Q&A: EAR INFECTIONS
Q. What are the common signs and symptoms of an ear infection?
A. A young child may hold, tug at or rub the affected ear. An older child may complain of
pain or that their hearing seems diminished. A child of any age may also have a fever
that accompanies an ear infection. If the ear drum has ruptured parents may also notice
drainage from their child’s ear.
Q. What should parents do if they suspect their child has an
ear infection?
A. Visiting the child’s doctor is the best thing to do when any signs of an ear
infection are present. The doctor can look directly at the child’s ear drum to
determine if there is an infection.
Q. What treatment options are available?
A. Many ear infections are viral and do not require an antibiotic. The age of the
child and the severity of the infection are factors in determining whether
antibiotic or time and pain control are the appropriate treatment options.
In some cases, when a child has multiple ear infections in a short period of
time, the placement of ear tubes may be recommended to help decrease
further infections.
Q. How can parents reduce the risk of ear infection?
A. Breast feeding and routine vaccinations, including the pneumococcal and
influenza vaccines, may help decrease the risk of ear infection in children.
The risk for ear infection increases with exposure to tobacco smoke, pacifier
use and lying down flat to drink a bottle.
welcome
By Shane Goodman, shane@dmcityview.com
There’s something
in a name
We have written about he RUNorwalk event for several years
now in this magazine, and I continue to be amazed by its
growth. There is no shortage of road races to compete in
around central Iowa, so the organizers have a challenging task to draw
competitors in year after year. But after 12 years of doing a project, you
tend to learn a thing or two.
Although there are other great races to
compete in, none has such a unique name.
One has to look at it a few times to clearly
seen the RUN and the WALK. Only a
town with the name Korun could possibly
come up with a name as clever, with something
like WALKorrun. But it just doesn’t
seem to work as well, does it?
I was curious who first came up with the
name RUNorwalk, so I asked around. Julie
Manatrey told me that she believed it was
Dave Paulsen, Dr. Donna Grant’s husband,
who thought of RUNorwalk for Run or
Walk. Manatrey, along with Chad Stevens,
came up with the idea for the event and carried it forward with support
from Tom Fish, Donna Grant, Bridget Lottman, Jeff Wren and Nancy
Kuehl. With that in mind, I offer a few words of caution: Don’t play
Dave Paulsen in Scrabble.
Regardless of where the name came from, this event allows participants
to compete in a 5-kilometer or an 8-kilometer race with proceeds
helping to benefit the community. And, yes, participants can RUN or
WALK in the 5-kilometer.
Organizers have changed things up a bit this year, adding improvements
to ensure that the race continues to draw in top athletes and
newcomers from both Norwalk and beyond.
Haven’t participated before? Give it a try. Run or walk. There’s no
reason not to.
Thanks for reading.
RUNorwalk
POPULAR EVENT RETURNS
FOR ITS 13TH YEAR
A large group of runners at the start of a 2012 RUNorwalk race. This year’s 5-kilometer and 8-kilometer races will take place on May 11.
By Melissa Walker
The RUNorwalk event will celebrate
its 13th year with the return of the
Isiserettes Drill & Drum Corp. and a
new medal award system for participants.
The event will be held May 11. The 5-kilometer
and 8-kilometer races start at 8:30 a.m.
at Norwalk High School, 1201 North Ave., and
run by Holmes Chevrolet, Lakewood and the
Legacy development before they end back at
the high school.
4 Norwalk Living APRIL | 2013 www.iowalivingmagazines.com/norwalk
The 5-kilometer race is a run or run/walk
event and can be timed or untimed.
Joe Nguyen, a member of the race committee
and owner of Anytime Fitness, the
starting line sponsor for the event, says the
5-kilometer race, which was added last year, is
an important component of the event.
“It really brings in the beginning crowd
because it brings in a lot of people who want
to participate but are hesitant because of the
longer race distance,” he says.
RUNorwalk started 13 years ago as a way
for the Norwalk Chamber of Commerce to
raise money for the programs and activities
members wanted to do in the community.
Most years, the Chamber has donated a
portion of its proceeds toward a nonprofit
group in the community or for scholarships for
Norwalk students, says Deb Mineart, executive
director of the Chamber.

