CLASS HISTORY
By HOWARD WILLIAM MINCHIN
HIS history is not written for the purpose of boasting of At last we were full fledged Juniors and we started in to show |
the triumphs and successes of our class, but merely to serve that we were worthy of our position. It was at the beginning of our 1
as a remembrance in future years of what we did at old third year when the first attempt was made to introduce soccer-football I
East High School. into the school to take the place of the old rugby game. The first |
Our class was greatly handicapped owing to the fact that we had soccer team to represent the school was composed of a large number |
to attend the afternoon session for one year. We were able to take of June '13 boys and it was largely due to our efforts that soccer was 1
part in tut very few activities and when we returned to school in our put on a basis with the major sports of the school. The interclass |
Sophomore year, we were considered little better than Freshmen by debating tournament which has now become an annual affair was also i
the upper classmen. They did not hold this opinion of us very long, started by our class. In the winter months the members of our class 1
however, for the way in which our class supported the various school were active in the production of the first Comic Opera ever given by 1
activities clearly showed, that we were a live class and ready to give the school and the Junior Dance, the big event of our Junior year, *
East High School our best. was a success. I
Our first social success was the Sophomore sleighride and informal Our Senior year was the most important one of our high school
dance. This was attended by one hundred or more of the Sophomores course. During the first term we gave the Farce which had been postand
their friends and they all expressed it as being the best ever. poned from our Junior year and later our class presented a Shakes-
We were also successful in athletics in our Sophomore year. Our perian play out of doors. This was the first time that an East High
class baseball team won the interclass championship of the school and School class attempted to give an outdoor play but, judging from its
the Sophomore study room team carried off first honors in the school success, it will no doubt be repeated by future Senior classes
basketball tournament.
Our class has seen football and fraternities go and other activities
It was not until Arbor Day of our second year, however, that our take their place. The abolition of these was a big disappointment to
class gave the school its real surprise. On that memorable day, the the majority of the students but at all times our class remained loval
members of the class assembled in front of school and planted an ivy to the school in an effort to make the newer sports and activities as
with appropriate ceremonies. Although the planting of ivy is an old popular for the East High students of future years, as football and
custom in most of the universities and many high schools it remained the other organizations were to us. It is now time for us to say "ood
for June 1913 to inaugurate it at East High School, and it will no bye, but in our future life we will always hold dear in our memories
doubt become a tradition of the school.
the pleasant times we had at our Alma Mater, old East High School

CLASS PROPHECY
By NANNIE E. McGLENNON, Class Prophet
"p= T was a hot sultry late June day in the year 1933 and I stood
at the corner of Broadway and Fourteenth Streets in the
midst of the late afternoon crowd, wondering how to spend
the next two or three hours. With me was my old high
school friend Elizabeth Barry, now Madame Leblanc, whom
I had met the day before. She was making her annual visit to America
and suggested that we spend the following afternoon together. Consequently,
I had called at the Haldorf for her and we were now trying
to decide between the Aerial Elevated and the old fashioned 'rubberneck
wagon."
"Let us take the sight seeing automobile," said Elizabeth, with her
slight French accent. It is true they are very passe, but it will take us
back to the old days in Rochester, when we used to ride in the one
which went out.East Avenue and looked so much like a house on
wheels." That plan suited me, and hastily buying a newspaper from the
little "newsie" by my side, we hurried across the street and climbed
into the machine. While we were waiting for it to start, I glanced over
the paper and was attracted by the large headlines on the front page.
"New York Senator Rapped on the Head by Colleague for
Scathing Remarks. Bout Between Hon. H. E. Rauschenbusch and
Senator from Missouri Causes Much Amusement in the Senate Today,"
I read. I showed the article to Elizabeth and we both had a
hearty laugh, remembering Hilmar's thinly veiled sarcasm in constitutional
assemblies some twenty years before. Over the page in the
court news was an account of a hotly contested divorce case between
Lawyers Sarachen and Bradfield, and it was mentioned that Judge
Cochrane lost some of his habitual gravity when the defendant, Philip
Barry was brought in, charged by his wife with having too large a
collection of photographs of fair damsels to be considered truly
devoted to her. The fashion page was edited by Evelyn Rosenbloom,
assisted by Edna Schaick, and they predicted a return of the onetime
fashionable hobble skirt and bulgarian blouse. The clever illustrations
of the prevailing modes were made by Helen Carberry.
