President’s Message
Story by Armand Gastelo
October is a month of change. You can
see and feel the change around you.
Porsche has gone through some changes
as well. Porsche engineers revealed an
all new 997, and the all new Panamera
this year. Change is sometimes a good
thing.
Your club has gone through some
changes as well, and will have major
changes next year with a new President,
Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary.
A new web site for the club should be up
and running within the next few months.
Expanded autocross venues are planned
as well for 2010.
Many new and exciting changes are
in the horizon for YOUR club. You too
can be part of this change. Become more
active with the running of events or join
the board of directors or a committee.
Make a difference. We are currently
looking for a new goodie store manager.
Change is good. Well―I wish I still
looked like the photo above.
Editor’s Notes
by Garey Cooper
A Hot Time Was Had By All
We had a near panic in the executive
suite of the Orange Coast Region tower
recently. It seems that the temperature
control in the Club Sauna went haywire
and several high officials were nearly
parboiled! Unfortunately in the ensuing
panic a number of people ran out into
the marble lined hallways with little or
no corporeal coverage and the result
is that we now know some of our
members more than we ever thought we
would. In most cases this is bad news
indeed. I was fortunate enough to have
been reading a copy of the Wall Street
Journal at the time, so that I had ample
newsprint with which to cover myself,
and the graphs were even pointing in
the right direction. As my uncle Rick
O’Shay Cooper used to say, “if you
can’t be good you gotta be lucky.”
We All Answer to the Name of Lucky
I would have to say that we do indeed
answer to the name of Lucky here in the
Orange Coast Region of the Porsche
Club of America. First of all, where
we live, and of course we are fortunate
enough to have the means needed to
acquire a Porsche. Not bad at all in the
great scale of things. And the exodus
of your Board from the Sauna Scalding
puts them back out onto the happy
streets, planning ever more events for
your automotive diversion. Considering
what we’ve already done as a club
and the many more entertaining and
educating things we have planned for
the end of 2009, you just cannot stay
put as a couch potato while the year
winds down. So grab your significant
other and drag them out to our next
happening― you won’t regret it.
The Widow Maker
I mention the weather because
I’m just back from a vacation in
Scotland with Mrs. Cooper. My
primary responsibility on these
jaunts is to watch for the handling
of “The Widow Maker,” (this is
her suitcase). It is no coincidence
that the EU has seen an upsurge in
Workmens Comp cases after the
Widow Maker has gone through
and laid waste to backs, cartilage,
and even bones. The airlines try
to warn people when they put a
big red tag that says HEAVY on this
portmanteau. I’ve never even seen the
bottom of it. I know it must be there
somewhere, but the task of digging
down to the depths without special
mining equipment is beyond me and
most people without night vision
goggles.
Scotland is the home of golf,
of course, and it is also where they
invented rain. At least it sure seemed so
during our late August trip. Every time
it was dry for 10 minutes we’d rush
out to the tee box and try to get around
18 dry holes, but this seldom worked
out. Thank goodness it was summer. I
kept looking at the Huntington Beach
weather on the cell phone and it was
just enough to remind me of how
fortunate we are to have a thing called
summer, and the notion of rain as a
novelty and not a normalcy.
OCTOBER 2009 7
Featured Member
Competition Driven!
Story and photos from Bob Stockwell
As far back as I can remember, I have
always loved cars. As a kid, growing up
in South Gate, California, I used to listen
to the Indianapolis 500 on the radio and
mark the position of my favorite drivers
with my small collection of model cars.
My next door neighbor who, along
with his wife, worked at the Firestone tire
plant nearby, had a 1949 MG TC that his
wife took to work everyday―I wanted
that car! As a young boy, I always
tinkered in the garage with my dad and
we built what I thought was the perfect
Soap Box Derby car―that is until I saw
a real one at the local Chevy dealer’s
showroom. Oh well, my car won every
race in our neighborhood since I was
a little heavier than the neighborhood
boys, it went faster downhill!
My first car was a 1959 Fiat 500.
Great little car with 21 horsepower!
Driving it to high school, every day when
I would come out of class to go home, I
usually found it on the sidewalk! Four of
my friends would lift it from its parking
spot and put it on the sidewalk just to
make life difficult! It did win a trophy in
the high school car show for the smallest
car displayed!
In Rome, Bob with a Fiat 500, just like
his first car.
After I graduated from high school,
my parents helped me trade in the Fiat
for a new red 1961 Austin Healey Sprite.
Man, was I livin’! Shortly thereafter, I was
drafted into the Army and ended up as a
Meteorologist in Korea. Upon my return
home, I started to upgrade my Sprite (as
things began breaking) with competition
parts, which would be the beginning of
my foray into car racing. The first try at
replacing the clutch with a competition
unit took me and two friends over two
days and 13+ hours. Subsequently, in
1967 at the Santa Barbara Road Races,
two friends and I replaced the clutch and
Bob in his Sprite at Willow Springs
had the car running for the next race in
1½ hours. What a learning curve!
After my return from the Army,
I started my career in banking in the
Automobile Finance. Now with a steady
job, I could concentrate on racing my
Sprite. I was fortunate to become very
successful in SCCA racing in the H
Production class, finishing 2nd in the
SCCA Pacific Division in 1967 and
going to the SCCA Runoffs in Daytona
Beach, where I took the Pole position
1.5 seconds in front of the field. After
losing the transmission in practice
during qualifying and a series of mishaps
in getting the parts flown in from Los
Angeles (which didn’t arrive), I was
successful in getting one of the reserve
cars to lend me a transmission. Well,
because we were delayed at the Orlando
airport waiting for the parts, it took until
7 a.m. the next morning to change the
Winning the 1968 National
Championship in the Sprite 2
Bob and the Carrera at the 2007
Newport Beach Concours
transmission (using a tree branch to hold
the hoist for the engine in the Holiday
Inn parking lot). The race was at 9:30
a.m.
