NANIKEN RIVER FLOOD FORUM<br />

Your local <strong>Labour</strong> team has been working hard over recent months to find a long term solution to the flooding<br />

problems caused by the Naniken River in Ardmore-Montrose and Maryfield Crescent. <strong>The</strong>re have been discussions<br />

with Dublin City Council and the Office of Public Works over the last few months which are now intensifying.<br />

After a public consultation meeting with residents on the 7th of May, a sample representative group has been<br />

formed who are determined to work with us to find an amenable solution to this on-going problem.<br />

<strong>The</strong> City Council have also committed to establish their own ‘Flood Forum’ for the Naniken area which we will<br />

engage with but we are determined to ensure that the OPW and Dublin City Council live up to their<br />

responsibilities to the residents.<br />

<strong>The</strong> latest development since that meeting has been the tabling of a motion by Cllr Paddy Bourke at the special<br />

May meeting of Dublin City Council demanding that the City Council undertake a hydraulic analysis of the Naniken<br />

River. <strong>The</strong> motion was passed unanimously:<br />

That the City Council provides a sum of €50,000 in the 2012 Estimates to commission a Hydraulic Survey of the Naniken River, to determine what works<br />

are needed to prevent flooding in the catchment area. A number of houses have been refused insurance cover as a result of this river flooding.<br />

ARTANE - BEAUMONT FC SITE<br />

<strong>The</strong> derelict tennis courts in Rockfield Park<br />

have been an eye-sore for many years. I<br />

am now working closely with local<br />

residents, Artane-Beaumont FC and<br />

Dublin City Council with a view to<br />

developing that site into a<br />

community facility that would be<br />

of sustainable benefit to the local<br />

area.<br />

Artane-Beaumont FC provides a<br />

fantastic service to the local<br />

community and we have begun a<br />

process with Dublin City Council to<br />

investigate ways in which the existing facility<br />

could be upgraded.<br />

BEAUMONT WOODS PLANNING<br />

APPLICATION<br />

As residents of Beaumont Woods will be aware, Cllr Andrew Montague, Cllr<br />

Paddy Bourke and myself were very active in tackling a recent application<br />

to realign a ring road which would have adversely affected the Beaumont<br />

Woods estate.<br />

After a number of public meetings were organised, I and my colleagues<br />

lodged objections and I was glad to see the City Council request more<br />

information from the Developer before making a decision. <strong>The</strong> developer<br />

has until mid-October to respond to the Council’s request and after that,<br />

the City Council has one month to make a decision. I will be monitoring<br />

the situation closely and I hope the hospital will withdraw its plans and<br />

listen to the concerns of the residents.<br />

BEAUMONT HOSPITAL FORUM<br />

A number of controversial developments relating to Beaumont Hospital<br />

have caused concern for neighbouring residents:<br />

■ <strong>The</strong> disgraceful construction of an elevated roadway to the rear of<br />

Ardmore Drive<br />

■ <strong>The</strong> proposed ring-road affecting Beaumont Woods<br />

■ <strong>The</strong> on-going parking problems associated with the hospital for residents<br />

in Kilmore West<br />

I believe it is time that the hospital starts to work with residents instead of<br />

against them, which is why I am working to establish a ‘Beaumont Hospital<br />

Forum’ where residents, Gardaí, Dublin City Council public representatives<br />

and senior hospital officials could meet on a regular basis to work on<br />

matters of local concern.<br />

I believe that this would help avoid confusion and difficulties which have<br />

developed from the hospital’s poor communication strategy as of late. If<br />

‘CONVENTION IN YOUR<br />

CLASSROOM’ PROJECT<br />

IN LOCAL SCHOOLS<br />

I was delighted to bring my ‘Convention<br />

in Your Classroom’ project to local<br />

secondary schools over the last number<br />

of months. Based on the Constitutional<br />

Convention which is discussing possible<br />

amendments to the Constitution, my<br />

project gave transition year students<br />

the chance to air their views, and to<br />

visit the Dáil to discuss the issues<br />

with politicians from all political<br />

parties. Twelve Northside secondary<br />

schools took part in the project and<br />

the young people in all schools were<br />

very impressive.<br />

MARINO TEACHER ACCESS<br />

PROGRAMME<br />

I have developed a programme with Northside Partnership and Marino<br />

Institute of Education to proactively encourage students from Northside<br />

disadvantaged schools into the primary teaching profession. Over 20<br />

students from 9 DEIS secondary schools been taking part in the course<br />

which will focus on improving their Irish standards as Higher Level Irish is<br />

a requirement for entry into Primary School Teacher Training. I am<br />

delighted to be in a position to assist these students in achieving their<br />

ambitions.<br />

ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR FORUM<br />

When issues of anti-social behaviour arise in a community, it is important to<br />

work constructively to find positive solutions, without drawing unnecessary<br />

negative attention to a particular estate or area.<br />

I have been working closely with a number of residents associations and<br />

Community Gardaí in Clontarf Garda station to try to resolve a recurring<br />

problem of anti-social behaviour which is of particular concern to a number<br />

of residents. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have any<br />

policing or anti-social behaviour concerns.<br />

SANTRY KILMORE WHITEHALL<br />

EDUCATE TOGETHER SCHOOL<br />

Parents in the Santry Whitehall, Kilmore and<br />

Beaumont areas were surveyed in November of<br />

2012 to ascertain their views on the choice of<br />

School Patronage that was available in their area.<br />

This was done as part of the ‘Forum on Patronage<br />

and Pluralism’, which is trying to provide more<br />

choice for parents. <strong>The</strong> results of the survey<br />

indicated that there is sufficient interest in the<br />

establishment of an Educate Together school. <strong>The</strong> Department are now<br />

engaging with the Archdiocese to see how best the wishes of parents in<br />

these areas can be satisfied.<br />

weeks. This was an<br />

extremely intensive<br />

intervention and the St<br />

David’s lads acted as very positive role-models for their young learners. A big<br />
