swimmers can qualify for the state meet this past weekend 

at the Wolves Classic at Chandler High School,” said 

Musgrave. “I am very proud of their progress but they will 

need to continue to improve their times to hold their spot 

because only the top 32 will be allowed to compete at the 

state meet.” 

Swimmers on the girls team who provisionally 

qualified at Chandler include Karilyn Quon, who earned a 

personal best in the 500 freestyle by dropping almost 15 

seconds and winning her heat, according to Musgrave. 

Nicole Holly provisionally qualified in the 100 

butterfly with a time of 1:01.51 and in the breast stroke with 

a time of 1:13.81. 

Quon and Holly are also part of Corona’s 4x100 

freestyle relay team, along with Myah Kamani and Amy 

Hong. This relay team has provisionally qualified for state 

with a time of 3:56.15. 

Hong is chasing a provisional time in the 50 freestyle. 

She swam 27.27 at Chandler but needs 26.07 to qualify,

the Chandler meet in the 100 backstroke, 

with a time of 56.86, and in the 200 IM, 

with a 2:04.70 time, as did Ryan Riley in 

the 100 backstroke with 58.97. 

The Aztecs’ boys 4x100 free relay team 

of Quon, Trace Langley, Riley and Matt 

Hurst has provisionally qualified with a 

time of 3:25.74 

Musgrave is expecting Riley to qualify 

in the 50 freestyle since he is only .21 off the 

provisional time, along with Hurst who is 3 

seconds off in the 500 freestyle, and 

Langley who is less than a second away 

from provisionally qualifying in the 100 

backstroke. 

Meanwhile, Chris Tate also only 

needs to drop a second in the 100 butterfly 

to provisionally qualify. He swam 58.31 at 

Chandler. 

The Aztecs are hoping to qualify at 

least four divers for state this year including 

defending state champion Chloe Hacker, 

Hailey Vander bur, Jackson Whitten 

and Andrew Tate. 

“Jackson and Andrew currently need to 

score another 100 points higher or so to 

qualify for state,” said Musgrave. 

The Aztecs were scheduled to compete 

at home against Gilbert, Sept. 20, and Casa 

Grande, Sept. 27, before competing at the 

Trophy Invitational Sept. 28-29. 

“Our swimmers and divers will have 

the Trophy Invitational, the Charger 

Invitational and the Tempe City Meet, 

which are spaced out every two weeks 

through October, to qualify for state,” said 

Musgrave. “This should provide us more 

opportunities improve and qualify more 

swimmers and divers to state.” 

Chandler Invitational Cross- 

Country Meet — Corona, Marcos de Niza 

and McClintock runners participated in the 

18th Annual Chandler Invitational Meet 

held at Tumbleweed Park Sept. 8. 

Corona de Sol Cross Country — 

Corona’s boys and girls cross country teams 

took third at the Chandler Invitational, with 

the Aztecs having close to 50 student 

athletes competing against 23 teams for the 

boys and 18 teams for the girls. Out of these 

50 runners at their first meet of the season 

for the Aztecs, only two were seniors—one 

from each team. 

Jake Whitney appears to be the sole 

senior on a boys team that has 11 juniors, 

seven sophomores and nine freshmen. 

Whitney placed sixth in the senior category 

with a time of 17:13. 

Two juniors, Nate Rodriguez and 

Ryan Normand, actually beat Whitney’s 

time. Rodriquez, who took first in the junior 

class, ran the distance in 16:02 while 

Normand was sixth with a time of 16:48. 

Rounding out the junior finishers for 

Corona are Blake Fischer (11th), Andrew 

Truswell (13th), Nick Creasman (19th), 

Patrick Culling (27th), Sam Rodriguez 

(28th), Tony Delorenzi, Nilesh 

Bissessur, Matt Eachles and Henry 

Eischen. 

The best results for the Corona 

sophomore runners included at 13th place 

for Andrew Eversden (18:16) and 16th 

for Alex Hart (18:48). The rest of the 

sophomore runners included Jonathon

Mundine, Christian Conner and Matt 

Johnson. 

Corona’s freshman runners did well 

against the competition, with Lucas 

Ykema taking third place in 17:54 and Joe 

Austin was tenth with an 18:55 time.

included Connor Pouline, Bryant 

Needham, Josh Reyes, Paul da Rosa, 

Aditya Parekh, Adrian Aldava and 

Nick Phillips. 

