Ohio State University, Columbus (corner of Lane Avenue and Olentangy River Road)
TIME/EVENTS: Session 1—Thursday, 3:00 p.m.; Session 2—Friday, 10:00 a.m.; Session 3—Friday, 6:30
p.m.; Session 4—Saturday, 10:00 a.m.; Session 5—Saturday, 5:00 p.m. (complete schedule is on page 1
ADMISSION: All-session and single-session tickets are currently available at the Ohio State University Athletic
Ticket Office, located in the southeast corner of the Jerome Schottenstein Center. All-session tickets are $40
each and single-session tickets are $10 each. There are additional processing fees for on-line and credit card
orders. For more information, contact the OSU Athletic Ticket Office at 1-800-GO-BUCKS, or log onto the ticket
office web site at www.hangonsloopy.com.
MEDIA CREDENTIALS: Fax requests as soon as possible to Bob Goldring, OHSAA Director of Information, at
(614) 267-1677. Information will be posted on the OHSAA web site (www.ohsaa.org) listing those outlets that
have been approved for credentials. Once on the home page of the web site, go to “OHSAA News & Media,” and
the information will be available in that section. The approved wrestling list will be posted by 4:00 Tuesday.
Some credentials have been mailed ahead of time to those media outlets who normally cover the entire state
tournament. Those who do not have their credentials mailed will pick them up at the media entrance to the
arena (Northeast Rotunda, enter the Fred Taylor Room). The deadline for submitting a request is 12 noon on
Tuesday.
PARKING: With Ohio State classes in session and some lots not available during restricted hours, parking will be
at a premium. Parking for the media in designed lots is limited and not everyone who is covering the event can
be accommodated with special parking. Media parking passes have been mailed to many daily newspapers that
annually cover the tournament along with radio and television stations that annually cover the tournament and
have additional equipment to carry into the arena. Parking for all other media outlets is free and on a first-come,
first-served basis in lots around the arena.
Fans and media members without a pass are highly encouraged to visit the Ohio State Transportation and
Parking web site at www.tp.ohio-state.edu/alerts/OHSAA/ohsaawrestling.shtml.
EIGHT IS GREAT AT THE SCHOTT: This will be the eighth year the tournaments will be held at The Ohio
State University’s Value City Arena at the Jerome Schottenstein Center. Capacity is approximately 15,800 for the
first four rounds and 16,300 for the finals when more floor seats become available for the three-mat layout. The
tournament was held at Wright State University’s Nutter Center from 1991-98. OSU was the home for the state
tourney from 1959-69 and again from 1971-89, with most of those tournaments held at St. John Arena.
Matches will occur concurrently on 10 mats (up from a high of eight mats at Wright State) during the first two
sessions, and the championship matches will take place concurrently on three mats during the fifth session,
which begins at 5:20 on Saturday following the Parade of Champions.
The three-day, five-session attendance total last year was 71,206, while the record of 75,582 was set in 2003.
MORE TOURNAMENT INFO: Six-hundred seventy-two wrestlers from 306 schools will participate in 1,260
matches to help determine state champions in 14 weight classes in each of the three divisions this weekend. The
number of matches increased in 2005 when a seventh-eighth place match was added in each weight class.
PALMER LOOKING FOR NO. 4: Lakewood St. Edward (Division I) 140-pounder Lance Palmer will attempt
to become the 15th wrestler in Ohio history to win four state championships. His previous titles came at 103, 112
and 125. Palmer pinned all four of his opponents last year, has pinned six straight foes at the state tourney and
nine of the 12 he has faced in three years. His closest match was a 5-1 win over Massillon Perry’s Chris Hartley
in the 2004 112-pound quarterfinals (he beat Hartley 5-0 in the 2003 103-pound semis). Last year, Massillon
Perry 145-pounder Dustin Schlatter won his fourth state title and joined his brother C.J. in becoming the second
set of brothers to accomplish that feat, joining Jim (1979-82) and Jeff (1980-83) Jordan from Graham Local.
TEAMS LOOKING FOR NO. 5: Lakewood St. Edward (I), St. Paris Graham Local (II) and Sandusky St. Mary
Central Catholic (III) are looking to make it five consecutive years that the same schools have won state championships
in their respective divisions. In the history of the OHSAA state tournaments in all sports, there have
never been teams repeat as state champions five straight years in sports with at least three divisions. In girls track
& field, Cleveland Heights (I), Cleveland Heights Beaumont (II) and North Robinson Colonel Crawford (III)
each won three straight titles between 1990 and 1992 (although Beaumont tied with Springfield Shawnee for the
‘92 crown), and in swimming & diving, Cincinnati Ursuline Academy (girls I), Gates Mills Hawken (girls II) and
Cincinnati St. Xavier (boys) won three straight titles between 2000 and 2002.
St. Edward is looking for its 22nd state championship and 10th in a row, which would tie its own state record
when the school won 10 straight between 1978 and 1987. Graham Local is seeking its eighth state championship
and sixth straight and St. Mary is after its seventh state title and fifth consecutive.
TOURNAMENT HISTORY: As mentioned, this is the 69th year for the OHSAA state wrestling tournaments.
