As I celebrate my tenth anniversary as Head of<br />

School at <strong>Elgin</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>, I am deeply honored to<br />

serve this great institution—now beginning its<br />

172 nd year. We are the leading independent school<br />

in Chicago’s Northwest/West suburbs and our<br />

teachers and students prove it every day.<br />

The Class of <strong>2010</strong> amazed us with their accomplishments,<br />

their poise, and their seriousness<br />

throughout the college search process. They are<br />

100% college bound, with a collective $2 million Dr. Cooper visits EA’s new College Counseling Conference Room.<br />

in merit-based scholarship offers. A talented and intelligent group, they earned an average ACT score<br />

of 27, one of the best scores in the state.<br />

Commencement Day afforded other pleasures: a terrific speech by alumna and business leader, Emily<br />

Heisley ’83 Stoeckel; inspiring music; and the recognition of our Valedictorian and Ora Pelton and<br />

Mother-Daughter Awardees.<br />

This spring and summer have brought continued improvements to our campus—renovations in several<br />

buildings, a new Activity Bus (funded by contributions from the Parents Association, the Booster Club,<br />

and the Patrons of the Arts), a lovely new garden in memory of Deb Bosowski (former EA parent and<br />

staff member), street improvements throughout our neighborhood, and many other enhancements.<br />

We had a very successful 2009-<strong>2010</strong> academic year. The tough economic times have impacted our<br />

enrollment and, therefore, our budgets. But all the vital signs of the <strong>Academy</strong> are strong. The school<br />

recently earned reaccreditation with the Independent Schools Association of the Central States, the<br />

curriculum is solid, the faculty is outstanding, and the quantitative measures of student performance<br />

continue to rise. Philanthropic support remains very strong from the community, past and current<br />

parents, alumni, and our many other donors.<br />

EA Sports Teams Have a Great Year<br />

A<br />

long tradition of athletic success was significantly<br />

augmented during the 2009-<strong>2010</strong> school year,<br />

thanks to the tireless efforts of athletes, coaches, parents,<br />

and EA’s Athletic Booster Club. It was truly a team<br />

effort.<br />

The <strong>Academy</strong> offers nine different sports in the Upper<br />

School and five in the Middle School. Our athletic<br />

conference is the Independent School League, and<br />

Head of School Dr. John Cooper currently serves as<br />

commissioner.<br />

As a member of the Illinois High School Association<br />

(IHSA) the <strong>Academy</strong> competes for individual and team<br />

recognition at the regional, sectional, and state levels.<br />

We’re so proud of the dedication and sportsmanship<br />

displayed by all of our athletes, coaches, and fans.<br />

Some highlights from 2009-<strong>2010</strong> include:<br />

Senior member of the Girls Varsity Tennis Team,<br />

Bianca Swegler, advanced to the State Tennis meet.<br />

The Girls Varsity Basketball Team won its firstever<br />

Regional Championship, advancing to the<br />

“Elite Eight” in the Sectional play-offs.<br />

The Boys Tennis team advanced to the State Tennis<br />

tournament.<br />

Senior Sarah Parker advanced to the State Track &<br />

Field meet for the second straight year, competing<br />

in the Long Jump.<br />

Our Middle School Boys 7th Grade Soccer team<br />

had a great season, posting a 10-1 win/loss record.<br />

Senior Lauren Steimle was selected as the Daily<br />

Herald Female Athlete of the Year for her<br />

contributions to the success of our Girls Basketball<br />

and Soccer teams. Lauren is off to Washington<br />

University in St. Louis where she will play college<br />

soccer.<br />

Special thanks to the Athletic Booster Club for all they<br />

do to support EA’s athletic programs. They give many<br />

volunteer hours and help to raise money<br />

for a variety of summer clinics, sports<br />

equipment, activity buses, and improvements<br />

to our gymnasium and fields. Their<br />

recent Golf Classic raised over $20,000<br />

for these purposes!<br />

<strong>2010</strong> Commencement Address<br />

I<br />

still remember my graduation day at EA. It was hot and<br />

humid, but once the procession started and I watched<br />

all of the faculty and administration sporting a colorful<br />

display identifying their honors and degrees, I felt a sense<br />

of pride that I was a part of the <strong>Elgin</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> community.<br />

