Club Officer, Committee Member,<br />
or Teen Leader<br />
Take on a leadership role within the club such<br />
as president, vice president, treasurer,<br />
secretary, or head <strong>of</strong> a committee within the<br />
club.<br />
<strong>County</strong> 4-H Public Presentations<br />
4-H members learn how to clearly express<br />
themselves, organize ideas and present them<br />
in a logical order. Through public<br />
presentations, participants develop<br />
confidence, poise, self esteem, stage<br />
presence, and knowledge Held late winter/<br />
early spring.<br />
TOPS Camp Counselor and Counselor in<br />
Training<br />
Individuals who have completed 8 th grade may<br />
qualify to become Counselors in Training<br />
(CIT). Individuals who are 16 years <strong>of</strong> age<br />
and older can apply to be a Camp Counselor<br />
for the week. Counselors with the help <strong>of</strong><br />
CIT’s will lead their own group <strong>of</strong> campers<br />
and foster a positive camp environment. Camp<br />
is last week in June.<br />
Herdsman at the Fair<br />
Teens 8 th grade and older can spend the<br />
night at the Fair helping clean up and<br />
watching over the various projects.<br />
Outstanding 4-H’er<br />
Juniors, Seniors and 13th grade members can<br />
apply to be an Outstanding 4-H’er. Complete<br />
the application and ask one 4-H adult<br />
volunteer to write a recommendation letter<br />
for you. To be considered an Outstanding<br />
4-H'er, a 4-H member should be truly<br />
deserving <strong>of</strong> the award by excelling in the<br />
following areas.<br />

State 4-H <strong>Leadership</strong> <strong>Opportunities</strong><br />
State 4-H Public Presentations and State<br />
4-H Equine Presentations<br />
State 4-H Public Presentations provide an<br />
opportunity for 4-H members to compete on<br />
the state level with 4-H members from<br />
around New Jersey at Rutgers University<br />
each June. Participants must be a 4-H<br />
member enrolled in 8-13th grade and receive<br />
an excellent rating on their presentation at<br />
the county level.<br />
North Jersey Teen Conference<br />
Held in March, the North Jersey 4-H Teen<br />
Conference is a leadership weekend planned<br />
by teens for teens. Teens attend workshops<br />
and participate in a community service<br />
activity while meeting 4-H teens from the<br />
Northern part <strong>of</strong> the state. After a year <strong>of</strong><br />
attending the conference, teens can become<br />
part <strong>of</strong> the planning committee.<br />

New Jersey State 4-H Teen Action Council<br />
The New Jersey State 4-H Teen Action<br />
Council (STAC) is an opportunity for 4-H<br />
members in grades 8-13 to serve at the state<br />
level, providing advice and input to the State<br />
4-H Youth Development Program.<br />
Collegiate 4-H Member<br />
The Collegiate 4-H Club encourages student<br />
participation in 4-H activities—primarily<br />
community service--while at Rutgers, The<br />
State University <strong>of</strong> New Jersey. Students<br />
promote the 4-H program to outside groups,<br />
the general public, and the Rutgers<br />
community. They maintain communication with<br />
youth, leaders, and agents in New Jersey and<br />
<strong>of</strong>fer assistance to the program whenever<br />
possible.<br />
New Jersey State 4-H Camp Counselor in<br />
Training and Camp Volunteer<br />
Individuals who have completed 9 th grade may<br />
qualify to become Counselors in Training<br />
(CIT), which is geared towards preparing<br />
young adults for the rigors <strong>of</strong> the camp<br />
counselor position through leadership and<br />
personal development experiences.<br />
Individuals who have completed 11th grade<br />
and are at least 16 years <strong>of</strong> age and older can<br />
apply to be a Camp Volunteer for a week.<br />
After volunteer training, individuals are<br />
assigned to assist camp staff in a cabin and a<br />
course area.<br />

Description <strong>of</strong> National 4-H <strong>Leadership</strong> <strong>Opportunities</strong><br />
National 4-H Conference<br />
Held each spring in Chevy Chase, MD at the<br />
National 4-H Center, provides an opportunity<br />
for 4-H members to become acquainted with<br />
government, meet with federal<br />
representatives, enhance leadership skills<br />
and provide feedback on the 4-H Youth<br />
Development Program. Potential delegates<br />
must be in the 10-12 grade at the time <strong>of</strong> the<br />
application. Youth are chosen to be part <strong>of</strong><br />
their state’s delegation through an<br />
application and interview process.<br />
Applications are due in October, the trip is in<br />
April.<br />
Citizenship Washington Focus<br />
CWF is a 4-H leadership program for teens<br />
from across America at the National 4-H<br />
Youth Conference Center near Washington,<br />
D.C. each summer. This week-long program<br />
enriches young people’s lives through<br />
activities that broaden their appreciation and<br />
respect for themselves and others, including<br />
leadership, citizenship and an understanding<br />
<strong>of</strong> the political process. Participants may only<br />
attend this event one time during their 4-H<br />
career. All interested 4-H members must be<br />
in grade 9-12 at the time <strong>of</strong> application and<br />
must go through a local selection process.<br />
Applications are due in March, the trip is in<br />
July.
National 4-H Congress<br />
Held in Atlanta, GA each November, provides<br />
an opportunity for 4-H members from the<br />
across the nation to come together and learn<br />
about community involvement, cultural<br />
diversity, and service to others while<br />
meeting new friends.<br />
Participants can only attend this event one<br />
time during their 4-H career. Youth are<br />
chosen to be part <strong>of</strong> their state’s delegation<br />
through an application and interview process.<br />
Applications are due in March/April, the trip<br />
is in late November after Thanksgiving.<br />

