We provide our students with opportunities
for study beyond those offered within many
discipline-based departments. We provide
modules on society and politics, linguistics
and culture, literature, film and history, in
an intellectually dynamic and supportive
environment. Our interdisciplinary programmes
are structured in ways that broaden and
deepen knowledge of the countries and
regions you study and mean that virtually
all interests can be accommodated within
specific degree programmes.
We are part of the School of Histories,
Languages and Cultures, and we offer
teaching in French Studies, German Studies,
Iberian and Latin American Studies (which
includes language learning in Spanish,
Portuguese, Catalan and Basque), Italian
Studies and Comparative American Studies.
You will have the opportunity not only to
learn about the culture and societies of other
countries, but to experience life there first
hand. Links with universities in Europe, the US,
Canada, and in countries across Latin America,
allow you to study abroad for a semester or a
year, depending on your degree programme.
WHY CHOOSE CULTURES, LANGUAGES
AND AREA STUDIES AT LIVERPOOL?
Breadth and tradition. We have a long and
prestigious research tradition: French, German,
Italian and Spanish have been taught here for
over 100 years and recently Latin American
Studies has celebrated its 40th anniversary.
Friendly and supportive. Students thrive in our
friendly academic environment. We maintain an
accessible and open relationship between staff
and students and strive to nurture personal as
well as academic development. Each student
is allocated an academic advisor who is a first
port-of-call in case of academic difficulty. Our
academic community is strengthened through
the Staff-Student Liaison Committee which
meets regularly. In addition, there are student
societies which organise social and cultural
events. There is a strong sense of community
and students often organise their own activities.
We keep students in touch with the latest news
through our blogs (soclas.wordpress.com),
through Facebook pages and Twitter. We have
a dedicated networking site for year abroad
students where they can communicate with
tutors in Liverpool and share their experiences
with each other.
Excellent employability. We place a
strong emphasis on employability, through
extra-curricular activities, a close partnership
with the Careers & Employability Service
and excellent links with UK and European
employers which ensures that students are
helped to plan ahead for their careers from
the beginning of their first year.
Research excellence. Our staff are our
most valuable learning and teaching resource.
Students have access to active researchers
working at the cutting edge of their disciplines
who directly link their research experience to
their teaching. Our research-active staff give
students insights into the latest knowledge,
most recent findings and new materials.
STUDY ABROAD
All students have the opportunity to spend
time abroad as part of their degree. For
Comparative American Studies there is the
possibility of spending a semester in Canada,
Latin America or the USA during the second
year. All other programmes feature a year
abroad in the third year. This year can be
spent teaching English, attending university
or completing a work placement in commerce
or an NGO in one or more countries where
the target language is spoken.
We have links with universities in Aix-en-
Provence, Alcalá de Henares, Alicante,
Barcelona, Bari, Bremen, Bonn, Dijon, Florence,
Göttingen, Lisbon, Lyon, Nebrija, Padova, Paris,
Porto, Rennes, Rome (La Sapienza), Salzburg,
Santiago de Compostela, Toulouse, Würzberg,
Valladolid and Vigo. Recent work placements in
France include Canal +, Eurogroup, Eurosport,
Moët et Chandon and Nestlé. In Germany:
Berlin Story, Bosch, DaimlerChrysler, PYSMA,
Siemens and Zaenker. In Spain: Bosch (Spain),
Samsonite and RBS and in Italy, RAI (Italian
National Broadcasting Company).
Other countries where students have recently
spent the year abroad include: Argentina,
Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile,
Cuba, Ecuador, Luxembourg, Portugal, La
Reunion, Mexico, Peru, Switzerland, Uruguay,
Researchincontext
The University of Liverpool is a research-intensive
university, and many of the academic staff in Cultures,
Languages and Area Studies are leading researchers
in their fields. What this means for you as a student
is that your learningwillbeinformedbytheverylatest
developments in the area. An example of a current
research interest in French and Italian is the linguistic
landscape project, led by Robert Blackwood and
Stefania Tufi.
As well as undertaking their own fieldwork
along the French and Italian Mediterranean
coastlines, Dr Blackwood and Dr Tufi extend
their research interests into their teaching.
Together, they team-teach a second year
module open to all students in Cultures,
Languages and Area Studies which not only
introduces undergraduates to the examination
of language in the public space, but requires
students to undertake their own fieldwork
in Liverpool (or beyond). Supervised by
Dr Blackwood and Dr Tufi, students assess
ways in which different languages appear
in the public space, including the spread of
Polish in supermarkets, the use of Chinese
languages in Liverpool’s Chinatown, and
the attempts to cater for the speakers of
different languages who settle in Liverpool.
This kind of project is ideally suited to
further study during the year abroad, where
students have analysed multilingualism on
war memorials in northern France, in tourist
information in Burgundy, and in areas where
regional languages are used. Several students
have elected to write final year dissertations on
linguistic landscape topics, under supervision
of Dr Blackwood and Dr Tufi, who use their
own experience as researchers in this area
of sociolinguistics to inform their teaching.
At the same time, Dr Blackwood and Dr Tufi
are working alongside the Scots Language
Centre to exploit their findings from regional
languages in France and Italy to encourage
the revival of Scots in Scotland, including
increasing the language’s visibility in signage,
marketing and online.
We are justifiably proud of our excellent record
on graduate employment. Our graduates go
on to careers in all sectors worldwide.
These include the media, industry and commerce,
finance, local and central government,
administration, translation, interpreting and
teaching in schools and universities. Many of
our students also undertake postgraduate study,
either in our own department or, for example on
a PGCE, translation or law conversion course.