The lone senior competing for the Lady 

Aztecs was Victoria Haun, who had a 

great run placing fifth with a time of 20:29. 

Leading the junior team placements was 

Sammie Moore, who placed eighth at 

21:42, and Grace Ashu, who was 14th at 

22:56. Erin Wochner and Hannah 

Webber also finished for the junior team. 

Kelly Naumann was the top finisher 

in the sophomore class when she came in 

14 th with a time of 22:22 while Amberly

Marcos Cross Country — The 

majority of Marcos’ girls cross country team 

is made up of five seniors, all who finished 

in the top 35 out of 79 senior racers in the 

Chandler Invitational Cross Country. The 

rest of the team that competed included 

four juniors, 2 sophomores and one lone 

freshman. 

The Lady Padres ran as a pack all 

finishing within a minute and a half of each 

other. Holly Burns led the pack coming in 

15th with a time of 22.27 while Rachel 

Maher was 21st (22:57), Jessey Tenorio 

close behind at 24th (23:11), Lidia Diaz 

31st (23:54) and Caitlin O’Grady 33rd 

(23:55). 

Junior finishers for Marcos were An 

Tran at 38th with a time of 24:51, and

Alejandro Perez and Greg Agnis

Eastwood throws a respectable 

‘Curve’ ball into his win column 

Having thrown a curve himself 

last month at the Republican 

National Convention—your 

own politics will probably determine 

whether or not you think he threw it for 

a strike—Clint Eastwood stays in the 

stands in Trouble with the Curve. 

But this time, the stands are where 

the action is. Both the speech and the 

movie make the same point, however— 

that Clint isn’t a kid anymore. 

Clint plays Gus Lobel, a scout for 

the Atlanta Braves, veteran of decades 

of sitting in the stands with a notebook 

at high school games. Never exactly a 

ray of sunshine, Gus has been turned 

by old age into a snarling coot. His 

anger is understandable—it’s hard to 

pee in the mornings, and he needs a 

magnifying glass to read the paper. He 

can’t use a computer or any of the new 

statistical methods for evaluating 

players. But his real problem, 

professionally speaking, is the macular 

degeneration that’s placed a blurry 

horizontal band across the middle of 

his vision—right through his view of the 

strike zone. 

A longtime widower, Gus has an 

emotionally distant relationship with 

his daughter Mickey (Amy Adams), an 

overachieving lawyer. An odious young 

whippersnapper (Matthew Lillard) in 

the Braves front office wants the GM 

(Robert Patrick) to get rid of Gus, 

whose contract is nearly up anyway, so 

Mickey risks losing a partnership at her 

firm to join Gus in rural North 

Carolina, and be his eyes as he scouts a 

slugging prospect.

The Cubans are coming and sharing a revolution in 

chamber music. As part of a rare cultural exchange 

between the United States and the Republic of Cuba, 

Lakeshore Music presents the Orquesta de Camara

named for her father’s favorite player—meets a former 

pitcher (Justin Timberlake) trying to carve out a postplaying 

niche for himself in baseball after washing out 

early. Guess what happens between them. Except for an 

odd bit of backstory involving a horse, there’s really 

nothing unpredictable in Trouble with the Curve, either 

dramatically or visually. The resolution of the plot has, 

almost, a fairy-tale inevitability. The director is 

Eastwood’s longtime producer and assistant director 

Robert Lorenz, making his feature debut, but the style is 

very much the same as Eastwood’s—straightforward, 

unadorned narrative, unfolded at a leisurely pace. The 

dialogue, by Randy Brown, is likewise functional. 

The good news is that the picture is still enjoyable and

Gentle act seems effortless. His timing and his iconic, 

narrow-eyed expression make his spitting anger funny, 

and he has a convincing rapport with Adams and 

Timberlake, and especially with John Goodman, excellent 

as his boss and defender. The supporting cast is full of old 

pros—Ed Lauter, Bob Gunton, Jack Gilpin, George Wyner, 

Raymond Anthony Thomas and even Chelcie Ross, who’s 

become a sort of sports-movie good luck charm, having 

appeared in Major League, Hoosiers and Rudy. These 

guys reinforce the movie’s point that while getting old is a 

drag, it doesn’t necessarily make you useless. 