Just as the barker called "All aboard," a dark business-like little
man jumped in next to us, and as he mopped his perspiring face with
his handkerchief, he drew the "Horticulturists 1 Review" from his
pocket. Elizabeth and I seemed to recognize him, and after a few
moments thought, we exclaimed simultaneously "Harold O'Brien." It
was indeed he, and we had a long chat together. Harold was one of
New York's most successful salesman and simply in listening to the
explanation of his work, I had hard work from investing in his concern.
He lived in Tarrytown, and told us that his greatest pleasure was
to return after a business trip to work in his garden which had a statewide
reputation. There, he cultivated blue roses which bloomed in
March and many other heretofore unheard of varieties. Harold also
told us of many of our former classmates. Chaliss Reed was the
matron of an orphanage; Davina Sheldon a professional chaperone;
Lillian Sage a cloak model; Harold Meng a clown in Barnum &
Bailey's circus. James Baird and Milton Trimby reporters; Edward
Grauwiller a deep sea diver (this was probably caused by the great
profundity he always showed in school) ; Kenneth Cunningham the
owner of New York State's largest chicken farm; Ruth Shepard a
hair-dresser; and Judge Harmon and Robert Taft the new athletic
directors at Yalevard.
As we passed the Lyceum we noticed a sign announcing the early
appearance of America's great emotional actor, Donald Sawyer. Mr.
Sawyer's able manager and private secretary, Edmund Weigand, attracted
as much attention as the star himself, and had an international
reputation for novel neckties and waistcoats.
As we were crossing Fifty-third Street, we narrowly missed striking
down a short important-looking little man with a large diamond
stick-pin in his scarlet tie. As the machine stopped and the chauffeur
jumped out to make sure no harm was done, 1 heard someone in back
of me exclaim:
"Why, that's Sol Paley, the multi-millionaire." It surely was, and
how important he looked! A trained nurse stepped forward from the
,

Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Yearbook Collection
crowd and we recognized Rhoda Whiting. She immediately pronounced
Mr. Paley unhurt and as the crowd was dispersing we noticed
a poor man pushing a baby carriage and holding another small child
by the hand, struggling vainly-to cross the street. As he tried for the
third time, a friend approached him, whom we recognized as Walter
Pardee.
"Hello Doty!" said Walter. "Come on to the ball-game with me,
I'm sporting editor of the Times and I have a pass." "Sorry, old man,"
answered the patient D'Orville, "but I'm taking the kids to the Zoo.
There, there, Arabella, father's here," and he finally gained the other
side. "Such happiness!" ejaculated Harold with a groan.
As we left the business section of the city, the barker explained
the most important buildings on each side. "To your right, is the
College of Modern Languages, Dr. Joseph Schleyer, principal and professor
of German. To the left is Dr. Charles Teresi's famous children's
hospital. Farther on is Miss~ Florence Dalrymple's Select School
for Young Ladies."
As we approached Madison Square, we saw a large crowd, and
upon inquiring, found it was attracted by the weekly concert given by
the Trott Band. The selection it was then playing was composed by
Mr. Trott himself and Mark VanLiew had written the words.
Coming towards us, was a tall, pood-looking man in naval uniform.
There was something about him strangely familiar and as I was trying
to decide whether or not I knew him, he came forward and introduced
himself as Admiral Bennett Sykes, U. S. N. We urged him to join us,
and then we four old June '13's started to talk over old times and
inquire after old friends. James told us that Edward Herendeen was
United States Tennis Champion, as well as a successful banker;
Clarence Oppenheimer owned a tobacco plantation in Cuba; Gordon
Mirick had won the Nobel prize for his remarkable work in mathematics;
Sol Rabinowitz was New York City chess champion; Walter
Reily owned a ferry company which operated between New York and
Coney Island, and Dr. Roscoe Taylor was doing a wonderful work
among the deep-sea fishes of Labrador.