The Isiserettes Drill & Drum Corp. will return to the RUNorwalk event this year. The
group will perform at the start and finish lines.
Photo submitted
Last year the event raised
$500 for the Norwalk food pantry.
Again this year, a portion of
the proceeds will go toward the
food pantry. Mineart also encourages
those who attend the event
to bring a canned, nonperishable
food item for the food pantry.
In previous years, the chamber
members have given the city of
Norwalk $1,000 for its parks and
recreation department to host a
movie night for the community
and for a plaque to go inside the
high school’s new performing arts
center.
“We try to pick something
to give back to the community,”
Mineart says.
She says the Chamber hopes
to raise more money this year for
the food pantry than it did last
year.
Mineart says the money raised
from the RUNorwalk event goes
toward events the Chamber hosts
that include the Business Expo and
to maintain the Chamber office.
“It really helps the overall
operation of the chamber to be
in the Norwalk community,” she
says.
RUNorwalk usually draws
about 250 participants. Last year
was the biggest attendance year
for the event, Mineart says. There
were 343 race participants, 197 of
whom were from Norwalk. The
remaining 146 were from outside
of Norwalk, and the race drew
participants from Omaha, Neb.;
Minneapolis, Minn.; Nashville,
Tenn.; and Fayetteville, Ark.
“It’s a Norwalk event, but we
also get quite a few people (from)
outside of Norwalk,” Mineart says.
“It’s just been a great fundraiser
for the chamber. We usually have
a really good turnout.”
Organizers in the past learned
early on that weather plays a big
role in the turnout. Holding the
race before the Dam 2 Dam event
in Des Moines helped because
many racers use RUNorwalk
as a training tool. Participation
increased, as well as attendance by more serious runners,
once the Chamber began offering cash prizes for the top
finishers.
Medals will be awarded this year to the first- place male
and female winners in each age group rather than prizes. Age
groups are organized in five-year increments. The top three
overall place winners also will receive cash and a medal.
Organizers say when they began to offer medals, it
increased the number of professional runners who participated
in the event.
This will be the third year that Juliana Stahle, 17, has participated
in RUNorwalk. She’s a member of Norwalk High
School’s track and cross country teams. Last year she placed
third overall in the 5-kilometer race.
“I ran it the year before, and you have to run a race for
P.E., and I decided to do it,” she says. “I had so much fun that
I decided to do it again.”
The Norwalk school district gives students the option of
running in the event rather than taking its physical education
final.
Stahle, a junior at Norwalk, says she’ll choose to run the
5-kilometer race again this year rather than take her P.E.
final. She says the event is always a lot of fun.
“People should try it no matter what, even if you don’t
run,” she says. “You can walk it, too, if you want or if you
don’t run because they cheer people on.”
The Isiserettes Drill & Drum Corp. is back again this
year. They will perform at the start and finish lines.
“The runners really like that,” Mineart says.
Nguyen says the Isiserettes “always pump
up the crowd and get our participants ready
for the race.”
Nguyen always brings a group of
Anytime Fitness members to run in the
event.
In addition, the Norwalk High School
cheerleaders will be cheering on and
encouraging runners at each kilometer
marker.
There is a Kids Fun Run for participants
ages 8 and younger. That race will begin
about 9:15 or 9:30 a.m. after most of the
racers have finished with the longer races.
The races are open to participants of every
age — some people even push strollers.
Registration is not required for the kids’
race, but it is necessary for the 5-kilometer
or 8-kilometer races. Participants can register
up to the day of the event. However,
they are only guaranteed a participation
T-shirt if they register before May 3. To register,
download the registration form from
health Q&A
Q: How can I keep from falling
and improve my balance?
