Wadsworth Lodge No. 417, F. & A.M., held its first meet<strong>in</strong>g on 26 Jan 1856 at 53 State Street, <strong>Albany</strong>. It was then granted a Charter<br />

by Gr<strong>and</strong> Lodge of <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> State on 6 Jun 1857. The lodge was <strong>in</strong>stituted <strong>and</strong> officers <strong>in</strong>stalled by R.·.W.·. A. Wharton. R.·.W.·.<br />

Ebenezer Wadsworth became the first Master, serv<strong>in</strong>g two years, <strong>and</strong> was also the lodge's first R.·.W.·. brother. For the first forty<br />

years, Wadsworth Lodge was located at several places <strong>in</strong> downtown <strong>Albany</strong>. In 1896, the lodge moved <strong>in</strong>to it present quarters <strong>in</strong> the<br />

newly constructed <strong>Albany</strong> Masonic Temple on Lodge Street. The temple st<strong>and</strong>s with<strong>in</strong> sight of the <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> State Capitol build<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The <strong>Albany</strong> Temple is built on the same site, where, on May 12th, 1768, the cornerstone was laid for the first lodge house built <strong>and</strong><br />

owned by a Masonic lodge (Master's Lodge No.5) <strong>in</strong> North America. S<strong>in</strong>ce that time, this property has rema<strong>in</strong>ed cont<strong>in</strong>uously vested<br />

<strong>in</strong> the h<strong>and</strong>s of the Masonic Fraternity, the oldest such property known to exist <strong>in</strong> the world.<br />

Alex<strong>and</strong>er Selkirk, son of Charles <strong>and</strong> Jane (Elmendorf) Selkirk, was born on the homestead at Selkirk, <strong>Albany</strong>, NY, 18 Jul<br />

1830, died 8 Oct 1905. With his brothers, he received his education at district school No. 2, at Selkirk, his teachers be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

generally men from the eastern states who made school teach<strong>in</strong>g a means to aid them <strong>in</strong> acquir<strong>in</strong>g a collegiate education, <strong>and</strong><br />

under this class of <strong>in</strong>structors he was educated <strong>in</strong> the highest English branches of that day. He removed to <strong>Albany</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1847, <strong>and</strong><br />

at James Goold & Company's coach factory learned the art of coach ornamentation <strong>and</strong> heraldry, <strong>and</strong> was made foreman <strong>in</strong><br />

that department <strong>in</strong> 1850. In 1849, with George H. Boughton, James McDougal Hart <strong>and</strong> James Williamson, he formed a class<br />

for the study of freeh<strong>and</strong> draw<strong>in</strong>g from models, with John E. Gavit, banknote engraver, as <strong>in</strong>structor. In the spr<strong>in</strong>g of 1853 he<br />

went <strong>in</strong>to the bus<strong>in</strong>ess of carriage manufacturer, <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>in</strong> that until 1864, when he sold out to Shaw & Rose. He then<br />

entered the profession of solicitor of patents <strong>and</strong> attorney <strong>in</strong> patent cases, also that of mechanical expert, <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>in</strong> this<br />

profession with success that won recognition until his death. He was located at the start at No. 44 North Pearl street, <strong>and</strong> after<br />

1885 at No. 31 North Pearl street. Be<strong>in</strong>g of an <strong>in</strong>ventive turn of m<strong>in</strong>d, he perfected several important <strong>and</strong> practical <strong>in</strong>ventions.<br />

In politics he voted first for Fremont <strong>and</strong> was always a Republican <strong>and</strong> protective tariff man. Although not <strong>in</strong> any sense a<br />

politician, he was frequently present at gather<strong>in</strong>gs to advocate a cause or c<strong>and</strong>idate, serv<strong>in</strong>g his party considerably <strong>in</strong> one way<br />

or another without thought or expectation of personal ga<strong>in</strong>. When a new water supply for the city of <strong>Albany</strong> was be<strong>in</strong>g agitated<br />

with considerable fervor by the advocates of different methods to be pursued, <strong>and</strong> a scheme known as the "K<strong>in</strong>derhook Water<br />

Supply" was be<strong>in</strong>g pressed, Mr. Selkirk gave such time <strong>and</strong> untir<strong>in</strong>g effort <strong>in</strong> conv<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g the public of the enormous cost <strong>and</strong><br />
