May 1884, was appo<strong>in</strong>ted assistant state dairy commissioner, at the time of the creation of the department. The title of his office has<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce been changed to that of assistant commissioner of agriculture, an office which he has reta<strong>in</strong>ed under every commissioner<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>ted. Mr. Fl<strong>and</strong>ers was one of the first to advocate the creation of the department. He is a member of Ancient City Lodge<br />

[No. 452], F&AM, <strong>and</strong> of the Royal Arcanum. In April, 1885, he married Cathar<strong>in</strong>e Southwick, daughter of Wilham Keeler, of <strong>Albany</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> they have two daughters : Lillian Lovell <strong>and</strong> Marian Southwick.<br />

Albert C. Goodw<strong>in</strong> is descended from Ozias Goodw<strong>in</strong>, who came with his brother. Elder William, <strong>in</strong> the ship Lion, from Bra<strong>in</strong>tree,<br />

Engl<strong>and</strong>, arriv<strong>in</strong>g at Boston, Sep 1632, with his wife, Mary Woodward. He settled <strong>in</strong> Cambridge, MA, <strong>and</strong> later <strong>in</strong> Hartford, CT. The<br />

l<strong>in</strong>e is (1) Ozias; (2) William; (3) Deacon Nathaniel; (4) Isaac; (5) Uriah, of Ashfield, MA, member of the committee of safety 1778, of<br />

the committee to raise troops, 1780, <strong>and</strong> array supplies, 1781, <strong>and</strong> selectmen <strong>and</strong> assessor, 1781; (6) Eldad Francis, 1761-1827,<br />

born <strong>in</strong> Hartford, CT, <strong>and</strong> was the millwright <strong>in</strong> the town of his birth for many years, moved to Watervliet, <strong>Albany</strong> county, <strong>and</strong> kept<br />

hotel, <strong>and</strong> after the death of his first wife, Lucy Scott, came to <strong>Albany</strong>; (7) Albert, born <strong>in</strong> Ashfield, MA, 3 Sep 1803, died 10 Feb<br />

1869, <strong>in</strong> <strong>Albany</strong>, where he was alderman, city assessor <strong>and</strong> mason <strong>and</strong> builder; (8) Thomas La<strong>in</strong>g: <strong>and</strong> (9) Albert C. Albert (7)<br />

married, 13 Oct 1828, Jane La<strong>in</strong>g, who died May 31, 1835. Of their seven children, Thomas La<strong>in</strong>g Goodw<strong>in</strong>, born <strong>in</strong> <strong>Albany</strong>, 24 Jan<br />

1835, married 23 May 1860, Pamelia Batchelder Clark, born 7 Aug 1841, daughter of Daniel Parsons <strong>and</strong> Cathar<strong>in</strong>e (Russ) Clark.<br />

He died <strong>in</strong> Nov 1888; he had three children; Albert C, born 14 Feb 1861, <strong>and</strong> two who died young. Educated <strong>in</strong> the Boys' Academy<br />

<strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g the lithographic trade with Harry Pease, he formed <strong>in</strong> 1860 a co-partnership with George W. Lewis, which was<br />

succeeded by Murray & Goodw<strong>in</strong>; about 1872 he became sole owner <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1882 admitted his son, Albert C. under the firm name of<br />

Thomas L. Goodw<strong>in</strong> & Son. Thomas L. was an active, prom<strong>in</strong>ent Democrat, foreman of the Volunteer Tivoli Hose Company,<br />

member of the Old Guard of the Burgesses Corps <strong>and</strong> the Fourth Presbyterian church, <strong>and</strong> a trustee of the Home Sav<strong>in</strong>gs Bank In<br />

1886 Mr. Goodw<strong>in</strong> retired <strong>and</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce then Albert C. has conducted the genera] lithographic <strong>and</strong> engrav<strong>in</strong>g establishment alone,<br />

largely <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g the bus<strong>in</strong>ess, which is the only one of the k<strong>in</strong>d between <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>and</strong> Buffalo.<br />

Albert C. was educated <strong>in</strong> the Boys' Academy, has passed through the chairs <strong>and</strong> is the present Master of Ancient City Lodge No.<br />

452, F&AM, a member of Temple Chapter, No. 5, R. A. M., <strong>and</strong> Temple Comm<strong>and</strong>ery, No. 2, K. T. He was secretary <strong>and</strong><br />

super<strong>in</strong>tendent of the old Men<strong>and</strong> Mission from 1880 to 1885, <strong>and</strong> with Rev. Charles Wood organized the Viaduct Mission <strong>in</strong> 1886,<br />

of which he was super<strong>in</strong>tendent several years. He was a trustee of the Fourth Presbyterian church for eight years, until his removal<br />

to Men<strong>and</strong>s <strong>in</strong> 1895, <strong>and</strong> has been secretary, treasurer, trustee <strong>and</strong> president of the <strong>Albany</strong> <strong>County</strong> Sunday School Teachers'<br />

Association, <strong>and</strong> director of the South End Bank. In 1839 he married Sarah Alice Higgs, of Brooklyn, daughter of George Henry, <strong>and</strong><br />

the late Frances (Fisher) Higgs, <strong>and</strong> their children are Alice Lloyd <strong>and</strong> Albert C, jr.<br />