We had completed our trip in the sight-seeing machine and as it
was about six o'clock, decided to hunt up a restaurant and get something
to eat. As Harold was going to take the Admiral home with
CLASS PROPHECY-Continued
him, we said goodbye to them and started down town. In the distance
we heard a band and learned from the passersby that a suffrage parade
was coming. We decided to wait and see it, and indeed were glad we
did, for in it were some of our former classmates. Gladys Shafer led,
on a white horse, followed by Sadie Greenstone and Hazel Molz,
Louise Peck and Marion Paulley distributed yellow badges through
the crowd.
After the parade we found the restaurant and tired and hungry,
we stepped inside. A smiling and polite proprietor came forward to
met us, whom we recognized as Lesser Levin. He told us that Herman
Lefkowitz had retained his fondness for Latin and was teaching it in
China; Albert Morris was a successful manufacturer of clothing;
Fred Hewitt owned the roller-coaster and chute-the-chutes at Coney
Island; Saul Herman had recently published a chemistry text-book, and
Richard Leonardo had a fruit farm in southern New York.
As Elizabeth and I were leaving the restaurant we very nearly
bumped into a lady coming in the opposite direction. "Inez Pond," I
exclaimed. "Excuse me for calling you that, but it is more natural
than anything else." Inez smiled good-naturedly and insisted on taking
us home with her in her new aeroplane called "The Bat" which
was a short distance down the street. She had a delightful home and
husband, and five of the liveliest children I ever saw. We told her of
our adventures that afternoon and asked her about some of our other
old friends. She told us that Marion Ament had a studio where she
designed American fashions; Maude White (that was) had just
written a book, "How to be Happy though Married"; Alice Foley was
director of the lunch-room at Washington Irving High School and
Gertrude Thompson and Gladys Griffith taught there; Anita Hines was
a social service secretary; Emma Knapp was a kindergarten teacher;
Marion Preston and Carrie Odell were music teachers! and Mary
Owen was a member of the Supreme Court.
Inez invited Elizabeth and me to be her guests that night at the
theatre, so we left the five healthy children to the care of their father
and went to see some vaudeville. Louise Bowen did a clever little singing
act and Rose Van Guyt provoked much laughter in a scene from
"Madam Sans Gene." Mabel Huckle and Esther Nuffer were in the
audience and informed us that they were both doing settlement work

Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Yearbook Collection
CLASS PROPHECY-Conti mue<
They also told us that Effe Malette was teaching solid geometry in
the University; Frances West was a popular illustrator; and Esther
Meyer had joined a famous company of Russian dancers which was
now appearing in Europe.
As we were leaving the theatre, we noticed an especially fine
motor car waiting at the curb and as Inez was vainly attempting to
repress a sigh of envy, two men came out of a neighboring building
and got into the machine. Recognizing them as Hugh S. Dewey and
Howard W. Minchin, we hurried to speak to them and were invited
to take a ride. Hugh explained that the machine was his own make,
embracing all the latest features in automobile construction and
equipped with the Dewey spring seat and non-puncturable tires.
Howard was in New York on a business trip to look after his shares
in the Telescope Trust. He evidently had retained his ability to do
many things at the same time successfully, for he was Mayor of the
Western city in which he lived and author of a book, "What the
Canals of Mars Really Are."