As it turned out, with no sleep the
night before, I fell asleep on the starting
grid! It wasn’t until I heard the roar of
the other cars, that I woke up! I was 4th
into Turn One (but remember I was 1.5
seconds faster than everybody else. At
the end of the first lap, going into Turn
One again, I was hit in the passenger
door by a sliding competitor who had
locked up his brakes. The hit put me
off the course and when I got turned
around, I was dead last―but remember,
I was 1.5 seconds a lap faster! Then,
on the next lap, my brand new Berry
Plastiglass Fiberglass seat, which was
on a 4-inch aluminum frame, started to
break apart. By the end of the second
lap, my seat was on the floor, sliding
around. I was throwing the parts out of
the car, tightening my seat belts, and I
couldn’t see over the dashboard! Well,
no worry, I was 1.5 seconds faster, right!
Well, I did make back to 5th place, but
eventually, at the end of the race, I spun
out trying to overtake the 4th place car
and, because I was holding on with my
left arm for so long to stay in the car, I
became so fatigued, I couldn’t continue.
The next year (1968), all the stars
were apparently in place. I was the
Pacific Division Champion and won the
National Championship at Riverside! I
moved on to successfully race a Triumph
Spitfire in F Production for several
more years. Due to the heavy racing
expenses, I decided to sell my race car
to a good friend, Kas Kastner, who was
head of the Triumph Racing Division.
He convinced me to trade my race car
for his 22’ Santana sailboat. I instantly
fell in love with sailboats and within a
short time, began racing them in Marina
8
Bob in the Triumph Spitfire race car
Del Rey! For the next 20 years or so, I
raced a number of sailboats that I owned
up and down the Southern California
coast including in the Ensenada Race.
During all this, I met my lovely wife Sue
and we were married in 1978.
Since I had converted the Sprite to
a race car back in 1964, I had to have
a tow vehicle, which ended up being a
1965 Ford Mustang. When I eventually
sold my Triumph race car, I knew that I
wanted a performance car to drive every
day. I had always liked Porsches and as it
turns out, a customer of mine at the bank
had a green 1969 911S for sale. One look
and I was hooked! What a great car. It
had a Bursch exhaust so it sounded great
and it certainly handled way better than
my Sprite or Triumph! Unfortunately,
several years later, while practicing my
driving skills, I crashed and totaled the
Porsche on Pacific Coast Highway right
in front of the Chart House Restaurant!
I went backward across PCH and backed
into a Volkswagen van, which I turned on
its side---but it kept me and the Porsche
from going over the 50’ cliff to the sand
below! Fortunately, no one was hurt,
but the Porsche was a total loss! I then
purchased a more conservative 1974
yellow 924, which became my daily
driver. My wife, Sue, and I took it on our
honeymoon to Aspen, Colorado. During
our trip up to Aspen, the heater control in
the dash broke and we had no heat. As a
result, we would drive until we couldn’t
stand it any longer and would stop for
coffee at a gas station and try to warm up.
As it turned out, as long as the car idled
The crashed ‘69 911S
in the gas station, the inside got toasty
warm. As soon as we started out however,
the cold would set in. Despite the cold,
we had a great trip there and back! Later,
we sold the 924 and bought a 1974 Peru
Red 911 Targa, which, unfortunately, was
stolen a number of years later, from the
bank parking lot where I was working in
Beverly Hills.
A succession of other cars followed,
including several other Mustangs, an
Alfa GTV and even Cadillac Eldorados,
BMW M3, Broncos and Suburbans until
we acquired a 1969 912 Targa. Great car,
but no horsepower! Subsequently, we
found a 1980 Weissach Coupe in Ventura
that was too good to pass up. I entered it
in what was to be the last Porsche Club
Concours held in front of the Westin
Hotel in 1989 or so. The whole family
was involved, Sue, Ryan and our little
daughter, Amanda!
After racing sailboats for 20+ years,
we purchased a 34’ sport fishing boat in
the late 1980s to fish for Marlin. In 1988,
some friends invited Sue and I to Cabo
San Lucas for a vacation. While we were
there, I ran into another friend who had
a 52’ Pacifica sport fishing boat and he
Autocross Corner
Porsche Defeats Ferrari, Lotus &
Corvette at Autocross
& Laguna Seca: A Lifelong Dream
Story by Steve Eguina
August was an endless month of auto
events for many OCR members. The
month began and ended with the Orange
Coast Region/ Walter’s Porsche AutoX
Series events on Aug 9 and 30. In
between was the Monterey Historic Races
with Porsche as the featured marque and
several members raced at the Porsche
Owners Club event at Laguna Seca the
following weekend.
The Sunday Aug. 9 AutoX
kicked off the month with 100+ drivers
entered. The event was sponsored
by Fairview Mortgage Capital and
RacingLifestyle.com. It was a pretty
relaxed event. In addition to FMC and
Racing Lifestyle, Walter’s surprised the
members by bringing out a silver 2010
GT2, a new Cayenne and a 997 Porsche
equipped with the new PDK transmission
for members to DRIVE on the AutoX
course. Talk about a great test drive!
