2011 Season Outlook 2011 Season Outlook
The Renegades return with a strong core of experienced sophomores. “Our pitching staff gained valuable experience
last season and our younger guys will follow their lead this season. The sophomores need to set the tone because they
know what it takes and have been there,” said Coach Russell.
Offensively, the Renegades are full of newcomers after losing nine sophomore starters from last season, and will rely
heavily on team-oriented situational baseball. “Selfless team at-bats are what we need in order to have the best chance
to be successful this season. We are going to be a scrappy team by finding a way to get on base, moving runners over and
running the bases the right way. We’ll be very good at executing the details,” said Coach Russell with confidence.
George Asmus was a spot starter but really, he was the main horse out of the pen for the Renegades in 2010. Amus was
second on the team last year in appearances (17) and fourth on the team in strikeouts (35). He earned Honorable
Mention for the Coast-Pacific Conference in 2010. In 2011, Asmus will take the ball primarily as a starter but may see
some time as a reliever on the field as well. In the 2010 playoffs, he appeared in 4 games, and earned the victory in relief
against Modesto Junior College in the Regional playoff held at Ohlone College. Asmus has already signed a letter of
intent to attend the University of Washington in 2012.
Joining Fontaine and Asmus will be a group of sophomores that bring experience and a hard nose attitude to the mound
this season. Jordan Camacho (Arroyo High), Ryan Devencenzi (West High), Alika Pruett (Kamehameha High), Brandon
Arata (Dublin High), Cody Honea (Enterprise High), Cody Wilson (Newark Memorial High), and Mark Mercer (Leigh
High) will all see ample time on the bump this year. This group of pitchers helped lead one of the deepest bullpens in the
state last year. Camacho, Devencenzi, Pruett, and Mercer will see some spot starts in the 2011 season as well.
The supporting cast for the 2011 season will be a group of very talented freshmen that will strive to continue the tradition
of excellence on the mound at Ohlone. Scott Benton (Washington High), Joel Deporte (Washington High), David Hart
(Livermore High), Sheldon Shishido (Waiakea High), Ian Davis (Monte Vista High), Michael Rogers (Irvington High),
Francisco Leon (James Logan), Alex Flores (Tracy High), and Michael Slifer (Foothill High) will all compete together to
help Ohlone on another championship run.
RENEGADE PITCHING PREVIEW
Ohlone Pitchers
The 2011 Ohlone Renegade pitching staff will be lead by a group heavily dominated by sophomores. Ohlone returns
with 13 pitchers from last season, 9 of which earned appearances in the regular season and playoffs during the State
Championship run last season. Last year’s team was top 5 in the state in strikeouts (355), top 10 in opponent’s batting
average (.253), #1 in the state for innings pitched (328.1), and top 20 in the state for team earned run average (4.11).
Sophomores Matt Fontaine (West High) and George Asmus (Foothill High) will lead the charge this 2011 season.
Matt Fontaine was the number 3 starter from last season and had an outstanding freshman campaign. He went 6-2 on
the year with a 4.31 ERA and was second on the team with 75 strikeouts. At season’s end, Fontaine got well-deserved
2nd Team All Coast-Pacific Conference honors. In the 2010 playoffs, he won a Super Regional game over Chabot
College and also started the State Championship game against the College of San Mateo. Fontaine has already signed
a letter of intent to attend Fresno State University after he concludes his time at Ohlone.