The boys—or men they were now—had kept track of many of
their classmates and informed us that Ezra Frankel and John Bornkessel
were acquiring great wealth by their business ability. Samuel
Barber was a singing teacher and Alexander Douglas a Y. M. C. A.
secretary. Meyer Miller was a prize-fighter; Neal Murphy and Roy
Howlitt, scientific farmers. David Mason spent his time in the musty
laboratory, hunting for a substitue for gold and David Mendelson
was teaching music abroad. Oliver Smith and Katherine Emerson
had a dancing school where all the latest dances were taught, and
Harold Smith was leader of an orchestra.,
As we were driving down the street someone hailed us from an
aeroplane overhead, and looking up we saw Allan McConnell. He was
in a hurrv but stopped long enough to tell us he was an artists' model—
"Artists of the Gibson type," he was careful to explain. Farther along
standing on the curb was Earl Miller, now floorwalker in Vanamaker's
and he had a copy of the great new novel which was attracting so
much attention, in his hand.
"Did you know that Esther Olsan wrote this?" he asked. "Esther
Olson, a novelist!" I exclaimed. "I always knew she would write
novels," said Inez. "She was collecting material even when she was
in High School."
As Earl was quite a friend of the ladies in former times, we
"Do you know what day this is?" asked Arthur. We confessed
our ignorance and he replied "It's the twentieth anniversary of our
graduation from East High." Twenty years! It didn't seem possible.
But it was the 23rd of June, 1933, and as we shook hands in saying
goodbye, we made a mental wish for the everlasting prosperity and
success of that splendid school, where we had spent four such happy
years of our life.
asked him what has become of some of the June '13 girls. He told
us that Johanna Ramsbeck was the wife of the Japanese Ambassador;
Harriet Deane and Muriel Jones were playing in stock companies;
Ethel Greene was a librarian, and Marion Culley was old Dr. Wiley's
assistant and probable successor in the government department of
pure foods. Edith Harrison and Margaret Gerahty were "personally
conducting" parties of young girls abroad; Lois Hill and Gertrude
Carberry were now investigating conditions in the rubber section of
South America, and starting a gum factory there. Pearl Bennett was
carrying on excavations in Crete, and Ruth Cornell was principal of a
girls' preparatory school. Alma Dailor and Esther Salblowsky were
her assistants, and Miss Dailor insisted that a recess of ten minutes
be given the pupils every hour, as he knew from her own high school
days that some mental relaxation was necessary. At this point Earl
looked at his watch and excused himself hastily, explaining that his
wife was very particular about his being home early.
Inez was getting uneasy about her children so we took her home
and then left Elizabeth at the Haldorf. As we were standing in the
lobby, we noticed a man in evening dress come from the palm room,
literally surrounded by ladies. It was Arthur Jennings, and excusing
himself from his fair admirers, he came forward to speak to us. He
was now a fortune-teller, catering especially to the fairer sex, and
"making all kinds of money" as he expressed it. He told us that Abe
Cominsky was a professional ball-player; Harold Dugan a veterinary
surgeon and Pauline Rosner was living in Paris where she was a
leading modiste.

Class Poet
OW the class of white and gold
Bids farewell to days of yore,
And fond ties and friendships old
Holds in mem ry ever more.
When time calls we must obey
But we backward turn our eye
To the days when -wont to stay
'Neath the roof of old East High.
Oh ! may we be ever true
To that class we hold so dear;
Great success in aught we do
In our ev'y future year.
May our purpose still withstand
All unfriendly blows and strife,
Triumphing on see or land
Storms severe of after-life.
Many years may come to pass,
And diverted be our ways,
Nineteen-thirteen, our lov'd class
Never can forget those days,
When "we fought to gain fair honor
For the purple and the -white ;
May East High, our Alma Mater
Ever keep her standard bright.

SONGS and YELLS
SCALP DANCE
pTH big chief and his band
I Of fearless Orient Braves
. - V We've jump't the reservation
We're on the war path lookin' for
Some pale face scalps to raise,
Have heap big celebration.
We've struck the trail, yi, yi, yi,
Blood in our eye, yi, yi, yi,
Our curdling yels are ringing,
Wlien the game is done and we have Avon
Their top knots we will -wave,
Back to our wigwam bringing.
CHORUS
Yes, we'll scalp em, scalp em, scalp em,
Make 'em bite the dust;
We'll smear up their backs you bet
Beat them worse than they've been yet,
Were up to the minute, always in it,
And we'll rub it in ;
And -while -we yell they'll play like—-well
Old Orient -will -win.