Also, GMG’s Service Manager,
John “G” had some real car jewelry on
display. The new two-pound GMG
World Challenge-inspired catback
exhaust system as well as StopTech
Brakes, Moton suspension and Sparco
driving suits. In addition GMG displayed
a WC-GT2 and a white 2010 GT3 already
equipped with the new exhaust system. I
might mention that John has been around
Porsches most of his life, not only as
an advisor to Porsche North America,
but as a tech expert. So it came as no
surprise when Dick Storehouse’s 993 had
a throttle problem, John asked to borrow
a hand full of tools and had Dick’s car
running in about 20 minutes.
The event had quite a few first
time drivers register for the event. (You
can tell the first timers by the Huge
grins when they come off the course)
They were assigned an instructor, given
a helmet and had a great time playing
with their Porsche. A number of the
competitors had really close times.
Driving modified 911SCs Gerry Griffin
only won over Kent Verderico by 0.300
seconds. Driving their stock 944 Turbo
Rick and Dennis Neff finished 1st
and 3rd with Andres Branum in his 86
Carrera in the middle. All three drivers’
times were only 0.200 seconds apart. In
the N Prepared class, Robert Morales
driving a 996 won over Bob Nimtz in his
993 Cab. That order would be reversed
at the next event. I think these two will
be very close in points for the year-end
championship. Beating the boys, OCR’s
registration Hero Christine Newcomer
took first place in her stock Cayman S
over OCR’s Chief Driving Instructor
Adam Nguyen. (Oh! That hurt.) In the
six-car PS/S class, the times were very
close as Greg Lush beat Jeremy Bernath
by only 0.420 seconds! This Sunday
everything was right in the world. Joe
had cooked up some great dogs, brauts,
chili and burgers and, at the end of the
day, Gary Thomason driving his 996
GT3 turned the Top Time of Day with
a 69.660, beating the Lotus of Jason
Uyeda, Rad Delgado’s Ferrari and Steve
Abbott driving his Corvette. All turned
times in the 70s.
August’s Second AutoCross
Vrooom, Vroooom Vrooom was the sound
of the Porsche engines warming up on
that warm August 30 Sunday morning.
Many seemed inspired by all the racing
Porsches at the Monterey Historics two
weeks prior! OH, and we had a couple
Corvettes….Bruum, Bruum, Bruum.
The day was going to be VERY
HOT and it was a welcome site to see
the Event Sponsor: Vision Motorsports
crew putting up awnings and chairs.
They always do such a great job and
provided plenty of great food and cool
drinks. Thank You! Dwayne also
brought out a really nice 944 Spec racer
and a couple of other track cars he just
finished. If you want to go racing and
Steve in his GT2G5 at Laguna Seca
not have to mortgage the house, give
Dwayne a call!
With only five events remaining
the CHASE for the year end Class
Cham-pionships is in full swing. The
Walter’s Porsche AutoX Series yearend
awards are based on your top seven
finishing positions for the year. Points
are awarded as follows: 20 points for
1st place, 15 points for 2nd, 12 points
for 3rd, etc. With five events remaining
many class championships are still up for
grabs. A couple classes expected to go
right down to the last event in December
may be class FI where Christian Van
Fleet is holding on by only a three-point
margin over last year champion David
Palmquist. Both drive in modified early
911s. Ted Hoiberg has a chance to catch
Jerry Griffin in class I Prepared.
Ken Fredrickson needs to continue
his winning streak in the last two events
to defeat Cooper Boogs. In class J
Prepared driving his 911 Carrera, Kris
Scheussler appears to only be one win
away from clinching up his first-class
championship. Bonnie Delgado driving
her Boxster must keep up her winning
streak to succeed over first-year driver
Barbara D’Allessandro. In class MS
the championship appears to be locked
up by Hideki Okano but second place
is wide open with only 33 points
separating Akira Kogawa, Roger Ang,
Dennis Power and Tom Tanquary. The
same is true in class MS/S where Kyle
Largent leads Gary Lai, Guy Johnson
and Michael Fagan. Only 32 point
separates these top four places and all
four drivers pilot Boxsters.
Class NS/S is the largest AutoX
class and there have been over 20 drivers
competing. The above mentioned
Cleaning Your Engine – Part 2
By Bev Gould
In my first article about cleaning your
engine (See September 2009 Pando),
we examined how to steam clean the
engine for the first time. Typically, if you
maintain the cleaning routine, you only
have to steam clean the engine once. I
did this on my Denali a few years ago.
That vehicle has been through the snow,
mud and a lot of miles since I did that.
But recently we took it to a mechanic
and he was amazed how clean the engine
was. Tom does a touch up clean on the
engine when he does an oil change or
other maintenance, but it shows you how
a good first-time clean will last.
both work very well at dissolving grease.
Take some WD-40 or Strik and spray it
on the sheet metal. Neither product will
harm your engine, so don’t worry about
getting it on something. You will want
to spray enough to cover the grease, but
not swim in it. However, if you do get
too enthusiastic, too much doesn’t harm
anything except your pocketbook. For
now I am going to refer to the WD-40
product as mentioning both gets a bit
redundant. The key is to find a product
you are comfortable with and use it. I use
these two as I have had good results with
both of them.
motion on the liquid. Use paper towels
to wipe the area down, making sure you
get in the crevices and under the lips of
the metal. This will pick up more “stuff”
and remove any residue from the metal.
This is probably the most gratifying part
of the job. The metal gleans and you can
wipe your fingers along it and not have
to wear gloves. If your painted metal is
in bad shape, you may want to entertain
the thought of painting it after it has been
cleaned. This is what we did; however
you have to take the engine out in order
to do it properly.
