FYI…
OLYMPIA Holiday Extravaganza on Saturday, December 18, 2010 was a success! Cotton candy, spin
art, tattoos and snow! The fun slide and a bounce house were set up in the Loggia. It was a great day
for the many residents, their children and grand children! A very big thank you to all of the Bristol
Management staff who helped make this event extra special!
Santa arrived with his special elf. Together they handed out Bristol Management balls and candy
canes to the children. Group photos were taken! Feel free to stop by the office or email Lisa Fuller
(lfuller@bristolmanagement.com) to receive a copy of your child’s photo.
On December 5, 2010 at the OLYMPIA MASTER ASSOCIATION Budget Meeting, the Board of Directors
unanimously voted to adopt the 2011 budget with no increase in quarterly assessments.
In an effort to better serve the residents of OLYMPIA, Securitas recently implemented a new
tracking system. Approximately 75 barcodes have been strategically placed around the community.
While making the rounds of the property, the Security Supervisors scan the barcodes with a custom
designed Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). The device has the capacity to take photographs and
generate reports. The information is automatically downloaded to a centralized computer and is accessible
in the event of an unusual incident. With this new technology, we can monitor the extensive
patrolling that occurs each day. Moving to a digitized system will assist the residents of OLYMPIA by
keeping the community secure and private.
Valley Crest is here to help! What follows is an excerpt from a letter from Valley Crest regarding
plant care during the chilly winter months. “In the last several weeks Florida has experienced record
or near record cold weather with temperatures low enough to damage landscape plants. Damage can
vary from area to area within a landscape. Low temperature is part of the equation of plant damage.
The duration of cold weather is also important. The longer temperature lingers near freezing the
greater the potential plant damage.
Turfgrasses: Areas of lawns exposed to freezing temperatures will likely lose color and remain
brown until the return of consistent warm weather.
Annual color and succulents: Herbaceous plants are very susceptible to freeze damage and
covering them may not fully protect these plants when temperatures dip into the low 20’s or stay
below freezing for an extended period of time. Pansies, violas and snapdragons will likely recover
with time but impatiens and other tender plants that were unprotected may not recover. Only time
will tell.
Shrubs and trees: Damage to woody plants is species dependent and is going to be most severe on
tropical plants that are planted north of their normal adaptation zone. Damage is characterized by
the blackening of leaf tissue immediately after the freeze. These leaves will quickly dry out and turn
brown. Part of the plant may remain green. Wait to see the extent of damage before pruning out
dead wood.
Palms: Freezing temperatures produce immediate damage to flowers and leaves on some palms, it
may also deform embryonic leaves that are just forming in the bud which may not show until
spring or early summer when the leaves emerge. Do not prune any damaged fronds from palms if
they still contain green tissue.”
Meet Your Neighbor
Jacqueline Huhem
Y ou hear her before she arrives. She says she can’t walk unless she’s listening
to music. Once she arrives, the shining smile lights up the room. She proudly
shares the newest addition to her family. She is Jacqueline Huhem with her
granddaughter, little Hannah Densen, out on their daily walk together. Her warm
hello is a reminder that, yes there still are wonderful people in the world. Could it
be any sweeter than that?
Y ou may expect Jacqueline to offer the occasional tidbit of grandmotherly advice.
But she earns that right. It is born of a lifetime of devotion to family. Don’t be
fooled by her demeanor; Jacqueline is much more than your typical grandma. She
is a hard working, accomplished artist.
Her work is on display at the
Smithsonian Institute and in museums around the world.