DOWN THE FIELD
PARCH, march on, down the field,
Fighting for old East High ;
Break through old line
Their strength to defy ;
We'll give a long cheer for East High's team
Ther're here to win again,
team may fight to the end
But we will win.
THE YEAR IN ATHLETICS
By HOWARD W. MINCHIN
athletic season of 1912-13 was not only a most
^successful one from the standpoint of victories won,
also in the development of the lower classmen who
will form a nucleus for the teams of the next two years.
The Soccer team, captained by Oliver Smith, played in
the Saturday Afternoon City League, and despite the fact that
their opponents were veterans at the game, they made a most
creditable showing.
The basketball team, led by Warren Gibbs, went through
the season with fourteen victories to their credit against three
defeats, the season ending with a decisive win over West High
School. With one or two exceptions all of this year's team
will be eligible next season and with Judge Harmon, as captain,
prospects for a winning team are very bright.
The indoor track team won first place in the annual University
of Rochester interscholastic meet and the outdoor team
captured first honors in the Batavia meet. The outdoor team
also took third place in the Colgate University interscholastic
meet. Captain Harold E. O'Brien was a heavy point winner
in each of these meets and his loss will be keenly felt next
year.
Georg'e Durbin proved an efficient leader for the baseball
team and to date the nine has won the majority of its games.
Hockey has lost none of its popularity as a school sport
and a strong team represented East High during the past
season. Seven of the eight games played were turned into
victories, the team losing to the University of Rochester seven.
The team was under the leadership of Ralph Bickford who
has been a member of the squad for three seasons.
Girls' basketball is now a recognized school sport, and
those who play on the team are awarded a purple "E". The
girls were returned the winners in all but one of their games,
their victories including two games with West High School.
The Advantages of a College Education
By HOWARD D. MINCHIN, Ph. D.
o£ the University o£ Rochester
COMMENCEMENT DAY means the day of change to
every graduate. To some it may mark the close of
school life, and to others a step leading to college. To
all must come the problem of making a choice and
the questions which confront them are: "What place in life
can I find?" or "To what College shall I go?" Emerson says
that the world presents to each one of us a test involving the
following questions: "Who are you? What do you? Can
you obtain what you wish ? Is there method in your consciousness?"
Can you help any soul? It surely seems worth while
that each member of the graduating class should give careful
thought to these questions.
It is training that gives freedom in the use of the materials
that are yours and it is this freedom that marks the power
of the great and the successful. Can you afford to go into the
world with your present training?
One must have material in the nature of thoughts and
plans and he must also have ability to give expression to these
efficiently. Success in life is the fitting of tools and material
to heart and mind. It is the fruit of character, and character
involves sincerity, thoroughness, and truthfulness.
Success comes to him who has the clear vision of the morrow
and then lives the to-day so completely that it makes for
the work of that morrow. He is successful who is not blinded
by the gain of specific ends but seeks complete development.
To him there will ever be ahead a stretch of inviting highway.
The college opens its doors gladly to him who desires the
greater vision. Its curriculum offers him a means of training
and here the youth is to find himself. The training the college
has to offer is for him who desires a clearer understanding of
life. The four years come at a time when youth is full of noble
desire and ideals are clear. It is a transition period when
knowledge commences to show its power.
College is worth while to him only who allows it to be
worth while. The college is not only the place for one to find
himself but it aids one in the finding. It offers the opportunity
and the result rests with the individual. If you have the desire
to be efficient the college proposes to join with you in workingout
the problems that are to be yours. There will be obstacles
to meet, but
"He who climbs the mountain does not always climb;
The winding road slants downward many a time ;
Yet each descent is higher than the last.
Has thy path fallen? That will soon be past.
Beyond the curve the way leads up and on;
Think not thy goal forever lost and gone.
Keep moving forward; if thine aim is right,
Thou canst not miss the shining mountain height."