My EA experience had an indelible impact on my life<br />

and my future. I walked into an environment that was<br />

nurturing and challenging. Some of my teachers are here<br />

today, Mr. Fletcher, Mr. Kidston, and Mr. Stuart. They,<br />

and all the other dedicated teachers, changed me. They<br />

taught me to reach for things beyond my knowledge and<br />

talent, to apply what I learned, question what I thought<br />

I knew, and build the self-confidence and love of learning<br />

that I carry with me to this day. That, combined with a<br />

burning ambition to achieve, was a powerful combination.<br />

I was very focused during my time at EA. I wanted to<br />

learn as much as I could, graduate, attend an outstanding<br />

university, and make my mark on the world. However, an<br />

arts credit stood between me and graduation. I was not<br />

known for my artistic talent, I liked to believe that my<br />

creativity was reflected in problem solving. I still remember<br />

my first art class with Mr. Stuart. He asked us to bring in<br />

an object from home to use as the basis of our drawing<br />

project. As I was running out the door to school, I<br />

remembered the assignment and grabbed the first thing I<br />

saw on the counter—a door knob! Mr. Stuart patiently<br />

taught me how to turn that object into art, which he then<br />

matted and hung in Sears Hall. (See photo.) I took great<br />

pride in this, because it illustrated what I was capable of<br />

accomplishing if only I would to leave my comfort zone.<br />

. . . I am so proud to have been asked to give this year’s<br />

commencement address, and I am so proud of all of you. I<br />

know you have the knowledge and tools to succeed.<br />

Dream big! Never forget where you came from, lean on<br />

your families. They are always there for you, celebrating<br />

your success and cushioning your falls. (Excerpt.)<br />

<strong>2010</strong> Valedictory Address<br />

In 1997 Mary Schmich, a Chicago Tribune columnist,<br />

wrote, “Inside every adult lurks a graduation speaker<br />

dying to get out . . . most of us, alas, will never be invited<br />

to sow our words of wisdom among an audience of caps<br />

and gowns, but there’s no reason we can’t entertain ourselves<br />

by composing a Guide to Life for Graduates.” Schmich<br />

reminds us to cherish the small, good moments in life and<br />

to forget, if possible, the bad. She reminds us to avoid<br />

worrying, as she says, “the real troubles in life are apt to be<br />

things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that<br />

blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.”<br />

And so, here I have the chance to address those adorned<br />

in cap and gown; and I am searching for the graduation<br />

speaker in me. I was told to speak of what is meaningful to<br />

me. . . . I urge each of you sitting with me to pay close<br />

attention to your passions and to then weave them into<br />

your daily lives. Finding your passion is a process to be<br />

taken at your own pace. Perhaps the resulting wick burns<br />

slowly; perhaps it engulfs itself in flame immediately.<br />

I have no doubt that every student here will make some<br />

sort of commotion while their wicks burn down—there<br />

will be grand explosions of new ideas and bright fireworks<br />

of creativity. . . . Our class will start new fires, light new<br />

wicks, and set off blindingly-bright lights.<br />

I urge each individual to experiment with these sparks,<br />

with these random acts that scare you each day. My lone<br />

advice is to let yourself burn up because you are engulfed<br />

in your passion. In Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, he writes,<br />

“. . . the only people for me are the mad ones . . . the ones<br />

who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn,<br />

burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding<br />

like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the<br />

blue centerlight pop and everybody goes ‘Awww!’” Like<br />

Kerouac’s description, I advise you to live your life with<br />

that passion; but like Schmich, I can only advise this based<br />

on limited experience. (Excerpt.)