You can use products other than
WD-40 or Zymöl’s Strik. Some work
pretty good. I have had such good luck
with these that I do not use anything else
on old dried stubborn grease. By the way,
WD-40 works great on cleaning door
hinges, latches pins etc.
Now you have your engine steam
cleaned and you want to get more
grease and dirt out of the engine.
There are four primary areas of
your engine to attack at this stage.
1) The sheet metal on the sides/front,
2) The painted sides/shelves,
3) The fan/fan shroud and the trickiest-
4) The engine parts.
There are many more areas to clean,
but let’s take this in stages or you might
get overwhelmed. In this story, we will
cover the sheet metal and painted areas
of the engine. Cleaning the engine parts
will probably be an article in itself; we’ll
see.
The sheet metal is probably the
easiest to clean. You got most of the
grease off when you steam cleaned the
engine. A trick I found that works on
removing old built-up grease is WD-40
or Zymöl’s Strik Engine Cleaner. They
Let the WD-40 sit there for a few
minutes and then take one of these old
toothbrushes I have talked about before
and work the toothbrush on the liquid in
small circular motions. This will loosen
most of the old dried grease cohabiting
in your engine. Work the toothbrush
in the crevices and edges along the
sides of the engine. Next, make sure
you have plenty of paper towels, some
disposable gloves (it’s a dirty job) and a
wastebasket. Take the paper towel and
wipe the WD-40 from the sheet metal.
Go over the area with paper towel until
you feel you have removed most of the
grease. Grease can be very stubborn and
you will probably have to go over the
same areas once or twice again to get all
the old grease. Now take a citrus (if you
are using Strik you can skip this step as
it is a bio-product) or Simple Green type
cleaner and spray the area. Take another
old toothbrush and use the same circular
The next area of attack will take
longer and needs more patience. You
steamed cleaned the engine and tried to
get most of the yucky greasy stuff off the
painted areas. Don’t be too concerned if
you did not get it completely clean. The
rough paint and crevices make this a bear
to clean and maintain. Toothbrushes are
especially handy for these rough areas.
Spray the Strik, citrus or Simple Green
cleaner on the paint; let it sit for a few
minutes before putting your toothbrush
into action. Use the same circular motions
we have discussed before to work the dirt
and grease from the paint. Be careful not
to rub too hard, as the paint may be old
and can chip off. It is always a good idea
to have some touch up paint in the garage,
just in case. If you need touch up paint,
go to a good automotive paint store and
they’ll do a color match for you. As you
work the toothbrush, spray more cleaner
on the area. This will add new cleaner to
attack recently uncovered dirt and grease.
Christine Newcomer only trails Adam
points, so expect this one to go down
to the wire. Brian Vaniman and Hideki
Nakano may also step up and are still
in the running. In class O/S Ed McRae
of Walter’s Porsche appears to have
clinched the championship with a string
of seven 1st place finishes. Kathrine Weir
will win her class with six 1st and one
2nd place finish. In Class PS Jonathan
Levey competes in his 993 Turbo and is
a close second behind Jonthan Gerber
Laguna Seca - A Lifelong Dream
During the late 1960s, I began attending
races at Laguna Seca Raceway. I watched
Shelby 289 Cobras trade position with the
Porsche factory 904s who were vying for
the Manufactures Championship. Then
for several years the Trans-Am series was
my favorite. Small block V-8s twisted to
8,000+ rpm. In later years I watched
George Follmer and Mark Donahue drive
Roger Penske’s factory backed Panzer
917s to victory over Bruce McLaren’s
thundering aluminum-block Chevy
powered Can-Am cars, that had
dominated the series for several years.
The sound of all these cars down
shifting and braking hard side by side
as they prepared to accelerate up the
Laguna Seca front straight made the
hair on my arm stand straight up! The
corkscrew was always another great
spot to watch the race. As the cars
crested the hill and jogged to the left,
the track seemed to drop straight down
as they all hammered the throttle!
(Because it does) Boy, What would
that be like? Wheel to wheel, nose to
tail, flat out around Laguna Seca. Well
let me tell you it is great!
Each year, the weekend after the
Monterey Historic Races, the Porsche
Owners Club holds three days of
racing on the Laguna Seca track.
I completed the POC’s Cup Race
Drivers Clinic earlier this year and so
if I was ever going to race wheel to
wheel at my favorite track, this was
my chance. GMG had prepared my
car along with a couple others for the
event. Guy Dryer (GT3 Cup Car),
Gary Tolar (Koni Challenge Car)
and I (996 GT2) were all in the “Red
Group.” This group can be a little
intimidating, as it is the fastest cars
that race in POC and the drivers are
all very skilled. However, POC has
a reputation for being a very safe and
“sane” group.
My son Michael agreed to work
as my pit crew. He would spend
most of the weekend changing tires,
checking tire temps, adjusting shocks
and making sure I was all strapped in
and my HANS device and helmet were
secure. Friday was practice and the car
was a little “twitchy.” It was somewhat
expected, as the car had new shocks,
suspension setup and a new “go fast”
differential. We realigned the car and
thought we had the problem cured late
that night, but in Saturday morning
practice we were still scratching our
heads. With the help of the GMG
Team, the problem was resolved and
by Saturday afternoon qualifying we
were ready to go. My goal for the
first race was to stay out of trouble
and just finish. We once the green flag
fell it seemed silly to just finish. We had
qualified 18th out of 23 cars. By the end
of the 12-lap race, we had worked our
way up to 11th.
Sunday morning we were at the
track early. Everything felt right. The
morning practice felt very good as
Michael had changed the tire pressures
and made a couple shock adjustments.
