INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS SCHOOL
THE WORLD IS YOUR
PLAYING FIELD
Is this your dream? If you are willing to give your all, if you
speak perfect English, if you have the flexibility to adapt to
whatever environment you are working in, if you are open to
different cultures and if you are as good with people as you
are with numbers, then the International Business School (IBS)
can help you realise your dream with one of our four-year
degree programmes.
INTERNATIONAL WITH A CAPITAL I
The International Business School of the Amsterdam
University of Applied Sciences (AUAS/HvA) is International
with a capital I. All of the lessons, course materials and books
are in English. And continuous assessment of international
events means that courses are geared to the latest
developments in business.
Your fellow students hail from all four corners of the globe, as
do the lecturers. For example, we have renowned lecturers
from the UK, China, the US, Germany, Ireland, the Czech
Republic and Bulgaria. These professionals are keen to share
their experiences of the fast-paced world of business.
IN THE HEART OF AMSTERDAM
Your centre of operations will be Amsterdam, the capital of
the Netherlands. It’s a compact metropolis where a multitude
of leading international businesses have established their head
offices. It’s a creative and innovative hot spot, a fertile
breeding ground for start-up businesses and an incubator for
new ideas. It’s also a historic city with a long academic
tradition, and a city that is open to different cultures and
nationalities. You will feel at home in no time.
BECOME A GLOBAL PROFESSIONAL
What is it like to work with students from America? Or to
negotiate with trade managers from China? Or to give a
presentation to a delegation from Sweden? You will soon
experience this for yourself. The programme devotes a huge
amount of time to cross-cultural communication and your
personal development. Within IBS, everything is oriented
towards shaping you into a successful international business
professional. After all, if you want to survive in the international
business world, you have to be able to stand your ground.
You must be willing and able to work hard, overcome setbacks
and adapt to any situation at any time and in any place.
CHALLENGING, REAL-LIFE
BUSINESS SCENARIOS
In the first year, you will be thrust into the market straight
away, putting your knowledge into practice. In order to
uncover all of the secrets that the market has in store, you will
be guided through an organisation’s entire business cycle and
set up your own business together with your fellow students.
You will do this as part of the Young Enterprise Project, under
the supervision of a mentor and an advisor from the business
sector. You will devise products, seek shareholders, create a
business plan and launch yourself into the market!
Business School takes an important strategic position in our EMEA finance organisation.
You have completed a six-month exchange programme in Mexico City, received on-the-job
training at a manufacturing company in Shanghai and completed your final thesis at
an Italian yacht building firm. You have specialised your knowledge within a particular
sector, set up your own business and worked with people from all four corners of the
globe. You have learned to overcome cultural differences and how to get things done.
Although you are just starting your career, you already have a wealth of international
contacts, knowledge and experience. You are ready to start an international career or to
continue to complete a Master’s degree in Business Science. Over four years, you have
achieved the goal that you had set yourself: to complete the International Business
Studies programme and to gain your Bachelor of Business Administration.
At our European headquarters in Hoofddorp, we offer 6 internship placements every semester.
Students who complete their internship at IDEXX will experience being a fully active part of our
our financial transaction and reporting processes for EMEA. We also involve students in process
system SAP, integration of activities into our Shared Service centre and much more. In some cases
these projects are suitable for writing a thesis and IDEXX is proud of the several IBS students who
have graduated after doing their graduation project with us.
The study programme within IBS is a solid match with the knowledge and skills profile needed in
the financial roles our dynamic, international environment demands. As IBS students are perfectly
prepared for such roles, we are pleased to have recruited a number of students after graduation.
NO RESEARCH, NO RESULTS
Applied research is crucial for making good decisions,
developing innovative products, conducting successful market
launches and achieving successful sales figures. In the complex
and competitive world of international business, research is
vital. It is therefore also vital to your studies. You will learn to
assess the value of research results and you will develop the
skills required to carry out thorough research. You will be
taught these skills from day one, with as much practical
experience as possible, working for real-world businesses.
For the purposes of research, the International Business School
works in close conjunction with both the Centre for Applied
Research on Economics & Management (CAREM) at AUAS/HvA
and the business world. Thanks to this close collaboration, we
are able to implement the latest insights from the professional
world into the programme. Researchers at CAREM share their
research results with you via guest lectures, and in the Research
Café, you can talk to researchers, lecturers, fellow students and
professionals from the business sector about the impact that
these results will have on everyday professional practice.
AND MANAGEMENT STUDIES
You are responsible for a foreign branch of an international organisation, with a
different work ethic, culture and language. You are an entrepreneur about to set up
your own business in a market that is governed by completely different legislation than
what you are used to. Or you have been commissioned to introduce a new product to
a market in which the media landscape, consumer behaviour and your competitors are
Steffen Vollert, International Business and Management Studies specialising in Financial
Management.
In selecting my prospective university, three criteria were on my checklist: a project and an
application-oriented learning environment; a personal and international atmosphere; and a
vibrant city.
After attending a day of open doors and several taster lessons, it was obvious that the International
Business School matched my requirements exactly. I had found my new home! Small classes as
well as project work with students from all over the world make every project an exciting
cross-cultural experience. Alongside this, it was possible to learn Spanish as a second language,
which is ideal having a Columbian flat mate! The freedom and support given by lecturers to
develop myself alongside the possibilities given to actively take responsibility for my own
education are undoubtedly the points I enjoy most.
