Retired Gen. William<br />
Westmoreland, who was best<br />
known for his role as commander<br />
of U.S. forces dur<strong>in</strong>g the Vietnam<br />
<strong>War</strong> from 1964 to 1968, died of<br />
natural causes on July 18, <strong>2005</strong>.<br />
He was 91.<br />
Westmoreland was promoted to<br />
Brigadier general dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
<strong>Korean</strong> <strong>War</strong>, dur<strong>in</strong>g which he was<br />
the commander of the 187th<br />
Airborne RCT. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
KWVA Director <strong>War</strong>ren Wiedhahn,<br />
“Generals Ray Davis, Dick<br />
Stilwell and ‘Westy’<br />
Westmoreland were three of the<br />
‘movers and shakers’ beh<strong>in</strong>d the<br />
‘Remember the <strong>Korean</strong> <strong>War</strong>’<br />
movement.<br />
“We can’t let them down, no<br />
matter what. We owe it to them,<br />
and the millions of other <strong>Korean</strong><br />
<strong>War</strong> Veterans, to cont<strong>in</strong>ue the<br />
fight for adequate remembrance<br />
and recognition!” he observed.<br />