A: Our ability to maintain balance declines with age, and falling can be a major
problem as a result. Accidents are the sixth leading cause of death in persons
older than 75, with falls being the leading factor. There are several things that can
influence the possibility of a fall. If you are taking medications, check with your
doctor to see if the medicine could be affecting your balance. Some medicines or
combinations of medicine can cause dizziness or have other side effects that may
increase your risk. Home hazards, such as loose rugs, poorly lit areas and phone
or electrical cords in or near high traffic areas, can affect your safety. Utilizing
handrails on stairs and grab bars in the bathtub are good options to help you maintain
your balance. One of the best ways to improve your balance and decrease
your fall risk is to stay active and keep your body strong. There are a variety of
exercises that physical therapists can teach you to specifically help with balance
and fall-related issues. Improving leg strength, balance, coordination and flexibility
may reduce the risk of falls. If you are unsure of where to start with an exercise
program, check with your doctor, and discuss physical therapy as an option.
Accelerated Rehabilitation Centers and our specially trained physical therapists
are committed to reducing fall risk, improving quality of life, and promoting
healthy aging. Our physical therapists will evaluate your specific deficits and
design an individual exercise and balance program for the clinic as well as for
home. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact Accelerated
what’s in your garage?
David Albright, a professional walleye fisherman, shows some of his awards and gear
from sponsors.
Angler envy
Albright talks about being a pro fisherman
By Cady Colosimo
For most of us going to work
means heading into the office
9 to 5 Monday to Friday, but
David Albright is not one of those
people.
Albright’s cubicle is a boat
on a lake, and his coworkers are
walleye. That’s because Albright is
a professional walleye fisherman.
Albright has a real job, too, but
fishing is where his heart is.
Why walleye, as opposed to
bass?
“Because you can eat walleye,”
he laughs.
Albright goes on to explain it’s
also because the region has more
walleye than any other kind of
freshwater fish. When competing
the format is strictly catch-andrelease,
but when Albright isn’t
competing and gets to keep his
fish, he prefers to eat them fried.
With more than 20 top 20 finishes
in tournaments all across the
Midwest, Albright is not just a pro
fisherman, but a successful topranked
one at that. For example, in
2003 he caught the biggest walleye
in a tournament in North America.
Contact Darren at 953-4822 ext. 304 or darren@dmcityview.com to recommend
someone for an upcoming issue of “What’s In Your Garage?”
He’s even got sponsors to provide
him with gear. Lund has supplied
him with a top-of-the-line boat and
Mercury outfitted it with a motor
while Scheels gives Albright all the
poles and tackle he can handle.
It’s no fluke that Albright is a
pro. He knew he wanted to be a
pro at the tender age of 6 when
he went fishing for the first time.
Albright grew up in Lakewood
and on Lake Colchester and spent
time working at a marina in Lake
Rathbun, so fishing has always been
in his life. While he likes competing
in — and winning — tournaments,
he really enjoys helping others
catch fish. Albright is also a fishing
guide at Four Season Outfitters.
Under his professional guidance
and three decades of experience,
you’re guaranteed to catch a fish.
He is passionate the sport and
loves to share it with others.
“Getting in the outdoors is
rewarding,” he says.
With society being so technology
obsessed, fishing offers a
chance to get back to basics. No
batteries required.
By Dawn Sagario Pauls
Ginny Kraus was a chemist
for 13 years.
Then her career took a
180-degree turn. When Kraus had
her kids, she became a “homeroom
mom,” volunteering in her
children’s classrooms.
“I just fell in love with the
atmosphere and the act of teaching,”
says Kraus, who went back
to school for her teaching degree,
focusing on a reading teaching
endorsement.
“This feels more natural,” she
says, as she sits in her classroom at
Don Oviatt Elementary School in
Norwalk. Kraus is one of four Title
I reading teachers at the school.
Kraus does “reading interventions”
with a total of 28 students,
kindergarten through second grade.
She works with students when
needed, helping to bring their reading
skills up to their grade level.
They cover areas including phonics,
reading in text, word building and
skill work, she explains. She works
with groups of two to four students
for 30 minutes throughout the day.
Their efforts to catch kids
early, in kindergarten, “has really
been successful,” she says.
Title I reading has undergone
many changes over the years,
Kraus explains. Those include
higher expectations of the students,
greater use of technology,
more expectations of parents and
a shift in the education of the
teachers themselves.