I must warn you right now, from here on I’m going to 

unload all the baseball metaphors I want. So: unlike the 

elegant, quietly intriguing Moneyball, released around 

this time last year, Trouble with the Curve isn’t a grand 

slam, or even a homer. 

Eastwood and company play small ball; they 

methodically get on, get over, get home. And at the end of 

nine, Clint puts another one in his lengthy win column.

Her patients share a simple enough desire: To feel better 

Naturopathic doc finds niche among those who seek out alternatives

Fifteen or so years ago, Lisa Maturo hadn’t been 

feeling her best and decided to make some changes to 

her diet and try some herbal supplements. The 

regimen she followed worked so well that she altered her 

career course and pursued an education in the modern-day 

version of a treatment modality envisioned centuries ago by 

Hippocrates. 

“I had my own experience with naturopathic medicine, 

and I benefited so much from this approach that it really 

inspired me to open my own practice.” 

Maturo, who operates Maturo Medical in south Tempe, 

has been a naturopathic physician for about 12 years. Every 

day, she treats men and women patients for a variety of 

health issues. 

“The main things I do here are thyroid treatments, weight 

loss, hormone balancing and treating a lot of younger 

women who have PMS,” she said. 

“A lot of the hormone balancing realm involves working 

with perimenopausal women using natural hormone 

replacement.” 

Although her patients have different medical conditions, 

what most of them share in common is the strong desire to 

finally feel better, she says. 

“My patients with thyroid issues who have already been 

to another practitioner, like maybe an MD or 

endocrinologist, will frequently say to me, ‘My other 

doctors didn’t listen to the fact that I’m still not feeling 

good, and they are saying my blood work is normal,’” she 

said, adding that many of the thyroid patients she sees were 

either undertreated or on the wrong medication for their 

condition. 

“Those are the patients who I get and who I really look 

for as they need the help. Once they get the correct 

treatment, their whole life changes. Their energy is better 

and they feel so much better, too. It has become my mission 

to help them.” 

Although many 

people are familiar 

with naturopathic 

physicians, Maturo 

said at times she 

still has to explain 

the type of work 

she does and the 

amount of 

schooling she has 

completed. 

“Probably the 

biggest misconception 

is that some 

people assume that 

all I can use for 

treatments is herbs 

or homeopathic 

treatments,” she 

said. “But in 

Arizona, 

naturopathic 

physicians can write prescriptions too. We just tend to use 

more of an integrative approach when treating our 

patients.” 

Naturopathic physicians also take the same pre-medical 

sciences and other courses in college, Maturo said, before 

enrolling in a 4-year medical program. 

What sets naturopathic physicians apart, Maturo said, is 

that they are trained to look more at the various causes of 

health issues. 

“For example, in the case of hormonal imbalances, I 

won’t just prescribe an anti-depressant to treat the 

symptoms; I’ll really go after the cause,” she said. 

“That is really the biggest difference in what I do. A 

naturopathic physician is more likely to look into how 

someone can feel better, and just dig a little deeper. I will 

probably do some testing first, but then I’ll also move into 

lifestyle issues like diet and nutrition and how to change 

things for the better.” 

Maturo said her patients are very appreciative of this 

approach. 

“They often tell me that I am giving them more time and 

attention and working to find out what’s really going on, 

rather than just ‘fix’ them with medication.” 

For people who are considering going to a naturopathic 

physician, Maturo said they should first do a little 

homework. 

“There are physicians who will call themselves a 

naturopathic doctor or ND, but they did not necessarily go 

through all the schooling, and this can be confusing to 

people,” she said. 

“Naturopathic physicians will have ‘ND’ or ‘NMD’ after 

their name.” 

Although her approach to treating patients may be 

different than many medical doctors, Maturo said she does 

not think of herself as being in competition with them. 

“I just realize that our bodies have such a healing ability, 

and I feel that this type of medicine is a lost art,” she said. 

“If we can figure out how to help them, and let the body 

heal itself by making certain changes, I’m hoping we can 

work together to help our patients.”

Tempe residents sought to help with General Plan 2040 

Update will focus on transportation, culture, sustainability

Tempe has put into motion the beginnings 

of General Plan 2040—and Tempe 

residents can play a vital role. 

According to the city of Tempe website, cities 

in Arizona are mandated by state law to produce 

a general overview of projected future development, 

a task which must be completed every 10 

years. 

