PIV
Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is
a non-intrusive optical method for
measuring particle velocity in a flow
stream, based on two successive images
taken in a very short time interval.
The two light pulses are delivered by
two lasers and images are recorded
by a Charge Coupled Device (CCD)
camera. Computer processing using
correlation techniques allows determination of successive positions of a particle and
reconstruction of the flow being studied. This method is used in flow dynamic studies
such as performed in the automotive and the aeronautic industries.
Yasmin is a family of high repetition rate Nd:YAG pulsed lasers. These lasers are designed and
developed for industrial applications and for operation in environmentally hostile situations.
They can be used in ultrasonic generation systems for thickness or defect measurement, surface
preparation such as deflashing in micro-electronics industry,
or ablation processes. These lasers are hermetically sealed
and dust free. They can work intensively 24 hours a day and
7 days a week. Active control of flash lamp voltage results in
a guaranteed lifetime of 200 million pulses. The Yasmin laser
emits in the infrared, visible, or ultraviolet spectrum and is
suited for the processing and the treatment of a wide range of
materials. These laser sources can be coupled to scanners for
TDL90
Modular Lasers
The YG980 family of modular Q-switched lasers is continuously improving
and undergoing new developments. These lasers include a number of high
energy options in green and blue. Depending on the model, the laser beam
generated in the oscillator is amplified through one or more pumping laser
cavities to achieve energies up to 2.5 joules per pulse for a typical pulse
duration of 10 ns. As is the case with other product families of <strong>Quantel</strong>
lasers, these systems also boast exceptional stability, excellent beam quality,
and a short warm-up time which is achieved through heating of the bench.
Available are a set of harmonic generators, up to the fifth harmonic. Line
narrowing options, including Single Longitudinal Mode (SLM) operation,
provide excellent coherence length. There is a wide range of various choices
which make it possible to modify the specifications of the laser to suit your
application specific requirements.
Tunable Lasers
The TDL90 is a tunable dye laser which has a universal platform that can be pumped by any
pulsed Nd:YAG laser commercially available in the market. It is especially well suited for coupling
to the Brilliant and YG980 laser families. It is a narrow bandwidth
laser system which is ideal for fine spectroscopy applications. The
accessible emission spectrum of this laser extends from 200 nm to
4.5 µm thanks to the harmonic generation options and frequency
mixing in different non-linear crystals. The reproducibility of
wavelength tunability is achieved through the use of a real time
feedback loop which is associated to a dedicated user-friendly
software. Pulse-to-pulse stability is achieved by active control of the
oscillator and the crystal temperature. The versatility of the TDL90
laser makes it the ideal tool for your spectroscopy applications.
CARS
The Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman
Scattering (CARS) spectroscopic
method is a pump probe measurement
of the Raman frequency offset of the
radiation emitted by a molecular
This Optical Parametric Oscillator (OPO) is the ideal complement for the Brilliant series of lasers.
It offers a compact solution to researchers looking for a broadband tunable light source. It is
integrated into a hermetically sealed module that fits directly
onto harmonic generators of the Brilliant or Brilliant B series. This
results in excellent mechanical stability for optimum performance.
Depending on the specific spectral range required, it can be pumped
at the wavelengths of 532 nm, 355 nm, or 266 nm. The unit can be
controlled by a computer. It is possible to couple some models of
the Rainbow laser, specifically those emitting in the visible range
of the spectrum, to an optical fiber for increased flexibility and
simplified integration.
species subject to intense laser beams,
such as the emission output of a YG980
This laser was designed using standard components of our YG980 series of products and it was
intended for metrology applications for the European Tokamak installed at Culham in Great Britain
(JET-EFDA). The main technological challenge of this system was to obtain a high level of pulse
energy - greater than 5 joules of infrared energy - delivered in less than 10 ns, a repetition rate of
20 Hz and linear polarization purity greater than 98%, all at the same
time. The engineering team of <strong>Quantel</strong> successfully designed and
built a laser that met all these specifications.
Laser for Undersea Holography
With the target being more than 50 meters away from the laser, beam
quality and beam stability were also critical parameters. Considering
the high average power of this laser which is greater than 100 W, the
optical bench of this laser is relatively small; approximately 1 meter
by 2 meters in size. This compact optical bench meets all the high
repetition rate and linear polarization specifications required for this
demanding application. The system is controlled through the local
Ethernet network.
When you want to take 3D holographic pictures of oceanic plankton more than 100 meters below
the surface of the sea, it is difficult to find the ideal laser source in a catalog of standard products.
For this project <strong>Quantel</strong> designed a special Nd:YAG oscillator-amplifier laser, passively Q-Switched
by a saturable absorber to provide sufficient coherence length. The harmonic generation of this
system was also designed carefully so that phase
matching would not be critical. Cooling of the
laser source was provided by the sea water. The
laser-camera assembly was mounted in a casing
specially designed by our customer. The principal
technical specification was an output energy of
300 mJ emitted at the wavelength of 532 nm with
the repetition rate of 1 Hz, and a coherence length
which had to be greater than 1 meter.
These lasers are used principally for measurements of thermal diffusivity. Their pulse duration is
in the range of a few hundred of microseconds, depending on the specific type of discharge circuit
which is used. The energy delivered can reach several hundred of joules per pulse, generated by a
laser with a relatively small size.
The Megajoule Laser Project
For many years <strong>Quantel</strong> has been heavily involved
in the aerospace and military projects, mainly those
related to the design and development of diodepumped
switched laser sources with applications
associated with on-board systems, missile guidance,
target designation, space LIDAR, and document
authentication. These are only a few examples of the
numerous military applications and projects which
<strong>Quantel</strong> has participated in. We have successfully
designed, built, and delivered numerous special laser
solutions to the military and aerospace customers.
The Megajoule laser is an essential element of the French Atomic Energy Commission’s Simulation
program, which is intended to provide a long-lasting deterrent after the permanent end to nuclear
tests. <strong>Quantel</strong> is involved in the design and manufacturing of pre-amplification laser modules which
are designed to put in shape, both spatially and temporally, the beam coming from the injection
fiber source. This project requires the combined skills of our lamp pumping and diode pumping
laser design engineering teams. This project serves as a launching platform for the development
and understanding of a variety of new technologies as well as the implementation of project
management and process quality control tools.
The laser emits pulses of 150 mJ at 355 nm and 100 Hz in a
burst mode. This program is being carried out in partnership
with Galileo Avionica (Italy) under the direction of EADS-Astrium
(European Aeronautic Defense and Space company). At <strong>Quantel</strong>
we designed and manufactured the multi-passage zig-zag
type of amplifier in diode-pumped laser heads which is used to
amplify the energy of an 8 mJ oscillator to about 500 mJ, under
conditions of space vacuum and without the use of any active
cooling mechanism.