QUALIFYING YOU FOR LIFE
All students have the opportunity to gain
employability skills and work experience
and we work closely with the Careers
& Employability Service to ensure that the
curriculum delivers the skills that graduate
employers are looking for.
The year abroad also offers an excellent
opportunity to develop these skills. Students
can choose from taking a work placement,
working as a language assistant in a school
or undertaking study at a university. Employers
really value graduates who have an international
experience as part of their degree studies and
this is demonstrated by the wide range of local,
national and international employers that our
graduates work for. Some of the employability
sessions that our students have taken part in
this year include commercial and business
awareness, networking skills, how to make
the most of careers fairs and employability
workshops that include meeting with
employers and language graduates. In
partnership with the Careers & Employability
Service, we hold an annual Languages Careers
Fair which is attended by some 20 languagerelated
employers who are always keen to
meet with our students and is always highly
regarded by those who attend. The European
Commission visits annually to talk to students
about translating and interpreting careers
within the EU.
WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITIES
Students and graduates can join the
working-abroad@liv.ac.uk email list which
advertises language-related part-time jobs,
vacation work, work placements and graduate
positions in the UK and worldwide.
HOW YOU LEARN
You will be taught in a mixture of formal
lectures, seminars and small group tutorials
where a friendly environment prevails. Great
attention is paid to giving feedback on
assessed work and the relatively small number
of students compared to competitor institutions
means that academic staff are able to track the
progress of individual students and intervene to
improve learning. The vast majority of modules
involve some continuous assessment.
Language tuition takes place in small groups
with native speakers playing a prominent part
and includes a range of skills such as listening,
writing, speaking and translation. Students
are also expected to make regular use of the
language learning facilities to enhance their
own study. We encourage our students to
become independent learners, and support
them through our dedicated library resources,
e-learning initiatives and structured tasks
outside the classroom.
French
French is not merely the language
of France but is one of the world’s
most important languages in terms
of speaker numbers and its role in
science, industry and international
diplomacy. Fluency in French opens
up dynamic and fast-changing parts
of the world outside Europe, including
North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, as
well as parts of the Caribbean, the
Indian Ocean and the Pacific. A mastery
of this language brings with it access
to cultural products including world
literature and cinema, but also
important social, cultural, historical
and linguistic debates.
At the University of Liverpool, we take a broad
approach to the study of French. Whilst the
perfection of language skills is at the heart of all
modern languages degrees in Liverpool, all our
degrees demand a full intellectual engagement
with a wide selection of areas in French studies.
As a subject group, we have a strong interest
in looking at French in and beyond France,
with the expectation that students will look at
French in the Caribbean, Quebec, Africa and
Asia. In addition, we cover aspects of French
studies from various historical, social, literary,
filmic and linguistic aspects, ensuring that
we not only teach traditional areas of interest
but are committed to ensuring students
experience and understand better the
questions that people are asking themselves
across the French-speaking world, from
Port-au-Prince to Paris, from Montreal to
Marseille, from Guadeloupe to Geneva.
The French subject group at Liverpool is a
small and friendly unit with four first-language
French speakers among its staff. Our team
consists of dedicated language tutors and
academic researchers who are international
experts in their fields. We research and teach
French colonial history, the Second World
War, the mediaeval and Renaissance periods,
French film, and sociolinguistics. We offer
a supportive environment in and out of the
classroom, e-learning resources and close
supervision during the year abroad in a
francophone country. Our students participate
in a number of extracurricular activities,
including the regular Café français, and
the departmental football team.
Italian Studies
The Italian language carries an
unparalleled cultural capital. The
Italian Renaissance laid the foundations
for much of western values and culture
of the last five centuries. Italy has
produced remarkable figures such
as Dante, Michelangelo, Galileo, Fellini
and Eco, to name but a few. According
to UNESCO, over 60% of the world’s art
treasures are found in Italy. A founding
member of the European Community,
today’s Italy is one of the world’s top
exporters and is ranked amongst the
world’s largest economies. The UK is
the country’s third trading partner in
the EU. Knowing Italian allows you to
Iberian and Latin
American Studies
Iberian and Latin American Studies
covers the languages, literatures
and histories of Spain, Portugal and
Latin America. Liverpool is one of
the few UK universities able to offer
Basque, Catalan, Galician and
Portuguese Studies, which makes
our courses more diverse and
stimulating than many.
Spanish and Portuguese are truly
global languages; Spanish has over
400 million speakers and Portuguese
Liverpool we take a pluricultural and
plurilingual approach to the Luso-
interest in looking at Spanish in and
beyond Spain with an emphasis on
the variety of different languages and
cultures encountered both on the
Iberian Peninsula and Latin America.
expertise in Latin American Studies
from a social science perspective
which will add further depth and
breadth to your degree and permits
specialisation in Latin American Studies
from Year One. Not only will you become
a confident reader, writer and speaker
of Spanish, you will also gain a thorough
understanding of many aspects of
Iberian and Latin American Studies.
We are one of only two departments in the
country where you can study all five of the
Iberian cultures (Spanish, Basque, Catalan,
Galician and Portuguese). We are also
proud of the fact that our degree combines
excellence in both the humanities and the
social sciences in approaches to Latin
American Studies. Teaching throughout all
four years of your degree is informed by this
plurilingual, pluricultural understanding of the
Luso-Hispanic world, and you will have the
opportunity to choose from the wide range
of languages on offer. Most of these languages
can be studied in a range of combinations
with other languages and subjects.