For Tempe, “[the plan] holds the city’s vision 

for the future and is an expression of how the 

community wants to grow and change over the 

next 30 years,” according to the city’s website. 

The finished plan will include projections and 

hopes for the city’s future, and will be used as a 

“train track” for development through 2040. 

The plan is not set in stone, officials 

emphasize, but is instead a foundation for 

master plans that help create specific development. 

By distributing flyers using the slogans “Be 

Heard” and “Plan Tempe’s Future,” the city has 

made it clear that citizens are welcome to be as 

involved as they like. 

“The General Plan is the community’s vision,” 

said Nancy Ryan, project management coordinator 

for Tempe. 

“We have to reach to find out what they think 

is important for the future.” 

The city will be hosting public open house 

events to answer questions and get feedback 

from the community.

In order to keep the plan completely open to 

the public, portions of the general plan will be 

posted on the city of Tempe website as they are 

written and thus be open to public discussion. 

Surveys will also be posted on the city website 

to collect information from citizens unable to 

make it to public meetings. Tempe will be using 

new technology “to elicit more communication 

and more discussion about what the city needs to 

do to achieve the community’s ultimate vision,” 

Ryan said.The writing process for the plan will 

begin this month and will remain an ongoing 

project through November 2013. 

The plan will then be taken to the city council, 

and if approved placed on the ballot for public 

vote in May 2014. 

The previous General Plan, 2030, was adopted 

in December 2003. 

This plan can be found in full on the city 

website, and features plans for alternative 

transportation, cultural development and 

nurturing a growing sustainable community. 

The 2040 plan will build upon the 2030 plan 

and will adjust for things that have changed in 

the past 10 years, Ryan said. 

An open house for General Plan 2040 will take 

place from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, at the 

Tempe History Museum, 809 E. Southern Ave.

Analysis 

Intel expansion holds greater promise than 1st thought

As the housing market fluctuates and the local 

economy continues to rebound from the worst 

crash in recent years, one of the biggest factors 

in the Chandler area’s ability to stay ahead of the 

others has been Intel. 

Intel most recently announced its plan to build a 

new $300 million facility dedicated to packaging 

operations. The facility will generate over 1,000 

construction jobs and hundreds of high paying 

positions at the new building, which will be located 

on the Chandler campus near Chandler and Rural. 

“Intel has been a boost in the cottage Industry 

where smaller companies benefit from Intel’s 

presence, whether it is retail, office or companies 

affiliated with Intel projects,” said Nora Ellen, 

Councilmember Elect. “Intel has been a good 

corporate citizen while being engaged in volunteering 

and helping in our community, including the school 

system.” 

Ellen was elected to the Chandler City Council in 

the Aug. 28 primary. She has served as a 

Commissioner on the Mayor’s Neighborhood 

Advisory Committee and is a real estate agent in the 

Chandler area. 

The extent of Intel’s benefit on the local economy 

goes much deeper than the few hundred full-time 

jobs talked about earlier. Intel has drawn recognition 

to Arizona from its work in education, housing, the 

job market and even politics. 

Earlier this year, President Obama visited the Intel 

Chandler campus to commend the company for 

working hard to keep jobs in the United States. 

He focused on its innovation and the power of 

education on a community. 

Intel’s presence in the market has drawn some of 

the best and brightest engineers to Chandler from all 

around, which Ellen says has benefited the housing 

market in the area. 

“They help sustain the local businesses and they are 

able to stay in their homes. Or they are doing what we 

call a ‘move up,’ where they sell their home as a 

traditional sale to buy a bigger one,” Ellen said. 

“Every time two homes are sold a job is created 

because the home owner goes out and buys all kinds 

of household items, and hires landscapers or 

contractors to make improvements to the home.” 

Ellen said that Intel employees are also low risk 

because they tend to stay in the community for a long 

time and have a ususally secure job, which means 

they’ll be able to pay off their mortgages. She also 

said that homes in the Ocotillo and Chandler areas 

tend to hold their value longer than others. 

In just the last month a Reuters report said that the 

Phoenix metro area is in the top 10 for the biggest 

gain in average credit scores for a city. 

In just the last year the average credit score in the 

Phoenix area has risen four points, a testament to the 

kind of people companies like Intel are drawing to the 

area. 