In terms of technology, Kraus
says they’re using various means
Photos by Dawn Sagario-Pauls
Ginny Kraus is a Title 1 reading teacher
at Don Oviatt Elementary School.
to deliver lessons which also serve
as learning tools. For example,
she’s currently running a pilot program
with iPads. The aim is “more
student engagement, higher-level
thinking and applying their phonics”
and other skills they’re learning,
she says.
Teachers communicate daily
with parents through information
in their child’s folder, and parents
are expected to work with their
kids on their reading skills every
night, Kraus says.
Title I reading teachers are
also learning to go about their own
jobs differently. They’re now looking
more at the underlying causes
of reading problems, Kraus says,
and considering other strategies
and direct instruction.
Also, Oviatt recently began
participating in the “Everybody
Wins!” program, which pairs community
volunteers with students.
Volunteers meet with students
once a week and read aloud and
talk with them.
What do you like best about Mrs. Kraus?
Roberto Fortin:
“She does a good
job with me, and
she’s beautiful and
lets us do iPads.”
John Henry
Clark:
“She helps me
understand
words.”
Savannah
Welch:
“She reads us
books.”
Kylie Frank:
“She helps me
a lot.”

insurance advice
By Mike Lane
Are all insurance
agencies alike?
Different agents offer different services
By Mike Lane, Lane Insurance Agency, Inc.
To get the best deal on insurance,
many people consult
and insurance agent or broker.
Did you know that there are
different kinds of insurance agents
and brokers — and the one you
choose can make a big difference
in the type of service you get and
the choices you’re offered? Here’s
the difference:
Captive agents and brokers.
Captive agents work with a
specific insurance company, and as
part of their business agreement
with that company, they can offer
company’s insurance products.
That can put the captives at a competitive
disadvantage as they only
offer their company’s products.
Independent agents and
brokers. Independent agents and
brokers can offer products from
many insurance companies. This
helps them better serve your interests,
as they can review multiple
options to find a policy and rate
that is right for you. Insurance rates
vary from company to company.
Independent agents can put together
a customized insurance plan.
If you’re ready to contact an
independent agent to talk about
saving money on car insurance,
here are a few things to consider:

changed recently? Many factors
determine auto insurance rates,
not just vehicle year, make, model
and body type. If you’ve recently
moved, gotten married, had a
birthdate or experienced a similar
life milestone, mention this to an
independent agent. You may be
eligible to save money on your car
insurance.

don’t always need the same level
of physical damage coverage on
older cars as on newer ones. Lane
Insurance helps you determine the
value of the vehicle and when to
consider reducing coverage.

vehicle that also needs coverage?
If you have a motorcycle, boat
or RV, you might save money by
having it covered by the same
company that insures your auto
and home.
Another plus to working with
an independent agent is his or her
ability to offer guidance for all your
insurance needs — auto, home,
life, health, business and more. We
can customize a package of policies
just for you.
At Lane Insurance, we represent
many A+ rated companies
that offer extremely competitive
rates such as IMT, Met Life, Allied,
EMC, Auto Owners, Safeco, State
Auto, Wellmark, Nationwide Life
and Progressive. We are able to
shop your rates within our agency
for both new business and renewals,
to insure you are getting the
best rates available.
MAYOR’S MOMENT
April is designated as Earth Month and, specifically, April 22nd as Earth Day. The purpose
of doing this is to enhance the public’s awareness on a variety of environmental issues such
as air pollution, water pollution, habitat destruction, sustainable energy, species losses and
environmental policies. One of the focus points associated with Earth Month is exercising the
“3R” policy – Recycle, Reduce and Reuse. I am going to talk specifically about recycling as one
way for all of us to help preserve this “ball” that we live on for future generations.
I have noticed on Wednesdays that there are lots of items sticking up out of trash carts that
could have just as easily been put in the recycling cart I read an article last week that stated
Doug Pierce,
Mayor
that 50-75% of all the “stuff” that is taken to landfills is recyclable material. It only takes a few seconds to separate
recyclable materials from that which is not. By doing just that, we would make a tremendous impact on reducing that
50% plus of recyclable stuff that show up at landfills.
