Introduction to Documentary Filmmaking card

A
workshop, run by the Oxford Academy of
Documentary Film, aimed at preparing you
to use digital film in your fieldwork. Each
workshop provides a generic understanding of
digital filmmaking. There will be a particular concentration
on hands-on teaching of film production
techniques.
OADF’s 5-day intensive workshop will give
you an OADF certificate of proficiency in
documentary filmmaking. By the end of
the course you will have learned the basic skills to
make a short documentary:
• for research purposes
• as an AV addenda for a thesis or publication
• for internet distribution
• for educational use
You will complete four hands-on camera
exercises, write and redraft a film proposal,
shoot in teams on location in Oxford and
help us edit your collaborative efforts into a short
video, which you can take with you on DVD. You
will become aware of the ethical, financial, legal,
and stylistic issues involved in representing other
people. By viewing a variety of different socially
relevant films, you will be aware of different genres
and understand the style and approach relevant to
your research work.
This course is run in two variants: one with a
bias towards scientific filmmaking, the other
towards creating documentaries for social
sciences. Each is lead by filmmakers with an international
reputation in their respective areas.
The course is run in the brand new Apple
Training Centre at OUCS. The cost is £650.
