Emergency medical technicians (<strong>EMT</strong>s) provide basic emergency care to victims of traum<strong>at</strong>ic and/or<br />
medical emergencies and transport them to the appropri<strong>at</strong>e medical facility.<br />
Supporting Adults through Voc<strong>at</strong>ional <strong>EMT</strong> Training (<strong>SAVE</strong>) is taught by an experienced <strong>EMT</strong> faculty<br />
member and a basic skills (reading, writing and m<strong>at</strong>h) educ<strong>at</strong>or. This combined approach will help<br />
ensure your success in becoming an <strong>EMT</strong>!<br />
Requirements<br />

9th grade reading level or above<br />
work eligibility and intention of working as an <strong>EMT</strong> upon program completion<br />
Pre-Training Class<br />
In order to enter the <strong>SAVE</strong> <strong>EMT</strong> <strong>Program</strong>, you must <strong>at</strong>tend and successfully complete a three week pretraining<br />
class th<strong>at</strong> will introduce you to the program’s rigorous schedule and expect<strong>at</strong>ions. You’ll also<br />
explore <strong>EMT</strong> content, including an<strong>at</strong>omy, physiology and medical ethics; receive CPR certific<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
training; and work on building your reading comprehension and study habits. You will be assessed on<br />
your academic performance as well as <strong>at</strong>tendance and class particip<strong>at</strong>ion to determine program<br />
eligibility.<br />
<strong>EMT</strong> Class<br />
Schedule: 4 days a week, from 9:30-4:30, for 4 months<br />
Instruction Areas: basic introduction, airway bre<strong>at</strong>hing and management, p<strong>at</strong>ient assessment, medical<br />
emergencies, trauma, infants and children, and ambulance oper<strong>at</strong>ions<br />
Procedures: assessing p<strong>at</strong>ients, taking vital signs, tre<strong>at</strong>ing injuries and fractures, providing oxygen,<br />
performing CPR, managing cardiac and respir<strong>at</strong>ory emergencies, tre<strong>at</strong>ing allergic reactions, and handling<br />
other types of emergencies<br />
Assessment: practical skills exams, written exams, and quizzes<br />
At the end of the program, you will take the NYS Department of Health Final Practical Exam and written<br />
Certific<strong>at</strong>ion Exam for <strong>EMT</strong>s.

Academic Support Class<br />
Schedule: once a week<br />
Instruction Areas: review of <strong>EMT</strong> training m<strong>at</strong>erials and concepts, academic skills and study str<strong>at</strong>egies<br />
Class Work: developmental writing assignments, group work and discussions<br />
Clinical Rot<strong>at</strong>ions & Job Placement<br />
During the <strong>SAVE</strong> <strong>EMT</strong> <strong>Program</strong>, you will complete two <strong>EMT</strong>-level ambulance clinical rot<strong>at</strong>ions, beginning<br />
after the midterm exam.<br />
The <strong>SAVE</strong> <strong>EMT</strong> <strong>Program</strong> is a collabor<strong>at</strong>ion between the Pre-Hospital Care <strong>Program</strong>s and the Pre-<strong>College</strong><br />
Academic <strong>Program</strong>ming Department in the Division of Adult and Continuing Educ<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>at</strong> <strong>LaGuardia</strong><br />