All of you received a “green flyer” with your water bill recently that designates May 4th as our Annual Norwalk Spring
Cleaning Day and June 8th as Electronic & Disposal Day. Items that can be disposed of on May 4th in addition to the
normal trash also include tires and hazardous wastes if you drop them off at Public Works. We are also providing a way
for you to dispose of those Electronics and Appliances you want to get rid of without “stickers” by dropping those items
off at Public Works on June 8th. I hope that this opportunity provided by the City will motivate all to dispose properly.
My point to all of this is for all of us to be good stewards of the land by being conscientious of what and how we
discard items that could just as easily be recycled versus sending them to landfills.
SPRING CLEANING FOR SAFETY
As spring approaches thoughts turn to cleaning up from the long winter, making repairs around the home and enjoying
the outdoors. Keeping a few safety thoughts in mind will help you make your spring experience much more enjoyable.
NORWALK SPRING CLEANING WEEK...
Now that Spring has officially arrived, it’s time to toss open the windows and let some fresh air in. It’s also time to get
rid of that STUFF you’ve been hanging onto that’s been cluttering your house.
Norwalk’s Spring Cleaning week kicks off on Saturday, May 4 with a Household Hazardous Waste and Tire Drop Off

household. A list of accepted items can be found on the City’s website at www.norwalk.iowa.gov.
Beginning Monday, May 6 at 6:00am residents should have their STUFF placed at the curb for pick up. This includes

lengths, and dried LATEX paint. Waste Management will still be collecting trash and yard waste on your normal collection
day.
HAPPY SPRING AND HAPPY
MOWING!
Time to dust off your lawn mower, tune-it up and get ready for the mowing season.
As you mow, please remember to direct grass clippings back towards your lawn and

great nutrients found in lawn clippings. Clippings left on impervious surfaces are
washed down the storm drain and into the closest creek or stream. Once there, nature
works to decompose the grass clippings and while doing so depletes the oxygen in
water which fish and plants need to survive. Keeping grass clippings out of the street
is a simple step we can all do to keep Iowa’s waters clean and healthy. Happy spring
and happy mowing!
pets
By Dr. Jen Emerson-Mathis
Pet parasites don’t take
vacations
Pets share our homes, our kitchens, and, in some cases, even our
beds. Unfortunately, they might also be sharing some unwanted
guests — worms. Unlike fleas that sometimes give us a break during
colder weather, these parasites can cause problems all year long.
Most people don’t realize it, but most all puppies and kittens are born
with roundworms, hookworms or even both. Adult pets aren’t immune
to these parasites either. Adult female worms shed enormous numbers
of eggs into the soil. It’s not unusual for more than 200,000 eggs to be
shed every single day per female worm. Eventually these parasites cause
bloody, runny stool or vomiting. But beyond their immediate effects on
the animals, there is an even more sinister side. Both roundworms and
hookworms are zoonotic, meaning that they can be passed to humans.
Children are especially susceptible and in extreme cases, young children
have lost an eye to roundworm infections.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that almost 14
percent of the U.S. population is infected with roundworms. That’s
nearly 40 million people. It is for this reason that the CDC recommends
dogs and cats have veterinary laboratory stool tests every six months.
Our pets are a big part of our lives, and we want to share as much
as we can with them. Following your veterinarian’s guidelines could
mean that you can share a much longer, healthier life together. For more
details, check out our website at www.fampetvet.com or call us.
health Q&A
Q: How can I ease my spring
allergy symptoms?
A: Many people see the start of spring as a welcome change. But with the
warm breeze comes airborne pollen and mold spores. And if you suffer from
seasonal allergies, you probably feel them with every inhale. The allergens
send the body’s immune system into overdrive, leading symptoms with your
allergies such as sneezing, a stuffy nose and itching.
Spring is typically considered to be a tree pollen season. Trees cause
allergies because they produce small pollen cells that are light and dry and
can be carried far by the spring breeze. Eleven types of trees are common
triggers for your allergies in the spring, according to the American Academy
of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology: oak, Western red cedar, sycamore,
maple, elm, birch, ash, cypress, walnut, hickory, poplar.
These trees release pollen around the same time every year. If you’re
allergic to any of them, when their pollen is in the air you’ll start sneezing,
experience congestion and feel itchy eyes, ears, nose, and mouth.