Dr. Frederick R. Greene, son of Warren S. <strong>and</strong> Celia (R<strong>and</strong>all) Greene, was born 8 Jun 1863, <strong>in</strong> Petersburgh, NY. He was<br />

educated at the district school <strong>in</strong> Petersburgh <strong>and</strong> at Hoosick Falls Academy, <strong>and</strong> after read<strong>in</strong>g medic<strong>in</strong>e one year with Dr. L. B.<br />

<strong>New</strong>ton, of North Benn<strong>in</strong>gton, VT, entered the <strong>Albany</strong> Medical College <strong>in</strong> the fall of 1881, graduat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1884 with the degree of M.<br />

D. He practiced <strong>in</strong> Petersburgh, NY, for a year <strong>and</strong> a half, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> the fall of 1885 located <strong>in</strong> <strong>Albany</strong>, where he is now practic<strong>in</strong>g. Dr.<br />

Greene is a member of the Acacia Club, Ancient City Lodge No. 452, F&AM, Mounta<strong>in</strong>eer Lodge, I. O. O. F., <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong><br />

Encampment No. 1, K. P., <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Albany</strong> <strong>County</strong> Medical Society. October 6, 1886, he married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas R.<br />

Blackburn, of <strong>Albany</strong>, <strong>and</strong> they have one son, Frederick R., jr.<br />

Charles H Herrick, 87, a native Roman who had been a Mason for about 60 years, died this morn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Masonic Hospital, Utica. He had resided <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Masonic Home for about a year. Mr Herrick, the last memebr of his family, leaves a niece, Mrs Myra Jones, Oneida, <strong>and</strong> a nephew Clarence Herrick, RD 2,<br />

Cl<strong>in</strong>ton. Born <strong>in</strong> the Town of Rome on 5 Feb 1865; d. 5 Apr 1952, a son of Archibald <strong>and</strong> Almira Pratt Herrick, he married <strong>in</strong> Rome Feb 15, 1907 Elizabeth<br />

Carr, who died 20 May 1942.<br />

Mr. Herrick had followed several occupations. At the age of 9 he worked on the Erie Canal, cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g for eight years. He worked as a locomotive works<br />

mach<strong>in</strong>ist from 1887-92, spent a period <strong>in</strong> the <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> Central Railroad shop <strong>in</strong> <strong>Albany</strong>, <strong>and</strong> came back to Rome <strong>in</strong> 1896 to enter the meat bus<strong>in</strong>ess. Later he<br />

farmed <strong>in</strong> Westmorel<strong>and</strong>. Several stories, of a 16 pound turnip, potatoes two <strong>and</strong> a half to three pounds <strong>and</strong> of digg<strong>in</strong>g a bushel of potatoes from 12 hills when it<br />

normally requires 30, bore testimony to his success. An enthusiastic Mason, he was a member of Ancient City Lodge 452 [No. 452], <strong>Albany</strong>, F&AM. He helped<br />

lay the cornerstone of the Masonic Temple <strong>in</strong> that city <strong>in</strong> 1900. Mr. Herrick was also a life member of Rome Grange, hav<strong>in</strong>g jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> 1892. Prior to tak<strong>in</strong>g up<br />

residence <strong>in</strong> the Masonic Home, he lived with Mr <strong>and</strong> Mrs Robert Payne <strong>and</strong> their daughter, Patricia Anne, 112 E Bloomfield St.<br />

Mart<strong>in</strong> Eaton Nangle, born <strong>in</strong> East Waterford, Perry county. PA, 31 Dec 1848, is a son of Mart<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> Isabella Bensha (Sturgess)<br />

Nangle. Mart<strong>in</strong>, a native of London, Engl<strong>and</strong>, settled <strong>in</strong> Philadelphia about 1830 as a silversmith, <strong>and</strong> died <strong>in</strong> East Waterford <strong>in</strong> 1855,<br />

aged 65, leav<strong>in</strong>g these children: Edward J., of Nebraska, who served one year <strong>in</strong> the Civil war; Joseph R., Julia S. (Mrs Van<br />

Schaack) of <strong>Albany</strong>; Mary Emma (Mrs. Cunn<strong>in</strong>gham) of Nebraska; Mart<strong>in</strong> E. of <strong>Albany</strong>, <strong>and</strong> one deceased. Joseph R. enlisted <strong>in</strong><br />

Sep 1861, <strong>in</strong> Co. A, 49th Pa. Vols., <strong>and</strong> served until October, 1864. He settled <strong>in</strong> <strong>Albany</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1867 as foreman of the car department<br />

of what is now the D. & H. C. R. R., <strong>and</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce 1880 has been engaged <strong>in</strong> the coal bus<strong>in</strong>ess. In 1867 he married Elizabeth B.,<br />

daughter of J. D. Howell, a major <strong>in</strong> the war of the Rebellion, of Juniata county. Pa. Mrs. Isabella B. (Sturgess) Nangle, a member of<br />

two old <strong>Albany</strong> families, Sturgess <strong>and</strong> Bensha, was born <strong>in</strong> the Capta<strong>in</strong> Schuyler mansion at the head of Schuyler street.<br />

Mart<strong>in</strong> E. Nangle enlisted <strong>in</strong> 2 Sep 1864, <strong>in</strong> Co. B, 202d Pa. Vols. [mustered out 3 Aug 1865], <strong>and</strong> after the war engaged <strong>in</strong><br />

railroad<strong>in</strong>g, settl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Albany</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1866. In 1876 he became associated with William E. Griff<strong>in</strong>, an undertaker of Greenbush, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
