2006-07 OHSAA SPRING SPORTS SEASON
BASEBALL STATE TOURNAMENTS
REVIEW: 80th Annual State Baseball Tournaments, May 31, June 1 and 2, Columbus Cooper Stadium.
Division I: Fourth-ranked West Chester Lakota West (28-5) scored four runs in the fourth inning and sophomore
Bryan Beaver threw a four-hit shutout to lead the school to a 4-0 win over eighth-ranked Mentor (27-4). It
was the first state title for the Firebirds, while Mentor finished as runner-up for the second time in four years
and was also seeking its first crown. A suicide squeeze and sacrifice fly plated Lakota West’s first two runs and
senior right fielder Tadd Dombart added a two-run triple to complete the scoring. Beaver walked two and struck
out six.
In the semifinals, Lakota West used a three-run third and a four-run fifth to carry it to an 8-2 win over
Cleveland St. Ignatius. Senior right fielder Dane Fienning had a triple and three RBIs and junior center fielder
Jimmy Brenneman had two hits to lead the Firebirds. Mentor defeated Cincinnati Elder, the all-time leader in
state baseball championships with 12, 4-2. Senior second baseman Adam Coughlin had two RBIs, junior designated
hitter Jordan Pratt had two hits and junior Ryan Lavery pitched a complete game four-hitter with 12
strikeouts.
Division II: Second-ranked Canfield (30-3) broke a six-all tie by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth and
held off No. 20 Springfield Kenton Ridge (26-6), 8-6. Both schools were in the state finals for the first time. An
error and a sacrifice fly accounted for the two deciding runs. Senior shortstop Mike Hoelzel had a two-run double
for the Cardinals, who mustered just five hits. Sophomore Jake Kucek pitched an inning-and-a-third of relief
to pick up the win and senior Andrew Turocy retired the Cougars in order in the seventh for the save. Turocy also
had a triple. Three players had two hits apiece for Kenton Ridge, led by senior third baseman Tyler Heskett, who
also doubled and drove in two runs.
In the semifinals, Canfield defeated Sandusky Perkins 4-2 as Hoelzel had two hits and two RBIs. Kenton Ridge
plated a run in the bottom of the eighth to stop Richmond Edison, 2-1. Heskett pitched a complete game threehitter
and struck out 12.
Division III: Heath (22-6) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings and held on to defeat Bloomdale
Elmwood (26-7), 6-3. It was the second state title for the Bulldogs, who also won the 2002 crown. Junior first
baseman Chuck LaRue drove in two runs and had two hits and junior left fielder Nick Jones added two hits to
lead Heath. Junior catcher Nathaniel Fitch had three of Elmwood’s 11 hits. Senior Dusty Elk went the distance
on the mound to pick up the win. Both teams were unranked in the final state coaches poll and Elmwood was in
the state finals for the first time.
In the semifinals, Heath scored a run in the top of the second and held on to stop Cincinnati Madeira, 1-0.
Senior Greg Strausz pitched a complete game three-hitter and drove in the only run and senior third baseman
Kyle Godsell was 3-for-3. Elmwood made a three-run third stand up in its 3-2 win over 2006 state runner-up
Youngstown Ursuline. Senior shortstop Cory Stewart had a three-run triple and junior right fielder Ben Hammer
was 3-for-3.
Division IV: No. 13 Fort Loramie (23-7) scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to carry it to its first
state championship when it stopped ninth-ranked Newark Catholic (24-10), 4-0. Senior Jordan Goldschmidt
had two hits and two RBIs and picked up the win on the mound for the Redskins by hurling the final six innings.
He and starter Andy Long, a junior, held the Green Wave to three hits. Newark Catholic, seeking its second
straight title and seventh overall, finished second for the second time.
In the semifinals, Fort Loramie scored four runs in the fourth inning to carry it to a 4-1 win over Fremont St.
Joseph Central Catholic. Seven different Redskins had hits and four had RBIs. Newark Catholic pounded out 12
hits and Greenwich South Central committed five errors as the Green Wave won 13-0 in five innings. Junior
Division I: Unranked in the final coaches state poll and making its first trip to the state tournament, Hudson
(28-3) scored four runs in the bottom of the first and received shutout pitching from freshman Mindy Meredith
as it defeated top-ranked Elyria (30-4) in the finals, 4-0. Sophomore third baseman Lindsey Bartos had an RBI
double, senior designated hitter Mandy Krutzler an RBI single and freshman catcher Elizabeth Stokes a two-run
double to account for the scoring. Meredith gave up five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Elyria finished
as runner-up for the second straight year and was seeking its second championship.
In the semifinals, Hudson scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and the game-winner in the seventh to
upend No. 3 Pickerington Central, 5-4. Senior centerfielder Beth Cinadr opened the seventh with a triple and
scored the deciding run on an error. Meredith was the winning pitcher, had two hits and had two RBIs for the
gave up four hits and struck out seven to pick up the win on the mound.
Division II: Second-ranked Greenville (31-4) made its first trip to the state tournament memorable as it defeated
unranked St. Marys Memorial (24-2) in the finals, 1-0. Green Wave senior Abbie Shell not only drove in the
game’s only run with a double in the bottom of the sixth, but she also hurled a complete game two-hitter and
struck out seven for the win. Memorial was in the championship game for the first time.
In the semifinals, Greenville erased a 4-3 deficit by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to record
it to a 6-4 win over Akron Archbishop Hoban. A two-run, two-out ground rule double by senior left fielder
Cortnie Drew was the game-winner. Drew drove in three runs and junior catcher Krysten Blumenstock had three
hits. St. Marys scored two runs in the bottom of the third and held on to defeat Circleville, 2-1. Sophomore Kayla
Thornsberry hurled a complete game two-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead the Roughriders.
Division III: Carroll Bloom-Carroll (23-8) defended its championship and won its second title overall when it
defeated Navarre Fairless (22-10) in the finals, 11-0 in five innings. Junior Erin Peirano, who played first and second,
was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Bulldogs’ 12-hit attack. Sophomore Gabbey Gillian was
the winning pitcher. Fairless, unranked and in the state tournament for the first time, was held to five hits and
committed six errors.
In the semifinals, Bloom-Carroll knocked off top-ranked Brookville, 6-1, as Gillian and junor second baseman
Heather Armstrong each had two hits. Jeromesville Hillsdale tied Fairless at two in the top of the seventh before
the Falcons scored the winning run in the bottom of the frame on sophomore center fielder Kristen Gromes’
triple to take a 3-2 win. Senior catcher Jamie Gromes, Kristen’s sister, had two hits and scored the game-winning
run after leading off the seventh with a single.
Division IV: Top-ranked and defending champion Dalton (27-4) won its second title overall when it stopped
unranked North Lewisburg Triad (23-8), 3-1. Senior Jessi Carmichael gave up one hit and tied a state tournament
small-school record with 15 strikeouts to lead the way. For good measure, she also drove in what proved to
be the winning runs with a two-run double in the fifth. Junior Andrea Arney drove in the other Bulldogs run.
Triad, seeking its second state title, also lost to Dalton in last year’s title game, 1-0.
In the semifinals, Dalton scored three runs in the top of the third and held on to defeat No. 3 Convoy Crestview,
3-2. Three players had two hits apiece, including Carmichael, who pitched the first five innings to earn the win.
OHSAA SPRING SPORTS TOURNAMENTS -3-3-3
Boys Division III: Dayton Christian won its third state championship when it had 40 points to edge Columbus
Grove, which had 38. Defending champion Waynesfield-Goshen tied for eighth. Sophomore Walter Luttrell won
the Warriors’ only championship when he captured the 3200. The school, which won its other titles in 1982 and
1996, also had runner-up finishes in the 800, 1600 and 4x800 relay and a third-place showing in the 3200.
The Division also saw Yellow Springs senior Sam Borchers defend titles in both the 800 (where he set state
and tournament records at 1:51.54) and the 1600 and anchor the winning 4x800 relay team that set state and
3,200 in the same year. Schenck won the 1600 and 3200 but was second in the 800. Orrville junior DeVonne
Central was runner-up both times, but this season the two schools tied for the crown with 42 points. It was
Gilmour’s third title overall and St. John’s Central’s first championship. Gilmour accumulated its points by winning
the 4x400 and 4x800 relays, placing second twice and third once. The Lancers’ 4x800 relay team of freshman
Grace Brennan, senior Kelsi Nutter, sophomore Melanie Frank and freshman Bekka Simko set state and
of fifth-place finishes.
