The <strong>Korean</strong> <strong>War</strong> <strong>Veterans</strong> Gathering and their families will be at the Sheraton National<br />
Hotel located at Columbia Pike in Arlington, VA. This will be our 11th year to be in Arlington,<br />
VA, our 5th <strong>Korean</strong> <strong>War</strong> <strong>Veterans</strong> Armistace Day Memorial Ceremony, and the 15th year for<br />
the Wreath Laying Ceremony.<br />
<strong>Korean</strong> <strong>War</strong> <strong>Veterans</strong> across our nation are encouraged and invited to attend this special<br />
tribute to our Fallen Comrades and to those who served our great nation with dignity and with<br />
honor.<br />
To obtain information about the KWV Gathering and activities at the Sheraton National Ho<br />
tel 24-28 July 1999, and to be added to the mailing list, contact Jack E. Cloman, Chairman,<br />

Your name will be added to the mailing list. Hotel reservations will be made only by reservation<br />

These issues are limited so get your order in early. $1 per copy plus $3.20 postage Make your<br />
check to KWVA National and state in message or note on check “For Back Issues.” I suggest<br />
minimum orders of 7 issues including the most current. Mix your issues as you want. Orders<br />
of 50 of the above issues (except current) for gaining new members or just passing out at veteran<br />
hospitials can be obtained at an reduced rate of $25 including postage. Send your orders<br />

The Graybeards<br />
The Graybeards is the official newsletter of the <strong>Korean</strong> <strong>War</strong> <strong>Veterans</strong> <strong>Association</strong> Inc. It<br />
is scheduled to be published six times per year. Views expressed in the newsletter do not<br />
necessarily reflect the position of the KWVA Executive Board nor does the KWVA Inc.<br />
assume any responsibility for errors of omission or commission. All articles, reports, and<br />
items except those clearly marked Official KWVA Notices and/or Announcements may<br />
be edited to conform to space, clarity, and format specifications without permission of<br />
the authors. Expressions of opinion as in editorials and letters to the editor if printed, may<br />
be edited only with the writer’s consent. Material used with permission from other<br />

Book Review<br />
You Can Call Me Irish<br />
by Dick Burke<br />
Dick Burke, of Westminster Maryland,<br />
<strong>Korean</strong> <strong>War</strong> Veteran who served from 1951<br />
to 1955 in the Navy, has written a book (his<br />
first) called ‘You Can Call Me Irish’. It is<br />
part history/part genealogy, starting with<br />
his Irish ancestors and continuing forward<br />
in time to include accounts of family members<br />
in wars from the Civil <strong>War</strong> through<br />
Vietnam.<br />
Dick features four relatives who were<br />
killed in action:<br />
Lieutenant Charles Pfanne, Army Air C<br />
orps, a B-24 navigator Lost over Ploesti in<br />
1944; Fireman First Class Harold O’Neil,<br />
whose ship LST 448 was sunk in<br />
Solomon’s Islands action in 1943, Corporal<br />
Floyd McDonald, killed in action August<br />
1950 while serving with the 2nd Infantry<br />
Division, 23rd Infantry Regiment in Korea;<br />
and Lance Corporal Gregory Harris, a<br />
Marine who was lost in 1966 along with<br />
two other American advisers attached to<br />
the 5th Battalion, Vietnamese Marine<br />
Corps.<br />
Dick contacted Vincent Krepps while<br />
writing the book, and acknowledgment of<br />
Vince’s contributions on the <strong>Korean</strong> <strong>War</strong><br />
portions appears in the book.<br />

Unforgotten – Dedication of the<br />
Memorial<br />

Unforgotten. The author is a law professor<br />
emeritus at the University of Virginia and is<br />
a member of KWVA. The leading character<br />
in this work of fiction is John Winston, who<br />
served as an infantry platoon leader in<br />
Korea in 1950-51. This extract is published<br />
with the permission of the author and the<br />
