Pacific Postgraduate Symposium a HUGE Success!
Over 120 people attended the all day symposium. Thank you to
everyone who attended, especially those who presented!
Special thanks to our Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Ian Town for his welcome, our
keynote speaker Professor Sitaleki Finau for sharing some of the great work happening at
Massey University and Kate Rawlings (College of Arts Academic Manager) and Professor
Serge Tcherkezoff (Acting Director for the Macmillan Brown Centre) for presenting the
Pacific Postgraduate Awards. We were especially excited to meet those who travelled
from Samoa, Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin to be a part of our inaugural symposium.
Thank you to all our participants, especially to our wonderful student and staff presenters
who shared their research findings and amazing work. Thank you for your valued and inspiring
contribution to Pacific research.
Massive thanks also to our wonderful student helpers, Riki Welsh, Ariana Letiu, Sera
Thompson, Joseph Faletanoai, Zac Ioane, and Evile Tuua who all worked very hard in the
lead up to the symposium and ensured that our guests were well taken care of.
SYMPOSIUM FEEDBACK
Hearing the younger group
informing us on what they are
studying was excellent!. It just
encourages me to continue on with
higher education at UC. Overall the
impacts of all this research will have
on Pacific communities will
empower myself to carry the
knowledge to the next
generation.
AWESOME!!!
The guest speaker was fantastic!
Awesome organising, it takes alot to
make an event like this run
smoothly and to time. Malo lava to
the P@C team for their work, all we
had to do was sit and listen and they
did everything else.
A+++
This symposium should continue for
the next 5 years to ensure Pacific
students’ ideas and research are
heard. This will help make
Canterbury a unique and positive
place to study and hangout.
EMPOWER
POTENTIAL SCHOLARS – 2015!
LOVED IT!!
I’ve come from Auckland where
there is a high number of post-grad
students. This symposium was so
much better compared to the AUT
PIF research symposium. Well worth
my travel and time costs!
MALO LAVA!
Please note that funding needs to be
secured to ensure this type of
symposium continues. This is an
excellent opportunity to celebrate
and support our future Pacific
leaders.
FANTASTIC!

Pacific Mentors Needed For 2011!!
The Pacific Mentoring Programme is designed to ensure that all first
year students receive the best possible care in their first year.
Having a Pacific mentor can be a great help for first year students who
often feel overwhelmed by the University atmosphere. Mentors help
students find their way around campus, point them in the right
direction and is someone students can stay in touch with throughout
the year for friendship and peer support.
We need Pacific Mentors who want to develop their interpersonal and
leadership skills, enjoy helping people, are fun, active, outgoing and
can give some good advice. Being a Mentor is a great way to engage
with our Pacific community here on campus and employers are
always looking for staff with great people skills — so it looks good on
your CV.
If this sounds like something you would be interested in register
online or contact Nu Telea on:
