Programmes recorded onto the Hard Disk Drive can be fast copied — extremely
fast! — to DVD-R and DVD-RW discs. And your final recording on the
DVD-R/DVD-RW disc will be of identical quality as the original recording for you
to delight in, time and time again.
A one-hour programme recorded in EP recording mode takes only about
2.5 minutes to transfer to a DVD-R disc (‘Video Mode (DVD Video Mode)’)! For
DVD-RW discs, you have the option to copy in ‘VR Mode (DVD Video Recording
Mode)’ or ‘Video Mode (DVD Video Mode)’, so you have full control over your
desired picture quality. The copying speed varies depending on the recording mode
(EP, LP, SP, FINE) and the media. With a 4x DVD-R disc, the copying speed —
compared to the real-time length of a recording in ‘Video Mode (DVD Video Mode)’
— ranges from 4x to 24x speed, while a 2x DVD-RW disc covers 2x to 12x.
Suppose a recording made on the HDD is too big — such as those made in
highest quality FINE mode — to fit on the disc? Now it’s possible to re-encode
the original HDD recording in a lower recording mode while making a copy to a
DVD disc in real time.

backup disc is exactly the same as the original disc. As

until you have caught up with the live broadcast!
Simultaneous Recording and Playback.

Just because you’re watching a movie you’ve recently recorded, doesn’t mean
your recording function is out of commission. With Pioneer’s new DVD recorders

programme material.
You can record material on the DVR-5100H-S’s internal Hard Disk Drive at the
same time that you are watching another programme recorded earlier on the

With Pioneer DVD recorders, the fun never runs out. Record from a digital camcorder.
Transfer your existing videotape to DVD, or record high-quality TV. The new models
also feature PAL/NTSC recording, and the built-in tuner is compatible with the
European broadcasting systems. With PAL/NTSC recording, you can record PAL
broadcasts in PAL and NTSC in NTSC onto a DVD disc. With the DVR-5100H-S, it is
possible to store both formats simultaneously on the Hard Disk Drive.
PDC/VPS/VIDEO Plus+.
Pioneer DVD recorders are crammed with features for smooth recording from
terrestrial or cable TV. They record digital broadcasts from a connected settop
box or TV with integrated digital tuner. Using the VIDEO Plus+ number of
the VIDEO Plus+ system, the time and channel settings, recording date, start,
and stop are set automatically for recordings using the built-in tuner. You can
programme up to 32 timer recordings up to a month in advance. And to make
sure you don’t miss the end of programmes that may run late (a live football
match, for example), you can take advantage of the PDC/VPS system for up to 8 of
your timer recordings (only when the corresponding codes are transmitted by the
broadcaster).
Note: This DVD recorder features an integrated TV tuner that is capable of handling analogue TV
broadcasting signals via the ‘RF antenna input’ according to the following TV standards: PAL B/G —
PAL I — SECAM L. The specifications of the integrated TV tuner do not restrict the ability of this DVD
Recorder to accept PAL/SECAM video via its ‘analogue video inputs’ from other sources, such as settop
box TV receivers, or via the digital i.LINK input.

Record from a digital camcorder (digital A/V input) via i.LINK.
Dubbing from digital sources to the Hard Disk Drive (with DVR-5100H-S) or DVD discs is simplicity itself. Just connect your camcorder to the
DV IN/OUT connector on the front of the DVD recorder. Then use the remote controller — and Pioneer’s easy-to-use GUI — to control both
machines. You can dub, play back, pause, fast-forward, and rewind. To restore some of your homemade DVDs to the camcorder, just plug into the
DV IN/OUT connector and you’re ready. One DV cable is all you need to input/output A/V data and control signals (some models of
camcorders/decks may not be supported).

Picture Quality Adjustment Features.
With the Video Adjust menu, you can set the picture quality to your taste for the
built-in TV tuner and other external inputs. Changes can be made to brightness and
colour noise reduction, in order to achieve the best possible recorded picture
quality. When watching TV or other external sources, settings can be adjusted to
the specific nature of the source. That means you can even make images from an
old videotape look better when you dub it to a disc. There is a wide selection of
pre-defined settings, or use the Video Adjust menu to create your own customised

An Advanced MPEG Video Encoder.
When it comes to stunning video, Pioneer shines. Advanced encoder technology is
why. By combining Single-Pass Variable Bit Rate Control with Multi-Resolution,
Pioneer DVD recorders can perform ideal video image compression encoding. The
result? Dramatically improved picture quality. On ‘VR Mode (DVD Video Recording
Mode)’ DVD-RW discs, multi-resolution technology uses three-quarter and
two-third resolution settings, in addition to full- and half-resolution. This allows for
less abrupt changes in quality over longer recording times.
Pure RGB Video output.
For absolute top-quality video, Pioneer DVD recorders feature RGB output via
Euro-SCART. RGB video out ensures the purest, high-quality images, without loss
of detail. Depending on your TV set’s capabilities, you’re able to select the best
matching video output quality on the Euro-SCART connector between composite
Video, S-Video and RGB.
CPRM (Content Protection for Recordable Media).
What is CPRM? CPRM is a content protection system required for the recording of
‘copy once’ broadcast programmes. CPRM stands for ‘Content Protection for
Recordable Media’. All Pioneer DVD recorders are CPRM compatible, which means
that you can record copy-once broadcast programmes but you cannot then make a
copy of those recordings. CPRM recordings can only be made on CPRM-compliant
DVD-RW discs formatted in ‘VR Mode (DVD Video Recording Mode)’, and CPRM
recordings can only be played on players that are specifically compatible with
CPRM.
Note: CD-R/RW DVD-R/RW Playback: Discs may not be played back because of the following reasons: recording characteristics of recorder/characteristics of disc/scratch and dust on disc/dust and
condensation on pickup lens or others.
CD-R/RW Playback: CD-R/RW discs for Audio recorded in CD Audio, VideoCD or MP3/WMA audio or JPEG format can be played back. Unfinalised discs except those in CD Audio formatting cannot be played
back.
Note: When playing DTS-encoded (CDs, DVDs), noise is output from the analogue stereo outputs. To avoid possible damage to the audio system, the consumer should take proper precautions when the
analogue stereo outputs of the DVD recorder are connected to an amplification system. To enjoy DTS Digital Surround playback, an external 5.1-channel DTS Digital Surround decoder system must be
connected to the digital audio output of the DVD recorder.
Note: Super Video CD compatibility: Pioneer's new DVD recorders support playback of the IEC’s Super Video Compact Disc (Super Video CD) standard (IEC 62107). Compared to the VideoCD standard, Super
Video CD offers superior resolution and picture quality, and allows two stereo soundtracks on the disc, although some functions, including time indication, don’t work.

