Dr. Eileen Sullivan-Marx Named Dean of the
NYU School of Nursing
On July 1, 2012 Dr. Eileen Sullivan-Marx assumed the Deanship of the NYU
School of Nursing. A visionary leader at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Sullivan-Marx
served as the Associate Dean for Clinical Practice and Community
Affairs. At Penn, Dr. Sullivan-Marx oversaw the School of Nursing's practice and
community mission through oversight of the school’s Program of All-Inclusive
Care of the Elderly (PACE), its Living Independently For Elders (LIFE) program,
the Healthy in Philadelphia Initiative, Penn Nursing Consultation Service, the
Penn Council of Nurses, and the Center for Professional Development. Her research
and policy leadership focused on outcomes of care for frail older adults,
sustainable models of care using advanced practice nurses locally and globally,
and health policy in community-based, long-term care settings. We wish Dr.
Sullivan-Marx our sincere congratulations and best wishes in her new role.
Xi Chapter Supports the West Philadelphia Community
Wellness Day is an annual event held at the Penn Nursing LIFE (Living Independently For Elders) program
in April. Wellness Day provides the West Philadelphia Community with a day of health screening, nutritional
information, food, exercise and fun. Sigma’s Xi Chapter contributed money towards the music for the event.
The Happiness Reggae Band was a real crowd pleaser – staying the entire event, and providing a fantastic
performance. They kept the crowd moving and dancing throughout the entire day. They also provided
background music at both the Welcome Ceremony and the day’s closing event. Some Xi members volunteered
at the event, performing blood pressure screening, cholesterol testing and providing assistance as
needed to the participants. Thanks to all those members who came out to support our service project.
Tanja Kral, PhD
Dr. Tanja Kral, PhD, presented her work at the Sigma Theta Tau, Xi Chapter
Spring Colloquium. Her talk, titled “Understanding Child Eating Behaviors to
Prevent Childhood Obesity” was presented on February 22, 2012 as part of
the Spring Scholarly Program. Dr. Kral’s research focuses on the cognitive,
sensory and nutritional controls of appetite and eating in children and adults
and their relevance to obesity. In particular, her research assesses how familial
predispositions to leanness or obesity interact with environmental factors,
such as the omnipresence of palatable, energy-dense foods, to produce individual
differences in energy intake regulation. She is currently funded by the
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

STT Xi Chapter President
Hi fellow Xi Chapter members. I hope you are enjoying your summer. As promised,
we had a very busy 2011-2012 year. We engaged members in research
presentations, our first annual wine tasting event and in service projects such as
Relay for Life and Wellness Day at Penn Nursing’s LIFE program. We enhanced
our communication with our members through our Xi Chapter Google Group,
enhancing our Xi Chapter website on Sigma’s International website and on our
Penn Nursing website. We’ve had two general membership meetings, with one
of them focused on Career Opportunities in Nursing. We’re getting to meet and
interact with more of our members and we’re very excited. One of most exciting
accomplishments this year is that we launched our very own line of Xi Chapter
Sigma Wear. If you haven’t had the opportunity to see what this looks like,
please visit our Penn Nursing website and check them out! And of course our
biggest event this year was our Annual Induction Ceremony where we inducted
61 new members into our Chapter. My goal continues to be increasing the visibility
of Xi Chapter on Penn’s campus and in our member’s lives. If you have
ideas for events you’d like us to consider, please send them along and we’ll see
if we can do it. Enjoy your summer. I hope to see you this year at one of our
events!
Xi Chapter Jewelry Fundraiser
This spring, Xi Chapter held a jewelry
fundraiser during the Penn Nursing Preceptor
Recognition Event. Laura
McDonald showcased beautiful Premier
Designs Jewelry. Attendees of the
event enjoyed browsing the displays
and purchasing unique pieces of jewelry.
If you would like to help Xi Chapter
fundraise, consider hosting a jewelry
party at your home. Xi Chapter will receive
a percentage of the proceeds and
you and your friends will have a fabulous
time adding to your accessories. If
interested, please contact Laura McDonald
and tell her you’re a Xi Chapter
member.
Relay for Life
Each year Xi Chapter partners with
Student Nurses at Penn to support
Relay for Life. Relay for Life is an
American Cancer Society, volunteer-driven
fundraising event held
at colleges across the nation. This
year on Saturday, March 31 to April
1 st , Penn nursing students sold
pizza, purchased by Xi Chapter, to
hungry participants. Nursing students
and Xi Chapter members
participated in the 12 hour event
that celebrates survivors and supports
family members and provides
funds for further research.
First Annual Xi Chapter Wine Tasting - April 20, 2012
Xi Chapter held its First Annual Wine Tasting Event this April as a fundraiser to support the Research
Grants we provide to our members. About 40 people, including Dean Afaf Meleis, attended this fun and
tasty event. Earle Drake from Laird Wine Distributors walked us through the wine tasting, suggesting food
pairings and taught us about wines from Italy, France and Chile. Who knew that learning could be so
much fun? We’d like to acknowledge Long Term Care Placement Professionals for providing the wine for
this event. We look forward to this event next spring and hope you can come and enjoy the fun!