I was getting comfortable with the
new-found handling of the GT2. Prior
to qualifying, Michael made one more
shock adjustment. I could tell by the
first two turns he had them spot on! We
were three seconds faster and able to
qualify 9th for Sunday’s race.
As we formed up for the start I
had four of the fastest Porsches directly
ahead of me. I took a deep breath and
then it hit me. Here I was on the warmup
lap with 23 other Porsches at Laguna
Seca Raceway! As we rounded the last
turn to take the green flag, the hair on my
arms stood straight up AGAIN! I could
see my son Michael out of the corner of
my eye jumping up and down cheering.
This was it! A lifelong dream and best
of all it was shared with my son!
Till next month. Have Fun!
On a warm August day, 138 OCR
members in 76 cars gathered at Jack and
Margaret Brown’s hangar at Fullerton
Airport to begin the 9th Annual Hearts
and Garages Tour. This tour is an annual
progressive dinner that is a fund-raiser
for our Region’s designated charity.
Check-in went very smoothly for
a large group despite the warm day,
thanks to the efforts of Judy Lech and
Gloria Moore at registration, and Larry
Moore and Ken Fredrickson manning
the gate. After parking, the members
got a chance to view Jack’s cars in the
hangar, which was amply decorated
with Porsche pictures and memorabilia.
Jack’s friend and noted Porsche artist
Steve Anderson had done many of the
pictures on the hangar walls, and he
also came out to join in the festivities.
Steve gave each participant a poster.
The Porsches of the participants
were lined up in front of multiple
hangars, which created an impromptu
car show for everyone to enjoy. Besides
the Porsches in the hangar, there was
a vintage Corvette, a ‘57 Chevy and a
unique Alfa Romeo coupe that had been
featured in Road and Track magazine.
After devouring the antipasto, salad and
bruchetta (supplied by Mulberry Street
restaurant), visiting with friends and
checking out the cars, we all departed, in
true Porsche fashion, for the next stop.
The second destination was in
Irvine, where the main course of
Hawaiian BBQ was eaten al fresco
outside Bryan Pepper and Heather
Fera’s garage. Umbrellas and canopies
had been erected to shield folks from
the afternoon sun, and we were all
grateful the previous week’s heat wave
had ended. It was a sumptuous
repast, and everyone enjoyed
the distinctive Hawaiian flavors.
There were three different model
Boxsters in the garage, including a
RS60 Spyder Anniversary Edition,
and each had an informational sheet
explaining its distinctive features.
Then it was a dash off to
San Clemente (there was that onramp
grand prix again) for dessert,
coffee, German chocolate cake
and apple at the home of Michael
and Shelley Reissmueller. The
morning’s wind and rain in South
County had cleared and everyone
enjoyed a beautiful evening in
the back yard facing towards the
Pacific Ocean.
A special thank you to our
hosts, who graciously made our
event extremely enjoyable.
(Cont. from pg. 9)
took us fishing for Marlin. Well---what
a time we had! I was fortunate to hook a
big―I mean big―Black Marlin. In fact,
at 983 lbs., it was the 2nd largest Marlin
ever caught in Cabo San Lucas. I wanted
to have it mounted and bring it home, but
Sue said that it was so big it wouldn’t fit
anywhere in the house! So, it is mounted
on the wall at Marina Sol Hotel in Cabo.
Also, about that time, I wanted to
get back into racing cars so I sold the
Weissach Coupe to my neighbor and
purchased two racing Go Karts for my
son and me to race. We had a good time
racing for a number of years until I ended
up crashing my Kart in practice, up at
Jim Hall’s track in Ventura. I ran into the
Start Tower and broke six ribs, front and
back, broke my collarbone and shoulder
blade and punctured my lung. After
three days in Intensive Care, 13 days
in the hospital and over two months to
recover, we sold the Go Karts! All I have
left now is a slight twitch―just kidding!
After recovering, at the recommendation
of my orthopedist, I began competing
in Sporting Clay shotgun competitions
across California and Nevada and today,
in addition, I occasionally compete in
Cowboy Action Shooting events.
After a short time, I came across a
1965 Shelby GT350 that an acquaintance
wanted to sell. I couldn’t resist! We
had a great time showing the Shelby at
Concours events with much success.
About this time my son, Ryan, was able
to start driving and of course, he wanted
to drive the Shelby. Not! Subsequently,
we decided to sell the Shelby and bought
a 1965 Mustang Fastback that he and I
restored to 1965 Shelby “R” Model racing
specifications. During this process, Ryan
was still able to drive the Mustang to high
Bob and Ryan driving the Cobra and
Mustang at Willow Springs in 2007
school! When Ryan went away to
college, the Mustang was fitted with
a new racing engine and we finished
up all the required elements for us
to go racing!
Since 2000, I have been racing
the Mustang and for a short time,
a special Shelby Cobra in Vintage
events that have been held at
Willow Springs, Laguna Seca, Auto
Club Speedway, Coronado, Miller
Sports Park in Salt Lake City and
Hallet Raceway in Tulsa, Oklahoma
among others. As many of you know,
vintage racing is not all about winning;
it is the spirit of competition in vintage
cars.
In 2005, we decided to take European
delivery of a new 2006 BMW 550i,
which would become my daily driver.
In three years I have put over 80,000
miles on it! What a terrific experience
the European delivery is. We toured
Germany and Austria for over a week.