Dialogue Enhancement.

Isn’t it annoying when you miss some key dialogue during loud action scenes such as an explosion or gunfire? With Pioneer’s Dialogue Enhancement technology, you
won’t miss even the quietest whisper! The reason why dialogue often goes ‘missing in action’ is because the dialogue sound is too soft or the background sound is too
loud. The centre speaker, which mainly reproduces dialogue and vocals, is usually placed above or below the TV; this positioning often lessens the impact of the
dialogue since the centre channel sound doesn’t reach the listener at an ideal height compared to the left/right speakers. This new Dialogue Enhancement mode uses
the left/right speakers in addition to the centre speaker for enhanced reproduction of the dialogue,
and also creates the impression that the centre channel sound is coming directly from the TV. (Left and
right speakers must be positioned at the same height as the TV, i.e. at ear level.) The function can also
be switched on at any time you feel that the sound from the centre channel isn’t clear.

game. It gives you the impression that you’re at the stadium, in the middle of the action. Select Dialogue Enhancement for

Creating a complete digital home cinema set-up is simpler than it may seem. Just relax, proceed according to the steps below and get ready to enjoy your very own home
cinema experience.
Step 1: Add a DVD Player

Start out with what you have: your TV/VCR combination, stereo hi-fi speakers, CD player and amplifier. Then add a DVD-Video player
to your TV/VCR combination. In addition to outstanding image quality and superb sound, DVD-Video allows you to view films in
various languages, with a selection of soundtracks and subtitles. You can also enjoy other features like viewing per chapter and, on

Step 2: Add an A/V Receiver or Amplifier + Centre/Rear Speakers

Add a Pioneer A/V surround amplifier or receiver as well as centre and rear speakers to experience supreme surround sound. Choose
carefully because the A/V amplifier or receiver is the central component in any home cinema system, connecting all the units and
amplifying sound from your TV, DVD, CD, or MiniDisc. A Pioneer A/V amplifier or receiver not only provides powerful sound, but can
accept a variety of image sources, like a video camera or game console. This is especially easy if your A/V unit has input terminals
on its front panel.
Step 3: Add an Active Subwoofer

With DVD-Audio players, users risked losing bass when they played DVD-Audio discs over
a typical home theatre system with five smaller satellite speakers and a separate
subwoofer. Pioneer’s DVD-Audio/Video/SACD players offer Bass Management Processing
to overcome bass difficulties. This processing technology includes high-pass filtering of
the main speakers, redirection of the bass from the main channels to the subwoofer output
— all of which are essential for proper low-frequency performance with any
satellite/subwoofer speaker system. Bass Management means the system can low-pass
any speaker to the sub and then send the remaining frequencies to the speaker. It is just
a matter of telling the DVD-Audio player how many speakers are in use, and what size they

SACD uses Direct Stream Digital (DSD) for recording and playback, featuring a frequency response of over
100 kHz and a dynamic range over 120 dB across the audible frequency range. DSD increases the resolution
of music by more closely following the original waveform of the music, which results in music reproduction that is remarkably pure and faithful to the
original.
In addition to exceptional sound quality through the DSD system, the SACD format can accommodate more than four times the information of the current CD format. With
this extra capacity, a SACD disc provides space for 2-channel stereo data, as well as an area for up to 6-track multi-channel data.

JPEG PhotoViewer*, available in Pioneer’s new DVD players, is a fun way to display your prized photos in their full magnificence on-screen — perfect
for parties or family gatherings. Simply load your CD, CD-R or CD-RW disc containing JPEG pictures into your DVD player to start the slide show. It’s easier than ever,
with improved on-screen graphics and new functions. You can rotate the angle and zoom in at 2 or
4 times. Finding the picture you want is a snap with the Disc Navigator or Photo Browser with
thumbnail images. Use the cursor buttons to select the picture you want, press Enter, and the slide
show will begin!
* JPEG file compatibility: this player is compatible with FUJICOLOR CD and KODAK Picture CD formats, as well as
CD-R/RW/ROMs containing JPEG files (up to 999 files). Baseline JPEG and EXIF files up to 8 megapixels are supported
(maximum vertical and horizontal resolution is 5120 pixels). The CD-R/RW/ROM containing the JPEG files must be
