Advancing Technological Education and Skills Training
Yves Landry Foundation Academic Award Application and Nomination Form
“To forge an enlightened partnership between industry and
education, train a world-class pool of skilled manufacturing
workers, technicians, technologists and engineers, and secure
technological advantage in a rapidly changing world.”
YVES LANDRY, 1988
G. Yves Landry
1938-1998
In 1938, Yves Landry was born in Thetford Mines, Quebec. From this inauspicious
beginning rose a man of vision who became a giant of the automotive industry.
Educated at Laval, Queens and Columbia Universities, he went on to become
Chairman, President and CEO of Chrysler Canada Ltd. in 1990. He was awarded
many Honourary degrees (Universities of Ottawa, Windsor, McGill, and Laval) and
was invested as an Officer of The Order of Canada on May 14, 1995.
In speeches across Canada, Mr. Landry urged governments and educators to make
our educational system more cost effective and responsive to the demands of our
rapidly evolving economy in order to increase our global competitiveness. He had a
vision of a link forged between industry, education, and government to make a
better society for Canadians. It began to unfold with The Windsor Experiment in
1994.
The Yves Landry Foundation is the embodiment of the vision, principles, and hopes
of the late Yves Landry. Founded in 1998, its goal is to advance technological
education and skills training in order to resolve the skilled labour shortages facing
Canadian industries. The Foundation provides the opportunity for business,
education, and government to, collectively, be part of the solution.

YVES LANDRY FOUNDATION ACADEMIC AWARDS:
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Technological innovation and excellence at the high school, college and university
levels is recognized at the Foundation’s annual STARS Gala which provides the
platform to promote awareness of the skills shortages that Canadian industry will be
facing over the coming decades.
Programs are publicly honoured for their ingenuity and success in front of their
peers and leaders in Canadian manufacturing. Winners of the Yves Landry
Foundation Academic Awards are presented with an award on stage and receive a
monetary gift to further advance their technological education program.
Technological education provides students with an important base on which Canada
can continue to grow and prosper.
The goals of the Foundation are to ensure that:
• Canadian business and employees achieve and sustain top technical status in
the global arena in which we compete
• Mainstream education provides relevant, up-to-date technical education to the
point where business does not need to provide substantial remedial or
supplemental training, or import skilled workers
• Barriers to life-long education are eliminated
• Choosing a career in technology is as favourably considered by students,
parents, educators and governments as any other career path
• Young people are encouraged to enter apprenticeships, co-operative education
programs and activities that foster better insight about technology and the
inspiring opportunities available.
If you are interested in applying for an Academic Award, or you know an
institution or community group that should be nominated, please use the form
located in the back of this information booklet.
In order to be considered for an award, all projects must have been
operational for a minimum of two (2) years.

TECHNICAL RENEWAL
Level: High School
Patron: The Woodbridge Group
The influence of technology on our lives increases each and every day. The fact that the majority of
the human race prefers to learn by doing will never change. High school technology courses and
classic trade shops not only offer students a preferred way to learn, but also lay an important
foundation for skills and advanced technical education. This award will be presented to the high
school that values classic and advanced technology as evidenced by their efforts to improve and
expand technical offerings.
OUTSTANDING YOUTH
APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
Level: High School
This award is for high schools, school boards or community based initiatives that excel in promoting
youth apprenticeship programs and introducing students and their parents to the skills necessary for
the future. High school is where decisions are made about future careers and higher education.
Apprenticeship is a proven way to directly introduce students to the workplace and develop valuable
skills for a future in technology.
PROGRESS TOWARD
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Level: College or University Patron: Shell Canada Limited
This award recognizes the college, university or post-secondary student group that most successfully
incorporates the concept of sustainable development into its programs or projects. Sustainable
development means understanding society’s demand for socially sensitive, economically viable and
environmentally responsible products and manufacturing processes, and acting on that
understanding. It is a case of taking action today with tomorrow in mind. Applicants who believe their
program or project is contributing to creating a truly sustainable society are encouraged to apply.
TECHNICAL CAREER
AWARENESS
Level: High School
This award is for the institution that best promotes to students and parents the career opportunities in
a technical field. A successful technical career awareness initiative typically provides teachers and
guidance counsellors with curriculum based information on growth industries, salaries, the
importance of math, science, technology and languages in the global economy, and represents in a
balanced manner, the advantages of all post-secondary technical training options. Applicants in this
award category should be able to show that the career awareness initiative is guided by a strategy,
and how it is implemented.