The autobahn, as many of you know, is
great! Also in 2005, after a number of
years without a Porsche, I began to look
for a suitable replacement. As a result,
I found our current car, the Orange
1974 Carrera Coupe, in Pennsylvania. I
surprised Sue with a trip to New York
City for Valentine’s Day and, oh by the
way, we were also going to look at a car
near Scranton. The car was everything
I was looking for---it was kept inside
the owner’s house along with another
Porsche. Three other lesser Porsches
were relegated to his garage! The car
was stunning! It was love at first sight;
the deal was made and the car was
transported to Southern
California shortly thereafter.
The Carrera is a
matching numbers car with
60,000 original miles and
one of only 528 that were
imported from Germany.
We immediately rejoined the
PCA and have thoroughly
enjoyed not only meeting
so many new friends and
Porsche enthusiasts, but the
many Orange Coast Region
events that we have been able
to attend. We have enjoyed
showing the car at numerous
Bob, Sue, Ryan and Amanda with the
Weissach Coupe at an Orange Coast
Concours in the 1980s.
Region 8 Concours including the 2007
Parade in San Diego and also enjoy the
various rallies and driving tours that
Armand has set up like Hearst Castle
and the recent Monterey Historics cruise
up the coast. The competition is great;
the roads fantastic and the commaderie,
priceless!
The experience that Sue and I have
had over the last 30+ years with our cars
and competing in one form or the other,
especially with the six Porsches we have
owned (Sue’s favorite of all our cars)
has truly been terrific! We look forward
to many more years of participating
in many activities and events with our
friends in the Orange Coast Region.
Rice’s Ramblings
Story and photos by Lee Rice
Lee Rice showing his 911 at Breakfast Club
Evo-Blue, my 911 of 38 years finished
its 2008-2009 major update and upgrade
with the installation of one of my newly
rebuilt engines. This engine has a bit of
history in my family as it is the engine
I installed in my brother’s 1987 Carrera
back in1995.
This engine (a M30/69) is a 1992
3.3Liter CIS, Jetronic C-2 Turbo engine.
It was installed with all the electrical
and emission systems intact and fully
operational.
However, we also decided to
enhance the performance by upgrading
to our own version of a Turbo S. What
we did is what any 930 Turbo owner can
do to improve their own street, track, and
daily driver 930.
Back in 1995 I did the following:
• First off I had the crankshaft
checked for cracks, straightness, and
wear. It was perfect. Then we did a clean
out of all the oil galleys, finally we had
the crank micro polished and balanced.
• The rods got checked for alignment
(perfect) and were then machined to new
standard specifications and also match
balanced. The rods were then installed
with standard bearings and Raceware ®
rod bolts & nuts.
• The crankcase was checked for
warping and all oil galleys cleaned out
and re-sealed. All piston oil ‘squirters’
were replaced with new units (1.5 mm).
• Case studs were replaced with
Raceware ® studs, forged washers, and
12 point nuts.
• The Turbo Oil pump was
disassembled to check for wear: (perfect)
and reassembled.
• Pistons and Cylinders for 1992
were upgraded MAHLE ® items. The
fully finned 97mm cylinders did not
have head gasket grooves, but instead
had flat tops for a new stainless steel
flat sealing ring that must be replaced at
every tear-down. It was then coated with
a silicon application. During the last 15
years I have yet to see any flame path
blown through this flat ring design, even
when severe misuse of over boost was
known to occur!
• I also did replace the Piston
Rings.
Fast forward now to my 2008 rebuild,
I replaced the Pistons and Cylinders
with newer MAHLE 98mm fully
finned cylinders and 7.4:1 compression
MAHLE pistons and, once again, used
the flat stainless head to cylinder rings
This time around the Cylinder
Heads got a good valve job, replacing the
factory valve guides with harder, longer
wearing American made-valve guides. I
then lapped the valves to the seats.
This time however, we made one
major upgrade: we increased intake port
size from 32 mm to 40 mm. and replaced
the plastic intake fuel injector intake
stacks with aluminum intake stacks
bored out to 40 mm. You can only bore
the plastic ones safely to 36 mm. We
chose to use 40 mm aluminum intakes
as we were going to change cams and
exhaust systems for greater breathing
capacity. Along with porting the cylinder
heads we also enlarged the small intake
manifold passages to match the heads
to the new 40 mm stacks. During the
assembly process I used factory work
shop methods to put this engine back
together.
[Note that I think the internal
overhaul described above is the standard
practice method to rebuild and upgrade
every 911 engine to insure a safe long
life.]
This time we chose to use 964
camshafts as these give the 930 CIS
engine a bit more push off low rpm than
the SC cams did and they also have more
pronounced upper end power compared
to the SC cams. I also added the turbo
scavenge oil pump drive to the left
camshaft. The right side 964 camshaft
has a drive for the hydraulic pump (for
the 1992 C-2) that we didn’t need for the
1987 chassis so the cam drive could have
been cut off. However, we left the pump
drive on the cam.
All the cam drive wheels, gears,
chains, and ramps were perfect so they
were reused. In 2008 I upgraded the cam
system with Aasco valve springs and
retainers and replaced all rockers, shafts,
adjusters, and hardware. As this engine
was to be smog tested, we had everything
installed as delivered in 1992.
Included in this system is a unique
ignition system called “EZ-69.” This is
a crank- signaled hybrid unit that mounts
in the engine compartment exactly where
the standard CDI box used to be located.
The ignition distributor for this system
is a CLOCKWISE rotating distributor,
strictly for High Tension current to each
spark plug cable. There is no timing
adjustment provision for the EZ-69.
Timing can be checked by applying
vacuum or no vacuum to the EZ-69 unit
and revving the engine to 4,000 rpm and
at which point you check for 40-degrees
ignition advance. Then you must apply
boost pressure and check for 21degrees
advance @ 4,000 rpm. This is a simple
system which works pretty well most of
the time.
