Of the Money of<br />

the Formofans.<br />

Japannefe have three forts of Money,<br />

whereof fome is made of Gold, and thd<br />

Other two forts are of Silver and Brafs. All thefe<br />

kinds of Money are current in the Ifle oi Formo-<br />

Ja ^ and befides therh , they have fome of Iroh<br />

and Steel.<br />

The higheft piece of Gold that's coin'd at Jdpan<br />

is caird Rochmoo , and is in value nine Copans<br />

and a half A Copan is a piece of coin'd<br />

Gold worth feven Taillos, and aTaillo is a piece<br />

of Silver Coin worth 58 Stivers, according to the<br />

'Dutch way of reckoning, (as Varemm fays,) and<br />

very near worth an Englifl) Crown : But the<br />

Brafs Money is of little value, as the Cax^^ which<br />

are only worth about two Pence of Engl'ijh Money<br />

-, and yet there are half Caxa and quarter<br />

Cax£ •, but this laft kind of Money is only us'd<br />

in Japan arid not in formofa.<br />

But in the IHe formofa^ a Rochmoo is valu'd only<br />

at eight Copan s^ and each Copan at fix TaiU<br />

los , and a TaiUo at forty eight Stivers ^ not<br />

that thefe feveral pieces of Money weigh lefs in<br />

Formofa in proportion to the Silver , for they<br />

are of the fame weight, but becaufe Gold doth<br />

not bear<br />

the fame proportion with Silver in forinofa<br />

as it doth in Japan ^ for Gold is more plentiful<br />

in our Ifland than Silver , and on the conttary<br />

, Silver is more plentiful than Gold in Japan<br />

: And befides them , the For ??w fans have a<br />

piece of Steel Money , which they call Colan ,<br />