<strong>Somerset</strong> <strong>County</strong> 4-H Scholarships and Recognitions<br />
4-H Association Scholarship<br />
The 4-H Association <strong>of</strong>fers $1000.00<br />
scholarships to 4-H'ers for college, vo-tech,<br />
etc. To apply, students must be a high school<br />
senior or a college freshman. They need to be<br />
a <strong>Somerset</strong> <strong>County</strong> 4-H member in good<br />
standing and they must have a letter <strong>of</strong><br />
recommendation from a 4-H Club Leader.<br />
Applications due April 1<br />
4-H Trainmasters Club Scholarship<br />
This fund was established by the 4-H<br />
Trainmasters Club and the recipient will<br />
receive a grant <strong>of</strong> $1000 provided that they<br />
have been accepted for a regular course <strong>of</strong><br />
study at a college or technical school with an<br />
interest in science careers. Applications due<br />
April 1<br />
4-H Prep Scholarship<br />
4-H Prep is <strong>of</strong>fering a $500.00 scholarship to<br />
a 4-H'er who started out in our Prep Program.<br />
To apply, students must be a high school<br />
senior or a college freshman. They need to be<br />
a <strong>Somerset</strong> <strong>County</strong> 4-H member in good<br />
standing, have contributed to the 4-H Prep<br />
program and demonstrated mentoring<br />
relationships within 4-H. They must have a<br />
letter <strong>of</strong> recommendation from a 4-H Club<br />
Leader. Applications due April 1<br />
Rob Fellows Memorial Scholarship<br />
This fund was established by the Fellows<br />
family and the recipient will receive a grant<br />
<strong>of</strong> $1000 provided that they have been<br />
accepted for a regular course <strong>of</strong> study at a<br />
college or technical school with an interest in<br />
science careers. Applications due April 1<br />
Joseph J. & Florence E. Klimas Scholarship<br />
The Joseph J. & Florence E. Klimas<br />
Scholarship is awarded annually to a<br />
<strong>Somerset</strong> <strong>County</strong> 4-H Alum, entering his/her<br />
junior or senior year in college, having<br />
declared a major in education. Letters <strong>of</strong><br />
recommendation from a 4-H adult volunteer<br />
and a pr<strong>of</strong>essor are also necessary.<br />

4-H Balliet Scholarship<br />
Scholarship recipients will receive a one-time<br />
grant <strong>of</strong> $500.00 provided that they have<br />
been accepted for a regular course <strong>of</strong> study<br />
or are currently a student attending a twoyear<br />
college, technical, business or vocational<br />
school. <strong>Somerset</strong> <strong>County</strong> 4-H Members in<br />
12th and 13th grades are eligible.<br />

The Edward Rosania, William Staats, Peter<br />
Smith Memorial Scholarship<br />
A one time grant for the encouragement and<br />
promotion <strong>of</strong> agriculture endeavors.<br />
Applicants must be a member in good<br />
standing in a <strong>Somerset</strong> <strong>County</strong> 4-H Club,<br />
demonstrate community involvement and<br />
personal growth and must have a letter <strong>of</strong><br />
recommendation from an adult currently<br />
active in the <strong>Somerset</strong> <strong>County</strong> 4-H Program<br />
or the <strong>Somerset</strong> <strong>County</strong> Board <strong>of</strong><br />
Agriculture. Applications due<br />
July 15<br />
The Tom Everett Memorial Scholarship<br />
$2000 Academic Scholarship: This<br />
applicant must be enrolled as a sophomore<br />
or older at an accredited college or<br />
university. He/she must also be a NJ<br />
resident majoring in an agricultural subject<br />
area and must intend to pursue a career in<br />
production agriculture or related field. The<br />
applicant's parent must be a current<br />
member <strong>of</strong> the NJ Farm Bureau.<br />
$500 Continuing Education Scholarship:<br />
This applicant or parent, if under 21, must<br />
be a current member <strong>of</strong> the NJ Farm<br />
Bureau and will be attending an accredited<br />
or approved seminar, workshop or<br />
conference related directly to product<br />
agriculture or related field.<br />