Award Winner for <strong>2010</strong><br />

David Kaufman<br />

The Ora L. Pelton III Award is presented to the “boy<br />

graduate who best typifies the ideals and character of<br />

<strong>Elgin</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>.” This year’s recipient is a young man whose<br />

intellectual ability, leadership skills, compassionate<br />

approach to others, and community involvement make him<br />

a very well-suited recipient of this prestigious award.<br />

David Kaufman is a talented student who has challenged<br />

himself across our curriculum throughout his career, taking<br />

high-level courses in varied disciplines and excelling in a<br />

variety of ways. His teachers have described him as someone<br />

who “excels at breaking problems into smaller pieces and<br />

explaining them to others” and always exhibits a “calm,<br />

confident presence.” These traits have served him well as<br />

he fittingly saved his best academic work for the end, when<br />

the work became the hardest, raising his GPA substantially<br />

between the beginning and the end of his senior year. Our<br />

recipient is poised for success in college, because he has<br />

learned how to struggle and succeed—the ultimate life skill.<br />

It is also fitting to give this award, meant to acknowledge<br />

character, to one of EA’s foremost “characters.” Kaufman<br />

is ceaselessly funny, bringing appropriate humor to any<br />

situation. He has spearheaded our Improv Club, acted on<br />

our stages, and generally brought humor to our daily lives<br />

including his cleverly humorous predictions for his<br />

classmates at the Baccalaureate Dinner. But, he is more<br />

than funny; there is a depth to his character that indicates<br />

both meanings of the word “character” adequately apply<br />

to him. He is a community servant, friend, state-qualifying<br />

athlete, and compassionate person who wants things to be<br />

better for those around him. He is a fitting winner of this<br />

award designed to encompass the full range of expectations<br />

in the <strong>Academy</strong> mission statement.<br />

Mother-Daughter<br />

Award Winner for <strong>2010</strong><br />

Rachel Krueger<br />

T he Mother-Daughter Award is presented to the “girl<br />

graduate who best typifies the ideals and character of<br />

<strong>Elgin</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>.” This year’s recipient has been described<br />

as “hungry to learn the most she can from any experience”<br />

and “curious, engaged, and productive.” She has also been<br />

described as “one of the most involved students at our<br />

school” and as someone who “never fails to accomplish<br />

anything that she has committed herself to doing.” She is<br />

the student who asks a question that slightly switches the<br />

direction and paves the way for a conversation to progress.<br />

Rachel Krueger’s contributions to the <strong>Academy</strong><br />

community have not only been in the form of her classy<br />

and understated academic performance; instead these<br />

classroom traits only served as predictors of her work outside<br />

of the classroom where her impact has been wide, varied,<br />

and important. She has been a member of our Student<br />

Council, worked on set design and construction, served<br />

her community in numerous ways, worked part-time jobs,<br />

and even spent quiet hour upon quiet hour creatively<br />

turning a ballroom into a desert. This is only a partial list<br />

of the activities, work places, and student groups who have<br />

benefited from her care, compassion, and diligence, and<br />

all of these activities feature the same selflessness and desire<br />

to allow others to enjoy something or benefit in some way.<br />

A few months ago, an EA trustee mentioned that he had<br />

been to the University of Illinois and met one of our alums<br />

who had immediately impressed him through her<br />

intelligence, understanding, and concern. Next year, if this<br />

same trustee or anyone else has occasion to present to a<br />

group of students at that same great University it will not<br />

surprise me to hear that story about Rachel Krueger.<br />

FACULTY PROFILE—KAREN BAZOSE<br />

Third Grade Teacher Karen Bazos and Madigan Boborci learned<br />

a lot about India during Lower School Immersion.<br />

Karen Bazos has been touching the lives of Lower School<br />

students at EA for the past 17 years. She was born<br />

and raised in <strong>Elgin</strong>, Illinois, attended public school, and<br />

went on to study at Butler University in Indianapolis.<br />

According to its website, Butler emphasizes “a liberal artsinfused<br />

education that develops engaged citizens<br />

committed to making a positive difference in the world.”<br />

If that sounds familiar, you are probably thinking of the<br />

<strong>Elgin</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> mission statement! It should come as no<br />