However, it does not like any boost
higher than stock as the EZ-69 unit then
goes bad. It is sealed and non-repairable
and expensive. As this was a limited in
use item (1992-1994), it was later found
not worth the trouble and expense to use
on the upgraded engine. Some years later
I reverted to using a standard 1978-1989
CDI box and coil system with a specially
fabricated ignition distributor. If I had
known the weakness of the EZ-69
system earlier on, I would have replaced
the crankshaft ignition distributor drive
gear with a C.C.W. (Counter Clock
Wise) distributor gear. Then I could
have simply installed a 1983-1989 Turbo
ignition distributor with idle retard, boost
retard, and vacuum advance.
Because of the C.W. rotation of the
C-2 Turbo ignition distributor drive, I
ended up making a special distributor
from three others:
“Amazing! I didn’t think it was possible to make the seats
look like new!” (Barry, Fullerton)
Barry was just like many of you; he loved his car and wanted it to look its’ best and was
disappointed with the way his leather seats looked. They weren’t in bad condition but they
were showing the signs of wear. He didn’t want to spend the $1500.00 + labor* or more that
it would take to replace the leather and so he thought he would just have to live with it. He
didn’t and neither do you! He called Pioneer Leather Restoration, Inc. Since his leather
was in good condition except for the appearance, we came to his home and re-applied the
finish coating that is found on all upholstery leather. Three hours and $295.00** later you see
what his reaction was.
2009 Orange Coast Region Board Member Elections
Story by Garey Cooper
Your Orange Coast Region (OCR) is in
Zone 8 of the Porsche Club of America
(PCA). In PCA there are 13 Zones
in the United States and Canada, and
interestingly there are also 13 Regions
in our Zone 8. Each of the Regions has
a board of leaders who take their role as
volunteers to help organize the Porsche
Club activities in their area. Each Region
has its own bylaws and, while most are
very similar, there are some differences.
Our Orange Coast Region has
been around for quite a while as an
independent car club, and closing in on
the half century mark as this year draws
to a close. During this time we’ve been
very fortunate in that, while from time
to time things can get contentious and
the economy can vary, there have been
people who have been willing to step up
and do their part for the enjoyment of
their club. This includes both men and
women as the club has in the past had
at least two female Presidents for the
region. The only unifying theme among
all of the past and present board members
is the desire to play a leading role in the
ongoing running of the OCR.
The OCR Region is usually the
second largest in our Zone; typically San
Diego is the largest. And it can be said we
are one of the most active Regions, not
only in our Zone but in the entire PCA.
Just looking at our Calendar should give
us all a sense of pride in the dedication of
the outgoing Board Members and give us
pause to wish the candidates coming in
well. After all they are the catalysts that
drive the chemistry of our club forward
year by year. Our club has a total of seven
elected members on the board. They
each serve a two-year staggered term,
with four elected in one year and three
the next, so there is always some overlap
to provide continunity in the board. The
other board members who fill roles like
Pando editor, membership chairman,
autocross chairman, etc., may or may not
include one of these elected people. The
four officers must be elected, according
to our bylaws.
Each elected member position is
held for two years and in a neat piece of
symmetry we have four candidates for
the four open positions that appear for
2010 and 2011. The general membership
elects the Board Members and the
ultimate decision on which person fills
each executive position is decided by the
Board at its monthly meeting following
the election. This is in compliance
with our current bylaws. This does not
preclude anyone voting from expressing
an opinion about any one candidate’s
ability or aptitude for a specific open
position.
The open positions for the new year
are President, Vice President, Treasurer
and Secretary. As President Armand
Gastelo is stepping down this year and
not running for a new Board Position, Ex
Officio by our bylaws, he becomes Past
President and will remain in that capacity
for the next two years. Our current Vice
President, Nicole Boggs is choosing to be
re-elected again and she should be familiar
to most of our members for having been
very active in her past two years. We also
have Porsche family members Tom and
Phyllis Meng who have been respectively
our Secretary and Treasurer for the past
two years. They are not running for reelection
in this cycle but we certainly
do expect to see them around the club
for some time to come and thank them
for their dedication and assistance while
performing their functions.
The candidates for the Board this
year are:
Nicole Boggs. As I mentioned above, our
Ms. Boggs has been a bundle of energy
and active in Club affairs over the past
two years as Vice President of the OCR.
Nicole was a Featured Member in the
Pandemonium this last year (her husband
Cooper is also a part of the picture here).
Eric Budai. Eric was also Featured
Member this year in the Pando and he and
his family appeared on the cover of the
September issue. Eric has been active in
several areas of club activities, especially
in Autocros. He is a friendly face at many
club events and would like to “pay back”
for the fun he has had as an OCR member
by serving on the Board.
David Piper. David is an OCR member
with a passion for the club and has been
very interested in helping us move to the
next level. He is interested in a Board
position and would like to take up the
interests of his fellow members as their
representative in the operations of the
OCR. He is well versed in the financial
aspects that is necessary to a well-run
volunteer organization.
Gordon Williams. Gordon has been an
OCR member for the past three years and
has volunteered on occasion to help out
in some club events. He has corporate
multi-national experience in his business
life and would like to be a part of the club
going forward at the Board level. Gordon
is volunteering to help lead the club into
its next half century.
The Orange Coast Region needs to
acknowledge the contributions of the
Nominating Committee for this year’s
slate of candidates. These people are
Steve Eguina, Fast Freddy Fredrickson
and Jerry Muno. Their efforts are
appreciated. They are also working on
filling other non-elected positions on the
board. If you would like to serve, or at
least like more information regarding a
position on the board, please contact one
of these committee members.
