The new 911 Carrera models
How do you combine
efficiency and
dynamism? With inner
strength for instance.
The new 911.
Inner strength in the new 911 comes about first
and foremost through state-of-the-art technology.
For example, with two completely new engines with
direct fuel injection (DFI), the new, optional Porsche
Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission, the intelligent
all-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM),
and the latest generation of Porsche Communication
Management (PCM).
1. The engines.
Porsche Communication Management (PCM)
Now with touch screen.
Direct fuel injection (DFI)
More power with less fuel consumption.
Whether it’s the coupé, cabriolet or Targa – all ten
new 911 models have a new generation of engines
with direct fuel injection (DFI). This makes sure
the fuel is directly injected and measured by the
millisecond. Technically, that means optimum
carburetion and combustion. For the driver, that means
a clear increase in performance and torque, and a
clear decrease in fuel consumption and emissions.
Depending on the model, CO 2
emissions can be
reduced by up to 15 %.
The 3.6 litre 6-cylinder horizontally-opposed engine
in the rear of the new 911 now provides 254 kW
(345 bhp) at 6,500 rpm and a maximum torque of
390 Nm at 4,400 rpm. The figures for the S versions
are even more convincing: the 3.8 litre engine
develops 283 kW (385 bhp) at 6,500 rpm and a
maximum torque of 420 Nm at 4,400 rpm.
Porsche Traction Management (PTM)
Power, intelligently distributed.
Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK)
dual clutch transmission
Two clutches, double the fun.

2. The intelligent all-wheel-drive.
The new all-wheel-drive 911 Carrera 4 models and
the new 911 Targa 4 models now also have Porsche
Traction Management (PTM). The electronically
steered multi-disc clutch determines the distribution
of the propulsion force to the front axle while taking
the driving conditions into account. The result:
the PTM in collaboration with Porsche Stability
Management (PSM) delivers the correct power
distribution in every driving situation, producing
excellent thrust and outstanding driving dynamics.
The standard mechanical rear differential lock also
assists with this. The advantage of PTM becomes
clearest on wet and snowy roads. The acceleration
potential here is straightforward and simply
breathtaking. The result: a high degree of safety and
outstanding performance, implemented with extreme
intelligence.
3. The Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK)
dual clutch transmission.
The new, optional Porsche Doppelkupplung transmission
(PDK – see also the Technology Special) has seven
gears at its disposal, divided over two transmissions
and two clutches, with manual and automatic modes.
*Manual transmission. **PDK. 1) The data were determined according to the Euro 5 (XXX/2008/EC) measuring procedure in the NEFZ (New European Driving Cycle) in standard equipment.
The final ordinance number was not yet available at the time of printing. The information does not refer to a single vehicle and is not a part of the offer; rather it serves solely for the purpose of
comparison between the various vehicle types. You can receive further information on the individual vehicles from your Porsche Centre/dealer. Preliminary values, no officially audited values were
available at the time of printing.
other transmission. It is thus possible to switch gears
within milliseconds and without interrupting the power
delivery. PDK therefore achieves clearly better
acceleration rates than a conventional manual
transmission. And that’s with comparable fuel
consumption. Through improved responsiveness,
and thus higher agility, PDK delivers higher driving
pleasure than the previous converter automatic.
Looking at just one example: the 911 Carrera S
with PDK accelerates in just 4.5 seconds from 0 to
100 km/h. In combination with the optional Sport
Chrono Package Plus, new functions can be selected
for the PDK: “Launch Control” for the best possible
acceleration when starting and “Race track shift
strategy” for gear-shifting behaviour similar to race
driving, delivering acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h
in just 4.3 seconds.
4. Porsche Communication
Management (PCM).
Cutting-edge technology is provided in communications
too, with the new, standard Porsche Communication
Management (PCM). This has a touch screen and an
optional universal audio interface for the first time,
for the connection and convenient operation of an
iPod ® for example. Upon request, a TV tuner is also
available for the reception of analogue and digital
television broadcasts. An intuitive operating philosophy
and an optional voice control system with whole-word
entry are all part of the package.
5. The design:
an expression of inner strength.
The new 911’s inner strength does not stem solely
from technological achievements. It also comes from
the consistent linking of design and functionality, as
well as from day-to-day usability and sportiness.
Each element fulfils a specific function and the new
911 also draws its inner strength from this. Gadgetry
is unthinkable and has no place here. The very low
drag coefficient of 0.29 of the new 911 Carrera
is the logical consequence. Standard for all 911
models are the Bi-Xenon headlights. Indicators and
the daylight driving and position lights executed in
LED technology are integrated harmoniously into the
separate front end lights using the exterior air intakes
– for a striking visual effect. The optional dynamic
cornering light has a rotatable module for the dipped
beam – visible technology enabling better vision. Also
newly designed is the rear. The new imposing LED tail
lights are drawn far into the wing and come to a point
at the outer edge. Unmistakable – especially at night.
