MAIN COMPONENTS AND FEATURES OF UNRWA'S PERI-NATAL CARE SERVICE<br />
− A strategic approach based on <strong>the</strong> integration <strong>of</strong> services comprising: preconception, pre-natal, intra-natal and post-natal care;<br />
− A proactive system <strong>of</strong> risk assessment, surveillance and management;<br />
− A well-developed Management <strong>Health</strong> Information system with continuous improvement in data collection, data analysis and<br />
management to decentralize decision making, enhance system performance and improve <strong>the</strong> outcomes <strong>of</strong> care;<br />
− Decentralized management at different levels including at health centre, area level and at Field level, guided with <strong>the</strong> indicators<br />
generated from <strong>the</strong> health information system to improve monitoring and response in a timely manner at <strong>the</strong> service delivery level;<br />
− Significant investment in staff development and capacity building using formal, in-service and on-<strong>the</strong>-job training;<br />
− Conduction <strong>of</strong> health services research in particular operational research; and<br />
− Strong partnership and collaboration with o<strong>the</strong>r programs within UNRWA, public health authorities <strong>of</strong> host countries, WHO and<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r UN sister organizations, NGO’s and <strong>the</strong> community.<br />
As shown in Table 5, during <strong>2010</strong> a total <strong>of</strong> 2,027 staff training days were conducted for staff in various categories. This heavy<br />
investment in training was to acquaint health staff with <strong>the</strong> new Technical Instructions on Maternal and Child care.<br />
