Overview <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Construction</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Environment</strong><br />
Major <strong>Research</strong> Directions<br />
We aim to develop <strong>in</strong>novative solutions that meet the needs <strong>of</strong> different stakeholders <strong>in</strong> the field <strong>of</strong> construction<br />
<strong>and</strong> environment. The two major research directions <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Faculty</strong> are Susta<strong>in</strong>able Urban Development <strong>and</strong> Urban<br />
Hazards Mitigation.<br />
Susta<strong>in</strong>able Urban Development<br />
As a natural consequence <strong>of</strong> the rapid economic development on the Ch<strong>in</strong>ese ma<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong>, a massive urbanization<br />
process is underway. This process presents many challenges <strong>and</strong> opportunities for the <strong>Faculty</strong>. The <strong>Faculty</strong> has<br />
the necessary research expertise <strong>and</strong> is uniquely positioned to contribute to the solution <strong>of</strong> problems generated<br />
by this urbanization process. As such, susta<strong>in</strong>able urbanization has been identified as one <strong>of</strong> the focus areas <strong>of</strong> the<br />
University <strong>in</strong> its strategic plan for 2008-2012, <strong>and</strong> is a major research direction for the <strong>Faculty</strong>. Apart from a large<br />
number <strong>of</strong> external grants, the <strong>Faculty</strong> has directly funded 10 projects under the susta<strong>in</strong>able urbanization theme,<br />
<strong>and</strong> also manages a HK$25 million private <strong>in</strong>dustry donation over five years for six other projects which also fit the<br />
theme. The <strong>Faculty</strong> is currently proactively explor<strong>in</strong>g the possibility <strong>of</strong> formally establish<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>Research</strong> Institute for<br />
Susta<strong>in</strong>able Urban Development.<br />
Urban Hazards Mitigation<br />
In the area <strong>of</strong> urban hazards mitigation, the <strong>Faculty</strong>’s research is directed at mitigat<strong>in</strong>g the consequences <strong>of</strong> natural<br />
<strong>and</strong> man-made hazards (e.g. w<strong>in</strong>ds, earthquakes, fires <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>slides) on the safety <strong>of</strong> urban <strong>in</strong>frastructure. Most<br />
research <strong>in</strong> this area is undertaken with<strong>in</strong> the <strong>Faculty</strong>-based <strong>Research</strong> Centre for Urban Hazards Mitigation <strong>and</strong><br />
the <strong>Research</strong> Centre for Fire Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Build<strong>in</strong>g Services Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. PolyU has provided<br />
strong fund<strong>in</strong>g support to research <strong>in</strong> this area over the years, the latest be<strong>in</strong>g a grant <strong>of</strong> over HK$16 million<br />
for a project on “Intelligent High-Performance Structures” from its Niche Area Fund<strong>in</strong>g Scheme. The <strong>Faculty</strong><br />
has also been very successful <strong>in</strong> obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g grants from RGC <strong>and</strong> other external sources for research <strong>in</strong> this area.<br />