“We are definitely viewed as being an innovative 

high tech job-creating city, both regionally and 

nationally, with a great vision for continuing to be 

progressive in this way,” Ellen said. 

“We are proactive with a successful Economic 

Development Department and plans, including the 

Price corridor.” 

While about half of the positions the company will 

be hiring for over the next 18 months will be filled by 

individuals with advanced engineering degrees, other 

positions will be open to candidates with technical 

degrees and relevant experience. 

The company will also look to bring in military 

veterans who have technical training. 

Construction is scheduled to be completed by the 

second half of 2013. 

The expansion will continue to build Intel’s 

leadership role in technological development while in 

return solidifying our area as one of the most 

technologically innovative communities in the 

country.

Seatbelt campaign draws to a close 

Police wrapped up their weeklong 

child seat/seatbelt enforcement 

mobilization Sept. 22, during which 

drivers saw stepped-up patrols 

designed to minimize the number of 

child injuries and deaths in Tempe. 

Tempe police are working with the 

Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to 

help reduce the risk of death in 

passenger cars by 71 percent for 

infants and 54 percent for toddlers ages 

1 to 4 years. 

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading 

cause of death for children age 1 to 14, 

according to statistics provided by 

Molly Enright, public information 

officer for Tempe PD. 

In the United States during 2009, 

Enright said, 1,314 children ages 14 

years and younger died as occupants in 

motor vehicle crashes, and 

approximately 179,000 were injured 

based on figures compiled by the 

National Highway Traffic Safety 

Administration. 

Proper use of child restraints and 

regular seat belt use is the most 

effective way to protect people and 

reduce fatalities in motor vehicle 

crashes, Enright said statistics show. 

As of August, children in Arizona 

under the age of 5 must be properly 

restrained in a car seat and children 

ages 5 to 8 who are less than 4 feet 9 

inches tall must be in a proper child 

restraint system. 

Sureño rated as ‘High Performing’ 

Kyrene del Sureño School has been 

identified by the Arizona Department 

of Education as a recipient of the Title 1 

“High Performing Reward” 

designation. 

Criteria for the recognition require 

schools to meet annual measurable 

objectives, including earning an “A” 

letter grade; scoring average 

achievement and growth statistics 

among their Bottom Quartile students; 

and having a current-year graduation 

rate greater than 80 percent. 

Officials say the recognition helps 

demonstrate that students are receiving 

the skills needed to prepare them for 

college and careers, and for the choices 

and challenges they will encounter 

beyond high school. 

Tempe High event trains 150 for CCR 

Nearly 150 Tempe students now have 

the skills to recognize an emergency 

and save a life as a result of the handsonly 

training they received in 

cardio-cerebral resuscitation, or CCR. 

During a session at Tempe High 

School, students were able to receive 

guidance from representatives of 

Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital, the Tempe 

Fire Department and the Tempe Union 

High School District. 

“This exercise will greatly expand the 

number of people who have the skills 

needed to save lives from sudden 

cardiac arrest,” said Mitch Bycura, 

deputy chief of medical services for 

Tempe Fire. “Having the skills 

necessary to start CCR before 

paramedics arrive is critical.” 

In addition to the Sept. 21 training, 

coaches, security staff and TUHSD 

educators received CCR training in 

August. In October, district officials 

plan to expand the program to the 

remaining six schools within the 

district. 

Dr. Greg Wyman, associate 

superintendent, said the program has 

brought valuable training to many who 

otherwise might not receive it. 

“We are fortunate to have this 

partnership with the city of Tempe and 

Tempe St. Luke’s that will provide our 

students and staff with these lifesaving 

skills.” 

According to a district spokeswoman, 

sudden cardiac arrest can strike 

anyone, anywhere, and when it does, 

anyone, anywhere, and when it does, 

the victims’ survival depends on the 

people around them. Training more 

people to perform CCR increases 

survival rates by enabling more 

possible bystanders to handle an 

emergency, she said. 

Experts say that between 250,000 to 

300,000 people in the U.S. die every 

year from sudden cardiac arrest. Unlike 

heart attacks, people who suffer sudden 

cardiac arrest may have little or no 

warning, and the disorder usually 

causes nearly instantaneous death. 

The Tempe Fire Department offers a 

four-hour CPR and first aid classes. 