You’ll get some relief from spring allergy symptoms on rainy or cloudy
days, or when there’s no wind to make the pollen airborne.
Your best defense from spring allergies is to keep your doors and
windows closed, use allergy filters on your air conditioning unit, wash your
clothes and take a shower after you’ve been exposed to pollen and mold
spores and avoid doing yard work or exercising outdoors on days when
pollen counts are high.
Banding together
Area churches invite author to Norwalk
THIS

By Rebecca Bowen
The month of April has
apparently been designated
the month when churches
of Norwalk band together and
invite guests to come and speak
about life experiences, as well as
plan events to help and give back
to the community.
Spread the Word
Have an upcoming event or
church news you would like to
announce? Send information to
darren@dmcityview.com.
Bill Wiese is coming to Norwalk on April
18 to discuss his book “23 Minutes in
Hell.”
As a part of the ACTS Network,
which stands for Area Churches
Serving Together, Norwalk
United Methodist, Crossroads
Community and Fellowship
Community Church will invite
New York Times best-selling author
Bill Wiese to hold seminars on
Sunday, April 28 at 10 a.m. and
6 p.m. to discuss his book, “23
Minutes in Hell.” In his memoir,
Weise recalls how in November
of 1998, he had “an out-of-body
experience where he believes he
entered the gates of Hell.” His
experiences led him to transition
into full-time ministry and travel
with his wife to share his beliefs,
which he used to create their
ministry Soul Choice Ministries, as
well as the gospel that he has now
dedicated his life to. The services
will be held in the Norwalk High
School Fine Arts Auditorium. His
book is available to purchase for
$1 in the Fellowship Café.
“He’s been on the New York
Times best-sellers list,” explains
Jenni Whitaker, who is the print
communications coordinator at
Fellowship Community Church.
“The fact that he’s coming to central
Iowa is a pretty neat thing, and
I know that Bill’s experiences are
going to be very life-changing to
hear about.”
This same group of churches
in the ACTS Network will also be
hosting Meals from the Heartland
on Saturday, April 20 from 9 a.m.
until 3 p.m.
“It’s really fun to see all that
they do when they come,” recalls
Carol Harris of Norwalk United
Methodist. “We fill the meals, package
them, shrink wrap them and box
it all up. It’s great to be able to all
work together on that, and everyone
throughout the community is
encouraged to sign up and come be
a part of such a special thing.”
Meals from the Heartland is a
non-profit organization designed
to package and deliver meals to
starving people in the United
States and around the world. For
more information or to participate
in this event, contact any of the
churches in the ACTS Network.
health Q&A
Q: I sometimes see black spots
before my eyes. What could
they be?
A: Vitreous floaters are one of the most common causes of this symptom.
They are small specks or particles within the
vitreous, which is clear, jelly-like fluid that fills
most of the inside of your eyes. They may
appear in various shapes or sizes; often
they may look like threadlike strands or
cobwebs. Because they are within your
eyes, they tend to move as your eyes
move.
Most floaters are not harmful and
rarely limit vision. However, some floaters
can be indications of more serious conditions
such as retinal break or detachment. If you
have a sudden increase in the number and frequency of floaters and/or
the floaters are accompanied by flashes of light or blurred vision, seek
immediate care with your eye care provider.
Q: What are fibroma and
papilloma?
A: Fibroma and papilloma are names of two common benign growths,
or tumors, that occur in the mouth. The so-called “irritation fibroma”
is the most common. It is generally caused by incessant sucking or biting
on the tongue, check or lip. The
fibroma is a smooth surfaced, pink,
mushroom shaped growth with a stalk
that appears on the affected surface.
A papilloma is also mushroom shaped
but has an irregular, white, pebbly
surface.
A papilloma is a growth that ears
in its own, not as a result of irritation.
A papilloma is similar to a wart
on your skin and, can be caused by
a virus. A fibroma is likely to appear,
for instance, opposite a small space in
the teeth through which tissue can be
sucked. If that’s the cause of a fibroma, your dentist may be able to fit
you with an appliance that can fill that open area.