MUSICAL CLUBS
GHE Boys' and Girls' glee clubs and the orchestra have
experienced a most successful season. The glee clubs
were under the direction of Eunice Ensor and Ludvvig
Schenck was in charge of the orchestra.
Early in the season during Miss Ensor's illness the glee
clubs were without any instructor, and although this handicapped
them somewhat, upon her return the members took
up the work with greater enthusiasm and in the end they were
rewarded with success.
The glee clubs this year for the first time sang several
classical pieces at their various concerts and these were the
cause of much favorable comment by the music critics of
Rochester.
The orchestra and the glee clubs have given concerts in
many of the city churches and in nearby towns, in all thirteen
appearances being made. The male quartette and the mixed
octette took part in most of the concerts and the clubs were
fortunate in having several soloists and readers.
The Musical Clubs have worked hard this year and in all
of their appearances they have made a strong showing which
reflects credit upon East High School.
The Revision of the Constitution
By HILMAR RAUSCHENBUSCH
^-—T^HILE June, 1913. was the ranking class, the great duty of
• I l revising the East Hi S h School Constitution was undertaken
1 I #and successfully completed.
^M*r For years the necessity of revision had grown more and
more evident. The matter was many times taken under consideration
—and dropped. A committee was finally appointed that spent many
weary nights pondering over the good of the school, the grammar,
superfluities and shortcomings of the old Constitution. But this committee
had the brawn and the brain and the blood of the Saxon and
the Celt and the Gaul, so a report was finally made. End of Act I.
It was now up to the population of East High School, the Students'
Association, one thousand strong, to deliberate on the Constitution.
This they did. The school had never before attempted anything of a
similar character. However, no faculty aid or interference of any
kind was needed or exercised.
Seven "Constitutional" Assemblies were held. In only the first
and last was there no discussion. All the others had matters that
absorbed the attention of the students.
But there were two great struggles that will always stand head
and shoulders above the rest. "R's" for Soccer and representation in
the Council for the "Hold Overs." Both were entirely new things.
Both were adopted by the Association, but the Council later rejected
the one concerning the "Hold Overs."
The discussion on the Soccer insignia was a fight by some of the
athletes in the school who believed in "the good old times" against the
more progressive element. The fight went on for weeks before the
matter came up for action. It was a good fight and the losers were
no less loyal to the sons of East High School than before.
The other fight was more personal and bitter. The welfare of the
school was no longer at stake, simply the welfare of small groups of
"studes," the hold-overs. In this case the other students sat back and
cheered the leaders on, instead of taking part themselves as they
usually did. The matter finally passed; and it took several sessions of
the Executive Council before the effects of that vote were destroyed.
The good results of these "Constitutional" Assemblies are many.
Everyone became acquainted with the rudiments of parliamentary law
and the possibilities of preventing and hastening the transaction of
business. This will undoubtedly show itself in future class meetings.
Then over a thousand pupils became acquainted with the fact that
constitutions are made and not handed down by former generations
as something sacred and not to be touched. Nearly fifty amendments
of some kind or other were made and fought out. These discussions
provoked oratory. Everybody felt the necessity of being able to
speak intelligently on some question. Self government in East High
School was more firmly established and was proved expedient. These
are direct results 'of the "Constitutional" Assemblies.
The custom of singing the Alma Mater after every assembly
originated during these meetings.
There are certain men who should be thanked for contributing to
the success of the assemblies. The Constitutional Committee, composed
of Craig Cochrane, Hilmar Rauschenbusch, Morris Copeland,
Winfield Riefler, Vernon Bowman, Howard W. Minchin and Harold
E. O'Brien, did its work efficiently, and the secretary of the Students'
Association, Howard W. Minchin and his assistant, Morris Copeland,
both worked hard to keep the records of the meetings correct.
Although on numerous occasions in the past decade certain amendments
were made to the Constitution, but until this year it has never
been entirely revised by the students. It is hoped that the work has
been done well and that the new Constitution will aid the student;, in
future years in carrying on school activities.