With all the pioneering technology, one thing remains
undisputed: the new 911 is a 911, because it has
the inner strength to become better with each
generation. n
integrated into one housing and – as the name
suggests – two clutches.
The PDK provides an alternating non-positive
connection between the gearbox and the engine by
means of two separate drive shafts (drive shaft 1
is inside the hollowed out drive shaft 2). The power
transmission of the engine thus always runs over
one partial transmission and one clutch, while the
next gear is already engaged in the second partial
transmission. So, when switching gears, shifting no
longer takes place, rather as one clutch is opened,
the other is closed at the same time. Gear changes
therefore take place within milliseconds. Clutch 1
serves the first partial transmission with the oddnumbered
gears (1, 3, 5, 7) as well as the reverse
gear. Clutch 2 operates the second partial transmission
with the even-numbered gears (2, 4, 6).
The operating principle.
The crankshaft transfers the engine torque to the
damped flywheel. Then it is guided over the clutch
housing to the multi-disc clutch – to be more precise
to the respective outer slat members. By means of
oil pressure, clutch 1 closes and creates a power
transmission with drive shaft 1.
The PDK has already preselected the next gear.
The engine torque already bears against the other
outer slat member: at the signal for a gear shift, the
overlapping shifting takes place, i.e. while clutch 1
opens, clutch 2 closes. The power transmission with
drive shaft 2 is produced, which transfers the power
to the wheels.
The advantage of the PDK is extremely fast gear
changes without interruption of power delivery,
for improved acceleration ratios. The driving
experience is even more sporty and dynamic, and
agility is increased. The compact dimensions of the
transmission reduce the rotating masses. The result:
a more direct response from the engine and a lower
system weight. The very high level of efficiency and
the long ratio 7 th gear contribute to achieving lower
fuel consumption ratios and emissions – comparable
to that of a manual transmission. Together with
the new engines, it was possible to reduce fuel
consumption by up to 13%, depending on the
model, and CO 2
emissions by up to 15%. n
Hard – harder – Transsyberia.
Fourteen strenuous stages – the Transsyberia is one
of the hardest challenges in rally sports. Once again
this year, various Porsche customer teams were at
the start. Their most important equipment component:
the Cayenne S Transsyberia. An off-road vehicle, fast,
strong and always prepared to master the most
varying stretches and tests.
The Porsche Cayenne S Transsyberia was produced
in a small batch especially for long-distance rally
racing. Based on the experience of the Transsyberia
Rally last year, the off-road vehicle was optimised
for 2008. The modified parts were offered to the
participating customer teams from all over the world
as a conversion kit, so as to guarantee improved
off-road ability and optimise suspension tuning once
again.
The current version of the successful long-distance
vehicle has a reinforced and newly shaped underride
protection. Knobbly off-road tyres by BFGoodrich
The Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control system
(PDCC), which compensates for the lateral
inclination in curves through active anti-roll bars,
was especially adapted to the marathon conditions
of the Transsyberia Rally – for optimum side stability
even over difficult ground.
Designed for extreme loads.
The 4.8 litre V8 naturally-aspirated engine continues to
come from the series and puts out 385 hp with direct
fuel injection (DFI). The 6-speed automatic transmission
of the Cayenne S was combined with the shortened
axle transfer of the Cayenne GTS for quick spurts.
Optimal for planning routes, the Porsche navigation
module with Tripmaster determines the route between
two navigation points.
The Cayenne S Transsyberia has a massive safety roll
cage, bucket seats and a 6-point seat belt for the
protection of the driver and the co-pilot. Equipment for
the teams was also supplemented by winches, fire
extinguishers, sand boards, spare wheels, 2-man tents,
insulating mats, ratchet straps and tool boxes. n

The history of the Porsche double clutch transmission
Always one gear ahead: Porsche
Doppelkupplung (PDK) double clutch
transmission.
Porsche engineers have been following a clear
philosophy for 60 years: there is nothing that can’t
be made even better. They develop new ideas. They
scrutinize existing solutions and develop more new
ideas. Porsche started the search for a transmission
concept that had the advantages of a manual
transmission and avoided the disadvantages of an
automatic transmission over 40 years ago.
For fast gear changes in motor
sports.
Back in 1964, Porsche developed its initial double
clutch transmissions shiftable at load, including a
half-automatic 5-speed transmission for the type
908 race car. The development of an automatic
4-speed transmission began in 1968 using the
double clutch principle.
A special feature back then: the electro-hydraulic
control. A computer processed the parameters of
speed, engine rpm and the accelerator pedal’s
position and then calculated the shifting points.
Its use was also tested in the Porsche 911, but, at
the start of the 70s, high-performing electronics to
realize the sensitive clutch control necessary for
serial construction were lacking.
t View of the cockpit of the Porsche 962 C (1987) with PDK transmission
1981: the next development stage.
Various versions of double clutch transmissions
were again constructed back in 1979 within the
context of a study conducted on a future sports
car. Starting in 1981, the Porsche Doppelkupplung
(PDK) transmission emerged from this foundation, a
load-changeable, electronically controlled spur gear
system.