After my Bachelors programme, I intend to further my international experience and specialise on a
Masters programme.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS SCHOOL
TRADE MANAGEMENT ASIA
Doing business in Asia is a completely different experience to the Netherlands. Culture,
beliefs, language, politics, legislation, economic growth, climate, food: everything is
different. For some people, the prospect of doing business in a foreign land is enough
to induce a cold sweat. However, if you are the sort of person who relishes challenges
like these, then Trade Management Asia may be the right programme for you. The Asian
market is developing at breakneck speed. At this moment there is a demand for skilled
managers in countries such as China and Japan, who feel at home within the host culture
and understand how to do business in a region that is so dynamically different. Trade
Management Asia gives you the tools you need to become this kind of manager.
Laurens van Gelder
On graduating from TMA, you will have a specialism in an area which can offer you huge
opportunities in all kinds of industries! If I take myself as an example: while writing my thesis and
finishing the final semester on the TMA programme, I received a job offer from a Dutch
shipbuilding company to open a representative office in China to manage their shipbuilding
projects in the Jiangsu region. I accepted, finalised my TMA studies, packed my stuff and traveled
to China to start my small career in the shipbuilding industry.
Now, 4 years later, I am the General Manager at Damen Trading Suzhou, a subsidiary of Damen
Shipyards. In my opinion, there is still an enormous shortage of people who understand Asian
culture & language in combination with a commercial background - TMA gives you both.
PREPARED FOR THE WORLD OF
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS
Trade Management Asia is a full-time programme with a
practically oriented approach. You will spend a semester
studying at an Asian university and also complete a six-month
work placement in the Far East. This means that you can gain
practical experience at the heart of the current market.
Exciting import and export projects play an important role.
During the programme, you will acquire knowledge of Asian
languages and cultures. Upon graduation, you will be
equipped to take up a wide range of fascinating functions in
commerce or, of course, to start your own business.
In addition to the knowledge you acquire, you will also hone
your personal skills as part of exciting projects.
In the fourth semester, your courses will go into more detail
TUITION FEES
The 2012-2013 tuition fee for the full-time programme is
€1,771. This applies to students who are nationals of an EEA
(European Economic Area) member state or of Swiss or
Surinamese nationality. The tuition fee for non-EEA students is
€ 7,375. The fees for 2013-2014 have yet to be determined.
In addition to paying tuition fees, you will also need to
purchase books, readers and other required items. For the first
year, these costs are estimated at € 550.
Students who have already completed an hbo/Bachelor-level
programme are obliged to pay higher (non-subsidised) tuition
fees. More information can be found at
www.international.hva.nl/study/tuition-fees.
SCHOLARSHIP AND GRANTS
The International Business School offers the Amsterdam
Talents Scholarships (ATS) to outstanding non-EEA students.
This scholarship programme is performance-based and will be
awarded at the end of every academic year. In order to be
eligible for an ATS, a student’s study results have to meet
certain pre-specified requirements.
Detailed information can be found on
www.hva.nl/sem-scholarships.
For an overview of all scholarships offered by other organisations,
see www.studyinholland.nl or www.grantfinder.nl.
In some cases, the Dutch government offers study grants
(for example, ‘studiefinanciering’) to international students.
To find out if you are eligible for these grants, please go to
www.duo.nl.
STUDENT ENTRY VISA AND
RESIDENCE PERMIT
Students who are nationals of one of the EEA member states
or Switzerland can enter and live in the Netherlands without a
visa or residence permit. Students from most non-EEA
countries who plan to stay for a period of longer than three
months are required to obtain a visa in order to enter the
Netherlands. This visa is called the MVV - Machtiging tot
Voorlopig Verblijf. Once you have been admitted to the
programme, our central International Office will apply for the
MVV on your behalf. On our website you can find detailed
information about the application procedure as well as the
forms you need to send. Non-EEA students will also need to
apply for a residence permit upon arrival in the Netherlands.
The International Office will assist you with the application
procedure.
For general information about immigration procedures for
international students, you can check: http://www.nuffic.nl/en.
Note: all Chinese nationals must obtain a Nuffic certificate
before the application procedure can be started. Nuffic will
issue the certificate after verification of your diplomas and
IELTS or TOEFL internet-based test.
For information on how to apply for the Nuffic certificate,
please see www.nuffic.nl/nuffic-certificate.
STUDY SELECTION INTERVIEWS
Before you embark on a new study programme, it is a good
idea to find out what is expected of you and what you can
expect from the programme. This is why the International
Business School carries out study selection interviews for all
study programmes after you have enrolled via Studielink.
After completing your registration, you will receive an e-mail
directing you to a questionnaire. If, after completing the
questionnaire, you would still like to have a study selection
interview, we can then schedule an appointment. During the
interview, we will discuss the responses you gave to the
questionnaire and look in more detail at your knowledge,
aptitude and motivation to take the programme. At this point,
we hope that you will be prepared to make the right choice.
It is important that you register on time via Studielink.
Deadlines differ per programme, please consult our website.
Early registration will ensure you have plenty of time to get all
the information about the procedures before the summer
holidays and to receive an invitation to come for an interview.
LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
As the programmes are conducted in English, we expect our
students to have good English language skills (writing and
speaking). The minimum overall score required at academic level
is 6.0, with individual marks scoring no lower than 5.5 (IELTS),
550 on the paper-based test, 80 on the internet-based test
(TOEFL), or level C1 (Cambridge Advanced). The test must have
been taken within 2 years prior to applying for our programme.
Students with a Dutch mbo level 4, havo or vwo diploma and
a score in English of less than 7 are advised to take an IELTS
test. This will determine whether their level of English is good
enough to complete an English-language programme. All
students with a foreign diploma are required to present proof
of their English proficiency, with the exception of German
Abitur and diplomas from Great Britain, Ireland, the USA,
Canada, Australia, New Zealand.
