Should we bo<strong>the</strong>r about l<strong>and</strong> <strong>ab<strong>and</strong>onment</strong> ?<br />

YES.<br />

It will cause:<br />

A loss of species associated with extensive farm<strong>in</strong>g systems.<br />

The replacement of species-rich open l<strong>and</strong> assemblages with<br />

species-poor shrubl<strong>and</strong> assemblages.<br />

Afforestation of ab<strong>and</strong>oned l<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> secondary forest re-growth<br />

will <strong>in</strong>crease species richness at <strong>the</strong> local level, but <strong>the</strong>se will<br />

consist mostly of widespread <strong>Europe</strong>an species (ma<strong>in</strong>ly for birds).<br />

As l<strong>and</strong>scapes become covered with forests, diversity at<br />

<strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>scape level will decrease because of <strong>the</strong> loss of<br />

region-specific open l<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> shrubl<strong>and</strong> vertebrate<br />

assemblages.


Should we bo<strong>the</strong>r about <strong>fire</strong> ?<br />

IT DEPENDS...<br />

It depends on <strong>the</strong> <strong>fire</strong> regime:<br />

At small scale (relative to l<strong>and</strong>scape extent) <strong>fire</strong> may act as a<br />

source of l<strong>and</strong>scape heterogeneity, <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g habitat that would<br />

not be available o<strong>the</strong>rwise, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g species diversity <strong>in</strong><br />

relation to a <strong>fire</strong>-excluded ab<strong>and</strong>oned l<strong>and</strong>scape.<br />

In contrast, extensive <strong>fire</strong>s may cause l<strong>and</strong>scape homogenization,<br />

creat<strong>in</strong>g vast areas of shrubl<strong>and</strong> with species-poor communities.<br />

Prescribed <strong>fire</strong>, along with extensive graz<strong>in</strong>g, might m<strong>in</strong>imize <strong>the</strong><br />

impact of l<strong>and</strong> <strong>ab<strong>and</strong>onment</strong>, by prevent<strong>in</strong>g large scale <strong>fire</strong>s <strong>and</strong><br />

creat<strong>in</strong>g habitat for vertebrates dependent on shrubl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> some<br />

types of grassl<strong>and</strong>/ extensive farm<strong>in</strong>g systems.<br />

However, <strong>Mediterranean</strong> l<strong>and</strong>scapes managed this way will never<br />

atta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> diversity levels of l<strong>and</strong>scape mosaics composed of<br />

extensive farm<strong>in</strong>g systems, shrubl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> forests.


But what happens with o<strong>the</strong>r components of<br />

<strong>Mediterranean</strong> <strong>Europe</strong>an biodiversity ?<br />