Developed for varying purposes, it was tested from
1981 to 1986 in parallel in the Group C race car
Porsche 956, as well as a half and fully automatic
version in Porsche series sports cars. The first trial
use of the direct manual transmission occurred in
1983 in the Group C race car Porsche 956. The
PDK made it possible for the driver to keep on the
gas when shifting gears, and also when cornering.
In 1986, Hans-Joachim Stuck won the Supercup in
the Porsche 962 C with PDK at Nürburgring and at
Hockenheimring. In the same year, he also achieved
a victory at the World Championship race in Monza.
Shifting faster. Everywhere.
Over 40 years of development work in dynamics
have brought Porsche further ahead. In motor sport,
where fast gear-shifting can decide between victory
and defeat and now in everyday usage too, where
acceleration without interrupting power delivery
provides a plus in driving fun: in the new
After arriving at the Dubai International Airport, we
first go via Cayenne Shuttle directly to the Hotel Bab
Al Shams. On three exciting days, under the direction
of the Porsche instructors, participants then experience
moments of exhilaration behind the steering wheel as
they drive through sand dunes, dried out river beds
and take on the most demanding desert excursions.
Many contrasting experiences are included – travelling
in the Porsche Cayenne and on the back of a camel,
and dining in an Arabian Bedouin tent and in one of
the most fashionable restaurants of the Arabian
metropolis.
Camp Portofino.
Portofino, east of Genoa. This picturesque coastal
city offers a unique mix of tradition with the flair of
high society. And plenty of exhilarating roads. The
individual daily stages of the 5-day Camp Portofino
seem as if they were created for a Porsche. They
lead through marvellous mountain roads and minute
villages. What sounds enchanting demands quite a bit
of driving skill: narrow country roads provide highly
demanding driving challenges. Bend follows bend.
The restaurants visited offer pleasures of a different
kind, for example, La Rotonda restaurant set by the
sea. Locations where, after an active day of driving,
you can easily slide into relaxation – reflecting on the
excitement of the day’s experiences. n
O’Young Proving the One to Beat in the
Porsche Carrera Cup Asia 2008.
Championship leader Darryl O’Young has further
fuelled his hopes of a second Porsche Carrera
Cup Asia (PCCA) title this season with his eighth
straight podium finish, including a win in Round 7
at the notoriously tricky Sentul International
Circuit, Indonesia in July.
But in the following race, Sugden, determined not
to let history repeat itself, made his move on lap
four to snatch the lead and with Australia’s Christian
Jones and O’Young caught up in their own battle, he
was able to pull out a gap at the front and take the
chequered flag.
Along with GruppeM Racing’s Tim Sugden, O’Young
showed some brilliant driving for Team Jebsen
grabbing the lead from the start of Round 7 and
never giving it up to finish more than three seconds
clear of Sugden who managed to squeeze past
Germany’s ace Christian Menzel of Team StarChase
on the final lap.
After being untouchable in Rounds 5 and 6 at the
Zhuhai International Circuit the month prior, Jones,
who set the fastest lap of the race, remained upbeat
despite not taking a win this time round. “Although
I’ve lost points to Darryl in this race, I still believe I’m
in a position to fight for the championship.”
Singapore’s Melvin Choo celebrated a double
victory in searing heat in the two previous rounds
in Zhuhai China, but had to settle for third in Round 7.
Class B pole-sitter Philip Ma of Hong Kong converted
his grid advantage to a victory ahead of Malaysia’s
Tunku Hammam, who later stormed back to take
the win in Round 8.
O’Young now sits comfortably at the top of the
Overall leader board, 11 points clear of Jones
with Sugden another point adrift. In Class B,
Choo remains at the top of the points standings,
Ringo Chong who inherited his passion for racing
from his late father Chong Boon Seng says
September 28, 2008 will be an emotional day, as
was the last Singapore Grand Prix back in 1973:
“My dad raced and finished 2nd in the Sports and
GT cars. I had tears in my eyes when my mom told
me it would be the last race. I didn’t want it to end
as I wanted my dad to be first! I have waited 35
years to race on home ground. My dream is to win
and carry on my family’s legacy.”
Melvin Choo, who is dominating the Porsche Carrera
Cup Asia Class B category this year adds that fans
are in for a real treat. “From what I have seen,
this track is going to become a legend. Thirty
years from now people are still going to remember
this race.”
Just like how Porsche is synonymous with well-built,
highly engineered sports cars designed for ‘real
drivers’ providing the ultimate performance on
the road, SC Global Developments’ philosophy
of delivering ‘The Ultimate Living’ has seen the
Singapore may be the new kid on the block in
modern Formula One and we have yet to see
homegrown talent race alongside the likes of
Hamilton, Alonso and Raikkonen, but the city is
certainly no stranger to world class motorsport.
Seven of the 19 entries lining up in their identical
motor racing event, the inaugural Singapore Grand