To close we should note a rather
unpleasant fact. That is the number of
votes received from the membership at
large is usually relatively small. I think
that many people look at the names of the
candidates and knowing them, are quite
happy to vote without returning a ballot,
perhaps by “acquiescence.” While this
is not a bad thing, it would certainly be
refreshing to see the number of returned
ballots increase this year, so don’t forget
to vote it―only takes a moment!
Please return your Ballot by
Rice’s Ramblings (Cont. from pg. 27)
1. A C.W. rotation 3.0L Turbo distributor
housing and mechanical advance unit
2. An internal timing plate unit from
a 1978-1982 930 Turbo
3. A 1983-1989 “Dual Vacuum Box”
This involves some detailed shop
work to make everything operate, but
in 12+ years of service, it has worked
perfectly reliably just like a late 1983-
1989 Turbo distributor and it makes a big
difference in performance as well.
The CIS Fuel Injection unit was
stock for many years and worked trouble
free while passing every smog test
with ease. Later, when this engine was
owned by a client, it was upgraded to the
European (RoW) 930/66 fuel system as
this was reported to make more power. I
didn’t believe it―back then!
But the new owner insisted on this
upgrade and I replaced the emission
friendly aluminum Fuel Distributor with
its matching tiny Fuel Lines, and smaller
Fuel Nozzles. I then installed the black
iron RoW Fuel Distributor, larger Fuel
Lines, and larger Fuel nozzles. Was I
amazed at the throttle response! It had
more. It was noticeably more powerful
than before! The stock C-2 Turbo AIS
(Air Injection System) and Cat was used
and never failed to pass smog.
Let me tell you how good this system
is. Next time.
Godspeed.
Cleaning Your Engine (Cont. from pg. 14)
Paper towel does not work that great on
this part of the engine except to mop up
the excess cleaner. Do not try to rub the
paper towel as it will shred and become
a big mess. Use an old towel or Handy
Wipe or Microfiber towel that you can
dip in a bucket to rinse and use again.
Make sure you get under the motor
mounts and way in the back. The area
under the oil filler is a perfect hotel for
grease and dirt―kicked up from the fan.
Another area that gets forgotten is under
you deck lid. This can get an oily film
on it from the engine as heat, water, dirt
and other materials are mixed together
and then rise up to rest under the deck
lid. Once you have gone over the painted
surfaces, go over them again. The second
pass will clean up any old debris that was
not picked up the first time and you will
be surprised how much cleaner it will
look. If any paint flaked off, this would
be a good time to touch up the paint.
The area is clean of dirt and grease so
the paint will adhere to the surface much
better and will not flake off the next time
you clean it.
You noticed I did not say to use WD-
40. I do not use the WD-40 on these areas
because the rough surface traps more
WD-40 than I am able to clean up. If you
have nothing to lose and the surface is a
mess, give the WD-40 a shot. Just make
sure you use the soapy cleaners to clean it
all up. WD-40 has petroleum base, which
could keep new paint from adhering and
attract more dirt in the long run.
Next time we’ll talk about cleaning
the fan and fan shroud area. The fan is
an area that needs constant attention and
I will cover some of the moving parts
around the fan shroud as part of this
article.
Editor’s Notes (Cont. from pg. 7)
Autocross
By the time you are reading this column
we will still have three autocross events
left in 2009. These are on October 11,
November 8, and December 6. Many
club members are concerned about
running their cars in so called “speed”
events, but there is little to go wrong in
an autocross. In fact your Porsche was
made for day-in and day-out running and
is probably the most in its element on the
autocross track. Some people also worry
about their competitiveness at a driving
event, but there is just as much fun to be
had finishing in less than first place (I
should know). There are even instructors
on hand at EVERY autocross to help
first-timers, so you don’t have to wait for
our annual Training Wheels event to get
an initial indoctrination to the track side
personality of your Porsche.
Party Time
Make room in your calendar for the
annual Christmas Party, although I think
we’re supposed to call it the Holiday
Party in the modern era. The venue is as
of yet not set but this year it is supposed
to be happening on the 4th of December.
This party is always a fun one and there
is usually a pretty nice set of items to
be bid on during the silent auction. (I
confess to speaking out loud during
these). Pay attention to the OCR web site
as well, because Nicole Cooper Boggs is
trying to put together a Halloween party
this year which we may not have time to
fully publicize.
Vote Early And Vote Often
Elsewhere in the magazine you’ll see a
slate of candidates for your OCR Board
for next year. It is depressingly true that
typically we attract few voters who take
the time to return their ballots. It would
be nice to see this year be a little different
and garner a larger return. Besides a key
to the OCR Sauna (I hope they fix the
thermostat), your representatives make
up the core that provides the ideas and
staffing of our major events. They deserve
your support, so after the vote a nice little
pat on the back is also good for morale,
but be careful they may still have some
minor steam burns!
Oh Darn
Last month’s column omitted to actually
name a major new OCR sponsor! In my
mention of the Trip to Italy set up by
our President, Armand Gastelo, I said
we left from a sponsor’s location but I
didn’t name them; it was Auto Collusion
Centers in Anaheim. I am sorry for the
omission!
At Last And Least
Don’t forget our monthly Breakfast
meetings at Original Mike’s in Santa Ana
on the first Saturday, and our informal
get together at Krispi Kreme on the 3rd
Saturday. These are lots of fun and the
only chance you may get in an entire
month to see 80 or so Porsches in one
location. If you do come by, make sure to
look me up and say “Howdy!” I hope to
see you there.