The following is a divisional breakdown of the tournament over the years:
1938-70 — OHSAA one-class tournament format
2005 REVIEW: 68th Annual State Wrestling Tournaments, Feb. 24, 25 and 26, 2005, Value City Arena in the
Jerome Schottenstein Center, The Ohio State University, Columbus.
A new year brought the same results at the state tournaments. For the fourth consecutive year, the same
three schools captured state championships as Lakewood St. Edward (Division I), St. Paris Graham Local (II)
and Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic (III) took home the gold trophies.
Division I: St. Edward’s title was its 21st overall and ninth consecutive, and the Eagles won the championship
in record style. Their 209.5 points set an all-time scoring record for all divisions, breaking the mark of 203 set
by Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit in the same division in 1985. With seven wrestlers in the finals, St. Edward also
threatened the record of six individual champs in one year set in 1951 by Cleveland West, but just three Eagles
won championships. Massillon Perry was runner-up for the third straight year with 77.5 points.
Leading the titlists for St. Edward was junior Lance Palmer at 125. He won his third consecutive championship,
finished the season 33-0 and defeated all four of his tourney foes by pin. Other Eagle champions were
sophomore Sean Nemac at 135 and senior Nick Marcellino at 215. One of the school's runners-up was defending
champion Shawn Harris, a sophomore, who fell in the 112 finals.
Besides St. Edward's showing, the other highlight of the division was the championship won by Massillon Perry
senior Dustin Schlatter at 145. Not only did he become the state's 14th four-time champion, but he also joined
his brother, C.P. (Columbus St. Francis DeSales, 2000-01, and Graham, 2002-03), to become the second set of
brothers to win four championships. The others were Jim (1979-82) and Jeff (1980-83) Jordan from Graham,
where Jeff is currently the head coach.
Also in the division, senior Mike Miller (160) of Uniontown Lake won his third straight championship and
finished 44-0 and Mike Ward (189) of Mayfield won his second. In addition, Wadsworth senior Tim Miller (171)
won a state title and finished 49-0, while Pickerington Central's Josh Horne (140) won his first crown after placing
second in each of the past three seasons.
St. Edward won last week’s district tournament at Toledo Waite and advanced 13 wrestlers to this week’s
state tournament.
Division II: Graham won its seventh Division II championship and fifth in a row. The Falcons had 163 points,
while Pemberville Eastwood had its best showing ever when it placed second with 99.5 points. Winning titles for
Graham were senior Cameron Doggett (135), who won his third straight championship; senior David Erwin
(160), who won his second title; senior Jason Marshall (215), and freshman Ben Jordan (119). Graham junior
Aaron Hart was seeking his second straight title at 112 but lost in the finals.
Two Division II wrestlers who won titles with unbeaten records were Columbus Hamilton Township senior
Nick Hackett, who was 41-0 at 171, and Clyde junior Matt Guhn, who was 55-0 at 275.
Graham won last week’s district tournament at Goshen and advanced 12 wrestlers to this week’s state tournament.
Division III: St. Mary's Division III title was its sixth overall and fourth consecutive. The Panthers had 121.5
points, while Bedford St. Peter Chanel was runner-up for the fourth time in five years with 78.5 points. St. Mary
was led by senior Spencer Dye (189), who won his second straight championship and finished 37-0. Two other
seniors, Corey Opfer at 119 and Brinden Baum at 152, also won titles for the Panthers.
Two others in the division who defended championships were Cuyahoga Heights senior Braxdon Scaletta at
130 and Delta senior Jamison Moss at 145. In addition, two wrestlers who won titles in the division and finished
unbeaten were Bluffton sophomore Josh Falk, who was 44-0 at 135, and Liberty Center senior Wade VanSickle,
who was 48-0 at 275.
Division I for the Eagles, who won Division II championships in 1999 and 2003. Senior center Aisha Jefferson
and senior guard Lindsey Goldsberry each had 10 points for the winners, who forced 21 Mt. Notre Dame
turnovers. Senior center Michelle Jones had 10 points to lead the Cougars, who finished second for the first time.
In the semifinals, Chaminade-Julienne overcame 27 percent field goal shooting by forcing 33 Sylvania
Jefferson added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles. Mt. Notre Dame went on a 12-0 run late in the third
quarter and early in the fourth to push a 34-29 advantage to 46-29 on its way to a 49-37 win over Boardman.
Four players reached double figures for the Cougars, with Jones scoring 14 points and grabbing a division tournament-record
19 rebounds and junior guard Lee Stephens also netting 14 points.
Oak Hills Saturday at Harrison. A win advances the school to the regional semifinals March 7 at Wright State.
and No. 10 Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit (25-3) hung on to defeat No. 5 Columbus Eastmoor Academy (25-3),
43-40. Walsh had built a 14-point second-quarter lead and was up by 10 in the third before Eastmoor rallied. It
was the first state championship for Walsh, which was led by sophomore forward Johnna Zaccari’s 13 points and
10 rebounds. Eastmoor, in the state tournament for the first time, was led by junior guard Cherise Daniel’s 12
set a divisional championship game record when it scored 27 first-quarter points. Junior guard Danielle Collins
had 11 points and senior guard Amanda Coressel 10 for Patrick Henry, which reached the state title game for the