surprise therefore, that Karen sought to continue her<br />

teaching career at EA after an early stint in public schools<br />

and a career break to start her family. “My mother was a<br />

teacher, and she encouraged me to also take up a career in<br />

teaching,” Karen confides. “I was very interested in science,<br />

and the prospect of teaching seemed rather attractive.<br />

However, it was only after I started teaching that it really<br />

became an important part of me. I feel so rewarded by the<br />

personal and professional growth that teaching offers.”<br />

Karen joined EA in 1991, serving as a teacher of fourth<br />

grade for four years, and since then as a teacher of third<br />

grade. Her personal philosophy of education has evolved<br />

over time and reflects her wealth of experience at EA.<br />

“Success comes from treating the class as a group working<br />

together and from the students learning that their success<br />

depends on what they each put into the learning process.<br />

What they put in is returned tenfold. Together they gain<br />

self-confidence as they work toward success. For me, it is<br />

more about psychology than philosophy,” says Karen.<br />

On stepping into Karen’s classroom, one immediately<br />

notices a sense of order and purpose. When the students<br />

arrive, they settle down quickly. It is math time, and they<br />

just cannot wait for the lesson to begin. After an<br />

introductory session as a whole class, the students divide<br />

themselves without any fuss into groups for practical work,<br />

and quite soon they demonstrate their ability to operate<br />

productively together. It’s the Bazos psychology at work!<br />

Next, representatives from each group record their results<br />

on the board and another joint session ensues where group<br />

members explain their findings to the class as well as the<br />

methods used in reaching their conclusions. This is typical<br />

of the University of Chicago Everyday Mathematics<br />

Program, of which Karen is a strong advocate. “The students<br />

don’t just do math, they become mathematicians,” says<br />

Karen. “The math is relevant and important to them, and<br />

they apply it in meaningful contexts. The same is true of<br />

science where, in a true demonstration of the scientific<br />

method, Karen’s students design and carry out experiments<br />

to test their hypotheses, and then proceed to discuss the<br />

results with their classmates, who have become noticeably<br />

proficient in posing the most searching of questions. Later<br />

in the day, young authors can be observed busily editing<br />

their latest drafts and preparing for their oral presentations,<br />

some conferencing with one another while others seek<br />

guidance from Karen. “Working well together, both inside<br />

the classroom and beyond, is so very important,” Karen<br />

insists once again. “And I believe the person doing the<br />

talking is the one doing the learning.”<br />

While still a relative newcomer to EA, it was clear to<br />

Karen that she was part of a school with a strong sense of<br />

tradition combined with a sense of community, where<br />

individuals can reach their full potential and nobody falls<br />

through the cracks. It was then that Karen and her husband,<br />

Peter, decided to enroll their two daughters at EA, Erin<br />

into seventh grade and Lindsay into fourth grade. Further<br />

demonstrating the family commitment to EA, Peter shared<br />

his time and energy, as a parent volunteer and as a member<br />

of the Board of Trustees.<br />

Karen loves to travel and visits her daughters wherever<br />

they are. Erin spent five years living and working in Italy<br />

and was married there last year. Lindsay recently finished<br />

her Master of Fine Arts degree in San Francisco, and now<br />

both girls are pursuing careers as designers in New York<br />

City. Karen also enjoys reading, playing golf, and whenever<br />

the opportunity arises, kayaking on Lake Geneva!

