Wixom Ford Plant - Reincarnation?

A plan is in the works to reincarnate the shuttered Ford

assembly plant in Wixom as a renewable energy lab and

production facility.

It may not be known for months if the renovation of the

plant will begin, but the Michigan Economic Growth

Authority recently approved $20 million in brownfield tax

credits from the state to redevelop two areas of a 317-acre

property at I-96 and Wixom Road. Ford Motor Company

plans to sell or lease the land to tenants that would re-use

the plant, most likely for products related to renewable

energy.

Townsend Energy Solutions, LLC, is interested in taking

over at least one of the parcels. They are negotiating with

Ford to buy property and turn the old plant into a place to

develop products that provide alternative energy sources

for cars, electronics and other power sources.

Besides negotiations with Ford, Townsend Energy

Solutions is also awaiting approval of federal tax

incentives. As many as 600-1,000 new jobs could be

created.

Anniversary Milestones Celebrated . . .

More than 300 people stopped by the Huron Valley

Ambulance headquarters in Ann Arbor in December to

help the nonprofit community ambulance service

celebrate their 30-year anniversary.

HVA began in 1981, first serving Belleville. Presently they

cover several western Wayne and southwest Oakland

County communities. Among the many accomplishments

over the past 30 years, HVA is most proud of the following:

• Among the first ambulance services in the U.S. to

become nationally accredited by the Commission on

Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS)

• All HVA ambulances are equipped with the latest life

saving technology and experienced paramedics.

• To meet the needs of people in their service areas who

cannot afford specialized transportation to physician

appointments, diagnostic tests or regularly scheduled

procedures like renal dialysis, the HVA Board of Trustees

created the HVA Social Responsibility Fund and

allocates $300,000 to subsidize the cost each year.

• HVA special units include a Mobile Intensive Care

Unit and medical support for HazMat teams, SWAT

teams, and Urban Search and Rescue teams.

• Camp 9-1-1 - a free, summer 2 day camp where

children ages 8 to 12 learn CPR, first aid and all about

EMS careers.

• EMSPlus Program - For one low annual fee, members

receive emergency ambulance/paramedic services

with no co-pays or out-of-pocket costs.

• The call center is only a push button away for seniors

who join EMS LifeLink, their 24-hour at-home monitoring

system.

Around the County

Wixom among one of five communities

Patterson Introduces for “One Stop Ready”

Business Attraction/Retention Pilot

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson recently

identified five local communities who have agreed to

participate in an economic development pilot program –

the first of its kind in the state – designed to reduce

delays and government red tape for business attraction

and retention projects.

Ferndale, the Village of Oxford, Rochester, Lyon

Township and Wixom were chosen to be part of the

“One Stop Ready” pilot that aims to streamline the

process of moving a business project from concept to

reality. The ultimate goal is to certify communities as

being One Stop Ready.

“We want all of our communities to have a core

understanding of economic development and to be

more efficient,” Patterson said. “We want them to be

more knowledgeable about and integrated with the

resources we offer locally and those offered by the

state. The Michigan Economic Development Corp. is

working on a redevelopment readiness program to be

launched soon and the Legislature is working on one

too. One Stop Ready will keep our communities out

front.”

Patterson said the One Stop Ready concept is based

on three components: knowledge, tools and strategy,

and implementation. It is not a rubber stamp for

economic development projects, nor a criticism of

current community practices, but rather an approach

that complements a community’s ability to respond

quickly and efficiently to economic development

opportunities.

Communities would work closely with the Department

of Economic Development & Community Affairs, which

offers various services including project financing and

micro loans, planning services, small business

counseling, workforce development, Main Street

Oakland County and an introduction to a host of state

and federal programs.

“The program is designed to make our responses fast

and efficient to opportunities,” Patterson said. “We are

sharing ‘best practices.’ We show them what tools are

available and how to use them, but we want the

communities to develop their own plans based on what

they learn.”

~

State Senator Joe Hune, R-Hamburg

Township submitted a bill that could

require people taking government

assistance to perform community

service if they are not participating in

a job training program.

Hune also submitted a bill that would

require public assistance applicants

to submit to a drug test if their

caseworker suspects they are

abusing drugs.

“These funds are designed to help

get people back on their feet and

working,” Hune said. “Most job

providers make potential employees

take a drug test as part of the hiring

process, and many more require

employees to submit to random drug

testing. Taxpayers should not be

funding drug habits, plain and

simple.”

The Department of Natural

Resources and Environment

announced Michigan’s only known

wild wolverine apparently died of

natural causes. The female

wolverine, first discovered by coyote

hunters near Bad Axe in February

2004, was about 9 years old. The

animal was the first wolverine ever

authenticated in Michigan.

The wolverine carcass is being made

into a full-body mount to be

displayed at the Saginaw Bay Visitor

Center at Bay City State

Recreational Area.

The manufacturing decline that has

dragged down the Michigan

economy for a decade, is now

experiencing an impressive

comeback.

Between 2000-2010, the state lost

nearly 423,000 jobs as the auto

industry declined. Now, however, it's

leading a bit of recovery having

added 26,400 manufacturing jobs in

2011. Jobs are gradually being

added as Michigan firms are finding

ways to compete with low-cost

manufacturers overseas.

~

Michigan's unemployment rate

dropped .5 percent in December, the

second-largest decline in the

country, according to the U.S.

Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The drop from 9.8 percent in

November to 9.3 percent in

December is second only to

Alabama (.6 percent decrease).

Michigan was among 18 other states

that experienced a significant

unemployment rate reduction.

Michigan added 66,500 jobs over the

span of one year causing the

unemployment rate from December

2010 to drop by 1.8 percent.

DNR Offers Free Fishing Weekend

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reminds everyone the annual

Winter Free Fishing Weekend is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18 and Sunday,

Feb. 19. On that weekend, everyone - residents and non-residents alike - can

fish without a license, though all other fishing regulations still apply.

Michigan has been celebrating Winter Free Fishing Weekend annually since

1994 as a way to promote awareness of the state's vast aquatic resources.

With more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, 36,000 miles of rivers

and 11,000 inland lakes, Michigan and fishing are a natural match.

"Michigan offers some of the finest freshwater fishing in the world, including

during the winter months," said DNR Director Rodney Stokes. "Fishing is an

inexpensive activity anyone can pursue as an individual or as a family.

We encourage you to get out this February and experience it for yourself, for

free!"

To encourage involvement in Free Fishing Weekends, organized activities are

being scheduled in communities across the state. These activities are

coordinated by a variety of organizations including: constituent groups,

schools, local and state parks, businesses and others.

There's still plenty of time to plan your own local Free Fishing Weekend event,

or find one occurring in your community. Visit the newly revamped website

www.michigan.gov/freefishing for all things related to this unique weekend;

including where you can find help on event planning and promotion and where

you can identify events in your area or register an official event.