Fibroma and papilloma are benign tumors; your dentist will generally
not send them of a biopsy. The most common technique for removal is
excision. Whenever you notice any abnormal growth in your mouth, see
your dentist as soon as possible.
health Q&A
Q: What causes allergies?
A: Allergies come in many forms. The most common causes of allergies
are particles in the air. Hay fever is the most common allergic disease.
Dark circles under the eyes or postnasal drip may also accompany hay
fever. Allergy symptoms include itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, runny,
stuffy or itchy nose and fatigue. The symptoms are a lot like cold symptoms,
but they usually last longer.
You can often discover the cause of an allergy by noting when the
symptoms occur. Symptoms that occur at the same time each year, especially
during spring, early summer or early fall are often caused by tree,
grass or weed pollen. Allergies that persist all year long may be due to
dust, mites in household dust, cockroaches, mold spores or animal dander.
An animal allergy is often easy to detect: symptoms clear up when
you stay away from the animal or its bedding.
Allergies seem to run in families. Parents with hay fever often have
children with allergies. Hay fever may develop in children, but is more
common in teens and adults.
If practical, avoid the substance that causes allergy attacks. Allergy
shots may help control symptoms of allergies and asthma or may reduce
the risk of having an anaphylactic reaction.
Contact your physician if allergy symptoms worsen over time and/or
home treatment doesn’t help. Your physician may recommend medication
or a stronger medication if already on medication or allergy shots.
Q: Can chiropractic care
relieve neck pain?
A: According to a recent study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, manual
therapy is highly effective in treating patients suffering with neck pain and
restricted range of motion.
Neck pain affects 10 - 15 percent of people and is particularly common
among middle-aged men and women.
One hundred and eighty-three patients who had suffered with
neck pain for at least a two week period participated in a recent study,
recently conducted in the Netherlands.
The patients were divided into three treatment groups. Patients in
the manual therapy group were adjusted in order to reduce restrictions
in the neck’s range of motion; physical therapy patients participated in
30-minute exercise sessions two times per week; and patients who were
under the care of a general practitioner were given advice on recovery,
self-care, and ergonomics.
Researchers found that the chiropractic group showed a success rate
two times higher than the patients in the general practitioner group.
Recovery rates were 68 percent among manual therapy patients; 51
percent among physical therapy patients and 36 percent for patients in
the general practitioner group.
Patients in the manual therapy group also had 50 percent less absences
from work due to pain than the other groups and demonstrated better
results in all outcome measures than the other two groups.
Chiropractors commonly administer manual therapy in order to
increase neck flexibility and to reduce pain.
Chocolate chip pie
Baking honors the memory of her mother
By Marchelle Walter Brown
Most people have childhood
memories of coming home
to the smell of cookies
fresh from the oven. However,
when my mind goes back to my
mother’s kitchen, I can smell the
aroma of fresh-baked pies and see
them lining the kitchen counter.
Sometimes there would be
one or two and sometimes six or
seven. My mom was Hilda (Dykes) Walter, and not only did she bake
pies for us to enjoy at home but, more often than not she was making
them for company dinners and family reunions or donating them to
church dinners, funeral dinners and many school fundraisers. Sometimes
I would wake up in the morning and there would be pies galore, and my
dad would say, “I guess your mom couldn’t sleep last night.” Yes, she
even baked pies in the middle of the night. The art of pie-baking just
seemed to come natural for her.
I, on the other hand, had to work at it. I had never baked a pie in my
life until after my mom passed away in 1994, and then I became fixated
with carrying on her pie-baking tradition. In keeping with tradition, I still
use my mom’s pie plates and my grandmother’s marble rolling pin. The
process really isn’t about duplicating her pie; it’s about honoring her
memory. Like my mom, making pie is like therapy for me, and every one
I make warms my heart and makes me feel closer to her .
Chocolate chip pie
Mom’s Pie Cr ust
3 cups flour
1 cup lard (I use Crisco)
½ tsp salt
6 Tbsp milk
Directions
1. Blend flour, salt and lard until
crumbly. Toss lightly with milk until
flour is incorporated.
2. Divide dough into two balls and
roll each ball out onto a lightly
floured surface, periodically sprinkling
with more flour. Keep your
rolling pin clean by rubbing a little
flour over it while rolling out crust.