Andrew Carnegie is credited with saying that “success<br />

in life is measured not by how much you get but by<br />

how much you give.” Emily Heisley Stoeckel, EA Class of<br />

1983, is a striking example of the truth of this sentiment.<br />

Always a loyal alumna, Emily has contributed generously<br />

and often to the <strong>Academy</strong> to support need-based<br />

scholarships, innovative teaching, facilities, and equipment.<br />

She has also visited campus regularly and stayed in touch<br />

with, as she puts it, “the things that have changed and the<br />

things that have stayed the same.” <strong>Elgin</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> is,<br />

indeed, proud of her professional and civic<br />

accomplishments. The school was honored to feature Emily<br />

as our Commencement Speaker for <strong>2010</strong>. In fact, she is<br />

also the aunt of one of the graduates of the Class of <strong>2010</strong>,<br />

Mary Heisley.<br />

Emily came to EA for only her final two years of high<br />

school. But, she says, “The time I spent at the <strong>Academy</strong><br />

had an indelible impact on my life and my future. I walked<br />

into an environment that was nurturing and challenging.”<br />

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA<br />

She particularly remembers her teachers, including three<br />

who still teach at EA, Fred Fletcher, Jim Kidston, and<br />

Joe Stuart. “They taught me to reach for things beyond<br />

my knowledge and talent.”<br />

After graduating from the <strong>Academy</strong>, Emily attended<br />

Northwestern University. Her initial interest in technology,<br />

which had been roused by Jim Kidston’s computer class,<br />

began to blossom. It was 1983, she was the only freshman<br />

in the dorm to own a personal computer. During the<br />

summers, she taught corporate secretaries how to use word<br />

processing software and salesmen how to forecast using<br />

spreadsheets. Upon graduation with her Bachelor of Arts<br />

in Economics in hand, Emily went to work for a couple of<br />

years before returning to the University of Chicago for her<br />

Master of Business Administration in Finance. Emily<br />

muses:<br />

“The years I spent at Northwestern and the University<br />

of Chicago, were extraordinary. I met friends who enriched<br />

my life. I developed a deeper appreciation for my family<br />

and those people who shaped the person I am today. I<br />

spent years in the trenches using the skills and talents I<br />

developed as a young student to excel. I had passion,<br />

enthusiasm, and a strong work ethic. Today, I am Chairman<br />

of our family’s business, The Heico Companies. It began<br />

as a vision, my father’s dream, $150,000 cash, unrelenting<br />

effort, blood, sweat, and tears—mostly from our family.<br />

I have the privilege to continue his legacy on behalf of my<br />

family.”<br />

Emily has devoted 20 years to the growth and<br />

development of her family’s enterprise. The company owns<br />

approximately 50 businesses worldwide within a diverse<br />

set of industries such as steel, fasteners, steel wire products,<br />

heavy equipment, industrial products, commercial<br />

construction, and material handling equipment. Heico is<br />

also the majority owner of the NBA Memphis Grizzlies.<br />

In keeping with Andrew Carnegie’s sentiment, Emily<br />

has not only been a very successful business person, she<br />

has given back to her communities in so many ways. She<br />

is actively involved in many philanthropic activities on<br />

behalf of The Latin School of Chicago, Junior<br />

Achievement, Chicago Children’s Museum, and the Heisley<br />

Family Foundation.<br />

As if that were not enough, she sits on the board of<br />

several companies and is married with four children.<br />

<strong>Elgin</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> is full of pride at the accomplishments<br />

of one of its very own, Emily Heisley ’83 Stoeckel.<br />

Bequests: A Legacy that Endures<br />

Of all of the gifts you could offer <strong>Elgin</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>, one of the most meaningful—and one of the<br />

A bequest lets you balance philanthropic goals with concerns that you may have about living<br />

