A new advantage to providing fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

informati<strong>on</strong> as included in <strong>the</strong> Revised <strong>Flora</strong> are<br />

<strong>the</strong> useful guidelines noted <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> herbarium<br />

sheets <strong>of</strong> related plants; <strong>the</strong>y have pointed out <strong>the</strong><br />

easy way to identifying <strong>the</strong> particular locati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong><br />

a described species; some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> observati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

briefly made in <strong>the</strong>se sheets have also helped in<br />

knowing <strong>the</strong> ecological preferences <strong>of</strong> a species in<br />

relati<strong>on</strong> to its envir<strong>on</strong>ment in <strong>the</strong> field.<br />

CONCLUSION<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> summarised accounts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> secti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

discussed above underline <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>-going<br />

development <strong>of</strong> interest in <strong>the</strong> systematic botany <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Lanka</strong>n plants in <strong>the</strong>ir post-Trimenal<br />

period.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> extensive work involved in <strong>the</strong>se accounts<br />

has accomplished as much as would have been<br />

d<strong>on</strong>e in a similar effort by an active, differentlyc<strong>on</strong>ceived<br />

project such as ‘A Botanical Survey <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Lanka</strong>’ <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> time; and <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> this<br />

revisi<strong>on</strong> have thus built up a close approach to a<br />

semi-m<strong>on</strong>ographic flora <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Lanka</strong> which well<br />

exemplifies Frodin’s (1977) general c<strong>on</strong>cept “that<br />

a <strong>Flora</strong> should act as a compendium and a<br />

repository <strong>of</strong> informati<strong>on</strong> about <strong>the</strong> plants <strong>of</strong> an<br />

area, and not solely as a practical handbook for<br />

identificati<strong>on</strong> and essential informati<strong>on</strong>.”<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> resultant accounts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fourteen<br />

volumes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Revised Handbook to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Flora</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Ceyl<strong>on</strong>, while assembling an additi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

compendium <strong>of</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> our angiospermplants,<br />

have recorded in <strong>the</strong>ir course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> midtwentieth<br />

and early twenty-first centuries, <strong>the</strong><br />

increasing development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> systematic botany<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Lanka</strong> plants --- a reminder <strong>of</strong> what<br />

would still remain to be d<strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> this systematic<br />

study <strong>of</strong> our remaining tropical flora <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> future<br />