Trick: I roll my crust onto waxed
paper or pastry boards and then
place my pie pan upside down on
the crust and “flip” the crust into
the pan. It just works better that
way for me.
Makes 1 double crust or 2 single
crust pies.
Chocolate Chip Pie
2 eggs
½ cup flour
½ cup sugar
½ cup brown sugar
2 sticks butter (melted and cooled
to room temperature)
1 cup chocolate chips
1 unbaked pie shell
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
2. In large bowl, beat eggs ‘til foamy;
beat in flour, sugar and brown sugar
until well blended.
3. Blend in melted butter. Lightly
stir in chocolate chips.
4. Pour into pie shell and bake for
1 hour.
news brief
Submit briefs to | darren@dmcityview.com
‘Everybody Wins! Iowa’ starts at Oviatt
In early January, a call went out to the Norwalk community asking
for volunteer reading mentors, and there is wonderful news to share.
Beginning in early March, training began for 15 volunteers. On March 12,
these volunteers began working with students who need a little extra
boost — reading and being read to. The school district has been so lucky
in a number of areas, launching this program:
First, the people of Norwalk are always ready to help when called.
Thanks to those who have already volunteered.
Second, it was thought the district was going to start from scratch
on this program; however, a parent in Norwalk, Amanda Fletcher, is the
executive director in a program called “Everybody Wins! Iowa.” This program
is dedicated to increasing children’s success in school through reading
and mentoring experiences. Thanks to Amanda and her staff who are implementing
“Everybody Wins! Iowa” at Oviatt. They train and do background
checks on the volunteers and help guide this exceptional program.
And third, because “Everybody Wins! Iowa” requires funding to
implement in a school, the district is very grateful to Kathi and Larry
Zimpleman for their donation to get the ball rolling at Oviatt. When
asked if they might consider a donation to help Norwalk elementary
schools get a community reading program off the ground, they were 100
percent behind this educational project. Thanks so much.
In the future, additional funding will be needed to keep this program
going. Grants from different sources are being actively pursued.
Additional volunteers will be needed in the future; but for now,
is thrilled with the 15 people working with the kids and wants to get
through the remainder of the school year with these folks with hopes to
expand the program next year.
chamber news
Norwalk Chamber, 981-0619
Are you
training yet?
Annual RUNorwalk set for May 11
By Deb Mineart, Chamber director
As I sit here writing my
April article, the sun is
shining and it is a balmy
40 degrees outside. The snow is
melting, and there is a mention in
the forecast for rain.
I know that I cannot wait to
get outside and do some walking. I
also know that there is a group of
people that will run or walk in any
kind of weather.
No matter if you are just a
fair weather runner or walker or
a fanatic runner or walker, I invite
you to join us for our 13th annual
RUNorwalk event being held May
11. You can register at www.
getmeregistered.com or pick up a
form at City State Bank, Fareway,
Scott’s, Anytime Fitness, doctor
offices, Norwalk Family Dentistry,
Accelerated Rehab, City Hall, Parks
and Rec or at the Norwalk Library.
You can also go on our website at
www.norwalkchamber.org to print
off a form or email the Chamber at
norwalkchamber@msn.com.
Not much for running or walking?
Then we invite you to come to
the Norwalk High School on race
day to cheer on your neighbor,
friend or family member and just
be around to watch the runners
and walkers finish. We also would
like to encourage you to bring a
canned non-perishable food item
to the track on race day to help
the Norwalk Food Pantry.
The Issiserettes will once again
be on hand to pump you up before
the starting pistol goes off, and we
will have some Chamber member
businesses there as well for you to
look at what they have to offer.
This year there will not be
any prizes awarded in the age categories.
Instead we will be awarding
first place medals for the age
categories. So many businesses
have been gracious during the past
12 years offering prizes for our
participants, and we truly appreciated
that. This year we thought we
would try something else by doing
medals. It will be interesting to see
what kind of feedback we will get
by making this change.
So before RUNorwalk gets
here, you have a month to start
training if you haven’t been doing
so already. I look forward to seeing
you at the finish line on May 11.