Stephen L. Davidow ’82, president of<br />

Davidow Communications, Inc., in<br />

Westchester, IL, successfully<br />

completed the Examination for<br />

Accreditation in Public Relations in<br />

November 2009, entitling him to use<br />

the professional designation, APR. The<br />

Accreditation program was intended to<br />

improve the practice of public relations<br />

by assessing competence in 60 areas of<br />

knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs)<br />

associated with the profession. The<br />

examination was designed for public<br />

relations professionals with five to<br />

seven years of job experience and/or a<br />

bachelor’s degree in a communications<br />

field. Successful candidates, who have<br />

completed the rigorous process,<br />

including a computer-based examination<br />

and presentation of a portfolio<br />

to a Readiness Review panel, are<br />

granted the APR designation.<br />

Michael Elmúdesi ’91 and his wife,<br />

Abby, and children Michael Andrés,<br />

Jack Martin, and Patrick Miguel have<br />

lived in the Dominican Republic for<br />

nearly ten years. Michael is the vice<br />

president of development of Group<br />

Metro, a real estate development and<br />

tourism conglomerate, headquartered<br />

in Santo Domingo. He is currently<br />

the properties the company is building,<br />

including Costa Blanca, an oceanfront<br />

community that offers a Greg Norman<br />

Signature golf course as well as a Chris<br />

Michael and Abby traveled to<br />

Naples, FL this past June to attend<br />

skydiving license about two years ago.<br />

She has wanted to skydive since she<br />

was a child and finally decided to do<br />

Rebecca Manson ’00 is studying<br />

Veterinary Medicine at University of<br />

Glasgow, Scotland, and has completed<br />

about half of the program. Although<br />

Rebecca was considering medicine<br />

while she studied at Northwestern<br />

University, she changed her mind and<br />

pursued veterinary studies.<br />

Janek Pedersen ’00 is an Investment<br />

Associate at UBS Financial Services,<br />

Inc. on Wacker Drive in Chicago.<br />

Janek attended the Chicago Alumni<br />

Event on February 18, <strong>2010</strong>.<br />

Mattie Whipple ’01 participated in<br />

the Seattle Marathon on June 26,<br />

<strong>2010</strong>, to raise funds for The Leukemia<br />

& Lymphoma Society (LLS) as a<br />

participant in their “Team-In-<br />

Training” program.<br />

Katy Baron ’03 completed a year of<br />

post-graduate service at Mercy Home<br />

for Boys and Girls, a residential<br />

treatment program for at-risk youth in<br />

Chicago, after graduation from the<br />

University of Notre Dame. The year<br />

of service led to a paid job at the agency<br />

and Katy says she truly loves the work.<br />

She has entered a graduate program in<br />

social work this fall. Although Notre<br />

Dame inspired Katy to enter a serviceoriented<br />

profession, she also credits EA<br />

teachers, Ms. Spraetz and Ms. Merrill,<br />

for exposing her to issues and ideas she<br />

otherwise would not have learned<br />

about until college. The community<br />

service projects in which she<br />

participated with Señora Rusniak<br />

shaped her college experience as well<br />

as her direction in life. Katy sends her<br />

teachers at EA a big thank you!<br />

Michael Dunn ’05 graduated from<br />

Illinois Institute of Technology with<br />

honors in May <strong>2010</strong>. He received two<br />

degrees—BS in Computer Science and<br />

Masters in Public Administration. The<br />

following day, Michael was sworn in<br />

as a 2 nd Lieutenant in the U. S. Air<br />

Force. Michael will be serving as an<br />

Air Force communications officer in<br />

Biloxi, MS. His uncle, Harvey<br />

Sorensen, and Michael’s whole family<br />

are very proud of Michael and<br />

expressed their gratitude to EA for the<br />

foundation he built for himself here.<br />

Ryan Reed ’03 enlisted in the U.S.<br />

Army and completed Basic Training at<br />

Fort Benning, GA, last December.<br />

After a visit home for Christmas, Ryan<br />

entered Airborne Training School. His<br />

goal is to train for Special Forces.<br />

Amy Alvine ’08 is finishing her<br />

sophomore year at Hope College in<br />

Holland, MI. She is a double major in<br />

Political Science and Business<br />

Management and an active member of<br />

the Hope College community. This<br />

year Amy participated in many campus<br />

activities: member of the 2012 Pull<br />

team as a “moraler” for the second year<br />

in a row; Director of the Security<br />

Council for Hope College’s Model<br />

United Nations Conference which<br />

hosted over 700 high school students<br />

