Delta Education: FOSS

The Delta Education Science Program for Virginia, a program that includes a Virginia Planning Guide for each grade

level, current FOSS kits, DSM Kits and Delta’s content readers, has been submitted to the Virginia Department of

Education for approval. A complete SOL correlation for each grade level is available.

I am working on a correlation to the SOLs for the new FOSS, Third Edition kits. However, because the program is

not complete, I do not have a complete correlation. I am basing the recommended kits on the current version of

FOSS and the similar FOSS, Third Edition titles. The investigations and content covered in the current version and

the new FOSS Third Edition are similar.

FOSS books for students are available in multiple forms. In the kit, there are 32 student versions and 1 big book

Delta Education and FOSS are proven leaders in elementary hands-on science programs and informational text.

FOSS is a research-based program, originally funded by the National Science Foundation. Each FOSS module is field

tested in many classrooms around the country. FOSS is used in over 100,000 classrooms in the United States.

On (Third Edition), you will find an e-Guide for the teacher, e-Science Resources for students,

interactive whiteboard resources, virtual simulations, tutorials, pdfs of Teacher Resources chapters, information

for parents, Teacher Preparation videos and additional resources.

Real world connections

Teachers are encouraged to have students use graphic organizers in their science notebooks. Suggestions for using

graphic organizers are sometimes included in the investigation lesson plans. Additional support for using graphic

organizers can be found in the Teacher Resources binder, Science-Centered Language Development chapter.

In FOSS, students develop vocabulary as they develop conceptual understanding. Strategies for introducing

vocabulary are embedded within FOSS lessons and scaffolds are provided in the Science-Centered Language

Development chapter found in the Teacher Resources binder.

FOSS books are not leveled.

Delta and Seeds of Science content readers are leveled using Fountas and Pinnell Matching Books to Readers


Kindergarten assessment is embedded through the investigations. Teachers observe students at centers and

science notebook entries to assess understanding. In grades 1-2, teachers observe students during active

investigation, assess science notebook entries, and provide formally assess with I-checks for each investigation.

FOSS, Third Edition uses a multimodal approach to science processes and content, using concrete (hands-on),

representation (illustrations, models, and diagrams) and symbolic (text-based) representations.

Although not explicitly written using the 5-E Model, when going through the instructional design of each

investigation, model users will be able to identify the five phases of the model.

FOSS utilizes text, video, and outdoor experiences to help students connect science concepts learned in a

classroom to the real world.

Grades 1-2, Investigation I-checks

FOSS supports deep understanding of science concepts and addresses several SOLS deeply. FOSS does not address

all SOLs, thus the use of selected Delta and Seeds of Science content readers provide additional coverage of SOLs.

In the Investigation Guide, “Teaching Children” sections provide teachers insight into conceptions and

misconceptions that students have at a developmental stage. This information is based on the research and field

testing of the modules with students across the country.

Questions using a wide variety of thinking processes are included within the flow of the lesson and to support

student discourse and classroom discussions.

On, students may receive additional instructional support through the use of the virtual

investigations, e-Science Resource book, streaming videos, and virtual tutorials.

FOSS is a kit-based science program that incorporates reading, writing, technology, the environment and

assessment into the instructional design.

FOSS Investigations for grades K-2 can be implemented in whole-class settings or in centers. FOSS provides

suggested breakpoints for investigations that may require extensive time.