Both prepare people for an emergency 

by developing skills to be able to give 

immediate care for injured or suddenly 

ill people.

minutes of care until medical professionals

Tempe Tardeada celebrates Hispanic heritage

Annual Tempe Tardeada 

from noon to 8 p.m. on

A tardeada is a vibrant afternoon 

festival and social dance featuring

crafts for children, community 

booths and a tortilla-making 

demonstration. In conjunction 

with National Hispanic Heritage 

Month, the goal of the festival is to 

celebrate and experience the legacy 

of Tempe’s Hispanic culture.

and Mariachi Corazon Latino.

dancers, Folklor y Cultura 

Mexicana, and the Roping

participate in Zero Waste Day on

7-year-old’s Zoowalk design to aid autism research 

Turtle reminds boy of his own predicament 

Asmall celebration represented a big 

milestone for Colby Snead and his 

sister Brandy Williams, who 

collaborated on the design for this year’s 

winning T-shirt entry in the Zoowalk for 

autism research. 

Colby, 7, and Brandy, an advertising 

representative for Wrangler News, have been 

sharing parts of their everyday lives, with 

Brandy serving as Colby’s parttime caretaker 

when her parents aren’t home. 

Zoowalk planners hold the design 

competition every year, and Colby says he 

chose turtles for his entry “because they’re my 

favorite animal to draw.” 

That preference, he points out, relates to 

when turtles become temporarily stuck on 

their back, which represents what he feels 

“because he knows he’s different.” 

Colby’s design will be featured on several 

thousand shirts available at the Saturday, 

Oct. 6 Zoowalk, with proceeds targeting 

autism research. 

The event, now in its 8 th annual run, is 

sponsored by ASU’s Autism/Asperger’s 

Research Program and the Phoenix Zoo.

About 400 students are currently enrolled in the 

school, Lescher said, with a goal of 500 next year and 

600 after two years. About 75 percent of the students 

who had attended Sureño now attend Kyrene 

Traditional Academy, while others, like Caitlyn, 

attend as part of the district’s open-enrollment policy. 

As part of the Spalding reading and Saxon math 

programs, Lescher said the classrooms are set up in 

traditional rows during the morning hours when the 

students are working on these subjects. 

“Both of these…require that the children are in 

rows, all facing forward so they can look right at their 

teachers,” Lescher said, adding that in the afternoon 

the desks can be turned around into small groups for 

science and other subjects. 

Starting at kindergarten, Lescher said, students 

begin exploring classic literature. Rather than simply 

reading the stories, she said, they discuss why 

characters say or do different things, and are 

encouraged to make predictions about what will 

happen further into the story. 

“They have to read it, understand it, and then prove 

what they are saying,” she said. “This is such a rich 

experience in literature to give to all of our students.” 

As for uniforms, which are part of the school’s 

requirements, Lescher said she was pleasantly 

surprised at how well the students have adapted. 

“Since the second day of school, we have had 100 

percent compliance with the uniforms,” she said. 

Lescher, who was principal at Kyrene de la 

Mariposa for 12 years prior to coming to Traditional 


Academy, said the focus on structure and more 

rigorous academics is already making a tangible and 

positive difference among the students. 

“Behavior has improved considerably, in part 

because we have very clear expectations for our 

students,” she said. 

“Everyone knows how to act in the hallways and at 

lunch. Having more structure lets us do our jobs to 

teach the students, because there are fewer 

distractions and it’s a calmer place to be.” 

The school’s recent “High Performing Award” from 

the Arizona Department of Education is also 

indicative of its success, Lescher said. 

“We received it because of our above average 

performance as a Title 1 school and our school’s ‘A’ 

grade.” Dustin Johnson, whose daughters Sarah and 

Rachel are in kindergarten and second grade 

respectively, said he is glad his children are attending 

Kyrene Traditional Academy. Rachel had gone to 

Sureño for two years and the family was hoping to 

stay at their neighborhood school. 

“We are happy with it,” he said, adding that the 

more rigorous curriculum does mean there is more 

homework at night for both girls, but that so far it has 

been very manageable. 

“The teachers are all doing a great job.” 

Clark is also happy with her decision to send 

Caitlyn to Kyrene Traditional Academy. 

“She told me, ‘I am all charged up to learn this 

year,’ and she is progressively getting better. Her self 

confidence is up, and I am not getting any reports this 

year about talking too much in class.”