from all over Michigan; Senior Staff<br />

Writer for the National section of The<br />

Anchor, Hope College’s newspaper;<br />

staffer for the Student Life section for<br />

Milestone, Hope College’s yearbook;<br />

member of the Pre-Law Club;<br />

participated in the American Cancer<br />

Society’s Relay for Life on Hope’s<br />

campus; dancer for Dance Marathon<br />

to raise money for the Helen DeVos<br />

Children’s Hospital, Grand Rapids,<br />

MI; received a mentor from Center for<br />

Faithful Leadership’s Mentor Program;<br />

shadowed local political figures;<br />

pledged the Kappa Delta Chi sorority;<br />

volunteered with KDC at the local<br />

food kitchen, and volunteered at Grace<br />

Place, a local food bank in Naples, FL<br />

on Spring Break. Amy rode in the<br />

Grand Marshall’s car with former<br />

Holland, MI, mayor, Al McGeehan,<br />

in the Tulip Time Volksparade last<br />

May. She took a May term class,<br />

working in the Physics Department.<br />

Amy spent the summer working as a<br />

campus summer conference assistant.<br />

Next year Amy plans to join the sailing<br />

team and participate in intramural<br />

tennis, and will take the Washington,<br />

D.C. Honors Semester through Hope<br />

College’s Political Science Department.<br />

She will live in an apartment with other<br />

Hope students and spend the<br />

semester interning and taking trips<br />

to meet with various political figures.<br />

Turner Wadington ’08 studied<br />

abroad in Paris with a Carleton<br />

College program for about two<br />

months. He stayed with a host<br />

family in the 14 th arrondissement of<br />

Paris just south of the center of the<br />

city and attended classes at the<br />

Center for University Programs<br />

Abroad. Turner took three classes,<br />

one taught by a Carleton professor<br />

and two taught by Parisian faculty.<br />

He had a fabulous experience and<br />

said speaking French was an<br />

adventure and felt his skills<br />

progressed immensely even after just<br />

four weeks. The students were given<br />

five days to travel, so Turner and his<br />

friends decided to go to Rome. They<br />

stayed in a hostel near Termini<br />

Station in the heart of the city. They<br />

didn’t speak much Italian, but<br />

definitely made the best of it. They<br />

pretty much ate their way through<br />

the city and visited every tourist site<br />

they could find including the<br />

Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, the<br />

interior of the Coliseum, Trevi<br />

Fountain, and inside the Pantheon.<br />

It took a 15-hour train ride through<br />

France, Switzerland, and Italy to get<br />

there, an experience in itself. Turner<br />

was in Europe for about ten weeks,<br />

including a week Berlin and had the<br />

time of his life.<br />

Amanda Flannigan ’09 is a sophomore<br />

at Suffolk University in Boston this fall<br />

and made straight A’s her freshman<br />

year.<br />

Todd Renfree ’10 attended EA from<br />

second through fourth grade (<strong>Fall</strong><br />

1999—Spring 2002)and would have<br />

been a member of the Class <strong>2010</strong> had<br />

his family not moved back to Australia.<br />

Todd’s brother, Daniel Renfree<br />

attended EA’s Middle School as well;<br />

and his mother, Helen Crestani,<br />

taught Middle School mathematics.<br />

Todd graduated from Brisbane<br />

Grammar School in 2009, which is<br />

equivalent to high school in the U.S.<br />

He was sought by the Australian<br />

Olympic Committee last February to<br />

compete in the Modern Pentathalon.<br />

Todd was the U19 representative for<br />

Australia. He competed in New<br />

Zealand, taking second place. He has<br />

thrived on sports, including running,<br />

swimming, fencing, and triathalon;<br />

and he has also continued piano and<br />

violin lessons. He works part time at<br />

Splash Leisure as a lifeguard. Todd was<br />

chosen in December 2009 to represent<br />

Oceania in the Modern Pentathlon at<br />

the first <strong>Summer</strong> Youth Olympic<br />

Games held in Singapore this past<br />

August. He qualified after competing<br />

for the single Oceania place in the<br />

Asian Oceanic Elimination Competition<br />

held in Singapore. He qualified<br />

with 804 points against 16 other male<br />

competitors from Asia and Oceania.<br />

IN MEMORIAM<br />

Louise Pearsall ’38 Canby, died on<br />

Friday, January 15, <strong>2010</strong>. Louise was<br />

the first recipient of the Mother-<br />

Daughter Award. Her brother, Burton<br />

Pearsall ’44, who died in 2003, was<br />

also a graduate and former trustee of<br />

<strong>Elgin</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. Louise’s niece, Beth<br />

