The City <strong>of</strong> <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> Harbor Department (<strong>Port</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong>) invites your interest in the newlycreated<br />
position <strong>of</strong> <strong>Assistant</strong> <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Police</strong> <strong>Chief</strong>. The <strong>Port</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> is the premier gateway for<br />
international commerce in the United States and is the number one port by container volume and cargo<br />
value in the country. The <strong>Port</strong> encompasses 7,500 acres <strong>of</strong> land and water along 43 miles <strong>of</strong> waterfront,<br />
and features 25 passenger and cargo terminals, including automobile, breakbulk, container, dry and<br />
liquid bulk, and warehouse facilities that handle billions <strong>of</strong> dollars� worth <strong>of</strong> cargo each year.<br />
Reporting to the <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Police</strong> <strong>Chief</strong>, the <strong>Assistant</strong> <strong>Chief</strong> will assist the <strong>Chief</strong> in overseeing the day-to-day<br />
operations <strong>of</strong> the Department. The <strong>Assistant</strong> <strong>Chief</strong> will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and<br />
directing law enforcement, security functions and operations <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Police</strong>, and will<br />
serve as the acting <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Police</strong> <strong>Chief</strong> in his absence. The <strong>Assistant</strong> <strong>Chief</strong> will manage the functions <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Operations and Uniform Services Group consisting <strong>of</strong> the Waterborne and Field Services Division and the<br />
Tactical Planning Division.<br />
The ideal candidate is a seasoned, results-oriented leader with experience in a comparably sized agency<br />
who possesses outstanding organizational, administrative and time management skills. Successful<br />
candidates will be skilled in strategic and tactical planning with the proven ability to organize large,<br />
multi-agency projects. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker who can plan and execute police<br />
activities by combining strong leadership abilities with a collaborative/inclusive approach. Candidates<br />
who are detail-oriented and effective oral and written communicators will be favorably considered.<br />
Strong candidates will possess significant budget management experience in an agency <strong>of</strong> comparable<br />
size and scope.<br />
Minimum requirements include at least two years <strong>of</strong> full-time experience at the level <strong>of</strong> <strong>Police</strong> Captain<br />
or above, or at a level equivalent to police commanding <strong>of</strong>ficer. Experience providing law enforcement<br />
in a maritime environment is highly desirable as is graduation from POST Command College and/or FBI<br />
National Academy.