Pearsall Beckman, a former faculty<br />

member, informed us of Louise’s death<br />

and requested donations be made in<br />

memory of Louise to the Memorial<br />

Scholarship Fund of <strong>Elgin</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>.<br />

A memorial service was held in South<br />

Carolina on January 23.<br />

John “Jack” Pelton Bucklin ’43 died<br />

January 28, <strong>2010</strong>. Jack was married to<br />

Carol Carpenter ’44, who proceeded<br />

him in death in 1995. Jack was quite<br />

the football star at EA. He was<br />

president of the Major “E” Club, sports<br />

editor of the Orange & Black, co-sports<br />

editor of the Hilltop, captain of the<br />

track team in 1942 and 1943, football<br />

team, Student Advisory Council, Day<br />

Student Court, and Dramatic Club.<br />

Jack and Carol were not the only<br />

<strong>Academy</strong> alumni in their repective<br />

families. Jack’s mother was Mary<br />

Pelton ’13 Bucklin, and his brother<br />

was Henry Anson Bucklin ’39. Jack<br />

was also related to Ora L. Pelton ’30<br />

in whose name the Ora L. Pelton<br />

Award was established. Carol’s sister<br />

was Martha Carpenter ’47.<br />

Dr. James C. Dowell ’43 died Sunday,<br />

December 20, 2009 in Lawrence, KS.<br />

He attended Northwestern University<br />

for his undergraduate studies and<br />

attended Medical School at the<br />

University of Illinois. He served his<br />

internship at Cook County Hospital<br />

and his residency at Kansas Unversity<br />

Medical Center. As a senior at EA, Jim<br />

was vice-president of Major “E” Club,<br />

captain of varsity football, co-sports<br />

editor of the Hilltop, was circulation<br />

manager of the Orange & Black, served<br />

on the Day Student Court, Student<br />

Advisory Council, and First Aid. He<br />

also participated on the basketball and<br />

golf teams. He and Jack Bucklin ’43<br />

were great friends.<br />

C. Paul Gubbins ’43 died on April<br />

19, 2009, in Charlotte, NC. Paul was<br />

a member of the Major “E” Club,<br />

Dramatics Club, Football, Basketball,<br />

Track, Golf, and Swimming teams.<br />

After graduation, Paul joined the U.S.<br />

Army and served with the 20 th<br />

Armored Division in France and<br />

Germany during WWII. He was<br />

honorably discharged from the Army<br />

in 1945. Paul then attended Duke<br />

University and majored in Business and<br />

Economics and was a member of Sigma<br />

Chi fraternity. He was a four-year<br />

member of the Duke swimming team<br />

and was captain in his senior year. He<br />

continued to swim throughout his life<br />

and competed in Senior Games. Paul<br />

loved building model trains and<br />

layouts. He also built radio-controlled<br />

model airplanes and wooden sailing<br />

ships. Paul was devoted to his many<br />

rescued cats. His family described him<br />

as the full measure of a man, their man<br />

for all seasons.<br />

Lynn Ann Weir-Herrera ’79 passed<br />

away Tuesday, June 29, <strong>2010</strong>, in<br />

University of Illinois-Chicago Medical<br />

Center. Born in East Alton, the<br />

daughter of Jack and Doris Weir.<br />

Lynn grew up in Barrington,<br />

formerly lived in Mesa, AZ, and<br />

resided in Rockford.<br />

Mitchel Wodka Katy Anderson ’00 Albright and husband, Mike, became parents for<br />

the first time with the birth of their son, Archie Lee, on August 5,<br />
